Miley Cyrus: Instagram & Facebook ‘hurt your brain’ more than pot

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is everywhere all over again. I couldn’t figure out why she’s giving so many interviews lately, but she’s promoting her Australian tour dates. Yesterday, I covered several Miley interviews including the Sunday Morning discussion where she unironically compared herself to Elvis. The rest of the interview has surfaced, and Miley’s talking about weed again. This is one of her favorite subjects. Miley says weed is much better for your mind than social media.

Miley has a new tattoo that reads “love your brain,” and she says this is a reminder to curb her internet use. Huh. Miley posts to Instagram 5-6 times per day. She tweets all the time, and she does Facebook too. That’s a lot of social media for someone who claims to dislike it. She spams my Instagram feed more than any other celebrity (including James Franco). Let’s listen to Miley’s wisdom anyway:

Social media is worse than weed: “You know what hurts your brain? Instagram. You know what hurts your brain? Reading comments on Facebook. You know what hurts your brain? Reading US Weekly.”

She mixes Instagram & weed: “I put some picture of me smoking weed … on my Instagram because I was brought up in the way that we never thought marijuana was bad.”

More on twerking Elvis: “He was like s-x. He was a symbol of s-x but no one would have ever called Elvis a sh-t because he wasn’t a girl. It’s that double standard and I think I’m doing something for the double standard.”

She’s a role model, sort of: “I don’t put myself up on a pedestal and say ‘look at me I’m an example.’ The only thing I’m an example of is freedom, especially in this time where the energy of the world is shifting from male energy to female energy.”

This is the Miley era: “I just want to make the music that I love. I’ve already served my time of doing what people want me to do and doing what a company wants me to do now forget it’s about what I want to do to be happy.”

She’s very grounded: “I tell people, you know, going to the club doesn’t make me a bad person, going to church doesn’t make you a good one. Everything that I do is kind of for me and for my own happiness and I think that’s why I’m like so happy.”

Miley does have a point when it comes to double standards for performing artists. Elvis was controversial in his time, and so is Miley, but she doesn’t get Elvis the way Eminem did many years ago. That’s a conversation for another day.

I do find humor in Miley dissing social media when she’s an addict like so many other people. That’s fine. It’s what people do nowadays, but not everyone is popping a squat and showing off their bongs on Instagram. Miley is thirsty for attention and doesn’t realize it.

Here’s a video clip of Miley’s appearance on Sunday Night.

i find her more harmful than weed for the brain so… There is that…

  2. Annabelle says:

No comments on her comment but I have to say that i do not like social media either.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t either, but she is one of the most obnoxious abusers of social media, so she should be talking to herself.

  3. Honeybea says:

I wonder which she would miss most if they were taken away..the weed or the social media?

    • Chibichichai says:

Social media. Without weed she would still have salvia (which probably was weed IMO) or her beloved Molly because, you know, they’re happy drugs.

  4. aims says:

Yeah, I think social media can be very addicting. It seems strange to compare pot and Twitter together, but I guess both can be used as an escape. If I had to choose between the two it would be pot. Twitter seems way more self destructive. Twitter can get your behind in trouble, while pot just makes you chill and hungry. It seems like comparing apples and oranges.

  5. epiphany says:

We wouldn’t know who she was without social media – that goes for most of her contemporaries as well.

  6. bns says:

I agree with her and I don’t even smoke weed.

    • Fran says:

Same here. There are all kinds of studies showing how people feel much more insecure after reading facebook comments for 30 min or so. I think weed might be dangerous for teenagers because it affects the develeopment of the brain, but as an adult… idk.

  7. Birdix says:

Is she saying Elvis the pelvis wasn’t controversial? Or that people are calling her different names for being controversial in a similar way?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think she’s saying that Elvis wasn’t called names for being sexy, but she is. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Elvis was vilified and banned and called all sorts of names for his gyrating, which by the way, was not twerking, Miley you idiot. In general, I’d say she is probably correct that men are not called names for being “sexy” on stage the way women are, but Elvis is a bad example.

  8. Macey says:

Hate to say but I agree with her on a lot of this, especially this line..

“I tell people, you know, going to the club doesn’t make me a bad person, going to church doesn’t make you a good one.”

  9. aquarius64 says:

Social media does more damage to the brain…

Miley’s constant use of it is proof.

  10. Artemis says:

Well then, that’s a double whammy for her: internet addiction and pot use.

Okay Miley, maybe you were raised that way but pre-2013 your team did everything in their power to squash the pot rumours. So either she wasn’t in control over her image/career or she was scared of losing her fanbase.

Elvis’ hip-shaking was very controversial. They called him names (not like women get called names but ‘vulgar’ and ‘animalistic’ were used regardless), there was police involved and on one performance they taped him above the hips 🙂 They tried to stop him from doing it etc. The double standard is that it’s part of his iconic status whereas for women it stays vulgar.

    I like her other statements.

  11. Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

I tell people, you know, posting here doesn’t make me a dweeb and weed and Elvis shoutouts don’t make you relevant.

  12. Mischa Jane says:

Miley cracks me up, honestly. Sometimes I find her funny. This is one of them.

  13. grabbyhands says:

You know what is bad for your brain? Instagram! I post pictures of me smoking pot on Instagram…

Miley, just follow your own advice and stop saying words. If social media is so much more harmful than weed (and we GET IT-you like getting high), then for the love of humanity, please get off Instagram, quit doing interviews and just go somewhere and make the music you keep saying is so important to you. No one really thinks you’re a trailblazer. The only thing you’re a role model for is thirsty, strident screeches for attention.

  14. Denise says:

FIgures the one time I see where she’s coming from she manages to contradict herself. Too much weed maybe! (Not against weed at all, but there’s a limit)

  15. Anthea says:

facebook isn’t necessarily negative for everyone. Maybe if you’re a ‘controversial’ pop star who is always pulling stunts for attention you might read negative stuff on there about yourself but some of us just use it to chat with friends and family who live a long way away. I kept in touch with my siblings through facebook when I moved abroad. It’s free, and easy for us all.

  16. Chris says:

When Grace Slick roared ‘Feed your head!’ on ‘White Rabbit’, she was admittedly talking about mind-bending mushrooms and so on….but let’s all tell Miley that this great rock icon she might look up was talking about, you know, reading and learning, like, stuff? Get a few clues that way!

  17. Aussiegal says:

Do her veneers not fit in her mouth properly? Like they’re kind of too big?

  18. Ginger says:

She’s an idiot. A close family member smoked pot until recently. She ended up in the hospital for a week because it was spiked with spice which caused a psychotic break. Miley needs to learn the facts about modern marijuana distribution. I look forward to the day when it’s legally grown safely, regulated and taxed for those who indulge. I think we could wipe out our US debt if we did so honestly. People love to smoke it but in most places it’s still illegal and she’s bragging about criminal activity on social media. Not very bright!

  19. Ryan says:

I totally agree with her on social media being bad for your mind, and I believe that’s what she really thinks. It’s possible for addicts to know that their vice is bad for them. I’m an aspiring dietitian who is addicted to fast food. That’s similar, I think.
