Olivia Wilde in Prabal Gurung at the VF Oscar Party: lovely or tacky?

Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2016 - Arrivals
As Kaiser has mentioned recently, many women had better party dresses for this year’s Oscars than the ones they chose for the ceremony. Like Olivia Wilde, for instance, who was in an extremely plunging v-neck white Valentino for the Oscars. When she was talking to Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet you could sense that he was struggling not to look down. On Twitter, The Frisky wondered if Olivia was using Kim Kardashian’s gaffer tape boob trick (link NSFW-ish) to keep her girls contained in that dress.

At the Vanity fair party, Wilde switched into another deep v-neck gown, a red Prabal Gurung with a loose flowing skirt, an open back and a bow at the back of the neck. This gown would have popped on the red carpet more, but I get why she went for the more dramatic and revealing white gown – she wanted to stick out and it worked.

Here’s Tina Fey in a similarly cut v-neck red gown, in Carolina Hererra. Hererra used to dress Renee Zellweger for the red carpet and I loved her classic looks. Tina really brought it at the Oscars this year and both her after party gown and her look for the red carpet were on point.

Nina Dobrev was in a floral print scoop neck gray Elie Saab gown with dusty pink floral overlay. Nina just looks incredible here. This dress isn’t overdone, it has just the right amount of details and I love the skinny pink belt. Nina just broke up with her boyfriend, Austin Stowell.

Nikki Reed, at the Elton John party, was in a Francis Libiran beige gown with a fish tail, cap sleeves and an open back. I don’t usually like gowns in this color but this works somehow. Her makeup is a little too goth for my taste though.

    Tina looks slouchy…

Olivia Wilde is a beautiful woman and I don’t hate the dress but I definitely think she could have done better. She has incredible skin, but she’s looking a bit shiny here..

    • mia girl says:

I think she is so beautiful and always has a glow about her… but that was missing a bit on Sunday. I’m chalking it up to bad make-up/hair.

    • qwerty says:

She actually has pretty bad skin for Hollywood., esp. if you zoom in on her forehead. Lainey even had a blind about how bad it was a few years back. Her bone structure is amazing though, and I like this colour on her.

  2. Sarah01 says:

Tina’s dress is almost perfect, I don’t like trains. The colour is gorgeous. Both her looks were beautiful!

  3. lorelei says:

The VF party is supposed to be the best/most coveted one, right? I’m asking because I love Nina Dobrev and I’m really happy to see her slowly permeating the Hollywood upper crust πŸ™‚

    • Mimz says:

I Love Nina too, Happy to see her there, and she’s filming with Vin Diesel. She looks great.

  4. Lama Bean says:

I love all these dresses, but I don’t get why Nikki Reed would wear that lipstick! I’m terrible at makeup and even I know that’s a bad color combo with the hair and dress.

  5. Josephine says:

I love Nikki’s dress. Too bad she wore that dark lipstick, but the dress was perfect for her.

  6. aims says:

I like Nikki’s make up. I really wasn’t feeling the Oscar’s this year, so I skipped it. I knew anything that was important I would read it here.

  7. minx says:

Olivia looks beautiful; she could have had a little brighter makeup or something. But the dress is gorgeous and she has a great figure.
Tina needs to throw those shoulders back. Don’t slouch!

  8. missmerry says:

that boob taping…do they put something over their nipples to prevent them from being ripped off when you take the tape off?

if it was comfy ( i’ve never tried it myself), I’d tape my boobs any day over wearing a bra lol

  9. OrigialTessa says:

I think Olivia looks like she’s having hot flashes or something. Just really oddly flushed, and her hair looks like it’s stuck to her head.

    • Apsutter says:

She definitely looks a bit tired to me, but she’s so gorgeous. Ihave a real soft spot for her tho ever since she was on House plus she was genuinely good in The Lazarus Effect, both sympathetic and sweet and terrifying.

  10. D says:

I’m kinda impressed with women who can wear a deep v-neck dress and look comfortable and relaxed. I would constantly and nervously be checking “Am I good? Everything in place?” .

    • Calcifer says:

@D who said ‘I’m kinda impressed with women who can wear a deep v-neck dress’. I don’t think Olivia pulls it off, she really doesn’t look all that good in a deep V-neck dress. Not in this red one at the VF party and certainly not in the white one she wore at the Oscars. It makes her chest look bony. But now that I am thinking about it, it’s not a look I like on any one, because it does something strange to the body’s proportions.

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I love Carolina Hererra, but I think Tina Fey looks awful. Her hair and makeup are all wrong and the dress does nothing for her arms or body. Sorry. I think she’s a pretty woman, but this was a bad choice for her.

    • detritus says:

      Agreed.
Tina Fey is super fit, and this dress made her boobs look bad, her shoulders bad, and her waist look bad. Like the colour is nice, and the material is nice, but damn the cut is not good.
ETA – after looking at it again, maybe if they put one more band above the first two. If it was cinched in just a bit, all would be forgiven.

  12. Bettyrose says:

Gawd the 70s swinger dress Olivia wore at the main event had the bald, beer gutted dudes at work still slobbering the next day.

  13. HeyThere! says:

Zoom the Nina picture into her rings. I LOVE dainty, unique jewlery. I wouldn’t have paired them side by side, but I want both of them! LOL

  14. Farhi says:

When will the split to the navel fashion will be over? I think it has been 2-3 years, it has been overdone to death.
Can’t stand any of these split-to-the navel dresses.

I think Olivia is stunning, I find her face very attractive, but I don’t like her gowns this season.

    • Calcifer says:

I completely agree about the split-to-the-navel dresses, it’s a horrible look for most women.

And not to be mean, but I do not think Olivia is attractive at all. She looks like a vintage barbie-doll to me, you know, those from the 1950’s with the ‘pushed-in’ faces.

Something nice: The color of that Prabal Gurung dress is great, and great on her as well. It really flatters her.

  15. AlmondJoy says:

Both gowns look like they’re swallowing these beautiful ladies up. I hate how the bust area looks.

Nina Dobrev πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎ simply breathtaking! Absolutely LOVE.

Nikki Reed doesn’t pull off dark lipstick well πŸ€”

  16. HP says:

I’m sure the minority with this, but I thought Olivia’s gown at the main event was one of the prettiest this year. In the crowd very few went for something bold and daring she stood out for me(along with Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie). And she looks great here too. She and Sudeikis sure have the vibe of a hip couple.

Tina wore lovely dresses, I like this one a bit better then what she wore in the ceremony. But I wish she would wear her hair down.

  17. TreadStyle says:

Tina absolutely nailed both her looks. Love this dress. I also like this one of Olivia’s a hundred times better then her white one! Nina looks very boring and blendable to me at all times. I can’t look at anything but Nikki’s makeup! Why?!

  18. Lucy says:

I find myself liking Tina’s style more and more lately. I enjoy her as a Fashion Girl.

  19. kri says:

All of these are better than most of the red carpet looks.

  20. OriginallyBlue says:

I liked them all. Olivia looked shiny and exhausted and Nikki does not pull off that dark lipstick.

  21. lucy2 says:

As sick as I am of the plunging neckline, I really do like Olivia’s dress. I hated her red carpet outfit so much, this is a welcome improvement.
Tina’s is pretty too, but looks like it could have been fit better in the bust.

  22. Jib says:

I just don’t understand why more women don’t wear Elie Saab. He would be my “go to” designer if I were in the public eye like this. Yes, his gowns are just “pretty,” and not edgy, but most of these women can’t handle edgy fashion anyway. Like Olivia Wilde’s white gown, they just end up looking ridiculous. No one looks ridiculous in Elie Saab.
