Jay Leno makes inappropriate pregnancy joke to Bristol Palin on the Tonight Show

Jay’s comment to Bristol is at about :20 in. This is the second part of her interview

Bristol Palin was a guest on The Tonight Show on Friday. She did a decent job and kind of rolled with it, but I still found her very bland. She’s 19 years old and doesn’t have a lot to say, nor does she seem comfortable with the media. That’s fine and a lot of people are like that, but the vast majority of them don’t pursue fame, either. Bristol told Jay that she learned that she was invited to be on Dancing With The Stars through a text message she received while working at her day job as an office manager at a dermatologists. The way she explained it was simple – she decided to follow up on it and here she is. There was no mention of whether it was hypocritical of her to be on the show when she previously blasted Levi for being “obsessed with the limelight.” The thing that stuck out for me in this interview, and you can read it below and watch above, is Jay’s really stupid inappropriate comment to Bristol about getting pregnant. It was uncalled for and didn’t make sense, as if he was waiting to make a bad pregnancy joke and then tried to shoehorn it in there.

On choosing to do DWTS
Some people are like ‘do you really want to be in the spotlight?’ but I’m having fun with it

On her breakup with Levi
I’m not disappointed, not heartbroken. I tried to make it work for my son. It didn’t work. I realized that we’re not meant to be. I’m just focused on being a good mom.

On how Levi has changed
The guy I fell in love with was a hardworking Alaskan man that didn’t want to wear straight-legged jeans and boots and um be chased by Radar and those kind of people. So, it’s a night and day difference and it’s sad to watch, but oh well.

On Levi’s run for mayor of Wasila
He needs to move to Wasila, to the city limits, and he’s got to get his GED.

On how Dancing with The Stars is hard work
Well, I expected it to be hard work, but I’m so uncoordinated, don’t have any rhythm so we’re starting from scratch.

Leno’s inappropriate comment that followed this statement
I think it was a wise choice to go on the show. I was going to say, that’s also how you get pregnant, but I’m not going to go there. I’m teasing, I’m teasing.

On whether she’s a diva
No. The only thing I’ve asked for is a velcro mic pack so I don’t have to wear it on my belt loop.

What the hell is Jay talking about “that’s also how you get pregnant“? What does that mean in response to a 19 year-old girl saying that she can’t dance? It’s so wildly off the mark that it just goes to show what this old dude is thinking about. The people in the audience groaned loudly at that one, and so they should have. Remember when Letterman made a dumb joke about Bristol getting knocked up at a Yankees game but was accidentally referring to Sarah’s youngest daughter, Willow? Sarah and her husband freaked out about that and said that Letterman was joking about statutory rape. Letterman then apologized and Sarah accepted, and the whole thing was blown out of proportion, in my opinion. Anyway is Palin going to call Leno on this? It was a dumb joke and one that she’ll probably let go. I bet she’s seething over it, though.

Jay’s show is not doing as well as hoped, but he’s still hanging in there for some reason. It’s not because he’s particularly funny or has strong interview skills that’s for sure.

Here’s the first part of Bristol’s interview:

LOL I still really like Jay. He makes stupid jokes but he and his late night colleagues all do. They can’t all be hits. Bristol should have kept her day job and she is right about Levi needing to get his GED. I mean didn’t they meet in high school? Why on earth doesn’t that kid have his high school diploma? I know the Hollywood thing is way more fun but he should at least have his GED.

  2. Bella Mosley says:

If Jay or anyone had made the same comment to anyone but Sarah Palin’s daughter it wouldn’t be thought inappropriate. Rhythm is a method used to prevent pregnancy so the lack of it would be just as he said.

  3. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL OMG Bella I am just now hearing about the rhythm method. Someone had told me about it I was like where the heck did you hear that dumb sh*t? Why would you increase the risk of getting pregnant? LOL Then I saw them mention it on TLC. Guess what show I was watching, “I didn’t know I was pregnant.” The couple had been using the rhythm method as a way of birth control. That is the stupidest sh*t I have ever heard of. I can’t believe people actually acknowledge it as a way to prevent pregnancy.

  4. WhoDat says:

Um….ladies, the rhythm method is used by many women as a form of birth control. It is highly unreliable, of course, but it works for many women whose menstrual cycle is pretty regular. And also for women who cant, dont or wont use external methods of birth control (the pill, iud, condoms, etc). When Bristol said she has ‘no rhythm’ and then jay made that lame joke, he was referring to the rhythm method – if its off, then you get pregnant. Duh.

  5. di butler says:

She did ok, not very relaxed in front of the camera. If she wants to keep being in the public eye, she needs to get with it. Jay’s jokes were creepy, and the making them dance part was just weird. Everyone looked miserable.

  6. Oi says:

He never ever would have said that to Jamie Lynn Spears. I am not a supporter, but I am really sick of the medias treatment of her and her family. If it were anyone else, it would be wrong. Why is it just ok to treat them like that? It only infuriates their supporters more, and makes the people laughing look bad. Leno is an idiot.

  7. Greg B. says:

I was more astonished that the comedian Louis C.K. was the first guest that night, and stayed for Bristol’s segment, given what he twittered about her mother a few days before:

    http://celebritytwitter.com/twitter/Louis-CK

  8. mln says:

Both of them are dunces. She shouldn’t be on TV if she doesn’t want to be made fun of especially since she has no charisma Jay’s dumb joke is fair play.

  9. aenflex says:

WTF was she on the show for? I thought he interviewed celebs? If this is the best he can get no wonder the ratings for the major demographic are plunging. I’ve never watched Leno and it’s clear I aint missing out.
@OI:6 – really? Was that a serious question? Why the media punishes these people? Am I the only person to whom that answer is painfully obvious?

  10. teehee says:

Some people will cuss out the rhythm method because of its low effectiveness (best used in combination with something non hormonal like spermicide) I personally prefer to cuss out birth control pills because of their extreme and serious destruction wrought on a womans body after years of intake– as well as on the environment. Maybe you dont see it today, but after a while, you’ll see what that pill does. I really wish they would hurry up and ocme up with better methods that MEN can use to prevent pregnancy, and stop jeopardizing and inconveniencing WOMEN ONLY… !! *sigh*

  11. Po says:

If the only reason people even remember her name is because she got pregnant while also being the vice presidential nominee’s daughter, then what else is going to keep her in the limelight but bad pregnancy jokes. I think the joke was kind of bland but I wouldn’t call it offensive to someone like her. She knows why she was invited on Dancing with the Stars, got the People magazine cover, and why anyone even remembers her name. This is not someone who got pregnant as a teen and then went on to accomplish something great that led to media attention. This is her job in the media. And for anyone who says she has other speaking points I would like you to tell me when she has gone to them.
The bottom line is, if her mother or anyone else is tired of her being made fun of because she got pregnant then go tell the kid to find another line of work.

  12. Jazz says:

Why is this twat still on TV??

Bristol Palin should get off it too.

  13. Trillion says:

She’s famous for being an unwed pregnant teen. (since our culture rewards bad decision making and general idiocy) She and her family decided to try to capitalize on it. All jokes are fair game. Is this not obvious?

  14. Majosha says:

Agree in full with Po and Trillion.

  15. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

@teehee, if you have minute, can you please tell us why the pill is destructive to our bodies? Or point us to a link? Thanks!

  16. gem says:

Why is she on the show?

She is 19, and the mother of a child, she is an adult

Any comments made 2 her are completely appropriate and she should be able 2 handle them herself

I would respect her more if she fell back and took the money, and raised her son as lowkey as she possibly could

I think if you put yourself out there you also put yourself out there for negative comments if i was being paid what she was 4 the miniscule things she does you can make any joke u want

  17. Bristol did a fine job during this appearance, and I will absolutely be cheering for her on Dancing with the Stars! Go Bristol!!!

  18. SallyJay says:

She looks really pretty here đŸ™‚

  19. Dhavy says:

    She is just like Levi-FAMEWHORES!

Just because her mama is a dumbass politician does not make her better than any other reality tv person so the treatment should be the same. She is another Kardashian or Housewife looking for a way to make a living on TV so I have neither pity nor respect towards this girl

Regardless of how dumb Leno is, I am glad he made the joke, besides; I do not see the point of having her there to begin with

  20. kelly y0 says:

i was about to say the same think @SallyJay. I tink people are being al ittle harsh on her. Yeah she is a little annoying with the preganacy thing, but otherwise harmless. I dont hate her and i amnot gonna bash her just because of her mom. I am basing it off her actions. IMO, she is nothing like Levi. HE needs to go away.

  21. Bodhi says:

    Ditto Trill!! Jeebus…

  22. BethL says:

I wonder if Bristol’s office has any openings. I’ve never heard of a job where employees can come and go as much as they want, weeks at a time. I’m even more baffled that she’s a manager. I wish more people would call her out on her hypocracy on Levi trying to be famous.

  23. xxodettexx says:

i agree with everyone pointing out that she put herself out there, for the lame one-liner late night jokes… i certainly wanted her to quietly disappear and be a mother and raise her kid… but she decided to capitalize on being a teen mom, the jokes come with the territory

and leno’s shtick is becoming tired, so whoever said he wouldnt have said that joke to spears: a) spears isnt on the tonight show or dancing with the stars [aka bristol put herself on blast] and regardless, b) u do know he would have used that lame preggers joke on any young teen mom celebrity that happened to guest… he’s a comedian and its his thing, easy-target lame jokes only he laughs at

  24. hellen says:

She is no more annoying than any reality show “star” and in face, much LESS annoying than most of them. And Jay is not and has never been funny in the least. Where’s Conan when we need him?

  25. mrut says:

Bristol’s famous for getting pregnant as an unwed teen, so what else is there to talk to her about? She admits that she’s no dancer.

  26. tango says:

Geez, she’s one of millions of teenaged girls to get pregnant. Also, at her age, being uncomfortable with the media is a given. Especially since it seems she’s held to a standard many others don’t care about just because of who her mother is. She gets pregnant, ohhhh scandal. The 16 year old pregnant with her second kid in the hood gets public sympathy, food stamps and tax payer subsidizing housing. Whereas Bristol took whatever money she made from her speeches and bought a townhouse for her and her son to live in. Wow, how selfish and fame seeking.

I think Bristol does whatever public thing she can such as speeches, DWTS, etc, to earn money to support her son. It’s not like Levi is going to be earning the big bucks being a high school drop out so it falls to Bristol. When she does a version of Seward Bay Shores or Real Alaska Road Rules or goes to Mexico for spring break and flashes her boobs, drinks till she pukes or sleeps with half the guys at her hotel, then I’ll think she’s a publicity whore and out of control.

As for the joke, big deal. Bristol needs to learn to deal with it or come back with some sort of zinger.

  27. MissVJJ says:

She’s pretty!!! Stop judging her for her decisions. Teenage pregnancies happen. At least she’s in the position where she can actually support and take care of the child!

  28. anonymous says:

Her mother Sarah Palin makes nasty comments about the president of the United States who the hell is Sarah Palin’s knocked up teen age daughter, a nobody who rides on her skanky mother’s name.

  29. BeeCee says:

    I like her hair…

  30. d says:

About the pill being destructive on women’s bodies and the environment::

It’s only speculative, but some studies SUGGEST that the estrogen excreted by women on the pill ends up affecting fish, in particular the birth rate of male fish.

For example: If you google the article title Birth control may be harming state’s salmon at the Seattle Post Intelligencer newspaper, the article goes into that a little bit. It’s a 2003 article though.

If you google the words estrogen in the water supply, you’ll find a bunch of articles.

IMO, though, there are so many other chemicals in the water supply that aren’t filtered out in waste treatment plants, that any number of factors could be affecting fertility. As with a lot of issues, my guess is always that it’s not just one thing that causes problems, it’s usually a bunch of little things that add up to a big problem, either separately, or in conjunction with each other (e.g., a single chemical may not be so problematic, but a bunch of chemical interacting with one another, and too much of them in the liver, may cause significant problems). I really recommend Science Daily dot com website for a good reading on the actual science of all this type of stuff.

  31. Girl says:

I say this as a supporter of Sarah Palin. The decision to go on DWTS is a bad one. Probably has nothing to do with SP herself, much like the bone-headed decision to get back with Levi. But it looks rather trashy especially if one has a problem with Levi’s famewhore-y ways.

Jay Leno is pathetic. He knows how horrible his show is doing and probably did it to create controversy. Especially after David Letterman’s tasteless comments. For the record if anyone had made a joke about any politicians underage daughter being statutorily raped in a public place I would have been outraged. It was up to him to know who the he’ll he was talking about. I would have felt the same if DL had said the same about one of Obama’s daughters. At least he apologized.

  32. The Truth Fairy says:

This chick is out there making money and being famous for getting pregnant as an unwed teen. She is the one milking this, so I say that all comments, jokes and questions are fair game.

  33. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

@d, wow, thank you so much for that! yeah, BPA is one other chemical that scares the crap outta me… Seems like I read the pill decreases the risk for several cancers and helps with stuff like endometriosis but can slightly raise the risk of breast cancer, just wondering if there’s anything new to know about re: human risk… thanks again.

  34. d says:

@ she-etc.: no worries. I just realized none of what I replied answered the question of why estrogen/the pill harms our bodies though too. but i don’t know, I’m not a doctor. I think the pill affects different women differently though. so at least you should try to be aware of your own body and how it reacts to things. I think the issues is still fertility for women — that it may affect fertility — …just do some research…

  35. Frenchie says:

Yes there is an homonal pollution, but not only from birth control, I’m thinking about BPA and Soja that you can find in food and that is used to feed the kettle… I have just heard a couple of days ago that girls now get there first periode as early as 8 or 9 year old (and it’s not only because of the good nutrition but because of the hormone pollution)… pretty scary

  36. ezra says:

You put yourself out there, you get set up. That’s the reality of being in the spot light.

  37. mimi says:

so if you are an unwed teen, you are now classified as a “star” by network t.v.

    really sad.

  38. GatsbyGal says:

Leno really is a creepy fuck. What an outrageously inappropriate joke. You’d never see Conan stooping to that level.

  39. original kate says:

bristol works in an office? what office job lets you leave for TV appearances, speeches, and dancing with the stars? like hell she works in an office. i’m sick of this little hillbilly and her incessant whining about how hard it is to be a single mom. like any other 19 year old single mother gets 30K for abstinence speeches. please.

  40. Trillion says:

#27: “She’s pretty!!! Stop judging her for her decisions.”
Wow. That’s really depressing that such a mindset actually exists.
Whatever crap decisions you make, girls, just stay pretty. It’ll all be ok.

  41. Sassy says:

I remember a vague story – something about a pot and a kettle?

According to Bristol, Levi is someone seeking fame, not the same person anymore and yet she’s doing a late-night talk show to discuss her appearance on DWTS. OK.

    Hypocrite much?

And while the joke was lame (Jay IS the joke. He sucks), Bristol is fair game now that she’s decided to seek fame. I got pregnant as a teen, too, but gosh, didn’t get my 15 minutes. Oh right – I was busy being a mom.

  42. chris says:

She looks very country, and not in a good way.

  43. Whatever says:

I love how she continues to call Levi a famewhore, which he is, but come on, how many television appearances, magazine interviews, speaking engagements, etc has she done?? Pot, meet kettle. Mama taught her well!

  44. canadianchick says:

Leno stumbles sometimes, but I like his show more than Letterman’s show b/c that Canadian band leader (forget his name) drives me up a wall with his attempts to be cool. Conan is clever and skewers people like the Palins just as harshly, but clearly this is a pro-Coco environment *dodges bullets*

  45. Cprincess says:

I’m with some of the other comments -exactly why is this unwed 19 year old who got knocked up still on the radar????
She is also apparently also economical with the truth just like her mother – what kind of job does she have that let’s her take off to give her ‘abstinence’ speeches and now going on DWTS-didn’t she trash Levi for going Hollywood?
At least he’s pretty upfront with what he wants-apparently Bristol is not going to be wearing revealing costumes either because “that’s who she is”- look dear- you’ve already taken your
clothes off so why all the “modesty ” all of a sudden?
I’m so tired of the whole bunch of them- when is it time for them to take their hillbilly asses back to Alaska and stay there?
The next thing we are going to be subjected to is Palin’s presidential run which although it will be mildly enjoyable to watch in a train wreck sort of way ( has Sarah Palin learnt where Afghanistan is yet?) I’m already over them all….

  46. rhythm method: vatican roulette. that is all.

  47. MaggieMay says:

The pill should never , ever be used by young women who also smoke. Smoking and the birth control pill together increase risk of death by embolism, stroke. Saw a fair number of teen girls in the ICU I worked in with stroke because of smoking while on the pill. The lowest dose BCP, coupled with NOT smoking. Smoking and oral contraceptives together= a very bad idea.

To keep young girls healthy, give them organic milk that is hormone free. The artificial hormones in the milk causes havoc on the body.

    Stay safe out there people.

  48. missmilly says:

I don’t like Jay anyway, he’s a sexist pig…really, over the years watching him and how he kind of talks down to some women and always interjects something sexual into women’s interviews. anyway, whatever, Bristol did good.

  49. marie says:

I like Jay Leno, it was just a joke..I don’t like Letterman, he is a nasty man. Bristol looks very pretty!!!

  50. Gigohead says:

I don’t think Bristol is going to be on the show long.

  51. Faye says:

It could be that she’s doing DWTS for fame-whoreish purposes or because she thought it would be fun and an opportunity that doesn’t come around all the time. And if she is a fame-whore (which I’m not ruling out) she is the least annoying one out of the Tila Tequilas, Speidis, Lohans, etc etc. At least to me. A celeb? No. A ex-candidate’s daughter whose pregnancy was shoved down our throats? Yes.

Anyway, I hope she just has fun doing the show and doesn’t end up doing the fame-whore thing.

  52. judy says:

Oh for cripes sakes, this is no vestile virgin. SHe has been having sex for how long? She was shacking up with Levi in her parents home for cripes sakes. People asct like she is some kind of vigin birth. She was screwing her boyfriend and probably not her first bf either. This kid has been around so trying to make people look like they are making off color jokes to some 12 yr old is bullshit. sHE is no ones role model and lest of a kids role model. I am sick ofm people trying to put a halo around her head. She is nothing more and nothing less then a kid who was having sex and got caught,so quit making her out a saint.

  53. Jenny says:

Didn’t watch it, but anyone who drags a Palin through the mud into which it should return is a winner in my book.
