Gina Carano: Being cancelled is ‘one of the hardest things that you’ve ever been through’

Gina Carano arrives at the Los Angeles Premiere Of Disney+'s 'The Mandalorian' held at the El Capitan Theatre on November 13, 2019 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States.

Disney/LucasFilm fired Gino Carano about two weeks ago. She was a fan favorite on The Mandalorian, but now she’s being erased from the franchise and the Cara Dune toys are being discontinued. While it was clear that Carano’s anti-Semitic social media post – where she compared the plight of Jewish people during the Holocaust to Republicans in 2021 – was the final nail in her coffin as far Disney was concerned, it’s also clear that Carano knew she was on notice for months, given her increasingly toxic social media behavior. She was literally spreading QAnon conspiracies, mocking transgender inclusion, and screeching about mask mandates hurting her freedom. If you told me that she was friends with many of the January 6th insurrectionists, I would believe you.

Well, as soon as Disney fired Carano, she was hired by Ben Shapiro, an alt-right lunatic who absolutely knows a lot of the Jan. 6th insurrectionists because he helped radicalize them into the terrorists they are now. Shapiro and his production company plan to make a movie with Carano, but before that, Carano sat down with Shapiro for a lengthy, self-pitying interview about the dangers of cancel culture. Some highlights:

Before the anti-Semitic post, she knew she was in trouble with Disney: Carano came out swinging against Disney, admitting the writing had been on the wall since she had crisis talks with higher-ups last year after she was accused of being transphobic. “I’ve been through so much, and I’ve seen so much now, clearly, of the bullying that’s been taking place, and I saw it before. I’m not the only one that’s ever been bullied by this company, and I know that so deeply. I was prepared at any point to be let go because I’ve seen this happen to so many people. I’ve seen the looks on their faces. I’ve seen the bullying that takes place and so when this started… you know it’s only a matter of time. I’ve seen it happen to so many people and I just thought to myself, ‘You’re coming for me, I know you are.’”

Disney executives were watching her like a hawk: She also accused Disney of having a double standard, saying executives had been “watching [her] like a hawk,” but other people “on the same production [could] say everything they want, and that’s where I had a problem. I had a problem because I wasn’t going along with the narrative. I could share a story and would turn things around in the media, but I can’t do that because it would be selling out a friend that I don’t really have the same views as but I’m not gonna sell out someone to take the attention off me… everyone is afraid of losing their jobs.”

On her anti-Semitic post: Carano insisted she wasn’t trying to make comparisons, saying she’s “so inspired by the gentle spirit of the Jewish people going through” the Holocaust. She said her only intention was to “bring people together” and that she believed the post was “more about people tearing each other apart.”

Gina is full of self-pity for being cancelled: “I do want people to know that this has not been easy. I’m a human being, I have so much to learn and grow, and I am. I am deeply understanding, it’s like the curtains got pulled and I’m seeing so much. Being canceled might become trendy one day, but don’t think that when it happens to you, it’s gonna be easy because it’s not. It’s maybe going to be one of the hardest things that you’ve ever been through. But each day that goes by, you find your legs again, and you stop feeling sorry for yourself and you show up. My body is still shaking. It’s devastating, but the thought of this happening to anybody else, especially to somebody who could not handle this the way I can, no, they don’t get to do that. They don’t get to make people feel like that.”

[From The Daily Beast]

I mean, it’s clear that she’s absolutely an idiot. A tone-deaf idiot who centers herself as the victim of every story. She spent the past year spreading vile, hateful, dangerous conspiracies online and when she has to face career consequences for it, suddenly her body is shaking from the trauma of being “cancelled.” Girl, you literally said that your employers had you on notice, and that you knew that if you continued to post that offensive sh-t, you would be fired. Breaking news: Woman did some sh-t knowing she would be fired, yet she’s shocked that they fired her when she did some sh-t.

You weren’t canceled, Gina, you were fired.

    • Julie says:

Imagine having to explain the free market to a Republican. Lol. Disney literally asked her to zoom with 40 of her LGBT colleagues to explain herself and she said no. Is a private company required to risk losing 40 valued staffers to keep an MMA princess happy?

      • stormsmama says:

        lol exactly

also: is it harder than being systemically profiled and marginalized and brutalized?\

        her white fragility is showing

    • Her employer asked her to discontinue doing something that could hurt their brand.

She was hired to do a job, and rep a company. That company did not tell her to stop thinking or feeling or talking a certain (vile, immature, irresponsible, dangerous) way. They just told her to stop posting shit that could fuck with their success. No one is out to get her.

Some people are just pissed that they can’t behave badly in public and get pats on the back for it, anymore. That the World is changing, and it no longer has a place for this shit.

    • khaveman says:

Talked herself right out of a job. I represent the company I work for and I understand that. You have to have boundaries, sorry.

  2. Nutella toast says:

The “gentle spirit of the Jews going [through the holocaust]”???? What???? What does that even mean????

    • Lala11_7 says:

It means they should’ve fired her last year….

    • GillySirl says:

it means “I’m making some s**t up to seem like a nice person”

    • Miranda says:

It’s a cheery, but still incredibly insulting, spin on the old “like lambs to the slaughter” narrative we often hear from anti-Semites who believe that the Jews somehow deserved it because they didn’t fight back. Which is obviously bullshit. Thousands of them did fight like hell, and we will never know most of their stories because they lost their lives while trying to protect, or at least avenge, their people. Others didn’t necessarily fight, but discreetly resisted through sabotage when forced to work in factories producing weapons. They would certainly not want to be remembered as “gentle spirits”.

      • Noodle says:

Yes, @Miranda, spot on. (I think I’ve told this story in the comments before, so forgive me if it’s a repeat.) My neighbor Ruthie was at three of the internment camps from age 14-18 and worked in a munitions factory. She would gather up dirt from the ground and try to hide it on her body so when she was putting bullets together, sand would get mixed in with the powder and the bullets would not be as effective. She survived, and millions did not. They did not go gentle into that good night.

      • kgeo says:

        Exactly.

      • Miranda says:

@Noodle – I love Ruthie. That was such a small and simple act that seems almost insignificant, but she revolted in the only way she could, and probably saved a life or two.

While we’re bragging about survivor connections (and I think bragging is OK when we’re sharing the wartime exploits of badass people!): We had a family friend who was a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, and he did his part by forging ration cards and work certificates. And my stepmom is somehow related (second cousins once removed, or something convoluted like that) to the Oversteegan sisters, non-Jewish members of the Dutch Resistance who were (in)famous for luring German soldiers to a secluded spot with the promise of sex, then shooting them once they were alone. One of them even did a “ride-by” shooting on her bike! (And these girls were quite young at the time, just 14 and 16, so their success in honey trapping shows that Nazis were not only horrible racists, but child predators as well. Damn, huh? They seemed like such “fine people” before!)

      • Noodle says:

@miranda, I love that story. The courage that must have taken… We need to share these stories. This generation of survivors is dying out and soon we won’t have the living to tell their stories firsthand. As we know, Holocaust erasure is alive and well, and it’s critical we keep passing on these stories as often as we can to demonstrate not just the horrors of extremism and prejudice and hatred, but also the resilience and courage of the people who stood against it.

I didn’t mean to brag when I shared the story. We have an incredible opportunity here and elsewhere to share experiences with others, and it’s one of the most powerful things we can do to try and balance out the hateful rhetoric that is all around us. I’m a teacher, and in my classrooms, students connect with their lessons by sharing personal experiences and then listening to the stories of others. That peer-to-peer learning is so powerful, and often much more profound than what I could provide as a “subject matter expert”. In hindsight, I can see how my sharing was, in a way, bragging, but my intentions were good, I promise. 🙂

      • Arpeggi says:

Marek Edelman was a family friend. Even before the war and invasion of Poland, he would have been considered a pain in the arse by many (a Jewish socialist worker party?! That was easily accepted, right?) and he became one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After the war, he fought the communist regime, was a life-long critic of Israel and a defender of Palestinians all while working as a cardiologist whenever he wasn’t in jail or out of work because he was a Jew. His wife was just as badass. There was absolutely nothing about this man that is close to a gentle, helpless lamb or fit the right wingnuts narrative that if only they would have had guns, Jews wouldn’t have faced extermination. These morons are just so freackin stupid and uneducated!

      • Miranda says:

@Noodle – I didn’t actually think you were bragging! Sorry, just poor word choice on my part. But we definitely have every right to be proud of “our” survivors. Like you said, we are losing them, and as they die out, I think we have an obligation to be their voice. Their experiences are, unfortunately, very relevant to what is going on in the US now, as well as other countries where nationalism has taken over. There have been many times in the past 4 years where our Warsaw survivor friend would just shake his head and say, “this is how it starts”.

    • Yonati says:

It means she doesn’t get that those “gentle people” were murdered, beaten into submission, and threatened. She calls it “bullying” when she’s the target, but it’s like a spiritual journey for all those gentle Jews. Jeezus.

  3. Tiffany says:

“….but other people “on the same production [could] say everything they want, and that’s where I had a problem.”

Things like Black Lives Matter, Wear your mask, Trans Lives Matter.

    Things like that Gina.

And if you think you were on the same footing at Pedro Pascal, well, that is a you problem.

  4. Elizabeth says:

Just to take one example, transgender BIPOC are being KILLED by bigots. She has no idea what suffering is.

  5. YAS says:

“Gentle spirit of the Jewish people” has officially killed me. My ghost is the one typing this comment. What in the hellllll?

    • ElleE says:

@yas I don’t want to look this up bc in know whatever I find will shake my fragile faith in humanity but:

The words “gentle spirit “, weird and specific descriptive terms, are prob. code. Those apocalyptic Christians that believe that Israel and the downfall of Israel and DTrump was send by god to lead the Christians to…whatever the end game is?

Dollars to donuts, that is where those words come from. Girl is in DEEP.

    • Giddy says:

Idiot spews idiotic thoughts. She won’t be missed.

  6. lunchcoma says:

This is clearly someone who’s never been through anything actually difficult.

  7. Oy_Hey says:

“but other people “on the same production [could] say everything they want, and that’s where I had a problem. I had a problem because I wasn’t going along with the narrative. ”

Hold on – Is she trying to say what I think she’s trying to say? I read this as her making a comparison between herself and Pedro Pascal. Pedro is a known ally with a trans family member that he’s publicly supported. He’s also the title character of the show. It’s literally his show. Gina posted offensive transphobic and antisemitic memes while being a bad actress with a mumbling problem.

Those are not same Gina. Not even close.

    • Case says:

It really is amazing how these people think being intolerant should be respected as much as being tolerant, kind, and open-minded, lol. They really don’t see the difference. Disturbing.

      • Emm says:

100%. I read something else she said about her Holocaust posts and it was something along the lines of Jews were hated by their own neighbors so how is that any different than people hating conservatives for their beliefs and that we all need to be more kind to one another or else the same thing will happen. Uuummm, those Jewish people you speak of were not actively trying to take the rights away from whole groups of people, they weren’t spreading misinformation to try and get people killed. It had nothing to do with what the Jewish people stood for or believed. This is what I cannot stand about her and all these other assclown “conservatives”. It’s not the same thing and you are the nazis in the story. They preach tolerance for their intolerance. They say it’s not fair that they get cancelled for hating trans people if you don’t get cancelled for loving them.

ETA: I also read she comes from a family with money so of course she’s never faced any real suffering in her white life.

    • TheOriginalMia says:

Yes, she is talking about Pedro. Because he compared children in Holocaust camps to Trump’s cages. She thinks that makes them even. She’s as dumb as they come.

  8. Case says:

Lol, cry me a river. She’s lucky that being willfully idiotic and continuing to promote dangerous and hurtful posts on social media despite being warned not to by her employer is the worst thing that’s happened to her. As an FYI, Gina, that’s not being “cancelled.” Literally any of us could get fired for inflammatory posts on social media.

  9. MarcelMarcel says:

I find it wild that she sacrificed her career and success over this stupidity. Like yes I disagree with her politics so I’m biased. But I totally tone down my radical anarchist ways at work. I’m not being paid to discuss my political opinions. I’m being paid to do a job.

John Boyega, Evan Rachel Woods and Ray Fisher are putting their lives on the line to dismantle violent oppression and help save lives.Gina looks so petty and selfish in comparison. Literally all she had to do was not be a bigot by calling people names. She is an cis white womxn so she was given countless second chances. (That she didn’t deserve).
Nina Simone was blacklisted for creating powerful art with Mississippi Burning. Meanwhile Gina went from a very lucrative job to a slightly less lucrative job. I probably sound bitter but I’m just amazed at her self absorption.

    • MF1 says:

Not only are John Boyega, Evan Rachel Woods and Ray Fisher putting their lives on the line to dismantle violent oppression, they’ve admitted that they knew standing up for their rights could cost them their careers. And they did it anyway, because they have courage and conviction.

Gina doesn’t have a single ounce of that kind of character.

    • cassandra says:

Maybe it’s a Hollywood thing? Or just an idiot thing.

I would think most of us normal working people are used to toning down our views in the workplace. It’s called professionalism. I would love to tell my anti-vax coworkers (who are nurses!) that they are raging idiots who don’t belong in the profession, but I keep my mouth shut.

  10. Amy Bee says:

    Whatever.

  11. Jamie says:

How is she canceled if she was immediately employed by another company and still has a fan base? I’m so tired of people getting mad when their words have consequences. Free speech doesn’t mean we have to like what you say. And if your employer has a policy that they don’t want you spreading a certain type of speech or “narrative”, then guess what sis, it’s a contract violation. I’m sure Fox News would be mad if one of their own were spreading Leftist views.

  12. Merricat says:

Nope, we don’t have to tolerate her intolerance. Folks who think like her really don’t get this–no, your hatred of Others is not equal to my support of civil rights for all; one is an attempt to suppress, the other is an attempt to liberate. Ugh. Hate on your own time, if you must, but don’t bring that nonsense to work.

  13. Murphy says:

Harder than being sent to a concentration camp?

  14. LondonGal says:

‘Finally taking responsibility for the consequences of your own actions is the hardest thing you’ll ever go through’. There. Fixed it for her.

  15. Mireille says:

“Being canceled might become trendy one day, but don’t think that when it happens to you, it’s gonna be easy because it’s not. It’s maybe going to be one of the hardest things that you’ve ever been through.” Gina Carano, mediocre actress

“Bitch, please.” – Mireille, Celebitchy poster

  16. LightPurple says:

    She was not “canceled.”
    She was fired.
She was not fired for her political views.
She was fired because she repeatedly, after contractual progressive discipline, continued to post statements that were bigoted in terms of religion and gender and put her employer at risk of being held to have violated the EEOA and multiple state anti-discrimination laws.
It’s labor law at its most basic.
If she has a problem, she can take it to arbitration with her union against Disney.
    She won’t win.

And Shapiro is a perverted creep.

  17. stormsmama says:

    Also this
“I could share a story and would turn things around in the media, but I can’t do that because it would be selling out a friend that I don’t really have the same views as but I’m not gonna sell out someone to take the attention off me… everyone is afraid of losing their jobs.””

Ummm she sounds like a REAL friend —
Gina that is barely veiled, its clearly you trying to “what about” to an alleged FRIEND
You are awful Karen- I mean Gina

  18. pottymouth pup says:

I just want to clarify that the antisemitic post she was taken to task for was a cartoon about the evil cabal of Jews who control all the money

she deleted that post only to post comparing being conservative to being a Jew during the Holocaust in response to being taken to task for yet another heinous Trumpublican take

    • Courtney B says:

Oh wow! I thought it was the Republicans =holocaust victims. That was bad enough I had no idea about the original post which is just beyond. Thanks for pointing that out.

  19. Lisbeth says:

I’m fed up with this woman! I’m amazed at the amount of people that came out to her defense; people I used to follow on YouTube totally support her narrative. They didn’t show any support for John Boyega and Ray Fisher, so maybe I should have known what kind of people they were. I’m sure glad I can come here!

  20. jbyrdku says:

She’s from a mega rich family in Nevada with political pull. I doubt she’s faced major consequences for anything in her life, so this probably DID come as a shock to her.

  21. Mia4s says:

“ If you told me that she was friends with many of the January 6th insurrectionists, I would believe you.”

Well she went around liking Twitter posts that were supportive of them, so if the shoe fits… 🤷‍♀️

  22. Cel2495 says:

    She is an idiot

  23. Kristen says:

She really, truly believes that being told she has to stop treating other people like shit is an example of her getting bullied. That is bananas.

  24. Doodle says:

So she gets a job in an industry where it’s known half the people in the industry are Jewish and a quarter, if not more, are homosexual. She tweets antisemetic and homophobic stuff. Now she’s upset she got fired from a job in that industry. She’s not cancelled – she’s been given her time back to search for some intelligence.

  25. Courtney B says:

Ben Shapiro freaks out at the slightest whiff, real or imagined, of anti-semitism and goes hard. He doesn’t extend this empathy to other groups though. His number one beef is about ‘woke’ or ‘cancel’ culture and fighting to preserve the (not endangered and wildly misunderstood) 1st amendment. You’re only allowed to be punished if you mock or stereotype other minorities or disenfranchised groups. He’s the biggest hypocrite. He must’ve really had to twist himself into knots over whether to slam her for being anti Semitic or embrace her for being the latest victim of the rabid leftist mob. It’s obvious he chucked his one principle ( hypocritical as it may be) out the window to continue his brave crusade to own the libs.

  26. grabbyhands says:

Jaysus, here we go again with the “I’m still learning and growing” defense.

    YOU’RE A GROWN ASS WOMAN.

I’m so sick of this excuse. PS – I thought this was the rebellion, Gina and that they can’t cancel you if you don’t let them?? So why the big pity party? Choose one because you don’t get to use both.

Lastly, if your employer is giving you enough warnings that you were expecting to get fired, what does it say about you that you kept increasing the noted actions until they did so? It kind of destroys the argument that anything that happened wasn’t brought about by your own stupidity. And frankly, they didn’t fire you – they chose not to renew your contract.

    God she’s awful.

  27. agnes says:

And there she is, still talking, being interviewed, getting attention, spreading her bullshit.
Must be hard, being cancelled so thoroughly. *insert eyeroll emoji here please*

  28. Rocķy says:

Bitch please, conservatives invented cancel culture. Million moms? Elvis? The Beatles? The only thing new is using it against conservatives

    • Dutch says:

Excellent point. My favorite example to to point out about the right’s love of cancelling is The Dixie Chicks.

    • whoops says:

      YES! THANK YOU!

Conservatives and the Right invented and thrive on the concepts they pretend to hate, like safe spaces.

  29. Marigold says:

Gentle spirit of the Jews in the Holocaust. How dare she. She can F right off.

  30. anniefannie says:

If in need of a total day brightener, YouTube the clip of Ben Shapiro being interviewed by BBC’s Andrew Neil. He pulverizes & humiliates Ben in a way only a Brit could pull off…..

  31. Indywom says:

You don’t have to be on social media. I never joined any social media sites until I retired. No chance of anything being misconstrued because I knew that I was a representative of my employer and any missteps could embarrass or expose the company to lawsuits and lead to me losing my job. I am not sure why she didn’t get that. She is dumber than I thought.

  32. Det20! says:

The gentle spirit thing is… no words for this really. Basically all her remarks are hard to believe, but they also show that she probably had (and still has) no clue why she should have paid attention to what her employer said and has no understanding of how messed up her opinions really are.
It’s not like stars and celebrities never come with minimal brains and tons of ignorance and privilege, but this is taking some cake. At this point I seriously hope they will recast her role, so I can continue to enjoy the Cara character the way I did back in 2019, and so that when I rewatch the first two seasons of the Mandalorian in the future I can simply, in my mind, project someone elses head onto her body.

  33. whoops says:

Cancel culture doesn’t exist, queen! You’re just a hateful transmisogynist and anti-semite.

    NEXT!

  34. whoops says:

    what people say: cancel culture
what they actually mean: wait a minute! my actions have consequences????

  35. Heat says:

I’m not even sure why she was considered a “fan favorite”. Her acting was terrible. Goes nicely with her terrible personality.
    Good riddance.

  36. shanaynay says:

Biotch it is time for you to STFU!!! I personally didn’t think she was that great an actress. Her acting is below mediocre at best!

  37. seekiphonic says:

Apart from rolling my eyes in disgust as I read, I wondered if Gina and Marjorie Taylor Greene do cross fit together, working themselves up into a transphobic, toxic rage sweat

  38. seekiphonic says:

Also: I’m imagining Henry Cavill and Gina Carano in a long relationship with each other. Because they were. And my opinion of him sinks even lower.
