Michael Caine had a 1/2 brother in an asylum he didn’t know about for 50 years

This morning I had the pleasure of hearing Michael Caine interviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air. (You can listen to the interview and see highlights here. It first aired a couple of days ago so you may have already heard this.) What an incredibly interesting class act this guy is. Caine, 77, told too many excellent stories to recap them all, but there were two that really stuck out for me. One was the first piece of advice that John Wayne gave him, not to wear suede shoes as you can’t get pee out of them. (It makes sense, read it!) The other was the fact that he had an older 1/2 brother in an asylum that he didn’t find out about until after his mother’s death. Caine’s mother had visited her son at his mental home every Monday and never once let the family secret slip. Her husband never even knew. It sounds like such a mystery the way he tells it. Here’s some of what he said:

On first coming to Hollywood and meeting John Wayne
“It was quite weird. I came to do a picture with Shirley MacLaine and she wasn’t there. She was working on another picture and she was just finishing up. She couldn’t get there for two weeks. So until we officially had the party welcoming me to Hollywood, I was in this very luxurious suite in the Beverly Hills Hotel and no one talked to me. No one came. They just paid the bills and that was it. So I used to sit in the lobby looking for movie stars. [That's] where I met John Wayne for the first time and we became friends — not close friends, we hardly moved in the same circles, but we became very deep acquaintances. And he was very kind to me and gave me all sorts of advice like, ‘Talk low, talk slow and don’t say too much’ [and] ‘Don’t wear suede shoes.’ I said ‘Why can’t I wear suede shoes?’ and [John Wayne] said ‘You’ll be in the toilet, taking a pee and a guy will recognize you and he’ll turn and say ‘Michael Caine’ and he will have peed all over your shoes Michael.’ So I said ‘All right, I won’t wear suede shoes.’”

On finding out about his 1/2 brother
DAVIES: One of the interesting turns in your story is in 1991, when you learned that there was a half-brother that you’d never known about or known. Your parents were both dead at this point. How did you find out?

Mr. CAINE: My half-brother was in a mental institution. He was eight years older than me. Nobody – obviously, my mother knew, but nobody in my family had any inkling of this man. His name was David.

But the most extraordinary thing that we found out, when I found out about it -and oh, I’ll tell you first how I found out. A newspaper in England was doing an article, a series, on the state of mental health treatment in England.

And the reporter eventually rang me and told me that I had my half-brother, because I never knew him. My mother and father were dead. And the way he found out is he was in a hospital doing his thing, you know, his program about the state of mental health. And this girl, who was also a mental patient, came over and pointed at David and said: That is Michael Caine’s brother. And, of course, this reporter went: What? And he investigated it, and lo and behold, it was my half-brother.

And he rang me and said – and he was very nice. They didn’t make a big deal out of it, you know, sensationalism. He said: But he is your half-brother, he said, and the way we found out is that there is a picture of you with your mother just on the wall by his bed. And that’s the woman who comes and visits him. And then I talked to the matron, and then she’s told me the full story.

So I had this half-brother there, but the most extraordinary thing about it was that for 51, two or three years, my mother had visited him every Monday without fail, except for the five years of the war, when everyone was evacuated.

DAVIES: Now just to be clear, this was an illegitimate child that your mom had had…

Mr. CAINE: Illegitimate child that she’d had eight years before she had me, when she wasn’t married to my – my father was in the Indian Army. He was in the Royal Horse Artillery in India. And so he was away, and she’d had this illegitimate child.

What you did there, because of the shame, is you gave it to the Salvation Army. And he had epilepsy, and they’d obviously left him in a room with a very hard floor and no attention, and he’d battered himself into incoherence.

When I finally met him, he spoke, but I couldn’t understand what he said. And the only person who could understand was the matron, who had been with him the longest. And she translated. She was like an interpreter for me when we talked to each other.

And I obviously looked after him very well for the next two years, when he died years ago, years ago.

DAVIES: It’s remarkable that your mom made these visits and kept this secret.

Mr. CAINE: That’s what’s – yeah. That’s what’s incredible.

DAVIES: Took him sweets and the like.

Mr. CAINE: Yeah, I mean, my mother used to come to me on the weekends, you know, and on Monday, when she went back, you know, I’d give her all the rest of the box of chocolates, boxes of biscuits – you know, cookies as you call them in America and, you know, three-quarters of a cake, which we hadn’t eaten.

And for her, you know, and I had other family living in the house where she lived. And I would go up there and see her on a Wednesday and have a cup of tea, which is only two days later. And I’d tell her, I’d like a biscuit. And she’d say: I haven’t got one. Of course, she’d been taking them to David.

And I found out – I had a Rolls Royce and a chauffeur, the full – and my chauffeur, he said one day, he said: You do know, he said, whenever I take your mum home on a Monday, I never take her to the house. I said: Where do you drop her off? He said: I drop her off at a bus stop.

And I said: What did she say she’s going to do? He said: She’s going shopping. What she was absolutely going to do was take the food and the chocolates to David in the mental home.

The Oscar winning actor is promoting his new memoir, The Elephant to Hollywood. It’s out now and I’m surprised we haven’t heard more about it. Caine has been married to his second wife, Shakira Baksh, since 1973 and they have a daughter Natasha, 37. The first photo below is of him with his wife at Natasha’s wedding, which I think was 2 years ago. Caine has another grown daughter, Nikki, from his first marriage, and she’s also pictured below.

Sienna Miller & Rumor Willis win big at ShoWest Awards

showest awards 2 030409

The ShoWest Awards were handed out last night, and the list of winners is a little mind-boggling. Sienna Miller? Zac Efron? Rumor Willis? Since ShoWest is a convention of theatre owners, they tend to give out awards to actors who put people in the seats. Is that Sienna? I thought theatre owners would describe Sienna as “box office poison.” How interesting. Here’s a list of some of the big awards:

Independent Award for Excellence – Patricia Clarkson
Best Supporting Actress – Sienna Miller
Male Star of Tomorrow – Chris Pine
Director of the Year – Zac Snyder (Watchmen) & Michael Bay (Transformers)
Female Stars of Tomorrow – Rumor Willis and the cast of Sorority Row
Lifetime Achievement Award – Michael Caine
Comedy Star of the Year – Bradley Cooper
Male Star of the Year – Dennis Quaid
Female Star of the Year – Rachel McAdams
Breakthrough Star of the Year – Zac Effron

USA Today has a lengthy article about the awards, and they got quotes from many of the winners. I’m just going to hack this thing to pieces to get some of the best quotes:

For Zack Snyder, who received director of the year honors for Watchmen, the gala was a welcome respite from the stress of watching his film’s disappointing reception at the box office and with critics.

“I wish I had gotten this award before the movie came out,” he says. “Might have made things easier.” The $120 million film, which has grossed $105 million but is fading fast, has been seen as one of the year’s few box office flat-liners. But Snyder says he isn’t dwelling on ticket sales.

“Monsters vs. Aliens opens to $59 million and it’s a huge success,” he says. “We open to $55 million and it’s considered a flop. There’s no rhyme or reason to it.”

Michael Caine couldn’t agree more. The winner of the gala’s lifetime achievement award says it’s the 10th such trophy he has received for his 53-year career.

“I can’t tell if they just are appreciating my work, or asking me to retire,” he joked. “Either way, I’m not listening to them.”

Bradley Cooper, on the other hand, is all ears. The star of The Hangover, about four men who wake up after a night of debauchery, had the ShoWest crowd laughing — and gasping — after a scene in which an infant is conked on the head by a car door.

“I can’t wait to hear how people react,” says Cooper, winner of the comedy star of the year award. “There were times when we were making this movie and I was thinking, ‘There’s no way this is going to make it in the movie.’”

Sienna Miller [winner of the best supporting actress award, took a break] from her smaller-budgeted films to star in G.I. Joe.

“It was a strange experience,” she says of the commercial film, which includes myriad computer-generated effects she hasn’t yet seen. “I never had to duck in front of a green screen, pretending to dodge something that wasn’t there. But it is nice to get an award before the movie’s even out. I wonder if they’d do that with the Oscars. It takes the pressure off.”

Dennis Quaid, who narrates the upcoming animated sci-fi flick Battle for Terra3D and appears in G.I. Joe, collected the statuette for male star of the year.

“Isn’t this award for Innerspace?” he cracked. While Quaid’s movies have taken in a combined $1.3 billion at the box office, he hopes ShoWest’s attendees are prepared for the recession to hit Hollywood, even though the industry tends to flourish in economic downturns.

“What’s different this time around is the studios are owned by corporations,” he says. “And they’re already scaling back production. You can’t help but worry a bit, though I’m trying to stay positive.”

For Zac Efron, ShoWest’s breakthrough performer of the year, the only injury to worry about is at the box office.

“I really wanted to come here and meet the people who run the theaters,” says Efron, who next stars in the comedy 17 Again, opening April 17. “These are the people who really help decide how successful your career is.”

[From USA Today]

I’m ambivalent about most of these award-winners. Patricia Clarkson and Michael Caine are the obvious exceptions – those two should get every award, all of the time. And I do have some affection for Chris Pine, but it’s not like he’s Gerard Butler or anything. But Zac Efron, Sienna Miller and Rumor Willis? What a joke.

Michael Caine has never cheated on his wife of 35 years

wenn2176318
Michael Caine is such a sweet old guy. He recently sat down for an interview with The Daily Mirror, and he mostly talked about how much he loves his wife of 35 years, Shakira Caine. It’s actually Caine’s second marriage, but the way he talks about Shakira, it makes me a little swoony.

Micheal Caine is a two-time Oscar winner who has starred in films with some of the most beautiful and talented women in the world. He says that he enjoys working with these beautiful women, but that his greatest “temptation” was always at home – his wife. Shakira was a beauty queen and then a jewelry designer (before everyone was designing jewelry), but now she simply travels when Michael travels, and stays home when he’s home, so they can always be together. Here’s part of The Daily Mirror’s interview:

Since finding fame as a cocky womaniser in Alfie, Michael Caine has worked with some of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.

But he has only ever had eyes for one leading lady – his wife Shakira. For 35 years their marriage has been rock solid and they have been inseparable. Michael is justifiably proud that he has never strayed – despite temptation being constantly thrown in his path.

“I was always doing love scenes with very beautiful women,” says Michael, 75.

“You can go on the set and there’ll be one of the most beautiful women in the world and the director will say, ‘Take your clothes off and get into bed.’

“That could be a great temptation so I decided that I would never marry a woman who wasn’t as beautiful as the women I was working with. And I married a woman who, in actual fact, is more beautiful than most women I have worked with, so all the temptation was at home, not at work.”

With a throaty cackle, he adds: “So I rush home to get some temptation.”

Michael fell for Shakira, a former Miss Guyana, after spotting her in a Maxwell House ad. Intrigued, he got her number from a friend who worked in advertising. After several calls, she agreed to meet him.

Today they are as devoted as ever, happy to spend time together at their home, a 200-year-old converted barn in the Surrey countryside – their daughter, Natasha, 35, a model turned interior designer and property developer, long since flew the coop.

“I’m deliriously happy,” says Michael, whose first marriage to actress Patricia Haines ended in 1957. “I love the house. I’m very happy there and I’m a real family man. I just love to go home, no matter where I am, the most luxurious hotel suite in the world, I love to go home. People ask me, ‘Where do you go for your holidays?’ I say, ‘I go home.’”

“My wife comes with me on all the movies, but she is not an appendage to a film star or anything like that. She is a completely intertwined partner. She is the other half of me. Also, we’re still very much in love with each other. We always have been, we always will be.”

From The Daily Mirror

I’ve seen Shakira on Michael’s arm at various red carpets, and she is very stunning, and always dressed elegantly. She’s got a very regal, almost haughty look, but you can tell that they’re still really in love. The story of how they met is very sweet too – I wonder if she even knew who Michael Caine was when he called her up.

Castmates honor Heath Ledger at the New York Dark Knight premiere

The New York City premiere of The Dark Knight was held at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square theatre last night. The film has gotten tremendously good reviews (with the exception of New York Magazine) and many theaters have already sold out tickets for the July 18th opening.

Heath Ledger has gotten such amazing reviews for his performance. Although his untimely death obviously created a lot of press for the film – his last full role – I think he would have gotten nearly as much had that tragic accident not occurred. From the looks of it, he gives an out-of-this-world performance. And I think that’s a great legacy to leave behind – Heath isn’t getting all this attention just for something heartbreaking, but because of his amazing talent.

“Working with Heath was fantastic,” said Christian Bale, 34, who reprises his role as the Caped Crusader. “He steals the movie and I’m quite happy to say that. He’s a hell of a talent and created a joker that’s very iconic and one that will become a classic portrayal of the ages.”

Michael Caine, 75, who plays butler Alfred Pennyworth in the film, which opens July 18, noted the “intensity and ferocity of the performance.”

“But when we were sitting down between takes, he was completely ordinary,” Caine added. “He wasn’t preparing himself or saying ‘Please leave me alone, I’ve gotta do this.’ Instead he was talking to me.

“We would sit and chat and have a cup of coffee, then suddenly they’d say, ‘We’re ready, Heath,’ and he’d go straight into The Joker,” Caine continued. “His energy was astonishing, especially when it came from this kind of calm. He’s certainly the best villain I’ve ever seen.”

[From People]

I’ve noticed that Christian Bale always speaks about Heath Ledger in the present tense. He did the same thing in an interview on The Today Show yesterday morning.

Heath’s family attended the premiere, but very quietly. Heath’s father, mother, stepmother, and older sister all avoided the red carpet (which was actually black) and sneaked into the theater quietly to watch the film. Upon exiting, Heath’s father Kim gave a thumbs-up to the press, and said the movie was “very good.” By pretty much everyone’s account, The Dark Knight is great – and a true example of Heath Ledger’s immense talent and dedication.

Here are Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic; Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard; Michael Caine and Shakira Caine, Morgan Freeman, Lauren Conrad, Ed Westwick, Gary Oldman, Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann, Nestor Carbonell, Robert Buckley, Edie Falco, Ethan Hawke, Aaron Eckhart, Karina Smirnoff, Chin Han, and Blake Lively at the premiere last night in New York City.
