Gwyneth Paltrow & Madonna are fighting (for relevance, perhaps?)

Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna have been friends for years. I’ve always doubted how close they really are, and if they’re the kind of friends that really lean on each other in times of hardship, and celebrate each other in times of triumph. I’ve always gotten the vibe that they’re more like “professional friends” – as in, they’re two women with high profiles who like to be seen with each other in public, like what the other brings to the table, press-wise and accomplishment-wise, and they like competing with each other.

There have been rumors of a rift between the two women before. Last year, there were reports that Madonna was pissed at Gwyneth after Dame Goop talked about Madge’s divorce to Guy Ritchie in the press. There was also some stuff about Gwyneth and Madge fighting over professional con artist/trainer Tracy Anderson, and whether they were going to be investing in Anderson’s gym chain. The most recent reports of a rift came from Gwyneth’s own Goop newsletter – several weeks ago, she devoted a newsletter to “friendship divorce,” asking: “What do you do when you realize that although you may have years of history, and found real value in each other in times past, that you kind of don’t like a friend anymore? That, after time spent with this person, you feel drained, empty, belittled or insulted. My father always used to tell me that, ‘you can’t make new old friends.’ How do you distinguish if someone in your life makes you change for the better or if you are better off without them?” Snap! Many theorized that Dame Goop and Lady Madge were on the outs, and Gwyneth wanted a “friend divorce”.

The latest report of their “chilly” relationship comes from this week’s In Touch Weekly. They claim the fight has something to do with a video…?

The relationship between Madonna and one-time best friend Gwyneth Paltrow has gotten pretty chilly, and according to an insider, neither seems ready to make the first move toward reconciliation.

“Madonna and Gwyneth are both Type-A personalities,” her pal says. “They had a silly argument weeks ago, and now they both seem to be holding a grudge.”

The squabble was over business: Madonna wanted Gwyneth to work on a video with her, and Gwyneth refused, says the pal, adding, “They were also working on a book together that went nowhere.”

You know what this sounds like to me? It sounds like their relationship has shifted, and Madonna needs Goopy a little more than Goopy needs Madge. Doesn’t it sound like that? Granted, Madge is still clinging to relevancy (sort of), and Madge still has a career as a pop icon, but what Madge really wants is relevancy. Relevancy in Hollywood, relevancy in music, et cetera. So she’s all, “Hey, Gwyneth, make this video with me, and we can write a book together, it will be awesome.” And Gwyneth is like, “Actually, I have a part in a real movie, sorry Madge.” And Madge was like, “Don’t you know who am I?!?”

All I can concentrate on are how low Goopy’s boobs appear in her jacket in the photo with her head down.

    Who cares if they’re fighting?

  2. Missmilly says:

Thank you for posting the picture to go with the story! I love it! They look like crap! No matter how rich you are –you can still look like just the rest of us when you wake up in the morning!! (I know, so not nice being so critical…but they are so in the limelite so I find it amusing)–If they would be like this more often (regular)and get off their chariots that are lifted by wings of angels I would like them more.

  3. Missmilly says:

wow, wait, I took a closer look at one of the pictures…madonna is holding 3 cell phones in her hand?????

  4. Tess says:

    @ cowbell,

yup, those little souffles have collapsed.

  5. Kittypants says:

What on earth is a Type-A personality? Does the ‘A’ stand for arrogant?

  6. EllenP says:

I wish one of those chicks would have the guts to get a decent dye job.

  7. original kate says:

their trainer friend looks like an oompa-loompa. wasn’t here was some scandal about her workout methods a while back? *sigh* i’m too lazy to look it up.

  8. Annie says:

So what’s with all the VadgeMadge hate CB? Madge is a pretty significant person in her own right. She was the first female recording artist who marketed herself multi-demenisionally. She is a Mogal the likes of MJ and The Stones.

Hate her destored body image and arrogance but to suggest she needs someone else, anyone else, to make her “significant” is really off base.

  9. Green Is Good says:

With all the money these ladies have, you would think they would get their ROOTS did!

  10. Sumodo1 says:

Goop’s father gave her good advice, but I think Madge oversteps a lot with her projects.

What Goop needs is a bounce from Iron Man 2 to get her into an Oscar-bound picture.

Madonna wouldn’t like that much. Maybe that’s the issue–Paltrow has a movie career. Madonna, not so much.

  11. ien says:

madonna does NOT need freaking gwyneth paltrow in order to stay “relevant”

    she’s madonna.

  12. Brooke says:

I doubt these two are fighting. Lainey had a good article about it lately and I agree that Gwyneth is excommunicating Kate Bosworth for hitting on/hooking up with her husband. She and Madge on one team cover all the bases of stardom pretty much; they’re too mutually useful for exposure purposes to have a little row and end it.

  13. Crash2GO2 says:

Goop is so tall. I am always reminded when I see these pics.

  14. Kim says:

I think yoou called it. Madonna is over. She isnt making any new albums and dating 20 yr olds has gotten old so i think she needs goopy for relevancy.

  15. jover says:

Missmilly the cellphones are for her other boy toys when she gets bored with the current one.

  16. Anti-icon says:

Both these “ladies” irritate the crap out of me. I’m old school, Madge’s age, and still long for the days that REAL MUSICIANS get to be relevant, because, they’re good. Madonna is a business person, NOT an artist or musician. Goop is just arrogant, and only mildly talented. The good ones never get a shot, or languish in nowhereland, which is probably preferable to the lives these two posers lead.

  17. demonterius says:

i everything want you see go to ready

  18. Tazina says:

Odd you would say Madonna is trying to cling to “relevance”. That is totally ridiculous. She is so beyond that it seems a really ludicrous, not to mention dumb statement to make. She is wildly successful and judging from the over 400 Million she raked in on her recent Sticky and Sweet tour (highest grossing tour by a solo artist), she indeed is still very much relevant. Nothing has changed for her. Of course some people are still jealous but I doubt she’s worried too much about that as it comes with the territory.

  19. andrea says:

these 2 deserve each other. altho i see goop as the bigger jackass of the two. in-freaking-sufferable. at least madonna puts her bitch right out there and owns it whilst goop tries to front like she’s all sweet. barf. i dont think madonna needs to “fight for relevancy”. she’s madonna. she’s already secured a place in pop culture history. she maybe is having a hard time figuring out how to be that and not be 18 anymore. she should call up tina turner for some advice. altho tina has way more natural talent.

  20. terry says:

I think she and madonna had a sexual fling when they were younger…

  21. Cinderella says:

Does Madonna ever keep female friends permanently?

  22. Tessa says:

I remember years ago, before their supposed friendship, when Madona sniped about how Paltrow breathed “rarified air”.

This was before she started speaking with an English accent.

  23. cara says:

I don’t like what either of them are wearing, escpecially madonna’s outfit. She looks like a skateboard dude

  24. chshc says:

    Flashback to the 90s

  25. a says:

    get gwyneth some new sunglasses

  26. jenny says:

umhh….these pics are really old!! ans since when is madonna irrelevant? She’s madonna!

  27. abbizmal says:

They’re still best friends, meaning they’re eachother’s best friend that they have. I would bet Madonna and Gwynneth don’t play well with others.

  28. Kelly says:

Hee hee, love Fishy’s glasses. If I was in the market for stuff that would make me look like a complete ladydouche fashion victim, that is.
My theory is that precious hoes like these two get on just fine as long as they have ‘separate spheres’ of interest, namely, M does music and G does fillums. I sense M is trying to get more into movies, trying to be a bit of a mover and shaker, wanting to write and produce etc, and this is pissing the G off because she’s considered this her own special hereditary sandbox. You know it had to piss M off when G tried to sing that time back in the 90’s. That would have been a secret bone of contention, to be sure.
Methinks also that nothing brings the bitch out like the looming career death staring both these pieces in the eye. They’re both on the greasy downhill and they’d have to know it.

  29. Mac says:

Everything I wanted to write, Anti-Icon wrote but more eloquently than I could.

  30. wasn’t it sharon stone that made the comment about paltrow breathing “rarefied air”?
