The Cambridges are trying to distance themselves from the Tatler cover story

68th Annual CFF - 'Irrational Man' - Premiere

In 2018, Richard Dennen became the editor-in-chief of Tatler. Dennen was close to then-Kate Middleton at St. Andrews, and he has seemingly maintained that friendship for two decades. I really and truly believe that Dennen likely okayed the new Tatler cover story which is currently blowing up in everyone’s faces. I maintain that it started out as yet another Embiggening Kate project, simply because most of the quotes are variations on things we’ve already heard from “unnamed sources” or “palace sources” over the past few years. That Kate never puts a foot wrong, that she’s controlled and controlling, that Carole stage-manages her life.

So why did the piece end up so shady? My theory is that the Cambridges and their “friends” all think they’re PR geniuses and they’ve shown time and time again that they’re not, actually. William and Kate think that because they successfully bullied the Sussexes out of the country, everyone in Britain will be forced into buying whatever the Cambridges are selling. Now that everything has blown up, the Cambridges can’t distance themselves far enough:

LOL. It’s gotten so bad that now Keen defenders are claiming the Tatler piece was all some kind of hit job from Meghan! Remember when Prince William ran to Richard Kay to cry that Meghan was to blame for the story about his affair with Rose Hanbury? That’s what this is again. The Cambridges f–k up, they badly miscalculate something and then they blame the Sussexes.

I also wanted to point out something else Tatler had – the cover story was full of hilarious quotes about how much Kate works and how upset she is that Harry & Meghan have left her to pick up the diamond-encrusted shards of royal duty. Quotes like “Kate is furious about the larger workload. Of course she’s smiling and dressing appropriately but she doesn’t want this. She feels exhausted and trapped. She’s working as hard as a top CEO, who has to be wheeled out all the time, without the benefits of boundaries and plenty of holidays.” And sources arguing that Kate’s “perilously thin” figure happened because she’s a “multitasking mother of three – one countenancing the additional worries of defending a Royal Family seemingly under siege.” Or how about this? “Meghan and Harry have been so selfish. William and Catherine really wanted to be hands-on parents and the Sussexes have effectively thrown their three children under a bus. There goes their morning school runs as the responsibilities on them now are enormous.”

I repeated those quotes from the cover story because Tatler did a “Kate by the numbers” piece and I found two of the numbers fascinating: Kate has 21 patronages and she’s done 1,201 royal engagements since her wedding. Nine years of marriage and she only has 21 patronages? Does that figure count The Art Room, which had to close this year because of lack of funding because their royal patron is so lazy? And I’m sorry, but 1200 engagements in nine years is flat-out pathetic, especially when you consider what “counts” for Kate’s engagement numbers. She counts “private meetings,” “private parties,” “Zoom calls” and “walking on a tarmac” as engagements and she still only averages out to 130 events a year.

Update: HOLY CRAP. A Tatler spokesperson spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the Kensington Palace denial and said: “Tatler’s Editor-in-Chief Richard Dennen stands behind the reporting of Anna Pasternak and her sources. Kensington Palace knew we were running the ‘Catherine the Great’ cover months ago and we asked them to work together on it. The fact they are denying they ever knew is categorically false.” Oh my god, the drama!!

😂😂😂😂 this is getting very interesting. I have my popcorn out, my coke out the fridge and I’m gonna seat back and enjoy this train wreck of a show. I’m sure the Sussexes feel the same way.

    • Becks1 says:

YUP. Like Kaiser said in the other post…I’m so glad Tatler released this story now. This is the drama and gossip we’ve been missing.

      • Silas says:

This is the old school snark that was fun. It’s about puncturing hubris and revisionism.

The harassment of Meghan because a biracial woman dared to marry a white prince was heartbreaking.

      • Becks1 says:

Exactly Silas. This is a good old fashioned gossip story in all aspects – the article, the reaction from KP, the reaction from Tatler.

The smear campaign against Meghan was sad and very different from this.

      • L84Tea says:

This gossip is a thing of beauty! (raising my glass)

      • Silas says:

Lol. Let us thank Kate and William for this gift.

      • BayTampaBay says:

“reporting of Anna Pasternak and her sources.”

Anna Pasternak has excellent sources within the London Set, the Polo Set and the Turnip Toff set. If she wrote this article then I believe 99 of every 100 words.

      • MsIam says:

@btb is Anna Pasternak the one who wrote that article trashing Meghan and Harry and comparing Harry to the Duke of Windsor? If so then she is no fan of the Sussexes for sure. Looks like she is not a Cambridge fan either.

      • Nic919 says:

My theory is that the turnip toff set were the ones who provided the pointed comments about Kate and the Middletons which is what has KP upset. Does Anna P know Rose? Maybe there is a little vengeance for the church wAll that happened over New Years.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@MsIam – I never said Anna Pasternak was a fan of Meghan Markle. It is possible to dislike both Meghan & Unable. Anna Pasternak did not like Diana either.

The trash story she wrote on Harry & Meghan was her own opinion. The story she wrote on the Cambridges and the book she wrote on James Hewitt was researched and sourced. Anna Pasternak is well connected. Being well connected does not make you a good person.

      • morrigan01 says:

Let’s be clear: that Turnip Toff set have never like Kate or really been her friends. They’ve always looked down on Kate as a social climber – that whole “wisteria sisters” nickname she and Pippa got from them and such. Meghan just got MORE snide comments the past 2-3 years because they clearly looked down their noses MORE at a black-biracial American daring to marry a Prince than they did the girl descended from Coal Miners during Meghan’s time there.

And Kate likely helped embiggen that hate towards Meghan within that set, helped it along, because she was so threatened by Meghan. So, you know, with the toffs it was likely “enemy of my enemy is my friend” and all of that with Kate at the time.

But Kate, and her mom too probably, forgot that just because Meghan was the current target that didn’t mean that set liked or respected her in any way now. And if the Rose thing is true (and I tend to think it is), well. Even if William never divorces Kate, just the fact alone that William ain’t faithful to her likely signals that set that they don’t have to respect Kate or pretend to like her or anything like that. Hell, Rose showing up at that Christmas church thing was likely a signal to that effect. Kate may get that Queen Crown sometime in the future, but that doesn’t mean she’ll really have any real power among that group when she does.

I think this whole Tatler article thing was done by Kate and Ma Middleton to try and shore up Kate’s “power” and “standing” among those posh sets, with the continued uniting of throwing racist/sexist/xenophobic slurs at Meghan as a common goal. But it’s now backfiring. Meghan isn’t there anymore, and while that set may hate her still, she’s no longer “in their backyard” anymore, as it were. Whereas Kate still is.

    • leftcoastal says:

Roosters are a’comin’ home to roost, bitches. Did the Cambridges really think they were safe from the rags after their human shields peaced out? And I agree with a previous commenter — Kensington is PANICKING. Too bad they couldn’t issue a similar rebuke about the “swathes of inaccuracies” in the absolute FLOOD of lies about Meghan and Harry.

      • Tosca says:

@leftcoastal Exactly. They are now defending the Cambridges but never defended the Sussexes?

    • Des says:

Tatler missed the memo and just went full throttle lmao

    • bamaborn says:

Babsorig…OMG!! Try not to be petty like me with my buttered popcorn. Many have predicted the sh*t would hit the fan once Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan left. Didn’t expect it this soon.

  2. runcmc says:

I am not a Kate fan but let’s be fair- she did have three pregnancies and the subsequent super-long European maternity leaves in that time. On top of that, I kinda wish we’d focus on criticizing William- it’s widely reported that he doesn’t want to be shown up by Kate so even if she wanted to work more (I doubt she does), she wouldn’t be allowed to because her husband is an insecure baby.

    • Jess says:

being fair was thrown out of a window when they decided to throw H&M under the bus. Did they give excuses when Meghan was pregnant? No. If anything, they doubled down on attacking her. I’m not going to coddle this woman.

      • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

Exactly. So many of us made excuses for her for a long time, and then she showed us who she really was. Unmistakably.

    • Tessa says:

She did not work much before the pregnancies. The spin was that the near 30 year old had to be “eased in” to royal work. She’s no better than WIlliam. I think so many excuses have been made for having low work numbers. I don’t think William is preventing her from working. Before it was the Queen, then it was Charles then it was Meghan. It is Kate and only Kate who does not like work. It is evident in her single years she had no full time work and she rarely showed up at Jigsaw.

      • Sara says:

@ Tessa – I’m sitting here comparing/contrasting this to the other heavily covered story on CB right now: Mary Kate Olsen and the narrative that her husband didn’t want her to work so much. Mary Kate has been working since she was a baby. She’s known nothing BUT work her entire life. Of course she’s not going to just drop everything – it’s what she knows.

Kate Middleton has never ever been in the work force. She knows nothing but being lazy and paid for her whole life: first by her parents and now by her husband’s family. Of course she’s not going to pick up the ball and work full time. It’s what she knows. (Photographing her parents’ paper plates that they sell doesn’t count. And something something working part- time in fashion for about ten minutes before William got bored and came back to her. )

    • Silas says:

Yeah, but she married that insecure baby. I think Kate picks her battles and working more isn’t one of them.

There’s also the -landmark survey- which was nothing of the kind. That’s all Kate having empty boasts put out there about herself. She could have handled the whole thing going back to fall 2018 properly but didn’t. Her work ethic really is terrible.

I thought she was spoiled but harmless until stuff like the budget plane stunt. She added to the harassment to boost herself.

    • Becks1 says:

Kate does not want to work more. Full stop. We’re not saying Kate should have done 500 engagements the year George was born. We’re saying Kate could do at LEAST 150 – 200 engagements a year, considering what she counts as engagements. She counts private meetings with Jason Knauf (the kind of thing you would expect her to be doing on a regular basis) as “work events” – meanwhile Meghan guest edited vogue, curated the smart set, etc and very few of those meetings showed up on the court circular. We only know because we saw pictures way after the fact.

    • Eleonor says:

I think this is the Royal way: throwing women under the bus.
The tabloids build the story Kate vs Meghan when the feud was between the two brothers.

      • Tessa says:

Kate did not have to aid and abet the PR commercial jet spin and she did and even the children were dragged into it. She also could have denied the “crying” story.

      • Tosca says:

        @eleonor That’s a very interesting point

    • Lise says:

Ummm she took off 6 weeks with George, 4 months with Charlotte, and 6 months with Louis. Even being generous, all together that represents only ONE year in a NINE year career.

      https://ca.hellomagazine.com/royalty/2018091462328/kate-middleton-maternity-leave-prince-louis-george-charlotte/

      • Tessa says:

But in those 9 years her work numbers were still low. ANd what was she taking the leave from? She did not work that much anyway and there are the vacation times that need to be factored in.

      • leftcoastal says:

@lise a nine year “career”? Doing what? Dressing up and shaking hands for an hour or two every couple of weeks? My god, how EVER did she cope?? Kate hasn’t a worked a real day of work in her entire LIFE. And let’s not forget the FULL-TIME PROFESSIONAL NANNY they have on staff.

      • Becks1 says:

I think @Lise is saying that EVEN accounting for her pregnancies and maternity leaves, she still barely worked. If you figure she took a year off, total, for each baby, and then maybe another 6 months total for her HG in the beginning of pregnancies, then you have 18 months off, so then you have the other 7.5 years to account for, and her numbers are STILL dismal.

      • Becks1 says:

To clarify I mean she took a year off total for babies if you group her mat leaves together. I worded that weirdly lol.

      • calibration says:

she also had that Hyperemesis Gravidarum so that took months out of each pregnancy, if she really had it. She always seemed to come good third trimester but I don’t know enough about that to know if that’s how it works with HG.

TBH my morning sickness was so bad, i couldn’t have even shown my face I was so sick while pregnant. Took a bowl with me everywhere.

    • notasugarhere says:

Nothing stopped Kate from working before marriage, nothing stop her if she wanted to be spot-on professional in her handful of engagements. Fact is she cares even less about royal work and duty than her ManChild husband.

      • MsIam says:

Kate’s here for the clothes and jewelry, lol.

      • notasugarhere says:

        And status, never forget status.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

Kate has always been allergic to working. She worked because ahe had to and even then it was minimal. She worked for her mother’s business and at one point (when she and Will were living together) even TQ had a talk with William and told him his girlfriend needed to get a job. The chick has ALWAYS been lazy and has always seen being with William as a get out of jail card for having to do so.

    • Nic919 says:

Sophie has always had higher numbers and she almost died giving birth to Louise. The 1201 quoted in Tatler doesn’t even match the 900 or so counted by that guy who provides the year end numbers using Court Circular information. In the 9 years since marriage, Kate only has three years where she went above 100. Her highest year she ever had was 144. And it wasn’t last year. Plus add in the fact that meetings with Jason count as engagements, we don’t have much of anything here. All other royal women have worked more than Kate, she’s just the only one who has the PR to cover for her.

  3. Eleonor says:

    Finally some fun gossip!

  4. Jess says:

they really thought they were doing something with this story LMAO

this is the sweet karma I’ve been waiting for.

  5. Silas says:

Something happened and the story went from a puff piece to mentioning Rose and sneering at Kate.

I believe the Cambridges are furious Harry left and feel entitled to his support while hanging him out to dry. That part is true. Then we have the usual touchpoints: unity and support of the Middletons, William liking them, Kate wanting to be seen as steady and and hardworking and hands on with her kids, but the social climbing, entitlement and laziness wasn’t glossed over.

  6. Nahema says:

I hate when the Royals numbers come out because it’s a constant reminder of how little they do for they huge amount of privilege they receive. These events aren’t even days worked. Some of them will literally be a couple of hours.

Kates figures are appalling. It would be better if she just admitted she preferred doing the stay-at-home mum thing, rather than going on about how much work she’s having to do because at this point it’s just a blatant lie.

I know I’m going to get hate for saying this but I’m used to it. What if it was the Sussex’s behind the article? I’m not saying Meghan specifically but both of them? I still lean more towards it being Rose but I’m not counting out The Sussex’s. Either way it was an act of revenge. I really don’t think this was a Cambridge set up that backfired. They’re lazy but they’re not that stupid.

    • Tessa says:

I don’t think it’s the Sussexes. They are not the villains–Kate and William did stupid things IMO. William is totally clueless and believes his own publicity as does Kate, on blogs they have followers that wildly flatter them.Kate can’t be a stay at home mom. SHe’s signed up to do work as a senior royal. And even “stay at home moms” DO get out of the house even if they don’t have jobs, pursuing hobbies, charities, interests. And two of the Cambridge children are in school now.

    • JT says:

The editor of the Tatler plainly stated that they had the cooperation of Kensington Palace to write this story. KP knew about this story months ago. How is there any confusion as to whether Harry and Meghan were involved in this? They were not. Why is nothing ever the Cambridge’s fault? Its clear what their intentions were.

      • Other Sofia says:

No the editor said that Kensington Palace knew that Tatler was working on a story, very different from cooperating. I don’t think Cambridges were involved in this story, why would they, it makes them look super bad, both the „exhausted CEO“ thing and the tights story. Of course absolutely possible that a lot of this is truly how they feel, and sources said so. I can totally imagine them hearing that there will be a Great Catherine Story and being happy about that, but why would they say things to reporters that make them look so bad or have their friends say it. I rather think sources close to them thought it would be good Gossip.

      • Geraldine Granger says:

Or maybe they don’t realize how they sound. Like Kate trying to dictate what people wear to another couple’s wedding. They think they sound great, protocol, all the other BS, but in reality, she sounds like a reverse bridezilla. So it backfires and they can’t understand why. So again, they are the victims (in their own minds).

    • Sofia says:

“It would be better if she just admitted she preferred doing the stay-at-home mum thing” Except she can’t do that because her lifestyle is heavily subsidised by the taxpayers. That’s like asking your boss to keep paying you after you’ve quit your job.

Now she could do what the Sussexes did and refuse taxpayer funding. But she can’t because Meghan is married to the 6th in line so it’s easier to “get out” because Harry’s never going to be King at this point. The only way Kate can “stop” doing royal duties if a) she has a deathly illness which stops her from working or b) her and William divorce.

As for the Sussexes leaking it, please just stop. Why would the Sussexes leak an article to Tatler when they could go to People or E! News or something. And why would they leak an article where they are called selfish, are accused of chucking 3 innocent kids under the bus and are basically blamed for all of Kate’s problems recently?

      • MsIam says:

Why would they leak to Tatler or any other tabloid period when they can leak all of that to Omid for his book? And feel they will have potentially more control over the narrative? They don’t need some snobby mag to get any dirt out, lol.

      • morrigan01 says:

Seriously, the idea that the Sussexs would leak to the Tatler is so nonsensical. Harry and Meghan live in *Los Angeles* now. Do some people just not GET the global-reach media we have here? Why the HECK would they leak to a UK-based tabloid mag, when they do it much more easily to a US-based one, especially given that the time-zone difference would mean they’d at least have a 10-hour lead time with any story they leaked before KP or anyone else in the RF could have time to comment about it. Plus, as said, there is also Omid and his book about them coming. Why not leak to HIM is they wanted to actually leak something?

Harry and Meghan don’t need some mag that compelty focused on the UK social turnip toff set and other aristos to get stuff out if they wanted to.

    • Priscila Bezerra-Fischer says:

I dont hate you for saying this, but I do find strange, at this point, to even contemplate as a possibility.

Meghan and Harry are suing the ROTA. They released a statement about NOT dealing with them or through them…

So, you see, your possibility is not even possible, for legal reasons. They would not endanger their lawsuit just to have a piece written that actually calls them ” selfish” and capable of throwing children under a bus!

Of course, the accusations are so over the top villanesque that I can see this rumour emerging, but please, this is too much!

      • Silas says:

We can see by what has happened with Tatler that they would be outed.

I read someone’s batsh*t theory that Meghan and Harry leaked to Dan Wooten about Harry. Ma’am, they are suing the Sun. Dan is not doing them a huge favor and keeping secrets for them.

      • Nahema says:

You have a point about the law suit and I didn’t consider that. You’re probably right that it’s not them. I’m sticking with my Rose theory then.

      • BabsORIG says:

Huh? You are confusing @Nahema!! So you considered none of the facts re: the Sussexes but just came out here parroting every daily fail commentariat talking points accusing and blaming Meghan of planting this story to smear the put no feet wrong Cambridges just because…..why exactly? SMH, very interesting…not. LOL at yr conveniently now “sticking with my turnip toffs theory” you so transparent. And I didn’t miss your “not Meghan only but both of them”. You thought you were being smart, throwing Harry in the mix to disguise, right? I wasn’t fooled, this Kate/Cambridge stans blaming Meghan for everything stops right now.

      • Steph says:

This publication is part of the ROTA? By a parent company?

      • BayTampaBay says:

Tatler is owned by Conde Nast.

    • Em says:

Are you ok? The same article that insults Harry and Meghan and the Meghan that called Meghan a social climber is what you’re saying they had a hand in? That article insults Harry and Meghan. Why would they commission a piece praising Kate and insulting them? What’s to gain?

    • taylor says:

respectfully, the idea that the sussexes would be in cahoots with the tatler (of all publications) to snarkily embiggen kate is pretty nonsensical. 1) it’s inconsistent with their previous approaches to pr (even the people mag story never mentions w&k) 2) the tatler have been pretty awful to meghan and the sussexes are trashed several times in this piece 3) what would they possible gain from this (especially since finding freedom is coming this summer) and 4) the tatler literally confirms that they worked with kp.

      sincerely, what is your logic?

      • 809Matriarch says:

This is true! Wasn’t it Tatler that last year gave Meghan the dubious title of the Social Climber of the year? No way the would use that snobby gossip rag.

    • GuestWho says:

If it was the Sussexes (which is totally not their style – they nor their acquaintances have NEVER gone after the RF), they would not have gone to a rag that had been disparaging them for years. If they wanted to burn it all down, they would have gone bigger than some niche rag in the UK.

I think you can count H&M out of your revenge story.

    • Yoyo says:

Sure blame Meghan for a story that had approval from KP, until they tear back the mask from unable.
And yes they’re that stupid, example the plane stunt.

    • BabsORIG says:

Ha, Nahema sorry but you so full of it. So the Sussexes are responsible for this Cambridge bashing piece that came from a Cambridges friend and approved by KP because……why? Interesting that I have NEVER seen you attribute ANY Sussexes bashing story as coming from the Cambridges!!! Typical, white woman cries its all “the biracial woman’s fault” but when the biracial woman cries its all “oh that biracial woman is such a difficult drama queen diva” RME, miss me with that madness.

      • Olenna says:

Thank you, Babs. The OP is full of something, always with the low key mugxit talking points.

      • Bohemian Angel says:

        @Babs @Olenna 👏👏👏
Thank you, the OP is bordering on trolling now! Always bring snark about the Sussexes to the table!

    • MsIam says:

I had no idea that the Keen apologists arms could reach all the way to America, lol! Let’s face it, it looks like there are quite a few folks in the good old U.K. that are not impressed with the FFK and FFQ. I think rather than looking all the way in California, you might want to look over at Clarence House for answers. Somebody feels that Kate and the Middletons and even William need to be put in their place.

      • Juniper says:

Oh they have their secret facebook and tumblr groups. Many are Trump loving Karens who wish the US was still under the monarchy. They love to seek out groups that might have a more sympathetic tone and infiltrate. They’re constantly getting shut down because of their racism and dog whistling.

    • Natalee says:

The only people “behind” the article are the middletons and their friends. They thought it would make Kate sympathetic and backfired spectacularly.

      • TheOriginalMia says:

Exactly, @Nathalee. William & Carole think they are PR geniuses. They thought they could embiggen Kate on Meghan’s back. Well Meghan & Harry are gone. There’s a void. And lazy Kate is primed for a take down.

    • Jumpingthesnark says:

Nahema, the Sussexes weren’t involved. And it isn’t hate, just the facts. Will and Kate didn’t like how it went over and were tying to blame Tatler for it. Tatler then made it very clear that KP had Cooperated with andendorsed the story.
And Tatler is a very Will and Kate friendly publication, the editor is a school friend of Kate. They wrote some nasty racist hit pieces on Megan. I don’t see the Sussexes going to a publication that did that to Megan.
For Tatler to stand up and contradict Will and Kate like that, I mean, game on!

      • BayTampaBay says:

“And Tatler is a very Will and Kate friendly publication, the editor is a school friend of Kate.”

So very true BUT Tatler like all print publications (Vanity Fair, GQ, Daily Fail,..etc…) are losing print readership and therefore high end print advertising euros, dollars & BPS. Tatler is interested in Tatler and will run whatever stories with whatever slant its readership is willing to pay for via BUYING a print magazine.

      • Harper says:

I’d run out and buy a copy of this issue of Tatler just for this article if there was a bookstore near me that carries the magazine that was actually open for business. It’s so funny I want my own printed copy of it. So good one, Tatler!

    • Nelly says:

No, this is not the Sussexes. Tatler has put out hit piece after hit piece on Meghan and the writer of this latest fawning Kate piece is one of the worst Meghan critics. The Sussexes do not have many if any defenders in the royal correspondents or clout chasers. The Sussexes are minding their own business. Let the Cambridges self destruct in their sychophantic bubble.

    • Becca R says:

Let me disabuse you of the notion Harry & Meghan are somehow behind Kate’s friend and an author who has made it known how much she hates Meghan publishing this article.

Anna Pasternak strongly dislikes Meghan. She was on a morning show (I believe it was the BBC) in January discussing them stepping down, and labeled Meghan everything but a child of God. She’s been mad about Meghan marrying in since day one. She has never hidden just how much she despises Meghan because despite being a divorced, biracial American, Meghan was given all that was denied to Wallis Simpson. She wrote an entire book basically framing Wallis as a tragic, misunderstood victim of a needy, entitled man.

Richard Dennen has greenlit numerous hate pieces about Meghan, called her a gold-digging social climber who doesn’t know her place and discussed at length how Meghan doesn’t have proper manners when attending a dinner bc she allegedly wanted to sit next to Harry.

The fact you’re trying to lay this at Harry & Meghan’s feet because this fluff piece backfired, and it definitely was intended to be a fluff piece just based on Pasternak’s involvement, is so telling though.

The Sussexes would work with the magazine that called Meghan the biggest social climber and has written sneering hit piece after hit piece on her? About as plausible as the accusations that the Sussexes would work with the Daily Mail when they release less than flattering Cambridge stories.. you know; the paper they are suing.

The Sussexes have never released anti-Camb stories or trashed them, that’s not their style. When Meghan’s friends have supported her, they’ve never mentioned any royals. Unlike the rest of that terrible royal family, they’re capable of defending themselves without bringing others down.

That plus the fact that the Tatler article trashes Meghan… make it make sense

    • Nyro says:

Meghan is in LA minding her business. I swear to god, y’all blame black people for every damn thing. Jesus! Kate spit in the air like the dumbass that she is and it landed back in her face. That’s what happened.

    • Pearl Grey says:

This Tatler piece is pure Middleton, and yes, that includes Kate.

After months and months and months of sickly sweet, awe-inspiring weekly puff pieces on the Cambridges, their perfect family, their perfect marriage, their perfect engagements, their readiness to be King and Queen and all-important status as Future Of The Crown™ and Saviours Of The Monarchy™, Carole Jenner and Kate know that even with the press providing them with a cover up, people aren’t stupid, they are slowly starting to wake up to the fact that these glowing 5 star reviews are coming from them. Add to that the immeasurable amount of automatic good PR and protection they (and the rest of the Royal family) have benefited from off of Meghan’s back after 3 years of almost daily press and online attacks of the Sussexes, and they (and again, the rest of the Royal family) have become very, very comfortable. And with comfort, comes boldness and with that, comes stupidity.

They knew that yet another “All Hail the Benevolent Cambridges” embiggening story in one of their favourite mouth-piece publications would start to arouse suspicion, so they added in a few red herrings, hoping to throw people off the scent whilst planting the seeds that this may have come from Meghan. Killing two birds with one stone.

What makes it obvious is that the so-called “negative” parts of the article that appear to throw snark at Kate and the Middletons don’t actually have much impact at all. Carole being “the mastermind” behind Kate and Pippa and their social climbing ways is old news, and after both women have long since married and produced children with wealthy men of high status, their goal has been achieved, so they don’t care at this point what people think about it. They never did care if anyone thought they were social climbers because they had their eyes on the prize. It’s already been talked about to death and moved on from. Kate being described as having a “ruthless survival streak” can appear like a negative at first, but can also be interpreted as her being an innocent victim (of press “bullying” and the “feud” with Meghan who “made her cry”) and therefore understandably had to develop an armour to “survive”. Pippa “talking like the Queen” is yet another red herring designed to look like shade but falls flat due to the simple fact that absolutely nobody cares about what Pippa is doing. The only truly negative part of the article that cannot be interpreted as anything other than a direct hit is aimed at the Sussexes. So many nasty things about them and their decision to leave have been said already, but that their actions are harming the Cambridge children is a new angle we haven’t heard before. This would never come from them as they have nothing to gain from painting themselves as cruel and inconsiderate of innocent children. Only the Cambridges will benefit from claiming that their ability to care for their kids has been ruined by the “selfish Sussexes”, and they have shown they are no strangers to using their children to further their agenda. The fact that the Sussexes are currently putting so much on the line to fight against press lies is yet more proof that they are not behind this piece.

The Middleton clan and the royals should have just stuck to their tried and true methods. They have been getting away with it for so long that they thought they were untouchable and tripped themselves up. Trying to serve their sugar water with a few well-placed teaspoons of vinegar seemed like a good idea, but has backfired on them in a way they clearly weren’t expecting.

      • Amy Too says:

Pearl Grey, “With that comfort comes boldness.” I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this line, but I interpret it differently. I don’t think will and Kate and Carole purposely tried to add some vinegar to the sugar to throw people off and think the piece might’ve come from the Sussexes. I think that Will and Kate, KP, and the Middletons have gotten so used to riding into greatness on the coattails of Meghan-hate pieces, that they’ve become lazier and bolder in how they do their own PR.

I said yesterday that all of these quotes sound like the actual thoughts of Will and Kate and Carole but they just weren’t filtered for the masses. These are the quotes from super out of touch, overly privileged Will and Kate and Carole who honestly believe that they’re working SUPER HARD, and who really do tell people that the Sussexes threw the Cambridge children under the bus bc Kate can’t personally do every school run anymore (she thinks… because no one is going to school right now anyways).

Usually, they would probably give the media their “talking points,” and the newspaper or magazine would translate those talking points to be sympathetic, endearing, and palatable to the masses. But as Will and Kate got more and more used to selling out the Sussexes and commissioning Cambridge embiggening pieces, they’ve become more glib and bold with their quotes. They expected Tattler to spin the things that the Cambridges and friends actually say/think/believe in a more sympathetic way, but whoopsie, this time Tattler just didn’t do it. They simply published those quotes as is without cleaning them up for the masses. So rather than the “nice” version of “Kate realizes she’ll be working more to fill the void left by the Sussexes, but she’s willing to fulfill her Queenly duty even if it means sacrificing the daily school run,” we got “Kate is pissed and thinks the Sussexes are beyond selfish for leaving because now she’s forced to actually do this job she hates doing but has to do if she wants to win the big prize of being Queen one day.”

    • L4frimaire says:

KP cooperated with the article and gave the go ahead for their friends and staff to speak to Tatler. This is all on the Cambridges. Kate is friends with the editor, this magazine hates Meghan with a capital H so no, they can’t blame anyone but themselves. They knew this was coming and it did not turn out as they expected. They look petulant, spoiled and lazy because that is what they are. No one needed this stupid article and they wanted it out there. Whatever.

  7. Sofia says:

Oh I did wonder whether or not Tatler would respond. And wow. Well Dennen can kiss his friendship with Kate (if he still had one in 2020) good bye.

I also wonder if Tatler will continue to write articles praising her. Or will they step back a bit now? Or continue with the praise and ignore the fact that KP are pretending they never did business with them?

    • Becks1 says:

The fact that we are having a debate over this – whether or not KP knew/approved, the EIC saying he stands behind it – tells you that this article hit the Cambridges where it hurts. Tatler aimed its barbs REALlY well.

      • Lowrider says:

The discussions should be about Andrew so it seems Kate/KP are taking one for the team. Nasty.

      • MsIam says:

@Lowrider if Kate/KP were “taking one for the team” they wouldn’t have put out that statement denying everything. It actually looks more like they got “took”, lol. They thought they were getting a fluffy kitten when they actually got a porcupine. Oops!

    • Bella DuPont says:

I think one major problem super privileged people experience is actually getting the truth told to them. Very often, they are inadvertently surrounded by yes-men and sycophants who wouldn’t dream of telling them how nonsensical an idea may be for example.

It means that very often, they find out how out of touch they are when they eventually air an idea/notion that they’ve long held to be reasonable. Once it leaves the echo chamber and flies free, THEN they realise how bad/wrong/misguided they were.

Examples, Prince Andrew confidently airing his life wrecking ideas in an interview for millions to witness, after having fed the same plate of faeces to the royal echo chamber and getting nothing but approval and sympathy for decades.

Same notion here. Now that they’ve fed this bullshit to the public and are seeing the en mass, simultaneous vomiting, they’re now just finding out how badly their courtiers have been ass licking them. Nothing else to do but back-track like mad.

  8. Rae says:

*unfolds seat, gets comfy, starts eating popcorn*

Karma sometimes takes a while to emerge…but it sure is delicious to finally see it happening.

    • janey says:

right? this is the best thing to happen this week!!!
can’t wait to see what comes next…

      • Lady D says:

KP will try to end all talk about the article. Expect many, many kid pictures in the near future.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@Lady D – I am sure that Cain & Unable, along with the scumbags at KP masquerading as Royal Courtiers, would love for Harry to announce Meghan’s second pregnancy sometime this week.

I hope the Sussexes go dark for the next three weeks to sit back and just watch the show.

    • Liz version 700 says:

I am pouring butter on my popcorn as we speak. I needed some lighthearted gossip after months and years of so much depressing stuff. This hits the spot!

  9. Toot says:

I love that Tatler exposed KP’s BS. They came straight out and busted them and their denial. lol

    • Silas says:

Like, damn. What is going on here. Who did the Cambridges piss off? Is this about Rose?

  10. GuestWho says:

I hate how the Sussexes (Meghan in particular) are being blamed for this inadvertent hit piece. I’m sure the first place they would go to try and trash cain and unable would be a rag that not only has close personal ties to the Cambridges, but has abused Meghan for years. So stupid.

I love the update and the statement from Tatler. Think that will make it into the RR’s twitter feeds?

    • lily says:

If Meghan was truly petty, which I wish she was. Anti-Cambridge stuff would have been appearing in publications by November 2018, when the campaign against her truly began at full force. But she didn’t and still hasn’t.

Kate and William are lucky Harry didn’t marry me cause I would have destroyed them by now.

    • Bren says:

This just proves why the Harry & Meghan’s statement that they will no longer respond to inquiries or engage with the named tabloids was a critical and smart move. I laugh out loud when anyone accuses the Sussexes of feeding the tabloids. We all know if the tabloids had an ounce of evidence that the Sussexes were behind these stories they would be outed in an instant.

      • GuestWho says:

Exactly. If they were behind any kind of smear, THAT would be the story. Beyond not being ginormous a-holes, H&M are not stupid enough to walk into that particular trap.

  11. S808 says:

    *grabs popcorn* GIRRRLLLLLL the mess!!!!

Of course KP knew! They always know, they’re just selective in what they issue a rebuttal about. This was a complete and utter misfire. there’s already been multiple versions of KP’s rebuttal and now Tatler is pushing back?

The fact that W&K seemed to have built a parenting plan based on the Sussexes doing the bulk of the work and getting all the flack in the press….I can’t. They truly underestimated the length Harry would go to protect his wife.

    • Liz version 700 says:

The best part is the Sussex silence. The entire fiasco is delicious, but at this rate I fully expect us to find out about any future pregnancies when Harry announces the birth. After the hell that the royals dumped on a Meghan last time… I expect a release via a new Instagram account guess what these are our newly born triplets Beyoncé, Tyler and Oprah . No I don’t expect that but it would be fun. Meanwhile the Sussexescare living their quiet life and the Cambridges have gotten everything they ever wanted until they are begging for mercy.

  12. vexa says:

THE FACT THAT TATLER CAME OUT AND SAID IT WAS AUTHORISED HOLY SH-T!!!

  13. Digital Unicorn says:

Ooh – Tatler are standing by their story and calling out KP, interesting. AND they KP collaborated with them on it. Tatler have basically said Cain and Unable told them to write sh!t about the Sussex’s.

Hmm, their seems to be a bit of a falling out with Katie Keen and the Taler editor, esp if he sanctioned that hit piece and lets face it it was.

    • Britt says:

It was only a matter of time before the media started throwing the Cambridges to the wolves. This is no doubt let’s me know that they did some really shady shit towards members of their family.

    • Ali says:

Meanwhile the Sussexes are asleep and happy in California.

  14. Who ARE these people? says:

What goes up must come down.

  15. Summergirl says:

This sentence just blows my mind: “Meghan and Harry have been so selfish. William and Catherine really wanted to be hands-on parents and the Sussexes have effectively thrown their three children under a bus.” I don’t even know where to begin…

    • Noodle says:

Especially since last year William came out and said he basically doesn’t spend a lot of time with the kids (pre-pandemic, at least).

      • Tessa says:

William used the three children to “show up” Harry. What sort of father does a PR stunt showing him running across a tarmac carrying luggage with the two eldest running after him and Kate holding the younger one. They did not let the nanny be seen for obvious reasons. And they push those kids out like they are sending them on auditions for TV shows.

      • Lady D says:

Maybe when George grows up he can ask daddy why he used him and his siblings to stab his uncle in the back?

    • Lowrider says:

The Cambridge’s are selfish to believe Harry and Meghan should rearrange their life for them.

    • morrigan01 says:

Someone really needs to tell William that his kids are NOT Harry and Meghan’s responsibility. They are not George, Charlotte and Louie’s nannies or caretakers like Nanny Maria. It is not their job to live their lives wrt those three kids. Harry and Meghan have their own child to worry about and take care of.

William (and Kate and Carole, because I’m sure they think the same as this too) entitlement REALLY came through with that bit about the kids. God forbid they actually have to do what everyone else in the world has to do when they are busy and MAKE time to spend with the kids, if they really want to.

    • A says:

Notice also that it’s all about William and Kate’s kids. That William and Kate wanted to be hands-on parents, and the Sussexes took that away for them by leaving. Not a single word or a thought about how maybe, just maybe, Meghan and Harry also might have wanted to be hands-on parents as well to their own child, but couldn’t because they had to cover for Kate and William and pick up the slack constantly. Not even a mention of the fact that they’re parents to begin with. Funny how Meghan has to do more to help Kate manage the school run, because obviously, Meghan doesn’t do the school run ever, does she? How convenient it is for whoever said that idiotic quote to completely forget Archie’s existence.

  16. Becks1 says:

If I’m reading the KP denial correctly – they aren’t saying they had NO knowledge of this, they’re saying there are “inaccuracies and false misrepresentations” which were not put to them before publication. So….they knew the article was being written, but just thought it would make Kate look good?

    • S808 says:

It sounds like someone pulled one over on them. Now I’m wondering who the Cambridges pissed off over there cause it was a pretty scathing write up.

    • Rapunzel says:

Becks- yeah, that seems to be what KP is saying… that there were inaccuracies they didn’t see, not that they didn’t know this article was happening.

And technically, Tattler’s denial didn’t deny that. They say KP knew about the article. Not that KP read the article beforehand and verified all the facts. They also say they asked KP to work with them, but don’t actually say KP did work with them. Tattler carefully worded this denial. I think it’s possible someone at Tattler got pissed that KP would not cooperate. That could explain the snark. I think it’s also possible KP assumed Tattler would just write a puff piece so they didn’t bother paying attention. Then they were surprised when the article didn’t blow smoke up their bums.

    • Thea says:

Wouldn’t false misrepresentation mean the truth? Lol.

      • Becks1 says:

@Thea – yes! lol. but that aside – KP isn’t saying “none of the duchess’s friends spoke to Tatler” or “this story is 100% fiction” they are saying it contains a “wide swathe of inaccuracies.” Like Kaiser said – so what parts are you denying KP??? They’re not denying all of it.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, good catch, that is some VERY specific wording , like, “We gave all these quotes, we just weren’t astute enough to realize how damning they would be”. I’m reminded of Andrew inviting Emily Matlis and her interview team to tour the palace and talking about how well he thought it had gone. Utter obliviousness and incompetence.

I wonder if this Twitter spat with the editor will signal open season on the Cambridges (now that they don’t have Harry and Meghan to kick around) or if this is more like a warning shot.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Sit down, take your shoes off and have a glass of wine, please do. Now tell me more about this Twitter spat. LOL! LOL! I think I am team Tatler EIC person.

  17. taylor says:

ohhh could it be possible that kp knew about, but rejected working on it, and that’s why it came out so bad? i’m trying to find some sense in this.

    • BayTampaBay says:

There is no sense in this. It is a bad summer popcorn movie. Would you like an extra-large lemonade or a Coke with your salty popcorn? LOL!

  18. JT says:

Harry and Meghan have always remained classy, in they’ve never threw anyone under the bus. In the six months since they’ve left, all of the statements have been in regards to themselves. H&M could’ve burned everything to the ground if they wanted to. H&M’s focus is mainly the rota, with a few insider quotes saying the wish they had support. Which is nothing compared to what hasn’t been stated about Meghan in particular. It’s amazing that they continue to get the blame over a puff piece that backfired.

  19. Britt says:

    I’m thinking the following…

Either this is a distraction from Andrew to get people’s focus off that. Everytime anything Andrew related comes up, nonsense is spouted about the Sussexes but this time it’s about the Cambridges.

The Cambridge’s have really ticked someone off and they’re angry at them. That whole article was shady and in no way just a Meghan and Harry hit piece.

The media is pissed that their money makers are gone and the Royal Family didn’t do enough to keep them or pressure them to drop the lawsuits and now the media are resorting to throwing the Cambridge’s and Cornwalls to the fire as payback and to make up the difference.

They’re trying to get ahead of Omid’s book and thinking this will stop the hype by getting the truth out aka People Magazine/ Thomas Markle story.

    • MsIam says:

Or maybe somebody recognizes bullsh*t when they smell it and they just got tired of the smell? The Keens have been pumping themselves up by diminishing the Sussexes for the past two years but they have very little to show for it. Time to put up or shut up and stop being “keen” about everything.

  20. lemonylips says:

I bet they only saw the title Catherine the Great and were keen to read it, but y’know, kids and all….

  21. Tanguerita says:

HOW ARE THEY SO F….CKING BAD AT THAT?I just don’t get that. These insignificants have spent their whole useless life in the limelight, why are they so bad in managing their image?

    • Ali says:

Ego. The Cambridges have a hugo ego because William may become king.

      • Tanguerita says:

you are right, of course. Case in point – Andrew and his interview. I mean – he thought that it went really well.

    • ArtHistorian says:

That’s what happens when you have lived your entire life in an insulated bubble of privilege whilst also being quite stupid. Like @Tanguerita said: Andrew genuinely thought that his disaster of an interview went well – this is what happens when insularity, entitlement, arrogance and stupidity meet: complete and utter tone-deafness. These people have never lived in the real world and it shows.

      • notasugarhere says:

Responding to one of your comments from another thread.

@ArtHistorian. When I write a long comment, I copy and paste it into notepad. After I submit the comment, I wait to see if it posts. If it doesn’t, I have the comment saved in notepad and can try to repost.

      • ArtHistorian says:

        @nota
Thanks. I’ve just done this with a long post about the history behind the Windsors

      • A says:

@ArtHistorian, with Andrew especially, he’s been catered to his whole life. His mummy acquiesced to him and never bothered to discipline his stupidly boorish behaviour. He’s never had a single person say no, ever. The Queen used to have staff that could do that with a degree of tact, but those people have since left, and she’s left with folks who don’t know how to do these things effectively which is why everything is such a massive shitshow for her right now.

    • Lowrider says:

      Narcissists, egos, selfishness etc..

    • Liz version 700 says:

Honestly I don’t thing William and Kate are that bright. Hahaha. More ego, less brains.

      • Tanguerita says:

but there is usually a difference between not that bright and vomit-inducing stupid. Like, no brain at all, just a tiny pile of bird shit.

  22. Yoyo says:

Cain and unable wanted Harry and Meghan to do the work and take credit for it.
When Meghan saw the Royal Foundation books, she told them that the Hub’s cookbook was the work of the women and it was to be only used for them.
Then maybe she asked Harry, how come you’re doing all the work and Cain and unable are getting credit for it.

    • 809Matriarch says:

Yep! Let’s not forget that simpering Phil Dampier mess saying that Meghan’s successful launch of the Smart Set was actually bc of Kate. Boy did that ever backfire. Kate was trending and not in a good way, with the #KateMiddletonSuccessStory. Sometimes bring out the hashtag and look at the hilarious memes Phil’s dumb story spawned.

  23. paddingtonjr says:

Oooh, a return to juicy, fluffy Royal gossip! Everything’s going to be okay. Let the snark begin!

  24. Yoyo says:

Epstein and Prince Andrew on Reelz at 10 pm (eastern).

  25. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

I love the way the article mentions PWT’s Rose Garden exploits and then says, tersely, that none of the Norfolk set has commented on it.
Not that it didn’t happen. But that a Lord Lucanesque wall of silence has grown around it.
So much delicious shade. Karma is a divine, divine thing. Even makes my neighbours’ feral kid-monsters, who are screaming their gruesome heads off right now, bearable.

    • Silas says:

I think Kate and Will handled the Rose issue terribly. There were unflattering articles about David and Rose in the press and then for the church photographs, we saw how uncomfortable Rose looked while Kate was surrounded by her family and friends.

Cheating was 100% William’s fault. In a fair system Kate should not have had to play along but unfairness pays her bills. She benefits everyday from it and wields it against others and I think making a “fuss” about any of it may have led to this article. Even arrogant William was trying to play peacemaker.

    • Beach Dreams says:

I said this in the previous thread, but I think that’s as good of a confirmation as we’ll get from the British media. They basically said “yeah, the affair happened” in a slick and roundabout manner.

      • Becks1 says:

The Tatler story comes really close to the word “affair” – talking about how there was a rift that was due to Rose’s closeness with William….given the Cambridge freakout last year over the story….Tatler knew what they were doing with that line.

  26. Harper says:

KP/Carole/Kate just made a mistake if they thought that Tatler would abandon their trademark snark for a whole article of sugary praise for Kate. It seems as if KP/Carole may have sanctioned some “friends” of Kate to speak to Tatler but they were just too naive about it. Of course Tatler is going to keep these friends talking until they get the good quotes–exhausted, trapped, furious.

I’m looking at how the sources are referred to — and there are royal courtiers, a good friend of Kate’s, another friend, a member of the young royal set (?), a royal insider, a friend of the Middletons, a country grandee, a skilled craftsman, a visitor to Anmer, another visitor, a friend of Donna Air, members of Pippa’s circle. So Tatler talked to Kate’s friends but did a little investigatory journalism and also got to some other sources that Carole didn’t provide. Carole would not want Donna Air’s dirt reaching the public.

Well, the whole article is in print now and won’t go away. Kate and Carole must be smashing those scented candles against the wall today.

    • Yoyo says:

Any of unable’s friends being naive is laughable, they know tattler and the British tabloids.

      • Harper says:

I don’t think Kate’s sanctioned sources necessarily sit with reporters and opine on Kate on a regular basis. Her circle is supposedly famous for keeping quiet about her. It’s one thing to grab a copy of Tatler and read it and thus “know” it that way. It’s another thing to sit with a seasoned reporter like Anna Pasternak and start talking on the record. The friends probably meant well but good reporters can cozy up to a source and make them feel like they are just friends dishing about a mutual friend until the reporter feels they have enough dirt and then it’s later sucker!

I bet there is a big guessing game going on now with Carole/Kate/Wills as to WHO SAID WHAT.

      • ArtHistorian says:

Yeah you have to be really careful around reporters. An old room mate of mine got completely burned by a journalist she thought was a friend – she was basically tricked into leaking a government-funded report before it was officially released. This reporter used their acquaintance to get ahead professionally. She caused my room mate a lot of personal anguish and jeopardized her job. It was really nasty.

    • Tasz says:

@Harper FWIW I agree with your comments. I think this is a good example of how the Cambridge team operates. Request for access granted, trot out a few KP friends/courtiers to regurgitate the tale of pitiful, perfect, hardworking Kate and her wonderful family then throw in a little Sussex bashing for good measure. If this article had been written for the Daily Fail or the Sun, it would have gone as expected. However, I don’t think the Middleton’s were aware that some Turnip Toff tea was going to be served with the perfectly keen scones.

      • A says:

The Tatler is enmeshed in the aristo crowd in ways that the other tabloids aren’t. When people agree to talk to them, they’re not just speaking to a reporter, they’re speaking to a person who gets it in the sense that they get what it’s like in that crowd.

There’s a level of comfort there whereas that doesn’t exist with other tabloids like the DM or the Dim. Those papers have to tread carefully in how they cover these things, and their sources, in turn, tend to be more cautious and rehearsed with what they say. It’s clear that the people the author talked to let loose in a way they never would have dared to with any other tab.

  27. Paperclip says:

    That update is just…*CHEF’S KISS*

  28. Osty says:

Today has been a good day 😀😀😀😀😀,kate and carole jenner should let this go cos if they try to fight it Tatler and all the other snobs will cut them into pieces and show them their place .she will always be a commoner to the crown or no crown . She should know that by now

  29. Cosmo says:

They are only denying it now because since it has come out it makes them look bad. They are so stupid they couldn’t see that themselves.

  30. Wowgust says:

Wow, the story’s getting more and more interesting.
I think, that finally it comes from Turnip Toffs. Together they decided to gently remind who Midds are – that’s why the article is not ONLY about Waity, but also about Pipster and Carole. Ok, but if they JUST run this story it’s easy for KP to declare that everything in the article is not true. And moreover paid bots from DM will indignantly write that this story comes from Sussex camp to smear the “class act, respectful, educated, personable, professional, elegant, great mother, loving wife, and beautiful on the inside and out. She is a wonderful, genuine representative for both England and the Commonwealth and a very positive role model.” (Real comment from DM).
So they choose very elegant option. For example, Editor’s calling to Waity and talking in the sweetest words with her. Hey, how’s it going. I heard you have some problems after megxit. Oh, you’re tired? Man… Oh, yes, sure, I can understand you, you’re living in the HUGE house with a lot of staff, doing 3 calls a week via Zoom… I see you’re OVERTIRED… Oh, by the way, it’s a good story, what you think about making a cover, uh?
Stupid and conceited Waity is ok with it, probably she believes she deserves it. She guesses that the story will be sugery, but when she saw what was going on she made a next step (KP announcement). But still it’s the good-made pitfall, editor, who stands behind the tatler staff (and aristos, who stand behind the editor) made his step.
Wow, I’m waiting what’s going further!

    • Keen.Kate.not.a.karen says:

Kate has only done 8 Zoom calls (and one of those was the bingo) in the 10 weeks of the UK lockdown – so less than once a week.

  31. Mtec says:

Interesting, seems that when it matters to them (ie something makes them look bad) they’re completely capable of issuing a denial to a story they deem false.

  32. Elizabeth Regina says:

I have a different take on this. I think Tatler are trying to pull a “Vogue” best seller issue stunt with the cooperation of the Cambridges and KP. Unfortunately for Kate it all went south as Richard is a journo first and a friend second. Plus Richard’s loyalty is to his fellow aristos, something Kate will never be. He does not respect her and knows she needs him more than he needs her, hence the throwing under the bus. Tatler simply hasn’t got the appeal of Vogue and this is reflected in the numbers. Edward has made his magazine very cool which has caused a bit of envy.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Richard, aka Tatler EIC person, is trying to make Tatler a global publication in the same way that US Vogue, British Vogue and French Vogue are truly global publications. I can buy US Vogue, British Vogue and French Vogue at any Barnes & Noble or high end book store in Florida.

Only one Barnes & Noble in Tampa and only one Barnes & Noble in Lee County Florida have Tatler. The Barnes & Noble in Lee County Florida only receives six copies a month of Tatler for the store racks.

    • Nyro says:

There was a quote of him saying “Tina Brown had Diana and I have Meghan Markle”. Middle class Kate ran off his meal ticket, the star who was supposed to catapult his Tatler to what it was back in Diana’s day and make him an international media star.

      • Elizabeth Regina says:

Interesting. It makes a lot of sense. He is supposedly obsessed with Meghan but does not want to risk upsetting Kate and probably had to watch Meghan go over to Vogue. Will explain some of the passive aggressive nature of his articles. Can’t have the one he really wants but be forced to work with the friend who on paper is supposed to be the better bet. The dirt he has on Kate must be extraordinary. KP had better watch it.

      • Nyro says:

Elizabeth, eventually they’re all going to turn on her. She was instrumental in pushing Meghan out and the rota rats and everyone else who reports on the royals know that this has messed up their money and their chance to become stars. It’s why they’re all so jealous and hateful toward Omid. He bet on the right one and will benefit greatly, both financially and profile-wise. It’s going to be really bad for them once Covid has calmed down and H&M are able to kick start their foundation. They will be bigger than ever and the rest of the royals are going to be relegated to local status.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Elizabeth & Nyro – What many BM editors are starting to realize is that Katy Keen does not sell to a global audience and Normal Bill does not sell at all but the Sussexes do sell globally due to their global appeal.

      • S808 says:

Tatler, along with the RRs expected YEARS worth of stories and lots of money to come from Meghan marrying into the BRF. They were all fine with playing the game with Kate to spite Meghan because of the clicks but things switched up when the Sussexes left and cut off KP/British Tabs. Now all they have is Kate and Will who don’t drive engagement at all. It’s definitely plausible that Tatler and the tabs are pissed.

  33. Harla says:

What I find interesting in this article is not one person mentioned how kind, generous, compassionate, passionate about helping others Kate is, you know the usual things Meghan’s friends and co-workers say about her. That to me is really sad.

    • MsIam says:

It’s really telling as well. Meghan has her detractors too no doubt but they are counterbalanced by her supporters. Who does Kate have other than her mother and the Royal Rota? It doesn’t even seem that William is in her camp since he’s sneaking off to the Rose garden.

    • Becks1 says:

The article literally says there isn’t anything bad to say about Kate, but nothing good either.

That’s…..not a great assessment of her character.

      • Dinah says:

..And doesn’t cover the cover title ‘ Catherine the Great’ .
        Serious questions:
What are the achievements, acts, deads, etc. that make Kate ‘great’?
Why aren’t there any people in that article who talk about doing a project with here, e.g. HOW she impacted people?
Are their any kids who really are inspired by the things she did or is doing?

None of the friends and staff quoted in the article could tell a real story, from head to tail, that proves how great Kate actually is, how remarkable she is, how she conducts anything that will inspire anybody to follow suit. Nothing of that in the article. So sorry: that ‘Catherine the Great’ piece is not convincing anybody of Kate’s greatness.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

I doubt if Kate has any real friends. It’s just her and her siblings, with mother dearest pulling the strings. She jettisoned her old friends as soon as she got the ring in order to blend in to the RF.

    • Beach Dreams says:

That reminds me…last spring, one of the British reporters (I forgot if it was an RR or a regular journalist) was trying to fish for more gossip on the Rose situation. The reporter asked a bunch of toffs in Will and Kate’s social circle about it and framed many of these people as Kate’s “friends”. Of course they said nothing, but they DID mention the businesses/shops they ran. It’s clear that the toffs see Kate as nothing more than a promotional tool when it suits them; otherwise she’s just another arriviste in their eyes.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I think it goes back to EACH too. I read on a very unreliable gossip site that the Keen Cambridges tried to take credit for work done by the local gentry and titled aristocrats for EACH simply because Bill & Cathy had their names listed as Royal Patrons in some fundraising literature.

    • A says:

They didn’t say anything nice at all! All of her friends just called her a big blank. Not one of them even said the most basically polite things like, “Oh, I love how she takes care of her family.” etc. Nothing. Not a damn thing.

Really makes you wonder who the sources for all of those endless embiggening articles about Kate were. Because it sure wasn’t this crowd.

  34. Guest says:

    Hahahahahahahahah.

  35. AGreatDane says:

Everyone involved has spent their entire lives surrounded by people who look and think exactly like them, so it’s easy to believe that they thought this premise would go over well with the public. That EIC is a real piece of work, though. He couldn’t wait to tell the world he and Kate were school friends, but now it seems he has someone else in his corner. The kidskin gloves are coming off baby!

    • BayTampaBay says:

I am placing my bet now, I bet we begin to see Richard EIC person and Tatler rehabilitate the Sussexes because the Sussexes sell print copy of Tatler just by showing up and having their picture taken. Tatler needs the Sussexes future cooperation and Richard EIC person knows it as he has said as much and I think he is ready to bury the hatchet…………in the Keen Cambridges.

      • L4frimaire says:

The Sussexes have zero incentive to deal with that rag. Except for British Vogue and one or two broadsheets, they have no interest in the mainstream British press. They don’t need to say a damn thing to Tatler and they’ll write about them anyway.

      • morrigan01 says:

Exactly @L4frimaire. Harry and Meghan don’t need the British Press at all. They never did really, since they always had global appeal, but since leaving they REALLY don’t need the British Press. Remember, Meghan’s first interview after she and Harry were dating was with the US-based Vanity Fair. That a LOT of the British Press’ pants in a bunch. Then there was her guest-editing British Vogue, which is also a global brand publication.

The Tatler is pretty insignificant when it comes to their global appeal and reach. They have ZERO reason to engage with that magazine or anyone who runs it.

  36. Lisa says:

    This is just delicious.

  37. Harla says:

How odd, this cover story is no longer on the Tatler online site. Mmmmm….

    • Harper says:

‘Tis very odd how it’s disappeared. Perhaps Will demanded it be pulled down or Tatler would be facing another human rights lawsuit from his Royal Incandescence. We’ll see if a new, revised version of the article is posted but with less anti-Kate or anti-Carole sentiments. Just like the story about how Rose would keep Will company for dinner at Anmer when Kate was gone–that story got pulled and reposted minus that juicy news.

      • BayTampaBay says:

The story is already in print. Not much they can do about it now.

Over at the DataLounge some anti-BRF poster cut and pasted the whole article into a thread.

      • Nic919 says:

And if they don’t sue for libel it’s because they cannot sue for things that are true.

  38. TheOriginalMia says:

What comes around, goes around. When you clown, and the clownery comes back on you. This is delicious.

  39. Awkward symphony says:

The palace statement basically confirmed twobthugs
#1 that there is no “dont complain dont explain”
#2that they regularly work with tabloids, authorise hit pieces against the Sussexs especially Meghan (notice how they didn’t deny the bridesmaids story🙄 nor the “Meghan made kate cry” story back in 2018.

The keenbridges are now in quick sand. Any movement will draw attention back to their agreement with the press especially as they continue to work with daily mail despite Meghan’s lawsuit and later harry’s hacking lawsuit against the sun.
I’m glad alot of people are not falling for this. They are only denying it because of the massive pushback especially as the British public is angry with politicians who have shown this week that they are above the law/rules and can get away with.

  40. Mtec says:

My tinfoil-hat theory is that Carole was trying to arrange another glowing article with what she and Kate thought was a friendly outlet, but that no journalist nor the editor was really up for another puff piece about the Cambridges and reluctantly agreed to it given the cooperation they would have from KP. However, once they started going around asking for quotes from aristocratic sources (who are also probably tired of puff pieces) they let their frustrations with Kate and the lot be known with the backhanded “compliments.” —this, I don’t think Carole and the Cambridges foresaw. I think people in their circles are just so tired of them and Kate’s constant fakeness and rebranding as the “Future Queen Catherine the Great” or w.e other embiggening word Carole wants to associate with her.

    • Nic919 says:

I agree that this article started with Carole. What we need to find out is why Anna Pasternak spiced up her article with Turnip Toff critiques. Was that always the intention and the Middletons got fooled?

    • A says:

I think Carole maybe arranged it, but if she did, she didn’t do the necessary homework, which is to direct the author to carefully cultivated sources who will be able to parrot the intended narrative. I think she expected that all of that old stuff about her and her family being seen as greedy social climbers was all in the past after the stuff with Meghan and that they could rely on the Tatler to do an adequate job of things, and so didn’t bother to carefully script the message like they should have.

The result is this. An article where the people the author spoke to spilled the whole beans. I expect the author started with a list of acceptable people to contact for quotes, received a few curiously shady ones, and then followed up by reaching out to more people who gave her the whole torrent. And that’s the point where the intention of the piece changed from embiggening to, “Holy shit look at this.”

  41. Beach Dreams says:

WOW. For the editor to come out and flatly state that KP knew about this for months…it just reinforces how much Will and Kate have been working with the press. Clearly something went awry for Tatler to throw practically EVERYTHING at Kate in this article: her social climbing, her faux posh accent, her calculating demeanor, her laziness, her coldness towards Meghan (couched in the usual media narrative against Meghan) her mother and her sister, Rose…it’s just *so much* in one story.

Did Dennen and Pasternak originally intend for this to be a puff piece, or did they anticipate that some of the sources would have some nasty things to say about Kate and the Middletons? Regardless, why go this far and basically burn your relationship with KP? Because putting this feature out is one thing, but to actually say that KP is lying means that Tatler is going to be on ice with Camp Cambridge/Middleton. I don’t know if this is the beginning of the British media finally taking their gloves off and stepping back from whatever agreement they have with Will, but this kind of PR meltdown is rare for the Cambridges.

  42. kyliegirl says:

I don’t think the Cambridges are well liked in the Aristo circles. Many different sources have said that Will is a bore and not the down to earth persona that he tries to sell. He knows his rank and uses it. I think people genuinely liked Harry though unfortunately they were asshats to Meghan. I believe we are seeing the Aristo’s giving the Cambridges a warning shot. Things are not well in the realm. Mike Tindall also alluded to the growing distance by saying the WhatsApp group has gone silent with everyone just getting on with things. In a time when most people are reaching out to family members more than ever it seems odd that the communication is dropping. Interesting that the RR are trying to repair the damage. Something they NEVER did for Meghan. I wonder why. Hmmm.

  43. yinyang says:

What recieving billions in taxpayer funds is not enough, you need to be showered with praise and honours too. These people are insufferable. Really the lowest.

  44. Catherine says:

When or if you become successful, rich and/or famous: your so-called friends and sometimes family (in MM’s case) turn on you, use you to promote themselves. Happens all the time. Happened to Diana, to Fergie. Happens in the US constantly to professional sports players, actors. It’s sad and disgusting. Tatler is the oldest tabloid in the world, and the snobbiest. They are disgusted and will always be disgusted by the Middletons because they are “middle class” and not “one of us”. This triply applies to MM – middle class, mixed race, divorced American. I correctly called this yesterday. Tatler is super mad that a middle class person married “their” prince. The article is wall to wall Posh Shade.

    • Becks1 says:

@Catherine, I’ll give you credit, you were the first to point out that this article was complete and total shade and was meant to be embarrassing for Kate and the Middletons.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

I agree. The class system is the last bastion and the aristos and middle classes cling onto it like their lives depend on letting other people know how superior and well bred they are. Kate must be absolutely terrified of ‘slipping up’ especially as her husband is rumoured to never let her forget her roots when it suits him. She was meant to have the star quality, common touch but sadly she is too bland and complaint, and devoid of any personality.

      • BayTampaBay says:

” especially as her husband is rumoured to never let her forget her roots when it suits him.”

Well she could have played “her roots” up to her advantage if she were smart enough to do so and ambitious enough to accomplish something for the greater good. (See Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke)

BUT NO…………..Cathy wants to be Queen. Someone needs to tell her (and Ma Middleton) that sitting on a throne is very lonely. She needs to read all the bios of Queen Alexandra that she can get her hands on if she does not want to be doomed to a life of early public retirement at Sandringham chalked-up to poor health with only her mother as a live-in caregiver and companion.

  45. Aurora says:

The best possible Karma that could ever befall the Keens would be for the Toffs to embrace Meghan and Harry.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Oh, they’ll never do that. The toffs are extremely insular; you’re either born into their world or you’re an outsider. They’ll never embrace someone who’s nonwhite. Just look at Emma Thynn, the first black marchioness. She’s biracial and she’s spoken extensively on how the aristocracy keeps her at arm’s length. These people are horrendously snobbish and racist. I’m actually quite happy they don’t like Meghan because they are awful people to have in your corner. It’s all the more telling that Kate and the Middletons have been so desperate to fit in for decades.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Meghan would do very well with the London fashion-arts-theatre-philanthropy set or even maybe the the Polo Set but I agree with Beach Dreams that Meghan does not need or want the Turnip Toffs.

However, like Aurora, I would loved to see the Turnip Toffs open their circle to Meghan just to spite Normal Bill.

      • MsIam says:

Jeez! God bless Meghan for wanting to marry into that mess. There is no way I would do that. I know when you are in love you live in your own fantasy bubble but you have to come up for air sometimes. Was Meghan that naive or did she just underestimate how horrible these people could be? Or was she convinced she could win them over if she worked hard enough? Or maybe she and Harry made a pact to leave if it got too rough? I’m guessing he told her or at least thought he could protect her with him being a prince and all but damn that all went south quickly.

      • morrigan01 says:

@MsIam honestly, I think Meghan WAS just naive, but I think it was a naivety born out of being born and raised in a different culture, altogether far removed from the likes of what she ended up marrying into. It can happen. Just, as a native born and raised LA SoCal Girl like Meghan, I can tell you the idea of all of this Turnip Toff stuff is just so ALIEN to me from observing it from the outside.

Because these people don’t actually have any real power. Within their little circle, yeah okay, sure. But, outside of that? A large majority of them are cash poor, and only have those names and titles to them, and that’s it. But real, actual tangible POLITICAL power? No. And when you grow up in a country that is a major, global superpower, you quickly realize what real money and power and influence actually IS and what it means. And the Toffs? No, that ain’t it chief.

That Turnip Toff set thing is just so *insular.* I wouldn’t be surprised if Meghan honestly thought it wasn’t going to be anything to really worry about, just like she didn’t think the British Tabloids were anything to worry about because we don’t have that stuff in the US. And Harry probably DID try and warn her, like he did about the British Tabs, but I think even HE naively thought that he would be able to protect her – and his family would protect her – once she was married to him and in the fold. Miscalculation.

  46. aquarius64 says:

Karma would be a King Henry (Harry) the IX and Queen Consort Meghan

  47. Meg says:

Wow so if its not the sussexs fault its the outlets fault? Nothing is ever the Cambridges fault? I love that even their friendly outlets are speaking up publicly at how bad the cambridges are at this instead if rolling over and being silent publicly LOL

  48. lizardqueen says:

It will never, ever happen but dont you just want Tatler to drop the email exchange between them and Kensington palace or something???? I just want SOMEONE to bitch slap the royals with irrefutable facts.

    • Nyro says:

If KP stands down and doesn’t respond, it’s confirmation that Tatler’s telling the truth. But leaked emails would be awesome!

  49. L84Tea says:

Ever since Omid’s book was announced, a lot of funny things have been going on. Could this too be related to that? Almost as if Tatler is doing their own speculating about what COULD be in the book (like the Sussexes picking up all the work slack while W&K get the credit, W&K icing Meghan out from the start, etc) and is trying to get ahead of it. Then when the book comes out, if all those details get discussed, Tatler comes off looking like a very credible source.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Do not forget that Lady Colin Campbell ran in the same circles with many of the parents of the people now running and working at Tatler. Her book comes out first and Georgia Arianna Ziadie is an equal opportunity disliker and shade thrower.

  50. Jaded says:

I fervently wish and hope Tatler does a similar smear-piece on Prince Pervert and Duchess Grifter in the near future. What with the Netflix documentary on him coming out, it would bring even more eyeballs to this heinous pig and his godawful ex-wife.

    • BayTampaBay says:

@Jaded – Will not happen. Tatler will not do it. It will have to be Vanity Fair or the New Yorker who does the heavy lifting of research. Tatler journalist cannot even get UK titles correct.

    • A says:

The Tatler is no good for hard-hitting, fact based journalism. They deal mostly with gossip and whispers, and that’s valuable in their own way.

  51. Valiantly Varnished says:

“Tatler’s Editor-in-Chief Richard Dennen stands behind the reporting of Anna Pasternak and her sources. Kensington Palace knew we were running the ‘Catherine the Great’ cover months ago and we asked them to work together on it. The fact they are denying they ever knew is categorically false.“

Excuse me while I go cackle in karma. Lolol.

  52. Reece says:

Oh look who doesn’t have the cover of little brother anymore.

  53. Izzy says:

I said it before and I said it again: the RF are just trailer trash in tiaras (except M&H, who frankly are the only remotely decent in the bunch). Nice to see trash getting trashed.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Diana called them gangsters and muggers in tiaras.

      • Maragret M. says:

Tin foil hat time, where does prince Charles and Camilla fit into this piece. Question who benefits with both Sussexes and cambridges being smeared?. I’m sure Camilla and Charles are tired of being glossed over for king and queen consort. I really do believe your overlooking the resentment of those two.

      • A says:

I don’t think they really feature into this at all. I expect that Charles is going to be utterly furious in the upcoming days and weeks that the younger generation is, again, overshadowing him with their personal drama.

      • Lowrider says:

This is KP, okay. Stop trying to pass blame!

  54. MissF says:

They should have known that the fluff pieces and the embiggening was never going to last. This wasn’t a piece designed to celebrate Kate- far from it (even though KP clearly thought it was going to be)- it’s a piece tearing her down in a snobby, sarcastic and terribly British way. They should also be scared about what Tatler know re pruning the roses.

    • IntheKnow says:

@missF, Tatler will tattletale about the Rose Bush when it suits their agenda and not one second before then. Worry not though, The Tale of Willam & Rose’s love story will come out.

  55. sunny says:

Headline, “House Cambridge shoots self in foot, blames Sussexes”. Lol. This is a historically friendly publication, with an EIC who is an old school chum of Kate’s- this is an embiggening attempt that blew up in their faces. Lol! This is what happens when you live in an echo chamber. And no doubt all of these stories are attempting to get out in front of Omid’s book. God, it is amazing how incompetent Will and Kate are. Time for a change in PR and strategy?

Also Tatler is extraordinarily well-connected so this story carries even more weight. As mentioned up-thread this probably is the end of Kate’s friendship with the EIC(or under strain). Does that mean Tatler runs more balanced stories about House Cambrdge?

Finally, if you are having your sources cooperate with the press for a story, maybe do some checking about how what they say appears to the public.

    • BayTampaBay says:

      “Also Tatler is extraordinarily well-connected”

NO SHIT SHERLOCK! There are 80 year old aristros, both male and female, that worked at one time or another for Tatler while they were waiting to inherit or just hanging out in London. Nicky Haslam worked for Tatler. Tina Brown was the Tatler EIC at the age of 23. Lady Colin Campbell was a Tatler contributor. The Duke of Richmond & Gordon was a photographer for Tatler before he took over the Goodwood Estate. Taki Theodoracopulos, now writing for the Spectator, wrote for Tatler.

  56. Abena Asantewaa says:

THERE IS FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, RUN RUN RUN! It is even baffling, and narcisistic to cooperaate on an issue hailing you as Catherine The Great, putting her on a pedestal, with a sprinkle of the usual anti Sussex shade. The entitlement in this article is breathtaking! There was even a boastful claim that Kate did not bring Meghan under her wings, because she and William were circumspect about Meghan. Shame on them. Kate is devious, she is only playing innocent because she has been caught and shamed. Anna Pasternak, who is anti Meghan, is not going to let Kate lie on her. Her reputation is at stake. The gravy train is chnging direction! Bye Kate

    • MsIam says:

There was no way that Kate would ever help Meghan because Kate doesn’t want any reminders of that “outsider” label too close to her. She and her mother were hoping the snobs would have forgotten about that by now but this article is a reminder that “ oh no, we never forget”.

      • S808 says:

Kate erased herself to make room for a person that would hopefully be accepted by those people. She would never help Meghan, she’s worked too hard and given up too much to form an alliance with Meg. That’s not what an aristo would do, therefore it’s not what Kate would do.

      • A says:

@S808, plus, it benefited Kate hugely to have Meghan around. For once, she wasn’t the outsider. She was very much in the in crowd if only because she was white. Instead of wising up to the fact and drawing on a sense of empathy for Meghan, she decided it suited her just fine to pay this awful price if it meant she’d be included with the rest of them for once, and she went along with it. Better her than Kate, probably.

Well, Meghan’s not there anymore. You can complain about her for the rest of your life, but it’s not going to work forever, and she’s no longer around to take the heat off of you. So Kate is back to being the outsider again. Instead of recognizing how such a situation is just awful and bad in terms of how it treats people, she still thinks she can beat it if she just becomes “one of them.” This is a reminder that she isn’t, and likely won’t be for a long time, if ever.

  57. S808 says:

I’m interested to see how their relationship progresses. Both seemed to have egg on their face from this. Moreso on KP’s side but still. I don’t see the relationship completely breaking down (a girl can dream) cause they both still need each other to an extent but I do think the backhanded compliments will continue to be present moving forward. maybe just not as obvious.

  58. L4frimaire says:

I’m going to read each and every one of these comments served up on a dessert platter. Good lord the royals are messy AF and are so clueless. They should never try to swim in the deep end because this is textbook example of in way over your head. Stick with the ribbons and plaques and stop trying to compete with fully formed adults who mind their business and know how to actually work. By the way, gorgeous weather here in California.

  59. lili says:

The toffs really don’t like her. In a way she’ll be always middle class to them, I believe.

  60. WhatFreshHell says:

British author Hilary Mantel received an enormous amount of criticism following her 2013 essay “Royal Bodies”, in which she wrote briefly and, I think, somewhat sympathetically toward Kate.

Mantel absolutely nails the reasons Kate was chosen for her role, particularly after the messy humanity of Diana. It’s a fairly long read but well worth it:

    https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v35/n04/hilary-mantel/royal-bodies

  61. Seraphina says:

It been a long day and I have Access Hollywood on in the background as I read all these comments. Not my usual show but I kid you not, Mario Lopez announces how comments that Kate dislikes her workload as false. Holy crap. Now this hilarious.

  62. Sass says:

That clapback from her old pal Dennen 😂🤣 classic

  63. BarbN says:

I don’t much like Kate or William, but in Kate’s situation I do feel a little bad for her, as it is now pretty clear that the “nobility” (I use that word sarcastically) in the UK will never accept her as being worthy of her rank as Duchess/Queen Consort, and as one of their own. All this shade is sad and disgusting when it is showered on someone primarily because they were not born into the aristo set. They did this to Meghan, and they’re doing it to Kate.
I have news for the toffs, turnip or other – you are NOT special because of an accident of birth. You are NOT more valuable than others because of your land, titles, ancestors, money, whatever. Your value comes from what you have given back, what you have made of your lives and your character, the ideals you live by and instill in your offspring.

    • Nic919 says:

The toffs only have power when you want to belong to their group, which is what Carole and Kate have spent decades doing. Kate still is insecure tries to fit but cannot.

Meghan never tried to fit in that group and while they have been critical, it doesn’t have any power over her.

If Kate had better values and did not dedicate her life to getting a useless title, she might have seen the value in being kind and welcoming to her sister in law. But she has been shallow her entire life and will remain so.

I don’t disagree with you on the behaviors towards these women, but there is a slightly more nuanced explanation, particularly vis a vis Kate and the Middletons. True aristocracy and nobility tend to be quite understated and don’t flash their wealth or titles (this is true in most countries, think of Princess Anne). You see it in the details, not outward displays. They tend to be very allergic to the behaviors of families like the Middletons who are ambitious (vicious even) social climbers. Vacations to Mustique, wearing massive engagement/ wedding and signet rings, living in hotel-like homes are big no nos and considered utterly classless. It worked for Kate because none of his “peers” would have PWT. Pippa tried, but ended up with a guy whose father bought his family’s title. Someone like Kate or Pippa (and Pippa’s husband), who are focused entirely on the superficial– fake teeth, big hair, not working– are an absolute nightmare to the set they so desperately ape. These factors don’t make the behaviors any less antiquated or deplorable, but they do help explain them.

I agree the aristo crowd sound like unbearable snobs& the nerve looking down on people who actually worked for their lifestyles. But says a lot that the Middletons have worked so hard to ingratiate themselves with this crowd who clearly don’t respect them& turns out they may not even be that discreet.

I honestly believe, shade and all, this was meant to be a Cambridge embiggening puff piece. But of course it is so tone deaf and entitled, because they are so desperate to be adored and so self-centered, abd self pitying. I was looking through the entire article finally. There are some glaring inaccuracies about the Sussexes, such as staff turnover, some of which was disputed in the lawsuit filing. Also the Cambridge’s have let go of or had staff leave them. They mention the Archewell announcement to show how selfish the Sussexes are, saying “Then there’s the matter of the Sussexes’ awful timing. As the Queen gave a historic speech urging the public to adhere to the government’s pleas for self-isolation – and on the day the prime minister was taken to hospital gravely ill from the coronavirus – Harry and Meghan chose to announce a new charity endeavour, Archewell, from their haven in LA.” It was leak. They haven’t officially announced anything, and I’m sure the writer knows that . Also, the part of Kate pulling Meghan under her wing is so condescending. I recall before Meghan, there was talk how Kate was trying to micro manage Harry’s personal life, and find him a suitable match. She’s a control freak. It’s obvious. Like who tells a bride what to do for her wedding. Can see her butting in and being snotty about it. They have people well versed in protocol so Kate could have sat that one out. Anyway, the whole thing is ridiculous and regardless of what the writer intended, people see through a lot of the Cambridge’s fake BS and Meghan isn’t there to save them from themselves. How can they dispute what is or isn’t accurate, unless they admit they themselves lied or exaggerated certain takes regarding the Sussexes. Also the whole climber Middleton thing, I’m just think back to all those tacky pap photos at Christmas in St. Barts for the Daily Fail. It was so obviously staged and thirsty, and sure rubbed a lot of the right people the wrong way. They are absolutely ridiculous, insecure and lazy people. They can keep fighting with Tatler over this.

I imagine that whoever was in charge of putting together that piece set about with the best intentions. No one in Kate’s circle would be able to speak to the reporter and provide quotes if a) they weren’t previously asked to, and b) hadn’t already agreed with Kate about what they should say.

So this was very much a planned article. All the royal tell-alls with unnamed sources are. This is how the royals speak to magazines–they don’t give interviews, they ask anonymous sources to speak discreetly to reporters to ensure a degree of plausible deniability.

What went wrong then? I think that none of the people whom Kate asked to speak to the Tatler reporter were really all that prepared in advance. Either that, or the people whom Kate asked to speak to the Tatler on her behalf just didn’t know her all that well. There’s something truly fcking baffling about the fact that all of these friends of hers who know her so well couldn’t think of a single nice thing to say about her. Not one. Even I’d try my level best to come up with something nice to say about her if I had been interviewed.

To me, the whole piece read as an attempt by the aristocratic circle to put Kate back in her place and reset the prior status quo. This was a way for them to remind her that she’s nothing but a craven, social-climbing commoner from a council flat and descended from coal miners. They are hitting back at the whole lot of them for deigning to presume that they could ever stand on equal footing to anyone else in the aristocratic circle, even though the rest of the aristocrats are just as craven and power hungry and fond of social climbing and titles and marrying into money as they claim Kate to be (*cough* Rose Chumley *cough*)

This is how the British royals speak to magazines! Their “tradition” of cultivating a “dignified” remoteness has become antiquated because it makes it harder for people to connect with them. One thing that has really benefited the Danish royals in terms of public appeal is the fact that they have let themselves be interviewed and have participated in documentaries about their work, royal history, jewels, estates, etc. The Swedish royals have done the same thing though perhaps not to the same extent as their Danish counterparts.

Some of these documentaries have been a combo of sit-down interviews and “fly-on-the-wall” scenes. Thus, the audience get a direct impression of their personalities, even a few glimpses of their authentic selves. It helps, of course, that Queen Margrethe II has an interesting personality as well as being both erudite and witty. She’s fun to watch. CP Frederik has a kind of endearing dorkishness. He’s quite laid back and has always been good at connecting with people, like his grandfather he has the so-called “common touch”. His younger brother hasn’t that charm. He’s always been more awkward and stiff. Hence, his popularity isn’t that great. His first wife was wildly popular because she was charming and charismatic.

Tatler is brave for not standing down despite the denial of the Cambridges. No apologies. They stand by their story. Too bad for Kate. That is her karma. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

    • A says:

The Tatler can afford it. They are a magazine whose intended audience is the posh aristocratic crowd. They can afford to push back against the royals and stick to their guns in some ways.

The Cambridge’s can’t keep her name out of their mouth. She lives rent free in Kates head. Taking bread out of her children’s mouths as she rolls that bus over them. Imagine, 11 engagements in one month, she’s so exhausted. Get the smelling salts and the scented candles.

    • Jaxonmeh says:

That’s not true. The Cambridge’s are not that great. And I prefer the Sussexes to the Cambridge fam any day of the week. If you don’t like them, then you forget about them. I don’t see why I need to.
