Anne Hathaway’s favorite princess: ‘Kate Middleton, but she’s a duchess’

116194PCN_Anne17

Do you realize we’re less than a month away from the 2014 Met Gala? It’s true. This year’s Met Gala is on May 5th (Cinco de Mayo!). I was thinking about last year’s Met Gala, when Anne Hathaway showed up with her bleach-blonde hair. I wonder if Annie is coming this year and if she will do something else equally dramatic. Because these days, I’m longing for her to change up her hair. I’m tired of the short look on her. I’m not saying she should get extensions or anything, but I’d like to see her start growing that crap out.

These are pics of Annie yesterday in NYC, where she was photographed entering and exiting the ABC studio. She appeared on Good Morning America, just FYI. What are your thoughts on the coat? The coat is annoying me. It feels… Kardashian-esque. Like, I could see Kanye West talking Kim into wearing that coat. Hell, I could see Kanye wearing that coat. Annie = Yeezus? Also: I’m sorry for being so negative, but what’s up with her Terry Richardson-esque horn-rimmed glasses?!

As for Annie’s GMA interview, it was sort of cute. A 6-year-old named Sammy asked Annie to name her favorite princess:

ABC US News | ABC Business News

So, Annie says: “My favorite princess is Kate Middleton, but she’s a duchess. She’s a princess too, right? I’ll go with Kate Middleton… I think she’s lovely. She makes me very happy and that royal wedding just could not be beat.” Well, Prince William thinks Kate is a princess, but the UK press (not to mention the Palace) seems to disagree. I would be hard-pressed to name my favorite princess on the spot though, so snaps to Annie for thinking on the spot.

… Who would I name as my favorite princess? Not Letizia. Not Charlene. Probably Princess Victoria. Yes, Victoria is my favorite!

Nice to see my grandfather’s eyeglasses are getting some use

  2. don't kill me i'm french says:

I’m french,we killed our kings and queens happily!

    Nice coat and ugly glass,Anne!

  3. Kali says:

The correct answer is clearly Princess Estelle. Gotta say Sweden, in the grand scheme of things, your royal family are pretty awesome. (Am unimpressed with the royal shenanigans taking place in my country :s)

  4. Lucy2 says:

Coat and glasses bad, but otherwise she looks good. I am surprise she hasn’t grown out her hair by now though, I guess she likes it short.

    • LadyMTL says:

Coat and glasses hideous, lol. I love the purse, though, and I do like her hair short. She has beautiful features and can really pull off those styles.

    • Erinn says:

I feel like they wouldn’t be QUITE so hideous if worn separately. Still not good by any measure, but a little less bad. I wish I liked having my hair short – it would make getting ready so much quicker. I’m impressed that she’s stuck with it.

    • MollyB says:

I usually like to see short hair on women–I like that some are shaking up the notion that long, flowing hair is necessary for femininity–but it has never looked good on Anne. It’s just not a flattering style for her.

  5. L says:

Crown princess Victoria of Sweden followed shortly after my crown princess Mary of Denmark would be my picks. Stylish, always at events (Victoria has been working for months with a broken foot and crutches) plus they both feel like very hands on moms.

And even though she’s a queen now I’ve always had a soft spot for maxima. She seems fun.

    • Lizzie says:

I am Always kind of annoyed (not really) about the fact that Norwegian crown princess Mette-Marit is overlooked. She’s not pretty like many of the other princesses, but she was a single mom when she married into the royal family. She also had a past not “fitting” for a member of the royal family, it was argued (wild partying and such). She Turned the public view of her completely Around and We love her here in Norway. She’s outspoken about the causes she beileve in, and was just praised for her honesty after she spoke publicly about her late father being an alcoholic. Keep your pretty princesses, I’ll choose her every time!

      • m says:

I love Mette Marit! I think she’s gorgeous and i love all the work she does for AIDS awareness and youth empowerment. The three Scandinavians are my favorite, hands down. Princess Madeleine is pretty great too!

      • DameEdna says:

Mette-Marit not pretty? She was absolutely stunning on her wedding day…..that gown was utter perfection.

      • Lizzie says:

@ dameedna and M: I should have said “not conventionally pretty”. I find her beautiful, but it might be because she has proven time and time again to be such a beautiful person. And You’re right dameedna, she had one of the most beautiful wedding gowns i have ever seen. My point is: Mette Marit ftw!

      • L says:

Oh I like Mette Marit. I think she’s pretty and a great mom. And a smart woman as well.

But we are going for favorites here. Different strokes. And Victoria is my favorite for sure.

      • Francis says:

Marit of Norway is beautiful, prettier than plainjane Kate, IMO, and Crown Princess Mette Marit is older and her face is still more pleasing than Kate’s.
Kate has to be the most overrated plain jane on the royal stage. She’s only called attractive because of marrying William, IMO,she has chicken legs, bad skin, bad posture and is mostly all British press hype. They have to sell her as they do, but Kate is really not all that.

      • Tatjana says:

I googled Mette Marit, and I find her plain at best. I find KAte quite pretty. Different strokes for different folkes, I guess.

    • lower-case deb says:

speaking of Crown Princess Victoria, wasn’t Anne’s character’s dress in the Princess film (Princess Diary?) based on Victoria’s gala dresses? i think it’s the cornflower blue one with a dramatic collar. i find this somewhat interesting.

      • m says:

Yes it was. In fact, Anne based her character on Victoria while Mias wedding gown was based on Princess Claire of Belgium.

  6. Karen says:

What’s she promoting anyways, she seems to be doing press rounds?

  7. Stef Leppard says:

I think the six-year-old meant Disbey princess.

    • Falula says:

Yup. She’s probably obsessed with Frozen right now and was expecting either Elsa or Ana as an answer.

    • Samantha25 says:

Yes. A six year old wouldn’t be thinking about real royalty.

    • Tatjana says:

Are Mulan and Merida Disney princesses?

      • Chinoiserie says:

They are in the princess line which annoys me since Mulan is not a princess and Merida is Pixar. But I am a bit too serious about Disney lol.

    • Annaloo. says:

Oh my god, you are probably right! 🙂

      I can’t believe I don’t have a favorite Disney Princess..

    • Rachel says:

She was. She prefaced her question saying Anne was her favorite movie princess and wanted to know who Anne’s favorite princess is. I thought it was kind of funny because we all know she’s been trying to distance herself from the princess schtick for a very long time. And then she completely misinterpreted the question. I couldn’t tell if it was purposeful misinterpretation or not.

  8. blue marie says:

That coat looks like a snuggie, and everyone knows snuggie’s shouldn’t be worn outside.

  9. Tatjana says:

CP Mary seems great. Letizia too. Or Claire who has a PhD. And what is the name of the one who was a soldier?
But CP Mary is probably my favourite.

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She used to be so cute.

  11. Cloud&feather says:

I took it to mean the girl wanted to know what her favorite Disney princess was? The Anna costume and brandishing of an Anna doll and all…

    • original kay says:

yeah.. the kid is 6. Disney is most likely what was meant or… maybe the Princess she played?

      (facepalm)

  12. lower-case deb says:

now that she is Princess again… Princess Beatrix ftw!
the way she pulls all her family together through these tough couple of years…

as for former Princess: Queen Mathilde!

  13. Loopy says:

I can’t even begin to try to understand how they do these Royal titles, so can Duchess eventually become a Queen or even if married to a King will get another title?!

  14. Savanna says:

Not to spoil the fun we’re all having but wouldn’t a six year old mean a Disney princess?

    • T.C. says:

      +1

Ms AnnE was not paying attention. The little girl was obviously asking about cartoon princesses.

      • lunchcoma says:

I think she was paying attention and that she didn’t want to name a Disney princess.

  15. Lee says:

She is careening into Katherine Heigl territory, fashion-wise. Even the hair in that last photo is rather “mature” looking.

  16. Christina says:

Gotta say, I like the hair as it suits her facila frame and don’t mind the coat (not so much on the glasses). It’s ok that she didn’t reference a Disney princess as even at the age of 6, I had seen the Princess Diana wedding and knew royalty was real. Random note, yes, Kate’s a Duchess, but I gotta go with Anne on this one as well – she’s just lovely.

  17. Ravensdaughter says:

Where did she get those glasses? Early 1980’s? I won’t even start about the coat…pregnant maybe?
Or maybe she’s just going through a style crisis….

  18. LaurieH says:

I remember that coat from 1984. Of course, back then it was posing as a southwestern throw on the back of my cheap Rooms To Go couch, but whatever. The glasses are hideous and yeah, they look like they came from Pearle Vision’s Terry Richardson eyewear collection. As to her hair, I am over it. She’s had more than enough time to grow it out, so either she’s trying to position herself as the 21st century’s doe-eyed incarnation of Audrey Hepburn or she just wanta to constantly remind us she played Fantine.

  19. Amy Tennant says:

I’m sure the poor kid meant Disney princess, but Anne’s answer is legit. I’m not sure who my favorite princess is (I like the Yorkies), but my favorite Duchess is definitely Alba.

  20. Annaloo. says:

I would have said QUEEN Jetsun Pema, in a second. She is by far one of the world’s most beautiful royals, if not the most gorgeous, and she’s the queen of the “Happiest country in the world”, Bhutan. She is stunning and with such a sweet face (Yes, I am a fan!). There’s so much focus on Western royal familiess, but it definitely serves glam goo-goo eyes to look at some of the Eastern ones. She’s definitely got it over Duchess Kate for looks.

    • Tatjana says:

What has she going for gher except her looks? I don’t know anything about her.
Spealing of non-western princesses. Laala Salma seems cool too.

      • Annaloo. says:

She was commoner that the Prince married, which was a charming story in itself, but she is involved with environmental causes. I wish her profile was higher to give more visibility to them.

Laala Salma is gorgeous, stunning…that hair is goddess hair. I am glad you brought her up. In our global society, it definitely enriches us to bring the Eastern queens, empresses, princesses into the conversation too!

    • Shin says:

      +1
      She is better public speaker
She is not waity . Fact is the king was waiting for her. They married after she completed her education.
She is graceful . The more I read about her, the more I like her.

  21. Murphy says:

    Princess Estelle FTW!!

  22. Erandyn says:

    Anne is the new Goop.

  23. Francis says:

Both Anne Hath and Kate are annoying. Imo

  24. Anna says:

    LETIZIA!!! Or maxima!!!

  25. raindrop says:

I’d go with Princess Beatrice or Eugenie. Both work harder and are far more interesting than Kate.

  26. Dimebox says:

Anne was on Jimmy Fallon last night and was great. She looked fabulous, sang, and I was shocked how great her voice sounded because I was not a fan of her singing in Le Mis.

  27. Bella says:

Although she is now Queen Consort of Neatherlands, (but before was a princess )I would pick Máxima, she has so much charisma and personality the dutch people love her, and I love that she is form Argentina.

  28. lunchcoma says:

Wouldn’t be my choice, but I appreciate that Anne tried to avoid the Disney princess trap. Frozen was a nice movie, but lots of the others have terrible messages, and I generally think that princess culture has become too pervasive (it’s bad enough when it’s just aimed at little girls, but I lost my patience when women my own age were expected to care about princesses).

  29. Lux says:

Can we please ship her off the a deserted island with no escape raft?

  30. Duchess of Corolla says:

Is it me, or is she channeling creepy Uncle Terry with those glasses? 🙁

  31. Violet says:

I don’t really find anything special in many of the future queens of Europe, save Mette-Marie, as they all are seem to enjoy the perks and not the job. So my favorite princess is also Victoria of Sweden (I also like the Infanta Elena of Spain, Caroline of Monaco, Lalla Salma of Morocco and Sophie of Liechtenstein. I also have special affection towards Stephanie of Luxembourg). She has work ethic, charisma, educated and takes her job seriously.

  32. Eva says:

Darn why doesn’t she grow some hair already? Her face is not pretty enough to carry off the short hair. And what’s up with the Terry Richardson style glasses in the top photo?

  33. Eileen says:

She looks like Mrs.Potato head with those ridiculous glasses on.

  34. Malen says:

    Princess Leia for the win!

  35. DIANE says:

I think she’s really creepy with real Goop potential. And by the way, a lot of Brits think Kate and Wills are lazy layabouts prone to taking superexpensive vacations every couple of weeks.
