Claire Danes in Schiaparelli at the Emmys: aggressively bronzed or fine?

wenn29549074

For a while on the Emmys red carpet, everyone was talking about poor Claire Danes. Like, remember when Claire used to win tons of awards? Remember when we couldn’t wait to see what she was wearing? While no one seems to be watching Homeland anymore, some of us do still care what she’s wearing. And her Emmy look last night was… not great. The Schiaparelli couture gown itself was inoffensive, I guess. I mean, I don’t like the little cleavage-blocker in the center of her chest (and yes, it’s part of her dress), it looks stupid. But the rest of the gown is fine. No, we were talking about Claire because she either has a bad sunburn or she was aggressively fake-tanned. Or both. Like, in some light she looked burned, in some light she looked like she was 10 out of 10 Boehners. It was not good.

In lieu of an actual Beyonce sighting – Beyonce did not deign to attend, which was a good call because she lost! – we had to make do with the very fabulous Laverne Cox. Laverne was totally serving up some Beyonce Realness in this gold Naeem Khan gown and big, bouncing hair. I loved this on her and I thought she looked amazing. She presented at the Emmys too, and she said something nice about Jeffrey Tambor and Transparent, saying that trans actors do need more chances and more trans stories need to be told.

The tan was weird but overall she looked very pretty. I still watch Homeland. I love it.

    • BeBeA says:

Yes, the tan is sooooo bad, it’s like she’s trying to “out bronze” the actual award.

    • EM says:

I’m so gullible I thought it was a real sunburn (not tan) and felt bad that she stayed out in the sun too long. If that was intentional ….oops.

    • Sticks says:

Agree. Tan is terrible but I think she looks gorgeous. And I love the dress. And am very excited for upcoming Homeland season.

  2. Snazzy says:

That tan is horrid and so is the dress. But I’m an evil person and it made me laugh. Is that bad?

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

No. It is very sensible, Snazzy. Carry on.

    • The dress looks as if it was designed to cover an unfortunate third nipple.

      • Justjj says:

She looks like South Beach spring break Barbie… Not even South Beach… She looks like Virginia Beach spring break Barbie? Or more like South Padre Island… Tacky cruise ship dinner buffet. It’s just. Unforgivable. She needs to fire everyone who let her walk down a red carpet looking like this.

  3. Clare says:

Her tan looks like Charlize Theron’s that year she won the Oscar. Beautiful woman, ridiculous tan. And homeland is unwatchable.

  4. Mew says:

The dress makes me think instantly Total Recall’s lady with 3 boobs.

  5. AmericanInOz says:

I stand by my previous comment.

She looks like Heidi Montag here.

  6. Maum says:

That orange faces ages her so much and kills the dress.

  7. msd says:

I really want to grab some purple shampoo, hold her down and wash out the aggressive yellow in Claire’s hair. That shade doesn’t suit her and makes the spray tan look even weirder. Everything is sort of blending together here, what with the dress being gold too. I don’t love Laverne’s dress either but at least her hair and makeup are great, as always.

    • Kitten says:

She has no excuse with the invention of Olaplex! This is what happens when you have strong red undertones and you try to go blonde. You have to be really careful of it ends up yellow/orange. I mean, at the very least she could use a cool-toned blonde to try to offset it.

      It’s so distractingly bad.

    • Little Darling says:

Agreed! Yellow blond hair is particularly grating when you know there are so many other more flattering shades of blond she could have! It’s like her head goes from
Gold yellow into her bronzed put gold yellow face into the gold yellow of the dress. Every time I go back up I am appalled at the hair color. It looks like it came from a box.

I wonder if her face was a chemical peel
Gone wrong and then covered up with darker bronzer/foundation? It almost looks like a ski mask sunburn.

  8. Persephone says:

It took a moment to recognise Hugh Dancy without the floppy hair.

  9. Dippit says:

I didn’t even notice the twiddley cleavage detail. All times I saw CD I was too busy focused on her colour. It was akin to that episode in “Friends” when Ross counts incorrectly in the tanning booth.

  10. minx says:

Her tan is edging towards Trumpish.

    • Esmom says:

Yes. And it looks especially aggressive next to her pale husband. And it’s too bad because I think her hair looks great. I don’t love the dress but she’s worn worse.

  11. Macheath says:

Looks like she’s wearing the wrong foundation shade too. A bit heavy on the makeup but the dress itself isn’t bad (minus the weird cleavage veil). Laverne looks nice too although she tends to wear very cleavagey dresses a lot.

  12. Thisisnotyou says:

She looked like a glow-in-the-dark Cheetos with that ridiculous spray tan. The hair was horrid, she needs to stick with an auburn color hair. The dress wasn’t bad.

  13. Lipreng says:

I can’t believe everyone is talking about this being a tan. It clearly is only her face that is so dark. She is just wearing a way too dark foundation shade. Look how pale her ears are in comparison to her face.

  14. Sister Carrie says:

I’ve never seen bronzer look so painful.

  15. ichsi says:

Sue me, but I really like the dress. The tan (foundation?) is terrible, it blends everything too much, but the dress itself is interesting and it fits her really well. Claire has a small chest that allows some cleavage experimentation and I like that she went for it. The husband accessory doesn’t hurt either.

  16. MrsBPitt says:

I do not like either of these ladies gowns….

  17. QQ says:

    Laverne Looks EXQUISITE

Claire Danes Moved like her dress was a Poor fit the way she kept hunching and rounding her shoulders… Someone on Twitter said that this is exactly what happens when you leave your wings in the Oven Juuuuussttt A Lil bit so they get the RIGHT color.. This is her color… also You’d thing Tan/Gold Wavy hair was gonna transform her into Bland Lively’s Cali Breeziness but NO, Claire Danes STAYS looking Pained and Pinched to death

  18. serena says:

Nope, not fine. She’s orange and it seems they did a bad job with her make up too -also too orangy.

  19. jen says:

LOL! 10 out 10 Boehners!!! HAHAHAHA!!!

  20. shannon says:

this depresses me. She looks awful, but she doesn’t have to. what happened to my Angela Chase? Also, Hugh looks over it in every single picture they take together.

  21. Pants says:

Laverne looked great, but I feel like she’s lost just a smidge too much weight recently.

  22. lucy2 says:

Claire looked really orange, and I didn’t care for the dress. I still watch Homeland but it isn’t what it first was, and should probably have ended a season or two ago instead of petering out the way it seems to be. It remains a great career move for her though.

Laverne looks great (except for the sheerness of the skirt), and I love what she (and Jeffrey Tambor) said about giving trans actors a chance.

  23. Machiamellie says:

I wish Laverne’s dress wasn’t partially sheer. If it were 100% opaque, it’d be one of my favorites for the night. I’m just over sheer.

  24. Miss Jupitero says:

    Good GAWD.

Someone needs to get the memo out to all of these people: orange is dead. Just stop. You are fooling nobody. It does not look good.

I can’t even look at a fake tan now without being reminded of a certain cheeto-dusted fascist.

  25. Jessie says:

I can always count on Ms. Cox to bring the old Hollywood glamour. If I want to see perfect hair and a fantastic dress, I immediately check to see what Laverne is wearing. She is always perfection ❤️

Poor Claire… I gasped when I saw her bright orange face last night lol

  26. Gaby says:

    A real life oompa loompa!

  27. Nancy says:

Angela Chase can do what she damn well pleases. Her dress wasn’t bad, she is a natural blonde contrary to some comments I read above. The tan was a fail, but she looked happy and was smiling. Motherhood did her good!

  28. SM says:

    Dear Lord. Trump much?

  29. KBeth says:

Claire Danes looks terrible, bronzer looks painful & the dress looks like Christmas wrapping paper.

  30. Twink says:

I still watch Homeland and can’t wait till January. It’s still an awesome show with great characters for women.

  31. Lola Lola says:

Claire is so beautiful. It’s funny that she looks more orange in the photos by herself than she does next to her husband. Anyway, I think she looks amazing, the dress is very cool and I love Homeland. Completely addicted.

  32. Pmnichols says:

Make up by Oompa Loompa Inc.

  33. emilybyrd says:

Man, they sure look funny together: Claire’s smiling for all she’s worth, and Hugh looks like a headed-for-the-executioner’s-block kind of miserable! Poor guy.

  34. Marianne says:

I dont know if its a tan or if her make-up artist just went overboard with the bronzer. Either way, it wasn’t a very good look.

  35. your momma says:

Yes, Clare was definitely a bit tanned…BUT, take a close look at the photos above…the ones where she looks quite orange it is obvious that the white balance/color temperature of the photograph is very warm in comparison to the other photographs. So, either it’s bad post editing, or it was an intentional move to make her look more orange. It happens with the Laverne Cox images as well. Take note of the tone of the white ABC logo, and the gray of the background, all obviously more warm in some photos than others.

All I wanted to say! Thanks!
