Paris Hilton blamed for epidemic of abandoned Chihuahuas

parispuppyheader

I can easily blame Paris Hilton for three or four dozen major problems. Everything from bad extensions to global warming – if I try hard enough, I can find some way to link it all back to Paris. But it turns out there is something Paris is legitimately responsible for – the wave of neglect of Chihuahuas. According to California animal rescue workers, Paris popularized the dogs as trendy accessories. And vapid, stupid girls tried to copy her – and eventually dumped the dogs when they got sick of them.

Paris Hilton has been blamed for an epidemic of abandoned Chihuahuas in California animal shelters, because she’s made toting around the pups in tiny handbags a major trend.

The hotel heiress was investigated last year after admitting she owned 17 dogs, allegedly breaking U.S. laws that ban non-breeders from having more than three per address.

Animal shelter bosses in Santa Barbara have now prohibited anyone under age 21 from adopting a miniature pup, after seeing a growing trend of young women dumping their full-grown dogs when they’re sick of caring for them.

And activists are blaming Hilton’s menagerie of tiny animals for the problem.

Chihuahua Club of America head Lynnie Bunten tells the National Enquirer, “Chihuahuas are not a toy or a fashion accessory. But because some people think they are — then realize they’re wrong — there’s a growing problem of abandoned Chihuahuas.”

[From the San Francisco Gate]

Paris is really horrible when it comes to animals. She collects them like they’re accessories instead of living creatures that require food, shelter, care, and attention. She’s so empty and useless, of course she doesn’t realize there’s an important element of responsibility involved. I don’t really care for Chihuahuas – or any purse dogs. But I’m damn sure her infamous little Tinkerbell has a lot more going on upstairs than Paris does on her best day.

People need to think carefully before they buy pets. Cute little animals grow up into something bigger and slightly less adorable. If you just like them when they’re tiny and new, it’s a bad decision. Every Easter there’s always a rash of baby chicks and bunnies that flood animal shelters after people impulsively decide to buy the cute little fuzzballs, forgetting that they require long-term care.

I used to live near Microsoft’s Redmond campus, and in the early nineties they gave their employees baby bunnies as Easter presents. A lot of people dropped them off on a grassy hill next to a nearby Azteca restaurant. Those critters multiplied at astronomical rates – even for rabbits. For years you could see them from the highway when you drove by. It’s a great example of why you need to think long and hard about buying pets, and always make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.

Here’s Paris trying on a few outfits (and a dog?) while shopping at Harmony Lane with a West Highland Terrier sharing her changing room today in Los Angeles. Header is an older picture of Paris trying to nom what I think is a sleeping chihuahua. Images thanks to WENN.

I wouldn’t just blame her for Chihuahuas I’d blame her for all those small yappy dogs I see girls carrying around. When I worked at Victiria’s Secret some lady came in with a dog in a STROLLER.

  2. Jeane says:

How is Paris responsible for this? Much as I hate her, it’s not her fault these idiots buy a dog because of a vapid famewhore.

  3. Mairead says:

A stroller…. Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

That Chihuahua film recently probably didn’t help much either.

But on the Microsoft story… what utter moron of the highest order came up with, what I can only describe as the worst idea since the introduction of a breeding pair of American grey squirrels to Britain and Ireland as a wedding present (they have decimated the population of the native red squirrel)

That is thick on so many different levels I can barely breathe! Was that published in a newspaper I can get online so I can lambaste the idiot?

  4. jess says:

ok! that is a westie that she is holding in the lower pictures. I own one. They require work, love and attention. For some reason I sparked anger just seeing her hold one. The idea of anyone neglecting or abandoning a dog REALLY upsets me. I’m watching Oprah now and just crying and crying.

  5. santacruz says:

Dogs are for Life!!! Airheads take note!

  6. Tia says:

Dogs are so sweet and so precious. It really pisses me off people don’t have enough brains to know they are loving creatures that love you so much and need care. How could someone give away their angel?? UNREAL and heartless..

  7. WonderUrs says:

The wild thing is that I’ve probably owned my fish for longer than she’s had many of her dogs.

  8. Annie says:

OMG! That’s where I saw a dog in a stroller too! At vicky’s…random.

Anywho, I mean, I have a dog and I adoreadoreadore my dog (Welsh Corgi! 35lbs. And most definitely not a purse dog) and I think it’s ridiculous that you’re absolutely right. She HAS turned them into accessories. Wtf?

He’s my furkid!! Not a bracelet. I don’t think I’d ever put him in a stroller but I am definitely guilty of going to Corgi meetups. Funniest thing ever? 50 corgis running around bossing the big dogs.

And…didn’t they find dead dogs in her closet? She’s ridiculous. Someone should euthanize her. 🙂

  9. Leandra says:

Throw away society and that includes the pets who depend on us completely for their survival. And the poor little chihuahuas are so vulnerable.

  10. Jaclyn says:

That white dog she is posing with is a West Highland White Terrier or Westie. That kills me to see her posing with one because I have one myself! And he is my baby!!!!!

  11. Jaclyn says:

Jess, just read your comment and I totally agree. She better not own that westie, I really hope that is just a photo op with someone else’s westie. Westies require A LOT of care and attention that Paris just isn’t capable of giving.

  12. Annie says:

Umm. To clarify, ALL dogs require a lot of love and attention.

    Not just Westies.

  13. Dorothy says:

Maybe she could turn this onto a positive thing and do something like a PSA. All dogs and cats in animals shelters need homes and if she really wanted to do the right things she should speak out.

  14. raven says:

Laws vary according to states and municipalities on the number of dogs per address. It would help if the source would get the story straight.

As far as multiples, each dog needs socialization and training to become a good adult pet. Not only does Paris not seem to understand this, she has very little awareness of the consequences of most of her activities. That was how she ended up in jail.

  15. Jaclyn says:

Annie, I know all dogs require love and attention. The reason I said westies do, is because of the pictures of her with the westie. That was my response to those pictures and my hope that that westie is truly not hers.

  16. CB Rawks says:

Paris is definitely to blame for her OWN behaviour with dogs,
but those other skanks are fully responsible for THEIR behaviour.
If they get to shift blame for that, they should also have to commit themselves somewhere for constant confinement and supervision. Like a boarding kennel.

  17. Codzilla says:

Someone please lock this bitch in a dungeon before one of us goes crazy and tries to take her out.

  18. Rio says:

I’m happy that my breed (mini schnauzer) hasn’t been made “popular” yet– you do see some people with them, but generally they’re just so territorial that they don’t make good photo-op dogs.

  19. Orangejulius says:

I’ve seen those bunnies on the Redmond campus; they were all over the place!

This saddens me beyond belief. I’m a foster mom and you just hope and pray that your little charges go to homes where they’ll be taken good care of – not to people who discard them like this. I really would like to bitch slap her and all the other bimbos who think animals are toys.

  20. Annie says:

    Good for you for fostering!!!!!

I’ve always wanted to, but I think I don’t have what it takes. I think I’d end up keeping them, no matter the strain it may cause me. LOL

  21. vdantev says:

Is she kissing the dog or biting the back of its neck ?

  22. Goddess711 says:

Which site was it on that I read when she gets tired of them she puts them in a closet and forgets about ’em…the cleaning help find the carcasses regularly.
I believe it – this chick is pretty much empty inside.

  23. Joolzz says:

I wish i could take my two ridgebacks in a stroller LOL one is 60 lbs and the other 88lbs. It drives me nuts when people take their little dogs into the mall, cause we would all know what would happen if we did that with our bigger dogs…….

my heart goes out for all of those homeless doggies and kitties

  24. Ms. B says:

As an owner of a 3 lb. Chihuahua, I know personally the extra care and attention they require, but it’s all worth it! I can’t imagine ever giving up my “little girl”.

I do however, happen to be one of those “people” who carry my dog in my purse to the mall. The reason being that my husband and I travel very frequently, and my dog travels w/ us WHEREVER we go. Now before anyone criticizes me, I do allow her to be a regular dog. She has climbed the Austrian Alps, hiked the Arizona mountains, and roamed Florida’s beaches. That’s why some responsible pet owners prefer “purse puppies”, because this sort of travel would not be possible w/ a big dog.

  25. Monalicious says:

I am a “Mommy” to 6 Chihuahuas and 2 Poodles. And I have to jump through hoops to keep and care for them all. My house gets inspected by my local Animal Control worker once a year, and it has to be spotless. I have to store their food in plastic bins, have 3 dog houses and a secure fenced in yard. As well as show proof that all shots are current and that they ALL have been “fixed”. And I do this willingly.

I love my Chihuahuas and Poodles. But, I am an older woman (35) who is devoted to these dogs, who I have had for many years. My oldest Poodle is 14, and my oldest Chihuahua is 11. And yes, I have had them all that time!!!

Paris and her ever changing collection of puppies drives me crazy. The only “pet” she needs is a Chia Pet from the drugstore!!!!

  26. geronimo says:

Just when I thought it’s not possible to loathe her any more than I already do. Wish those little dogs would turn on her and tear her limb from limb in a big blood-spattered, glittery pink massacre.

  27. Aspen says:

I love my dog. She is second only to my human family. That said, she is a beagle. Beagles are so high-maintenance, and when I think of all the poor lovelies in shelters all over the place because Uno won Westminster in 2008, it makes me shiver (and sometimes cry).

I’m not a fan of smaller dogs that yip, personally, but knowing how much I love my dog…and I LOVE my dog…I get so angry when I see pictures of this (pardon the pun)bitch out and about with a canine. She shouldn’t be allowed. I got the biggest grin on my face the day I saw an article about her being turned down by a pet shop when she went to buy another dog one day.

    Was that on this site?

  28. mojoman says:

    @Geronimo,”glittery pink massacre”..
LOL, I am imagining sparkly pink star dust shower with the massacre (gawd, I am sick!)

  29. orion70 says:

I own a 13-16 pound dog depending on the season………and I do not take her in bags anywhere….

really….do you really think that your dog WANTS / NEEDS to be: in the mall; in a restaurant; at the gym; in your purse; going on vacation ?

anyone doing any of these things, or similar, is not doing them FOR THE DOG….but for yourselves.

  30. adrseq says:

It is not her fault other people get rid of their dogs. They were informed adults, knowing the responsibility animals required, and they can be held responsible themselves. Paris is not responsible for other’s actions. She really seems to love amimals, and she can afford to have them, and even if she has someone helping her take care of them, at least they have a good home.

  31. Frenchie says:

Dam, Paris is using Chihuahuas as handkechieves

  32. Cindie says:

To:”adrseq” That is the dumbest comment on here. You sound as cruel as Paris, and should NEVER own a pet. Animals aren’t just something you get rid of when you’re tired of them. They depend on you for their suvival. It’s called being A RESPONSIBLE PET PARENT!!!!!
