Guy Ritchie defends Madonna’s acting, will spend Christmas together

While director Guy Ritchie makes the press junket rounds in support of his highly anticipated (and swoon-inducing) new film, “Sherlock Holmes,” you can imagine that the topic of his famous ex wife, Madonna, is going to come up. But rather than dodging questions about Madge, Ritchie has been surprisingly open – and positive – about the mother of his son, Rocco. He even defended her acting skills and the one movie they did together, “Swept Away,” which was brutalized by critics and audiences alike. He also said that Madonna and he have always been in agreement that his past library of films isn’t appropriate for their kids – but he’s pleased that he’s finally made a movie his children can see.

“The whole thing is supposed to be ironic,” Ritchie says of the remake, which, although technically a romantic comedy, suggested that what a domineering woman really needs from her man is a good smack. “It’s about a man that hits a woman, and at the same time, it was her. There were all sorts of irony. If you ask me, everything about it was rather interesting, but it was such a feral relationship between a man and woman and you just can’t get away with that in contemporary society.”

His sublimated rage at Madonna notwithstanding, he is happy to defend her as a thespian. “If you ask me, I think she’s all right. I think she’s perfectly good. I just don’t think people can get her persona out of the way.”

Whatever happened between the two of them, one thing they are in agreement about is what is appropriate for children. And thus far, Guy Ritchie movies have not been on the approved list. Prior to this, Ritchie says, his kids with her Madgesty had never seen any of his films. It’s not the violence or the occasional sex scene, nor is he seriously worried about the films being disturbing to them. “It’s just the language,” he explains. “I don’t want them being conspicuously exposed to bad language.”

Finally, he’s made a movie his children can see. “It’s something the whole family could enjoy and at the same time it’s iconic and English and smart.”

There are also reports that Madonna will be spending Christmas day with Ritchie and all four of the children in England.

Madonna will be reunited with ex-husband Guy Ritchie as the former husband and wife celebrate Christmas with their children, according to a new report.

It was previously reported the “Snatch” director would be looking after sons Rocco and David Banda and daughters Mercy James and Lourdes over the holidays.

But now it appears a full family reunion will take place as the Material Girl jets into Britain with the kids so they can spend Christmas Day with the filmmaker at his country estate in Wiltshire, England.

A source tells Britain’s Mail on Sunday, “Madonna is flying in for 24 hours so Guy can spend Christmas Day with the children. Things are amicable between them and the children love Christmas at Ashcombe House in Wiltshire, which Guy has turned into a Santa’s grotto.”

The stars’ divorce was finalized in January, 2009.

I cannot wait to see this movie, and I hope it lives up to the hype. The trailers look fantastic and HELLO – shirtless Robert Downey Jr.! I’m there. I wonder if Madonna, Rocco, Lourdes, Mercy and David will all go see the movie with Guy when it opens Christmas day?

She looked much better in the face while they were still together. I guess she tried to console herself and improve her chances with a bit of facial surgery– but it never turns out for the better.

  2. Sumodo says:

Where’s Jhay-ZOOZ Loose? Holiday dump-ee? Actually, Madge and Guy’s divorce brought his career back. I’ll be watching Sherlock on Christmas! Team Ritchie!

  3. dude says:

I didnt know Kabhallah celebrated Christmas, isnt that a form of Judaism?

  4. Lauren says:

Guy really impresses me with his kindness towards his ex-Madonna. Most men would bash her to death, but for the sake of their children Guy remains a class act.

  5. princess pea says:

I frikken love that they seem to have remained friends, or at least friendly. That will mean so much to the kids for the rest of their lives.

  6. juiceinla says:

I agree with the others here who like that they are both so civil and actually kind when speaking about each other. I think they worked hard to make the marriage work, and what probably brought it down was Madge’s mid-life crisis, also known as the hideous cheekbone plastic surgery she keeps insisting on having.

  7. ogechi says:

@ Lauren my thoughts as well.

  8. UrbanRube says:

Just want to say that I saw “Sherlock Holmes” before I knew Guy Ritchie directed it, and I am seriously impressed with his slant on directing. It’s a very fun film and worth seeing. So go see it and help Guy make more of his own money so people will stop talking about how rich his ex is in comparison.

  9. Me says:

I think it’s great that they get along so well, and he does seem like a classy guy. I think Madonna looks amazing. I think she’s gorgeous and sexy, and I like the way that she dresses.

  10. Sumodo says:

Madge never converted to Judaism, Guy got tired of Kaballah. So, it’s only natural that Christmas is part of their custody deal. Still, where’s Jhay-ZOOS? On the loose?

  11. mollyb says:

To be fair, MSat, she is also the mother of his son David (not just Rocco).

  12. Goddess711 says:

I thought the big shit last year was that Guy was pissed because Madonna doesn’t celebrate Christmas and she didn’t want to fork over the kids on Christmas Day so Guy could celebrate with them?
Nice that he’s so generous with his assessment of her acting; keep those support payments comeing, Ms. Ciccone!

  13. Livia says:

“I just don’t think people can get her persona out of the way.”

Actually, when it comes to acting, I don’t think Madonna can get her persona out of the way. Which is why she’s perceived as a horrible actor. IMO, I think there’s some latent talent there, but she’s never going to be able to tap into it, because she’s more interested in being MADONNA when the cameras roll. Which is fine, I suppose – it’s what her fans want to see, and it’s what pays her bills. She’ll just never be the world-class, award-winning actress I think she always hoped she’d be.

  14. Raven says:

His career has really turned around since the divorce. He always seemed like Mr. Madonna during their marriage. Looks like the divorce has been good for him.

I’m looking forward to his new film. I’ve always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes.

  15. I’ve always liked Guy for his movies and now I like him more as a person.

  16. Rita says:

Guy has always been a good “guy” and will continue to be one. He and Madonna have small kids together, they are acting like responsible adults do with no badmouthing about each other. I like that, wish other former couples would act the same way, especially if children are involved. Life is too short to let bitterness and misery take control.

  17. loca says:

New found respect for Guy. Seriously!

  18. NicoleAM says:

She wasn’t bad in A League of Their Own, and she did win a Gloden Globe for Evita. (Although w/ musicals it’s really more singing than acting…) Other than those 2 exceptions, no she ain’t a great actor.

  19. That was something really interesting!

  20. Jazz says:

I’m hanging out for Sherlock Holmes!

  21. bella says:

Obviously, Guy is the bigger of the two of them…Madonna bad-mouthed him and made snippy comments about his pub for awhile. And anyone who defends her acting deserves an award of their own, ’cause she sucks out loud.

  22. Trillion says:

Madonna is unwatchable in that movie. It’s just painful every second she’s onscreen. How charitable of him to speak kindly of her non-existant acting ability.
Seriously, even Tommy Wiseau can act circles around her.

  23. Tiffany says:

    MSat,

Guy is David’s father as well as Rocco, they adopted him together before they separated.

  24. Diane gillan says:

shouldn’t the devil be collecting from her soon??? her daughter is almost at that age and if she keeps bringing these young uns around, they’ll be battling over them…wonder who’ll win??? or will they share since NOTHING IS OFF LIMITS for this whore as her “sex” book CLEARLY shows….

  25. Agnes says:

I always thought he was a good director and seemed like a cool person. She on the other hand is a great “performer”, mediocre singer and horrible actress.
