Robert Pattinson: “The hair is 75 percent of my performance”

You know Entertainment Weekly had to put the three leads of New Moon on this week’s cover. There was no way to avoid it. The cover shot isn’t anything special (see here), but the interview preview from EW is pretty awesome. Once again, it’s Sparkles being self-deprecating, but this time he’s actually funny. Sparkles is talking about his hair, and he sort of goes off, joking (I think) about how he asked the New Moon producers if his hair could be “toned down” and “Method”. I can’t believe it, but Sparkles actually has me giggling. Here’s more:

“I swear to you I’ve never experienced anything like this. It’s every single day,” says New Moon star Robert Pattinson of the constant on-set fuss surrounding his character Edward’s signature mane.

During a break from shooting Eclipse, the next film to be adapted from Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight novels, Pattinson — sitting alongside costars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — recounts the continuing saga. “In Twilight, they wanted me to have extensions down to my hips.” (“He’s a liar,” Stewart interjects playfully. “He doesn’t remember. He’s remembering how they made him feel, but they were just, like, down to here [pointing to her shoulders].”) Pattinson continues. “So I told them ‘Look, that’s just not going to happen.’ I said, ‘It looks like this already, I’ll come to set like this.’”

“I sound so stupid, but in a lot of ways the hair is 75 percent of my performance,” the 23-year-old actor admits, his locks now comfortably hidden under a Yankee’s cap. “So in the second one I said, ‘Listen, I need to tone down the hair. Let’s make it a little more real, a little bit more…Method,’” he says with a laugh. “And then in the third one, I’m doing fight scenes and there’s a strand going down my forehead and they’re like, ‘We need to do it again because no one will recognize you! No one will know who it is!’ I have to look like the poster at all times. Just in case they want to use any clip for the trailer. Any clip at all! There were about five people in different departments who, because of my forelock, ended up in tears.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

When you really stop and think about it, Sparkles is sort of right on about his hair being 75 percent of the performance. What’s even more disgusting is that Sparkles doesn’t take care of himself. Sources around him say that he smells and he’s really gross, and he even admitted in a recent interview that his personal hygiene is “so disgusting”. I’m looking at close-ups of his rat’s nest hair, and I can totally believe it. Oh, well. The Twihards love that hair anyway. If he ever cuts it off, it’s going to be like Keri Russell in Felicity - a total revolt. The hair needs its own agent!

  1. I think he’s funny as hell. Who else would say this? I like that he gets how ridiculous it all is. So refreshing. And as far as him being “gross” I think it’s obvious he exaggerates stuff to be funny. I actually don’t like Clooney much, but his humor seems similar.

  2. He’s not lying. He’s a lousy actor. I really don’t get the obsession with him. Big Yuck.

  3. Gross refers to the repulsiveness of his really bad hygiene. He was asked somewhere about the clothes he was wearing and he admitted he’d worn the pants for a few days and he wasn’t sure about the shirt.

His hair’s interesting, that’s true. But he’s got that Johnny Depp greasy-looking hair going on. It works for Johnny and when he’s had it styled by someone else, it works for Sparkles. But I have a feeling he’s unaware of products that you put on clean hair to make it look all greasy and unkempt. His seems to be an all natural byproduct of simply not showering all that much.

Maybe it’s just the upcoming winter season that’s making me think this, but his hair reminds me of the Heat Meiser.

  4. Ha! Sparkles is funny.
He actually did cut his hair off once. He looked a lot better, too! What’s funny is that now it’s a “look” but it probably started off as total neglect. He probably hadn’t washed or cut it in 6 months.

  5. Since he’s got no talent to speak of, I’d say the hair is more like 90%. The face takes care of the other 10%.

  6. Man, aside from that last Vanity Fair cover or Harper Bazaar - I forget which, he always looks as if he needs to bathe in a tub of scented oils or something.

@Goddess, the fuss is only because he’s in a movie ( or series of movies) that have and will bring in big bank. Studio’s cream their panties over positive box office draw. Once this franchise of movies are finished, and if he can’t carry a movie on his own - the hoopla will die down. And no one will care about who he dates or what he’s doing. But at least he seems to know this unlike his fellow actress who takes herself way too serious.

  7. My goodness are all of you pathetic. He’s English and they are in general very sarcastic and unlike Americans joke about themselves without worrying what others think.
He is exeggarating about not washing his hair.
And when he says that the hair is 75% of his performance than because he is making fun of all the fuss that the media and fans have created about that.

You obviously have only seen Twilight if you judge his talent. But that only says something about your prejudgment.

He’s going to be here for a long time. Get used to it or ignore him and stop commenting if he bothers you so much.

    Otherwise you’re hypocrits.

I will always take this self-deprecating young Brit ahead of the conceited Hollywood actors who are more worried about their looks and how they are perceived by the public than being themselves.

  11. I think the hair is like…90% of his performance. Not that he’s given much to work with when it comes to the Twilight movies…

Watch his other films like “Little Ashes” or “How to Be” before passing judgment.

  14. He’s funny and modest. That’s why I like him and the accent alone makes him more adorable than any American actor.

  15. Robert is lovely. And his hair is a win.
To those of you who diss him: he doesn’t give a fvck what you think.

  16. Americans a very capable of joking about themselves and we enjoy the self-depricating quality of a lot of British humor. Rob is just in the unfortunate position of being put on an unreasonable pedestal and then experiencing the backlash that comes with it. It must be a tough position to be in.

  17. @an23tom
I have Little Ashes on my Netflix list. I’m willing to give him a chance, which is why I qualified my statement with the Twilight comment. It’s hard to imagine any actor being great with that sort of crap.

And no need to get mean or call names.

  20. I loved Twilight, but I will certainly admit it wasn’t exactly quality cinema. That being said, I’ve seen all three of them (Pattinson, Stewart, and Lautner) in other films where they demonstrated that they can, in fact, act well. I know it’s easy to hate on the tween drama but dismissing these actors because they were in the Twilight saga is just silly.
