Brad Falchuk: ‘Divorce is terrible, even when it’s the right thing to do’

About a month ago, Gwyneth Paltrow informed us that only peasants live together in the same house after they get married. She was very snotty about it, and very smug about the fact that nearly a year after she married Brad Fulchuk, they still hadn’t moved in together. Gwyneth said that Brad maintains a separate home and they only spend four nights a week together. Honestly, the whole “maintaining separate spaces” thing appeals to me, but Gwyneth made it sound like anything other than HER choice was impossibly gauche. The reality of it was that I don’t think Brad’s children had any desire to spend time with Gwyneth or live under her roof. Brad literally left his wife for Gwyneth, and the vibe I continue to get is that his divorce was not some high-minded conscious uncoupling, and that there was bitter acrimony and his kids possibly blame Gwyneth.

Anyway, after smugly declaring that living apart is SO terribly healthy, Gwyneth then announced a few weeks later that she and Brad were going to be moving in together. Now Brad has a feature in WSJ. Magazine where he talks about their love, their marriage, and finally getting to move in with Goop. The reason Brad is being interviewed is because he’s got that new show, The Politician, on which Gwyneth has a supporting role. The article is paywalled, but here are some highlights:

Moving in with Gwyneth: “I’m moving in September. We’ve just done it slowly. Divorce is terrible, even when it’s the right thing to do. And it’s really hard on kids. Come September we’re all gonna ‘Brady Bunch’ it up, and it’ll be great.”

Gwyneth on working with Brad on The Politician: “We have such a strong friendship and deep knowledge of the other, so it was very easy. I can be very impatient with acting these days, and he was really good at wrangling that impatient side.”

Brad on Gwyneth’s fame: “Gwyneth has a very tough skin. She’s like, ‘You’ve got to relax.’ At the end of the day, we’re getting into bed together… and nothing from the outside world or anybody’s opinion means anything. That whole world of fame is her world. I always tell my kids, we have it great — because if I need to get us a dinner reservation in Rome, it’s easy. But when we get there, nobody knows us. I can operate anonymously in the world.”

Who they really are: “There’s a media version of her and me, but we’re just home cooking dinner. Or she’s just cooking me breakfast. That’s all. We could not be a more normal couple.”

He’s fine with being in the background: “I’m not the person out front. Never been my thing. But it’s to a fault. It has cost me.”

[From ET and CNN]

Yes, I consistently find that men who are content with being in the background will often appear on their fiancee’s Goop magazine to announce their engagement. They’ll sit down for profiles in the Wall Street Journal Magazine, they’ll talk about their married life to anyone, and they’ll hire their famous wife for their TV show. Yes, all of that and Gwyneth makes his breakfast, of course. I’m not saying Brad is a famewhore – he’s not, actually. I’m just saying that the “humble, happy to be lowkey” thing is just a shtick and it’s already wearing thin. If Gwyneth goes to Rome and no one recognizes her, she will throw a f–king fit about it.

Also: “I’m moving in September. We’ve just done it slowly. Divorce is terrible, even when it’s the right thing to do. And it’s really hard on kids.” Ouch. Yeah, again, his kids aren’t a fan of their Goopy stepmother. And Brad’s ex-wife doesn’t want her children being used as pawns in Gwyneth’s holier than thou narrative either.

OMG, how far detached from the average citizen: if I want to get us a dinner reservation in Rome it’s easy. Give me a break. He is just like Goop.

    • smcollins says:

Right? But it’s not like Gwyneth would have even given him the time of day if he was just some Average Joe. She needed/wanted someone on her very privileged level and she found him. And I wonder if it’s not just his kids that have issues with her, but maybe also her kids not completely taking to him too? I imagine her kids are more of a staple in the home with his kids being more of a visitation-type setup, you know I mean? So living together under one roof would have more of an impact on her kids than his (I know I’m making the assumption that the mothers have the majority of the custody but let’s be real). Idk, just a thought.

        > But it’s not like Gwyneth would have even given him the time of day if he was just some Average Joe. She needed/wanted someone on her very privileged level and she found him.

This seems like grasping at straws to see her as some plotting witch to me. Why do you expect a famous multimillionaire to settle down with her plumber? The vast majority of super-rich date people from their own circles, there’s nothing wrong with it. She travels the world whenever she wants to and can afford just about anything, if she doesn’t want to be a guy’s sugarmomma (not something a lot of women find attractive) or live on a budget (why on earth would she want that?), she needs to date someone very rich like her.

    • Esmom says:

I laughed out loud at that. first world problems doesn’t even begin to cover it.

      • Seraphina says:

At some point they need to realize they need to stop talking because they aren’t doing themselves any favors. First world problems is correct. But I’m sure he and Goop are a perfect match.

    • jennifer says:

all this said while looking smug and dopey. they sound perfect for each other.

    • A says:

I mean….I don’t have their privilege, but I’ve lived in Europe and travelled, and it’s not difficult to get dinner reservations in Rome. So aside from sounding obnoxious, it’s also inaccurate.

    • minx says:

Smug and privileged, a march made in heaven!

    • Raina says:

      God these people love food

    • Justjj says:

I can’t. Rich people are so exhausting and uneducated about how the world actually works.

  2. Darla says:

I just cannot stand her, I have a real visceral problem with this woman. I guess this is how most of the crowd here feels about Taylor, which I don’t get. lol

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Am with you on the visceral reaction to Goop, I don’t mind Tay Tay most of the time but she doesn’t get under my skin the way Goop does.

    • minx says:

I don’t mind TS, she has some talent, but Goop drives me nuts. She’s an average actress and her new “career” is a joke.

  3. Chef Grace says:

When I turned 60 I thought I would be more tolerant towards the GOOPS of the world. Sadly I feel like I have rabies and just want to bite those GOOPS.
Her new hubby seems as shallow as she does.

  4. Mia4s says:

“we’re all gonna ‘Brady Bunch’ it up, and it’ll be great.”

    …… 😒

Yeah they’re going to end up splitting. Actually, more likely he will cheat on her and she’ll paste on a smile and go make a chocolate free chocolate cake on Instagram.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Yeah, I give it a few more years for her to line up an upgrade jump off. I can see her next upgrade being someone in politics – Goop has cosplayed Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy for years.

    • Seraphina says:

He is aware that the Brady Bunch was a TV show and they were ACTING??? Maybe he thinks Goop is Pepper Potts and he stole her away from Ironman.

    • lucy2 says:

Considering they both ditched a marriage to be together, and it sounds like there’s issues with the kids, I have to agree. Plus, Gwenyth is insufferable, and he doesn’t sound so hot either.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

The gossip is that his kids can’t stand Goop and thats the real reason it took this long for them to start living together.

      • amayson1977 says:

Can you IMAGINE having her as a step-mother? I’d want to throw gluten-free stone-ground artisinal quinoa crackers at her and pee in her $7400 face cream. And I’m an adult. Poor kids.

      • Trashaddict says:

amayson1977 – best post of the day, I love it!

  5. BlueSky says:

These two deserve each other. “Hey kids! Being married to Gwyneth means we can get a table at a restaurant in another country! That’s great right?” 🙄🙄

    • PlainJane says:

+1 That comment really showed how out of touch he is with this situation.

He had an affair, he left his kids’ mom for the affair, the affair is Goop (another rabbit hole, but lets just consider she talks about their intimate life IN PUBLIC as one example), he marries the affair, and now everybody has to live together???

Decisions have consequences, and these two shallow, self absorbed people made choices that affect everyone in their families. Getting a table in Rome is going to be the least of their problems.

    • pottymouth pup says:

I’m, not so secretly, hoping the Falchuck children are taking notes for an inevitable tell-all

  6. Sayrah says:

So I guess they consciously coupled themselves into an affair. His wife finds out, he leaves her and now his kids and ex think they’re both assholes. Sounds about right. He’s giving me douche chills.

    • Shiba says:

      Here’s the issue for me.

Not every marriage lasts (especially in HW.). But, G was so publicly extra about their amazing relationship, despite it coming at the cost of his first family. Couldn’t their new life together simply be experienced, rather than paraded, given the continuing upheaval to their children?
Compassionate Recoupling, some might call it…

  7. LORENA says:

    Insufferable!

Although I do agree, as the child of divorced parents, it is horrible! Even if it is the best thing to do, that does not make the process any easier

  8. bears says:

Is he sure he wants to see that much of her? I just assumed the reason they didn’t live together is because no one can stand to be around her that often without choking her out or divorcing her. Of course, she has to put a spin on it like it’s her choice but I think at the end of the day, even the most pretentious yuppie finds her tiring.

  9. Sofia says:

“Come September we’re all gonna ‘Brady Bunch’ it up, and it’ll be great.”

Oooh, I just cringed reading that line following his thoughts on divorce and effect on kids. I don’t think this is going to go well…

  10. Harryg says:

I can also get a dinner reservation in Rome! I have no problem with it! Wtf? You two are annoying.

  11. tw says:

“Conscious uncoupling” – We both cheated and now that my new guy is ready to leave his wife, I’m cool with splitting with my husband.

“Media version of her and me” – The image that WE ENFORCE with every IG photo and interview – that we cook and eat well-rounded meals all of the time.

“Impatient with acting” – Lazy, unappreciative and not that good at it yet handed jobs throughout my career due to nepotism. But I’ll do it for a paycheck and to promote my new husband’s show.

“Brady bunch it up” – Force all of our kids to live under the same roof even though they hate each other and my kids resent my new wife for the affair that tore our family apart.

  12. Mab's A'Mabbin says:

“If Gwyneth goes to Rome and no one recognizes her, she will throw a f–king fit about it.”

Nah, this is part of why she’s insufferable. Anything negative happening in her orbit gets a Gwyneth spin, pulled into her black hole of nonsense where its shape is completely altered and then spewed back out into the cosmos. She’s like Scientology in the flesh…a walking thetan clam. Which is why she was so smug about different homes. How could she accept being hated by his kids and actually respect that, work with it and earn their love or like? No. She internalized, made it all about her and regurgitated some gwynscience about marital living arrangements. I guess now the precise measure of time, space and planet alignment indicate cohabitation necessity.

    • GirlMonday says:

I just dropped in to applaud this comment.

      • Harryg says:

She always makes me think of “The Secret” and how she must be a master in “manifesting” connections and opportunities. It seems a raft always arrives to save her, or a luxury sailboat rather. Can it all be so perfect all the time?

  13. Sue Denim says:

GP once admitted that her baseline emotion is self-loathing. I thought that was revealing, so all of the grasping and pontificating and pretzelizing truths to fit a holier than thou narrative, and worse taking what’s not yours (someone else’s husband) prob comes from some unfillable pit within her. BF prob got seduced, caught up in it all, and his kids will have to pay the price for that. This just doesn’t sound like it’s going to go well…

    • Agenbiter says:

Baseline emotion is self-loathing? Wow, that puts things in a different light. Brings to mind the image of her mother at the recent wedding standing alone looking … sad? Like she wasn’t quite buying what was being sold.

      Sad all around.

      • Sue Denim says:

I know, it made me sad to hear her say that too, it was years ago, around the BP breakup I think, and maybe/hopefully she’s grown out of it w kids and maturity etc. But I don’t know this just doesn’t sound like a good start to a new life, tho actually I do wish them all the best…

  14. PlainJane says:

Reading through everyone’s comments, we are basically saying very similar things: B & G are completely out of touch &/or media spin this situation to their choosing.

Any thoughts on how long this marriage lasts? Will Brad someday apply the statement, “Divorce is terrible, even when it’s the right thing to do” to this marriage?

    • TQB says:

About a hot minute. Can you imagine responding to a question about your NEW marriage with “Divorce is terrible”?!? That’s where they’re starting from – no one has healed from the divorce, and he thinks he’s going to start the f’ing Brady Bunch. Those poor kids.

  15. Anna says:

Sounds like the kids aren’t happy, which is a surprise to exactly two people, Gwyneth and Brad.

An affair is not exactly a sturdy foundation to try and unite your family on, and I feel for those kids.

  16. CC says:

I know I’m in the minority, but I love every snotty, stuck up inch about Gwyneth. She’s one of my faves and I revel in her disconnected world view. She should never change lol. Also, Brad Falchuk is handsome, but totally being disingenuous about not wanting the spotlight.

  17. Trashaddict says:

These two: I’m going to go frow up now-

  18. serena says:

He’s got such a douchey expression on his face.. I can’t.
