John Legend fell out with Kanye West because of Ye’s MAGA politics

Whenever Kanye West isn’t in the news for months at a time, it feels like his image is rebooted and people simply “forget” about all of the f–ked up things he said and did. It would have been nice to see a wider swath of people cancel him for his pro-Trump politics, his friendship with Jared Kushner and his clear election tampering. Kanye’s former publicist is mixed up in the still on-going investigation into election fraud in Georgia. So it’s interesting to hear that John Legend hasn’t forgotten. Legend is a big Democrat. Legend says that he and Kanye fell out because of Ye’s MAGA politics.

John Legend revealed that politics caused a rift in his friendship with Kanye West — leading them to drift apart.

“[Kanye and I] aren’t friends as much as we used to be,” Legend, 43, told host David Axelrod on a Thursday, August 4, episode of “The Axe Files” podcast. “I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting [Donald] Trump, I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly.”

The two have a long history together. West, 45, was even listed as a producer on the “All of Me” singer’s debut album, Get Lifted, in 2004. Over the past two decades, the BFFs have supported each other through both personal and professional endeavors, but that seemingly came to an end after Legend couldn’t get behind West running for office in 2020.

“He was upset that I didn’t support his run for presidency of the United States of America — for understandable reasons,” Legend said. “I wasn’t alone in that, but, you know, he was not happy about that. And we really haven’t been close since then.”

Despite their differences, Legend told Axelrod on Thursday that he still respects his former friend for how open and honest he is about his life.

“I think he’s been very open with who he is and his struggles with mental health,” the EGOT winner explained. “And he’s very real, honestly. So I think there’s not a lot about him that people don’t get … Like he’s been pretty upfront with his opinions, his struggles, all the things that he’s dealing with. And I think what you see with him is pretty much what you get.”

Legend is being pretty diplomatic, and I imagine they still have many friends in common, especially within the music industry. But yeah, I absolutely don’t blame Legend for saying “enough” on Ye. Kanye was making some really horrendous political statements and he was more than happy to be used by Kushner and Trump throughout 2020. Now, do I think the MAGA people were taking advantage of a profoundly unwell man? Yes, but give Kanye some agency too. He was saying that sh-t with his whole chest.

I lost a really close friendship with someone because of their full open and loud backing of trump. That coupled with some nonsense they said about me behind my back that I found out. It can be difficult but life is too short to have people in it you don’t trust and who will outright disrespect you. Good for John.

I wonder how he deals with Christy and her thirsty, very cruel streak because he seems like a really good person. I hope it’s not just a facade.

I lost my best friend too bc of trump….well that and a whole lot of racist ‘jokes’….and it’s so heartbreaking. We had 20 years of laughs, adventures, support…but in hindsight, if those terrible things are in her heart, she isn’t the kind of person I would ride or die for…so I hold our happy memories close to my heart and have done my best to move on. I hope you’ve been able to come to terms with the loss of your friend…my heart goes out to you!

It really is a gut punch huh? I’m fine now, thank you so much for your kindness. He was trolling during the entire election season and so many in our friend group were alarmed trying to figure out WTF he was acting this way. He reached out via FB with this “letter” of apology that I responded with forgiveness but won’t ever be friends again. I could never trust him again.

I find him and Chrissy to be an odd match too – he seems so mellow and nice and low key, and she is…not.

Legend is very politely saying that he pulled the same sh*t on him as he did on Kid Cudi. Kanye has the mentality of a junior HS student.

John only talks about Kanye when he is about to release music n can’t remember the last time Kanye talked about him so I’m starting to feel it’s his publicity strategy now n so his words feel hallow 🤷🏽‍♀️

Lol at someone claiming Kanye is being used for publicity….the man who messed with our election & the entire country’s future with a facist for his own publicity. Kanye West is THE thirstiest person out there, besides Trump. Reminding us of beef we all should have with the man isn’t hollow.

  4. I think this last last presidential election has fractured every type of relationship across the country. My relationship with my son is fractured due to my DIL and her MAGAT loving, vaccination, stolen election rhetoric. You can’t talk to them as they have all been brainwashed. It’s useless and a waste of precious time.

Friends I have known for decades, my favorite niece and her husband, plus their children. I have cut off contact with all of them, except my son and I will text every once in while, but otherwise we don’t visit.

@Bothsides, I agree. I really stepped back from my Trump loving parents and lost a lot of respect for them. It became too hard to see who they had become when I knew them as loving, open, accepting people in my childhood. Fortunately, they began to lose their fervor due to his mishandling of Covid and (they claim) they have stopped watching Fox News. It’s just hard to know they wasted so much of their elderly years buying into inane rhetoric.
