Robin Wright is ‘thrilled’ that Sean Penn’s movie flopped with critics in Cannes

As we learned last week, Sean Penn’s new film is awful. The film is The Last Face, which Sean Penn directed with his then-girlfriend Charlize Theron in the lead role. The Last Face is a love story set amidst a humanitarian crisis in Africa, and the reviews were flat-out terrible. A lot of critics at Cannes called the film the worst movie shown at the festival. Critics said the was so bad, it might have been the reason why Charlize ghosted Sean. So guess who’s really happy about the bad reviews for Ham-face?

Robin Wright is enjoying a delicious dish of schadenfreude now that her ex-husband Sean Penn’s movie “The Last Face” was savaged by critics. One insider told me, “Robin is thrilled the movie bombed. She has too much class to say so publicly, but this was her baby.”

The film was a passion project that Wright tried to develop for several years. She was attached to star in it with Ryan Gosling, and then Javier Bardem, but could never get financing. When Wright divorced Penn, he optioned the script by Erin Dignam and put his then-girlfriend, Charlize Theron, in the starring role as a humanitarian doctor in war-torn Africa.

As a source told me two years ago, “This is obviously a vindictive move against his ex-wife.”

This week, my insider told me, “It would have killed her if Charlize had won an Oscar in the role that was meant for her.”

Wright’s publicist declined to comment, as did Penn’s and Theron’s.

Another Hollywood insider noted that Wright is riding high with “House of Cards,” and said, “She’s quietly smirking while smoking by a window and banking all those sweet Netflix millions.”

Robin is riding high these days – she’s getting the best reviews of her life for House of Cards, and now she’s getting equal pay for her work too. She’s also got a significant role in Wonder Woman AND she’s moving towards directing more often. Everything is coming up roses for Robin Wright! So, yeah, I feel she has every right to wallow in her schadenfreude for a while. I would guess that Robin’s bad feelings are more towards Sean than Charlize. If anything, I would love to see a Charlize and Robin have a girls’ lunch to bitch about Ol’ Ham-face.

SHE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO BE THRILLED. YOU GO MS. ROBIN WRIGHT.

  2. Christin says:

She should be smirking. And I would pass on a girls’ lunch. I think CT knew exactly what she was doing.

  3. aims says:

It seems that Sean’s ex’s can’t stand him!! With exception to Madonna.

    • Dangles says:

She’s probably conflated nostalgia for her youth with nostalgia for her realationship with him.

    • Mia V. says:

Madonna will stand him if it brings her attention, she probably hates him too.

  4. roxane says:

I didnt know it was passion project, what a shitty move from Penn. He’s so vindicative.

    • tracking says:

+1 Really gross, yet somehow not that surprising.

    • Pinky says:

He is fighting Lena Dunham for the title of “The Worst.” We need to add an Olympic event where the worst contenders can compete for the gold medal.

IKR?!? Given all she withstood from him! As I recall there was a revolving door of him cheating and then reconciling! Why in the world he’d be butt hurt w/Robin is mystifying

    • C says:

      Jackass

    • Mare says:

She should be happy she didn’t sink her own money on this project.

  5. Nancy says:

Team Robin. Hope his movie goes down in flames.

  6. Jellybean says:

I read that headline and thought less of her. Then I read the article and it seems she has every reason to gloat.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Great minds and all – see below. ❤️

Specially when she’s so classy enough to not say a word about it. I can’t really recall a bad comment or a bitchy comment about Penn, if not for a couple of passive-egressive digs about him. She never played the victim, and we all know she could have, she even had the right to. But he’s been bitching and whining about her and their marriage like he’s still hurting.

And taking this project and putting Charlize in the role Robin wanted just confirms that he might not be totally over it, he hasn’t moved on if he stills seeks revenge. That alone should have been a red alert sign for Charlize. Maybe Robin had something to do with their break up? Who knows? For me the guys is still hurting over that divorce.

    • Myrna says:

      @Jellybean
      Ditto

    • tealily says:

Aw, see, I read the headline and HOPED she had said it publicly! It would be so unlike her!

    • Esmom says:

I went through the same process, lol.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Until I read the article, I thought it was a little petty. But under the circumstances, I’d be gloating, too.

    • Pinky says:

      Completely agree.

Someone (a commenter) mentioned this in a previous post a few days ago, so I understood why she’d feel vindicated.

It must have been known prior to now that it was ‘her project’, so I side eye both director and his ‘star’. Clearly a revenge move.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Really, so mean of him. He sounds like such a douche.

      • FingerBinger says:

Side eye Javier Bardem as well. He’s been attached to the last face as long as Wright has.

  8. OG MJ says:

Botox sprinkles aside, she looks so much healthier and more youthful now, compared to that photo where she’s the scalloped potato side dish to the ham.

    • Esmom says:

I don’t know, she looks pretty great in both eras. I actually like her hair long, the short ‘do was refreshing for a while but now I’m finding it too severe.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lol at the potato side dish.

  9. FingerBinger says:

“She’s quietly smirking while smoking by a window and banking all those sweet Netflix millions.” That was a nice touch. Richard Johnson must post here or his source does because somebody posted the same line almost verbatim.

    • Dee Kay says:

I think that line describes Claire Underwood’s go-to move when she is self-satisfied (quietly smirking while smoking by a window). If two writers used it, it’s because they’re both painting a picture of Robin Wright reacting as Claire Underwood would in a similar, trouncing-one’s-enemy kind of situation. Which is, indeed, a delicious picture.

  10. bammer says:

Didn’t know this what an asshole thing to do out of spite. Charlize ain’t shit either for agreeing to do this.

  11. Bridget says:

Jerk thing to do on his part, but considering that the terrible reviews were based on the content of the movie and it’s white savior narrative, I don’t think Robin should be advertising that she wanted to make it first.

  12. Tiffany says:

Charlize must have really been dickmatized to read this script and agree to read lines from it….on camera….for other people to see…..at some point.

  13. jferber says:

I like Azurea’s phrase “malignant narcissist.” Of course that’s what Sean Penn is (and many men in sports and entertainment). He’s furious at Robin because of blah, blah, blah, but never judges his awful and demeaning behavior toward her. Robin had the gall to leave him. HIM. After all he had done for her. She had no right to leave him because blah, blah, blah. He had complete freedom to do whatever and she was lucky, no, blessed, that he was in her life UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES (cheating, beating, neglecting to thank her at the Oscars, etc.). His were always the foibles, hers were always the crimes. I could seriously kill a man like this and men like these have truly killed their ex-wives (some even getting away with it
and feeling not the slightest compunction because “it was all her fault).

    • Dee Kay says:

This was a powerful description of narcissism. Thank you for writing this.

    • Shelly says:

And to me it explains why Madonna chooses to pander to him and pet his ego.
Malignant narcissists never stop hating and never forgive, it’s all as fresh as the day it happened.
So considering what he did to Madonna in the past, what she is doing is the safer thing for her.

Normally what you have to do is cut them out totally, Ghost them, but its hard to do that when your famous.

To me it shows just how scared of him Madonna still is.

  14. Vinot says:

Everything is coming up Milhouse for her and I am here for it!!

  15. Christine says:

I can’t stand Sean Penn but actively rooting for someone to fail and then gloating when they do is bad karma.

I saw a rumor on the internet that Robin Wright has been hooking up with Ben Affleck occasionally over the years. Do we think this is true? And I see that she has a role in DC Comics…

  16. Josefina says:

Lol I am thrilled his film flopped and I’ve never even met him. Team Robin.

  17. Laura says:

Team Robin 1000%! So glad she finally ended it with Penn.
