Jennifer Lawrence is no longer bodyshamed by directors as a ‘main movie star’

Jennifer Lawrence

These photos of Jennifer Lawrence departing from San Diego Comic-Con are killing me. Not only does her body look fantastic (there’s no denying it), but her style has improved so much lately. It’s hard to notice the cute dresses when she’s fooling around and drawing on her face, but JLaw must have found a new stylist. I’m usually not one for hair extensions either, but Jennifer’s weave looks really natural. This looks like her hair from a few years ago, before she dyed and bleached it several times for movies.

On Friday, I talked about how JLaw gushed about eating all the food at Comic-Con. Some more quotes from the weekend have since come out. JLaw hasn’t talked about body image in quite some time, but she broached the subject again:

Today, with Lawrence raking in $20 million paychecks, she says Hollywood can’t and doesn’t bother to body shame her anymore.

This revelation came at the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 press conference at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday, when the 24-year-old was asked if she thought there would be better roles for women in the future.

“I would hope so,” she said, pausing to think about the rest of her answer. “That’s risky, Jennifer,” she mumbled to herself, before she issued a disclaimer of sorts. “This could blow people’s hair back in a good way, or it could be my last time at Comic-Con.”

Thankfully, Lawrence took the risk to explain why she no longer gets notes from producers telling her she needs to drop a couple pounds.

“I had a conversation with somebody about the struggles with weight in the industry – I know that’s something I talk nonstop about,” Lawrence said. “And they were saying, ‘All of the main movie stars aren’t very underweight.’ I said, ‘Yeah, because once you get to a certain place [in your career], people will hire you. They just want you to be in the movie, so they don’t care.’ It’s more about the struggle for the actors and actresses who haven’t made it to a certain place.”

[From Huffington Post]

Some people could interpret Jennifer’s words as bragging, but she’s not wrong about being a major movie star. She nabbed a $20 million salary and will receive top billing over Chris Pratt for Passengers. She also just signed onto The Rosie Project. With the upcoming Mockingjay 2, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Oscar-baity Joy on the way, directors aren’t about to mess with her. JLaw knows this, and she’s simply pointing out how directors will always push around less established actresses.

  1. GlimmerBunny says:

Her body is amazing! I love how healthy and womanly she looks, and she’s a great style inspiration to tall and thin but curvy women (like me).

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA, I love the fact that she’s not emaciated, and that she’s sort of saying that the “bosses” basically can’t nitpick about her size any more because she’s too famous for that sh*t, lol. Go on and eat all the food, Jennifer! 😛

    • Ronda says:

why is the word “womanly” never used for petite women? are they not womanly?

      • GlimmerBunny says:

Yes, they can be. Salma Hayek is petite and womanly, so is Kim Kardashian IMO. They are both barely over 5″.

      • Neah23 says:

If she was thinner would she still be “womanly”?

      • Ronda says:

And women without curves? Is Natalie Portman not womanly? Emma Stone? Emma Watson?

      • Naddie says:

I’m with you on that one. Women without curves are womanly, enough with this exclusive label. I’m pretty curvy and already annoyed, imagine a very thin woman.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Depends on your definition. I wouldn’t really call Natalie Portman womanly which has has less to do with her figure than with the vibe I get from her. I’d describe her as more girlish. But I’m guessing you just want to get rid of the word “womanly” altogether? Because certain women aren’t described like that and could therefore feel insulted, discriminated against etc.? We could just get rid of “manly”, “cute”, and every other adjective that doesn’t describes everybody but I’m guessing that that’s not happening. I know why you take issue with this particular word but the OP said something nice. Sometimes we could leave it at that.

      • ShinyGrenade says:

Hummm, I think she mean “petite” as in Audrey Hepburn…. Not someone short, just with a small frame.

And BTW, KK is not “petite”, she is a surgery-Barbie-gone-wrong.

It’s silly to say you need “curves” to look womanly. You can have small boobs and a small frame and be amazingly womanly.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Btw, I find Cate Blanchett rather womanly. Again, nothing to do with her figure.

      • Kitten says:

“I know why you take issue with this particular word but the OP said something nice. Sometimes we could leave it at that.”

Again, I know why the adjective is annoying to people but it was used so innocently here. I think the outrage is a bit displaced.

      • qwerty says:

I’d say Natalie and the Emmas are all rather girly. Just a different kind of charm.

      • itzblissy says:

I feel like you are misunderstanding what she said. She said she looks womanly, which has nothing to do with her weight or her height. She just means she looks like a woman. I’m 27 and 90% of the time when i look in the mirror, i look girly. Because my combine features screams, i’m 15!, but sometimes when i dress up, curl my hair, wear makeup i manage to pull of womanly as in I do not look like a young teen but a 25+ woman.

    • Nicole says:

Yea she looks great! And at the end she actually said she would like to hear the answer to this question from someone NOT in her position. Which to me isn’t bragging she’s being frank and aware of her situation.

  2. Astrid says:

    She is smoking hot!

    • Erica says:

So I’d only be considered “womanly” if I had large breasts? I’m so sick of hearing this description of womanliness–as if I’m inadequate in my gender! Last I checked, women come in all shapes and sizes.

      • lemon says:

Yes, you are womanly if you have large breasts but only if you cover then up. If you wear a plunging neckline and show lots of cleavage, then you you are clearly a whore.

Seriously, I saw this on a style blog about Viola Davis, who was chided that her revealing dress put her into “stripper territory” and that she should leave those types of dresses to women with less endowment.

No matter what your body type is, some one will sh*t on it! (Fwiw all women are womanly!)

  3. Kopi says:

That blue dress looks like something a cloistered Midwesterner would wear on their first trip to Vegas.

Also, why don’t we focus on not letting someone in their early-twenties take roles made for women in their mid-thirties? Especially if said young actress is criminally overrated?

    • JWQ says:

      + 1

    • Chinoiserie says:

It is the fault of casting directors, directors and producers if she is not cast according to her age. She should not be demanded to turn down great roles. Besides it is not like she is the only one having roles like this. And critics, award circles and audiences like her so while there are some who think she is overrated many truly think she is a great actress.

    • Juana says:

Let’s not focus on Lawrence being allegedly ‘criminally overrated’ as an actress – because that would be a waste of time, as she is obviously a major talent. And the ‘stealing older actresses’ claim is fairly tired as well – her roles in American Hustle and Joy were specifically written for her by David O Russell. Let’s focus instead on the good point she’s making about the vulnerability of less famous actresses to body pressures.

      • Neah23 says:

How can her role in American Hustle be written for her? When the movie was bast on a book who character she played is in her 30’s.

      • Frances says:

        @Neah
Because Russell changed the story. At the beginning of the movie it written “Ispired from true event”. Isn’t a biopic and yes he rewrote the role for Lawrence. And American Hustle wasn’t based on a book

      • Juana says:

Russell made the ‘mistress’ character played by Amy Adams older, and the ‘wife’ character played by Lawrence younger, to fit the actresses he wanted to cast.

      • korra says:

Russell changed the story to fit her in the movie. Because he falls in love with his actors often to the detriment of the story, character, and overall development of the movie. It was not the first nor would it be the last time he’s done this with her. His obsession with her is creepy. Sorry it just is given his background and history. She knowingly works with him in spite of it, for a number of reasons including but not limited to the small number of choices she has as a woman within Hollywood. But she’s striking will the iron is hot. And yes. I do think her talent is highly exaggerated.

I wish she was more interesting, articulate, and intelligent in how she talked about these issues she’s so passionate about and her movies though. She has yet to intrigue me with her thoughts about her characters and her films. Which is a shame. Hopefully she’s able to grow in that regard. I’m excited for The Rosie Project because it’s a character close in age and sounds like a good fit for her, assuming she can pull a capable Australian accent. Ugh I hate saying this but I think Holt could play the male lead in this. Or Eddie. Or an Australian actor. Hugh Jackman could be her biological father. Toni Collette could be his wife.

    • Liz says:

      criminally overrated? Slightly hyperbolic surely.

    • Gecko247 says:

Ok, maybe she’s a little overrated as an actress – but that’s not her fault, and there’s no doubt that she is genuinely talented.

I also think she’s handling the fame thing very well, and I agree about her personal style being so much better now.

    • Frances says:

She isn’t overrated. She has been winning awards since 2008

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

      +2
Her dress could please to Kylie Jenner

The story about to “be fat”is happened when she was casted by Hunger Games.Katniss is skinny in the books whereas Lawrence looked thin and heathy
I remember when herself made some jokes on her fat butt at TV when some pics with her family at Hawaii are released

      • Liv says:

Did you read the books? Katniss wasn’t supposed to look super skinny, she hunted and got her family food to eat. Katniss lost much weight when she came out of the arena and they could easily had used CGI then. They didn’t. Not her fault.

Besides it’s just a film in which actors and actresses act…I don’t want to see someone starving just because the character does. Use CGI dammit.

      • korra says:

@Liv that’s ridiculous. Sometimes part of acting and playing a character well is to physically transform themselves. For the hunger games movies her losing weight is unnecessary because the movie doesn’t treat hunger, food, poverty, etc with much nuance. They had such a unique opportunity in the first one to really showcase the effects of hunger on the human body and the stark differences in how Katniss’s body functions and looks when starving, adequately nourished, and then having her fill of however much food she wants. But they just aren’t those types of movies.

      • bettyrose says:

Katniss wasn’t “skinny.” She was underdeveloped the way girls who are malnourished in their early teens are (think figure skaters who never grow to full height). Ironically, Kristen Stewart has a more appropriate build to play Katniss, but JLaw is more suited in acting ability. Honestly, after her role in Winter’s Bone, it would’ve been hard to ignore her as a potential Katniss.

  4. Freebunny says:

Sure, cause she has so much struggle with weigth…..

    • Grace says:

Go to see what ugly things that Manohla Dargis, Jeff Wells and Hollywood reporter said about her weight when the first Hunger Games was released in 2012.

      • Valois says:

I only remember comments about her not looking as emanciated as Katniss, who is a scarfing girl. I wouldn’t call that ugly-

    • Jib says:

I don’t know what the heck she is always talking about with being overweight. She is very thin now, so of course she isn’t body shamed.

Jen: just like us, struggling with her weight. Ha!

      • Jill says:

She has talked about producers showing her pictures of herself in a bathing suit and telling her to lose weight asap – back in her younger days, when she was starting out. So yes, she was body shamed – and fairly seriously too.

  5. Kiddo says:

This is kind of a Reese Witherspoon look. Comparatively, I think I like the shorter hair better. It made her more recognizable and unique. Are the extensions for a role?

As to the weight, I’m glad she didn’t go gonzo to meet expectations of thin.

  6. Jayna says:

Well, she’s thinner and in a form-fitting dress. She not exactly what she first started out as bodywise that she’s talking about, which was never heavy anyway, but she’s thinner.

    • Liv says:

I noticed that as well. Probably the effect of people constantly telling you that you’re heavier than other actresses and that you should lose weight for roles.

      • Liz says:

She’s still doing X-Men so has probably spent the last few weeks preparing for and shooting an action film it’s not surprising she looks so fit.

    • Alex says:

She’s also been filming two back to back high intensity franchises for the last four years

      • Kitten says:

Yeah I really don’t think this was so much of Jen dieting to conform to Hwood.
I would think the demands of a busy film schedule alone would keep her pretty fit.

      • Alex says:

That and she’s 24…its really easy at our age.

      • korra says:

How is it easy? I really hope we exaggerate youth as the reason for why someone can maintain their weight/figure. But I’m young and probably have no idea what’s coming. I’m around her age and I strive to live a very active lifestyle. I still have to watch what I eat otherwise I gain and I’m trying to lose. I mean I get to enjoy my sweets every now and then, but I can’t go overboard and still lose weight. I’m not miserable, but I’m not exactly eating with abandon.

      • Alex says:

Easier for sure. I eat better now but in college I ate whatever and had no problems. *shrugs*

      • korra says:

@Alex Not true for me. I ate whatever I wanted in college and gained. I was 20 pounds overweight. I had always been overweight but this was the most I had ever been. Now a few years out I actively watch my diet and my activity levels, I lose. I really do think aging plays a role, but not that big of a role. I think the bigger cause is our activity levels and overeating. I was not super active in college, but I ate like I was.

  7. Liz says:

She’s 100% correct. The actresses that have to deal with directors and producers telling them that they should lose more weight will always be in a far less powerful position in Hollywood, once you’ve had such massive success like she has I can’t see it still happening.

  8. Toniko says:

That blue dress is one size too small for her.

  9. Ronda says:

of course its like that, but what does it help? by definition the top can only be a handful of people so how does it help the whole rest?

  10. Kate says:

She’s right. Most A list female actresses are slender, but very few are scary skinny.

It’s the starlets who have to stay ultra skinny. Partly because they’re usually cast as the girlfriend in crappy films and a large percentage of Hollywood actors are way shorter and leaner than you’d think from seeing them on screen. A regular sized woman would make it obvious, and no ones going to bother with inventive camera angles and lighting when you can just get someone smaller to play ‘the girlfriend’. Partly because fashion=attention, but no ones going to make them custom, so they need to fit into sample size. And I increasingly think it’s become a self fulfilling prophecy. We complain that female actresses have to be insanely skinny, and up and coming actresses take that on. But if you actually look at the most successful actresses right now, Jolie and Emma Stone are the only two who are unusually thin, and in Jolie’s case the wardrobe department on her films work overtime trying to hide that which shows its not the ideal.

All the others, Meryl, Reese, Sandra, Julia, Amy, Julianne, J-Law, Cameron, Kate, Cate, Jessica…most are slim, but they all have very different shapes and none of them are super thin.

  11. mädchen says:

Every woman is womanly. Let’s not use it as an insult. There are many different types of human body and every one of them is beautiful.

  12. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

I’d cop a bit of body shaming for the money she’s on. I’d also trade my problems for her’s in a heartbeat.

  13. Jules says:

Good Lord Jennifer Lawrence has an amazing figure!. I imagine that upon receiving those notes from producers that she made paper airplanes out of them and sent them flying into a waste basket or out the window.

I think it’s wonderful that Lawrence never caved and gave into their demands. Good for her!.

  14. OrigialTessa says:

That dress looks cheap and tacky to me. No style at all, you could buy it at Express…and the shoes too. Not my thing at all.

    • Naddie says:

The dress is terrible, you can tell the only intention from the people who designed and made it is to show off the wearer’s body.

    • sofia says:

Thank you! I just saw the photo and thought “uh-oh” but then I read the compliments about her style and felt a bit confused. Tacky indeed:/

  15. Jess says:

    Damn, girl!

    jLaw looks fab!

  16. Sara says:

I don’t think she’s bragging, I just think she’s being honest. And anyway, Jennifer Lawrence is still really thin, she’s just not underweight like many other actresses. I’m sure she still diets and works out, she just seems like she occasionally gets to eat like a person who isn’t obsessed with her weight. The best thing about her is that she is really a fantastic actor. I love her in everything she does, from Winter’s Bone to American Hustle.

  17. mark says:

Has anyone ever called her fat? The only person who brings up her weight is her and it’s funny how everyone here is saying right on to Jennifer but will rip on Emma Stone for being to skinny.

    • Alex says:

When she first started out yes she was called fat. Check out a few articles from her early day 2010-2012 before her Oscar

    • lucy2 says:

I think some directors/producers/casting agents must have made some comments, given that she’s noticed a difference now that she’s in a position of power. Which is insane, because while she is thinner and more toned now, she’s never had a weight problem at all.

    • Dana says:

I think you can even find an article with the women who did the styling and clothes for that sitcom Jennifer was doing for three years and the women talked about how the producers and such would put pressure on Jennifer to lose weight all the time and she was just 17 by that time.

  18. Alex says:

But she will still try to convince everybody that you can have this body while eating pizza and French fries all day long, right? It’s hard to be relatable and “guys” girl while still being hot.

    • Dana says:

I don’t get this, there are lots of photos of her going to the gym and she always talks about getting fit through working out for the hunger games and xmen so anyone who think she doesn’t work for that body is an idiot .

      • Alex says:

She would have to work out all day for that body if her diet consist of all this junk food she claims she eats. Exercising is never enough.

      • cici says:

She’s 24. My sister eats lots of unhealthy food and is thinner than Jennifer.

Too bad I didn’t get my sister’s genes. I can go to gym 6 times a week and still be two sizes bigger than her.

      • Dana says:

        @Alex
well she said that she hate dieting and prefer working out over that so I bet her diet isn’t so extreme and she is allowed to eat in moderation while she works out.

      • korra says:

I’d figure you’re both right though. I think girl watches her calories to maintain her figure. I don’t doubt at all that she works out hard and lives an active lifestyle where she’s always walking around all the time. But if your diet is not on point, you will still not look like that no matter what your genes. I do think she exaggerates how unhealthily and how much she eats because the public eats it up and/or she probably doesn’t know that she naturally doesn’t eat all that many calories. On top of which it might seem extra special to her because the women around her probably aren’t eating in similar ways.

I’ll wager that she eats healthy quite consistently with that but is able to gorge on pizza and other things on a fairly regular basis because the foods fit her calorie needs to maintain. I mean I can eat pizza even when I’m on a cut because I can fit that slice or “cheat day” into my calories. I’m not as fit as her, but I try to lead a very healthy lifestyle and be very active. But still if my diet wasn’t on point then I wouldn’t be losing weight, maintaining, or gaining whenever I wanted.

      • Annie says:

I was thinner than Jen at her age and regularly pigged out on whole pizzas, Mickey D’s, KFC, full fat ice cream, xxl size frappes and never paid attention to a thing I ate, except when people asked me if I was eating enough, so I added up my calories and found out I was eating far more than enough and that’s all I remember. I was quite physically active but not unusually so for that age group. However that run of luck DOES come to an end, even though I was convinced back then I’d be naturally thin for life and didn’t believe my (somewhat overweight) parents when they said they were naturally thin too at my age. Doh!

    • Nicole says:

Yea ok I’m the same age as Jen and I have plenty of friends who eat like her and are thinner than she is…including myself. Its partly genetic

      • Boston Green Eyes says:

And I would think that being young is also a factor. Because it is totally doable to lose weight while eating a lot and working out at the same time. I remember losing weight while still eating ice cream and whatever the heck I wanted when I was 24-25 when I’d cycle 25 miles a day. Now, if I want to lose weight, I have to not only work out but also cut my caloric intake by a lot!

So enjoy it while it lasts, girls!

      • Annie says:

Yep, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and believe she can eat more or less whatever she wants and keep that figure. But it’s mostly because she’s young, has a fairly physically demanding job AND got the luck of the genetic draw. If you can’t tick all 3 boxes you will probably not be able to eat like her and have her body.

      • korra says:

@ Green Eyes Age plays a role, but I feel like it’s overemphasized how big a role it plays….well I’m at least hoping it is.

      • Annie says:

Green Eyes isn’t exaggerating! In my early-mid 20’s I ate 2000-3000 cals per day, exercised moderately and couldn’t gain a pound. 10 years later I’m just as active, but I gain very quick if I go much over 2000 regularly like I used to.

  19. Adrien says:

Jlaw is overly jolly lately. Not just typical goofy Jlaw, she’s strangely happy. I bet she’s smoking whatever it is Chris Evans is smoking.

  20. Naddie says:

We’re moving forward, but in small steps. Or, I should say, we’re taking small steps, but moving forward. Althought she’s still pretty standard in her looks, I appreciate that instead of posting the results of a new diet and a workout routine, she’s talking about what really matters. And yes, reminding directors and producers that she’s in charge of her own career, for those ones, “bitch, I’m JLaw” is necessary and not bragging at all.

    • Kiki says:

The way I see it is everyone is kissing JLaw’s ass, with two franchise movies and critically acclaimed movies, and to add some icing to an acting calibre cake, she at a young age is on top of her game. I would love to be her right now, instead I am fighting to make ends meet by myself with no one to help me. So I envy Jennifer Lawrence. So keep up the good work JLaw you deserve it.

  21. lucy2 says:

I think she looks amazing, and I like her a lot as an actress, but…The Rosie Project? I never would have pictured her for that.

  22. Dana says:

I loved her makeup and hair this comic con weekend not sure about the clothes but I think I liked that jumpsuit and the white dress both seem sophisticated and she does have an amazing body. I love it when actors enjoy themselves at these promo events and she just seemed really happy and grateful to be there with the fans.

  23. A.Key says:

I don’t get it, so she’s saying actors who have no connections have to struggle at first and adapt to other people’s wishes?? Wow, shocking. Cuz no one ever suffers like that at a job when they’re young and have little experience……….

    • Alex says:

But actors are special. Actors have harder job than anybody in this world. They suffer for art. At least that’s what they claim. Every single actor at one point whined about the “hardship” they have to suffer. For the money they get I would change places without even thinking. And I would never say a bad word about media&paps because they make people famous so they can get even more money.

  24. FishBeard says:

I love her! She’s a woman, therefore her body will be critiqued and judged no matter what shape she’s in. I also genuinely believe that she practices what she preaches, but nevertheless it’s good to have someone calling out the ridiculous body standards for women in the media.

  25. Annie says:

Her body is very nice, but I’m starting to wish she’d STFU about it; it’s really just sounding like someone’s fishing for compliments at this point. OK Jennifer, you have the perfect perfect slim- yet- not- too- skinny socially approved body that everyone aspires to, now can we move on? Pretty please?

  26. nubiahbella says:

I am not seeing that amazing body everyone is talking about lol. I am tired of seeing average Blonde women being described gorgeous when they are far from it. JLaw could walk in the street and no one would give a second look if she was not under the spotlight.

    • Jill says:

You have high standards – I certainly don’t see J-Law level bodies wandering around where I live, so maybe I need to move! Having said that, a huge part of her appeal is her personality, which is no bad thing.

      • Naddie says:

The thing about her looks (to me, at least) is that she’s gorgeous for a woman who passes by on the street, but next to people like Scarlett Johasson, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o, or even a more conventional beauty like Rosamund Pike, she’s average. Maybe that’s what nubiahbella means? Or not, that’s only my opinion.

      • A.Key says:

No, it’s true, take away her name and fame, and you have an average early 20s chick. Hundreds of chicks like her go to college with me. Most girls this young are good-looking and slim.

    • Angela says:

She’s an actress not a model

  27. Helo says:

    Gorgeous!. Lawrence’s body is everything.

Also, the woman speaks the truth, so…no definitely not bragging more of a “bitch, I’m J-Law” (Oscar winner/Three time nominee, B.O. Winner, beloved in the industry and popular as all get out.

  28. Ash says:

Who knows where I can get these sunglasses? Need them!

  29. bluhare says:

I guess I’m the only person who thinks she’s as fake as fake can be. Her schtick’s getting a bit overdone.

  30. Jules says:

@bluhare: Yeah, looks like yours is the minority opinion (LOL!).

Anyway, I think she looks gorgeous in both dresses. Really like her a lot as she is a terrific actress with a great personality.

  31. Frank Gallagher says:

She needs long hair when it’s short all you see are moles.
