Miley Cyrus in black mesh Marc Jacobs at the Met: punky & appropriate?

Miley Cyrus

When I heard that this year’s Met Gala theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” I was really hoping that Miley Cyrus would be included on the invite list, and sure enough, she was. After all, Miley has been aiming to look punky for about the last year or so while she attempts to remold her image, and while on the street, Miley is mostly getting it wrong, she actually got it right last night.

Miley wore a nude Marc Jacobs gown with a black mesh overlay that looked like a glammed-up version of what one would see at a Sex Pistols concert at the Cain’s Ballroom. I really love the black cuffs, and the spikey rings are a nice detail. This is a very sexy dress that goes right to the edge without revealing any flesh at all, and Miley did up her hair in grand, stand-up fashion. If only for the evening, Miley shone as the most appropriate princess at this ball.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry put a fairy-tale spin on the punk concept, which is fitting because Katy usually looks most at home while wearing silly costumes. Here Katy wore a shiny, embellished Dolce & Gabbana dress (that was officially called the “Joan of Arc” gown) with a crown and crucifix earings. Katy poufed her locks up and went with her usual dramatic makeup that looked great with this outfit, but somehow she forgot all about the shoes. Black pumps, really? Well at least Katy accessorized with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana themselves.

Florence Welch

Florence Welch is often many things on the red carpet — last year she was both whimsical and weird at the Met — but she is never boring … that is, until now. For a woman who can dress like a rock ‘n’ roll lizard and still look fantastic, she looks surprisingly drab here in this fringey gown from Givenchy. Even Florence’s firey locks lack their usual bang. Florence could have run with the punky concept of the evening and really showed her stuff. Why so serious here?

Carey Mulligan in Lanvin at ‘The Great Gatsby’ NYC premiere: snoozefest?

Here are some photos from last night’s NYC premiere of The Great Gatsby. Considering the way this film is already being built up as THE EVENT of 2013 and considering that so many designers did Gatsby-themed lines associated with the film, I really was expecting a more eventful carpet. The fashion is a total snooze, which makes me think that everyone is saving their A-game for Cannes. Hopefully! Anyway, here’s the star of this mess, Carey Mulligan, in Lanvin, a surprising choice for her because she’s such a Prada girl. I initially mistook this for Prada, so I’m glad I looked it up. It’s… okay. Nothing special. Kind of basic. Just FYI: Carey IS a really small woman, but the dress does have a built-in corset, which is making her look even smaller.

Florence Welch in Miu Miu. I really dislike this dress. I “understand” why she’s wearing it – because she’s the next big thing in fashion/music/the world – but it looks like a glittery sailor suit to me. Flo can do better. She was at the premiere because she did some music for the soundtrack, just FYI.

Isla Fisher in Dolce & Gabbana. God, this is boring.

Mamie Gummer in…? I don’t know. I love her, but I hate the shoes.

Nina Dobrev came to the premiere! She wore Versace. She’s one of those women who makes couture look like it came from the mall – I think it’s because she looks perpetually 16 years old.

Jennifer Morrison in Dolce & Gabbana too. This looks like a too-fussy vintage dress. It also looks like her grandmother’s antique lace tablecloth.

Florence Welch in shiny green Givenchy: so rock ‘n’ roll or too much?

Florence Welch

Florence Welch brought her wild and weird vibe to the Grammy Awards last night. She worked every inch of a shiny and studded, jade green Givenchy design that was actually a runway design way back in 2009. I can’t think of another artist who could have pulled this off at the Grammys last night. This color looks fantastic on Florence with her bright red locks, and the face-framing fringe somewhat softens her already dramatic facial features. Florence doesn’t usually show a lot of skin, but that thigh slit is just right. And she didn’t try to pull a Jolie either — this look is all Florence.

Florence Welch

Katy Perry

Katy Perry and her massive rack chose to shake things up (compared to her pre-Grammys looks) with a mint-colored Gucci dress that put her boobs front and center. This dress is actually probably pushing it for CBS’ ridiculous dress code, but whatever. It’s the Grammys! This dress actually wasn’t bad — the fit was great, and that little train was just right. If anything, the color was completely wrong. A jewel tone would have been better than a shade generally found upon Easter eggs.

Katy Perry

Allison Williams

Allison Williams was also in attendance as Katy Perry’s “date,” which means … I have no idea. At this point (and it sounds terrible, I know), I would believe it if you told me that she, Katy, and John Mayer were partner swapping. Anyway, Allison wore a rather frumpy Kaufmanfranco gown that didn’t do anything to highlight her shape and (from far away) looked like it was made of the same material as the sails on pirate ships. It’s a very simple dress though, which fits the fact that she was only there for fun and not to take attention away from the artists being recognized. Up close, her gown was prety sparkly though, and her hair is just gorgeous.

Allison Williams

Kaley Cuoco

Kaley Cuoco wisely decided to trash those awful clip-on bangs that she wore for the SAGs. She also chose to go against the general formal trend with leather pants, a white t-shirt, and a jacket by Amen. I actually like this look! It’s very hair-band rock ‘n’ roll in a classier way than Axl Rose used to wear it.

Kaley Cuoco

Amber Rose

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa also walked the red carpet together. Amber’s dress wore a dress by Donna Karan, and her most important accessory (of course) was her huge baby bump. I love how Wiz seems to worship her.

Sean Penn still pursuing Florence Welch because he loves “fiery young women”

A week and a half ago, many of us were startled to hear that a new couple had been formed. Sean Penn, 52, was actively pursuing Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine. Besides the fact that many of us are Flo fans and we don’t want to see her tainted with Sean Penn’s raging douche, there was another shock: Florence is only 26 years old!!! She is exactly half Sean’s age. And no one even believes that she’s that young anyway. So, I kind of hoped that the story about Sean and Florence was a one-off, something that would be eventually disproven when Sean went on some kind of cigarette, booze and supermodel bender. But the rumor is sticking around, and it still sounds like Sean is pursing her:

Sean Penn has fallen hard for a red-headed rock star half his age! Penn, 52, and Florence Welch, 26, have been making sweet music together since meeting in late October, a source tells The Enquirer.

“Sean is completely smitten with Florence and she thinks he’s absolutely charming and fascinating,” said the course. “They met at an event in LA and sparks flew right away. Florence may be half his age, but he was relentless in his pursuit and followed her around the whole night.”

Florence is newly single after splitting from her events coordinator boyfriend James Nesbitt. According to sources, Sean and Florence have been burning up their cell phone batteries since meeting on October 27.

“Sean loves fiery, young, beautiful women, and there’s something about Florence that has him captivated. He says that she’s not only gorgeous, but it’s her personality that really knocked him out. He determined to make something of this.”

[From The Enquirer, print edition]

I think that Sean likes powerful personalities in theory. Like, he likes a woman who will argue with him and who he can actually have a conversation with, but that will only give him hell a few times, you know? Thus, his default is “pretty and vapid”. And young, of course. If Florence is actually 26 (?), then I feel like she will end up getting her heart broken by Sean. He does seem to have that douche intensity that some women fall for… it’s powerful stuff. Ugh. Poor Flo.

Sean Penn pursuing 26-year-old Florence Welch after meeting her in October

This is just an FYI: sources are currently claiming that Sean Penn might have found a new girlfriend. Ordinarily that wouldn’t be breaking news or anything, because the man goes through 20-something models like I go through tissues. But the catch this time is that his new girl might not be the typical 20-something model. Allegedly, he’s romancing Florence Welch and Florence + the Machine. NOOOOOooooo. I love her! She’s too good for him! There is photo evidence that Sean and Flo met several weeks ago at that LACMA event, and they look rather flirty too. So is it on? Ugh.

Florence Welch is the latest younger woman to have caught the eye of actor Sean Penn. The Florence And The Machine star met him at the Gucci Art charity event in Los Angeles two weeks ago and they hit it off instantly.

Now sources say that 52-year-old Penn has asked to meet up with her again.

‘Sean was flirting with her all evening and they got along like a house on fire,’ said an insider.

Florence, 26, split from her events organiser boyfriend James Nesbitt, 29, in September. Meanwhile Penn parted ways with Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson last year.

[From The Mail]

Back in May, there were also significant rumors that he was back on with his ex Petra Nemcova. I always thought that she just kind of followed him around and did whatever he wanted when they were dating, and that’s what he likes. You know? That’s why he dates 20-something models – he can’t handle being with a woman who has her own stuff going on, and he doesn’t want to be part of a relationship of equals. So why would a badass like Florence Welch – who is only 26 years, surprisingly (doesn’t she seem older?) – want to have anything to do with Sean? Ugh.

Amber Heard in little black Gucci at LACMA: lovely or OMG, awful necklace?

Amber Heard

By and far, the name of the evening for the LAMCA Art + Film event was Gucci. Keeping with the theme of the evening, Amber Heard wore a black Gucci dress with matching, open-toed, multi-strapped Gucci Lisbeth pumps, and the dress itself wasn’t bad at all. It was very figure-flattering, and Amber pulled the short length and sleeveless aspect off well. Now as for that “statement” necklace around her neck, I just don’t know what she was thinking. I suppose it fancies things up quite a bit with what would have otherwise been just another little black dress, right?

Amber is a gorgeous woman, and even though I’m still getting used to her with dark hair (for her role in Paranoia), she has a great presence on the red carpet. She definitely made a good choice going with an updo and bold lipstick (with matching nails) for this dress. Still not sure about that necklace though. I think if it had been missing those little “fans” at the top, it would have been okay. As it stands, the necklace is far too much of a “statement” piece.

Minka Kelly

Minka Kelly and Chris Evans both attended the event but walked the red carpet separately. Minka has certainly been embracing the maxi-dress trend lately, hasn’t she? Girl’s got such a great figure, and I’ve got no idea why she’s hiding it (cue vicious pregnancy rumors?), but this particular maxi dress is Gucci as well. She also avoided giving sideboob in manner of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Good for Minka.

Florence Welch loves her weird ass fashion, and Gucci was able to fit the bill here with this blue-violet, chiffon gown. This is a very severe look, but Florence is not a subtle woman by any stretch. Her hair and makeup are appropriate(ly weird) too, but I would have added a simple and sparkly necklace to complete the look.

Florence Welch

Jeremy Renner was there too, bitches. He looked exactly like he always does at an event, but I’m not complaining.

Jeremy Renner

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were also in attendance! I don’t know who designed this spangly, shapeless, sleeveless, grey dress, but I’m guessing it was Gucci as well. Rita looks like she’s having a great time, but I can’t believe she’s gone ombre. Some subtle, all-around highlights would have made her hair look excellent. Her foundation/powder is also a bit too pale for her skintone, so she seems a bit ghostly.

Florence Welch in Alex McQueen at the Met Gala: whimsical or weird?

Florence Welch

Florence Welch (the British singer who fronts Florence + the Machine), went for the unusual at last night’s Met Gala. She wore an extremely embroidered (flowers?), tiered, beige Alexander McQueen gown and accessorized with matching sandals with chunky heels and a matching clutch. Overall, the dress really swallows her up, but Florence is clearly having fun with it.

I have to admire Florence’s chutzpah on the red carpet. Still, this dress looks like an upside-down lampshade, and I’m feeling terrible hints of Marchesa in the upper bodice area. That transparent stuff around the boobs? Not flattering at all.

For such a massive and complicated dress, Florence did well by styling her hair with a simple, braided updo that aims to add some much needed balance to the overall picture which is … a fluffy lampshade.

Florence Welch

Florence’s makeup appears about the same as it usually does — moderate eyeliner, harsh blush, dark red lips, and pale foundation. This look is part of her image, but she could’ve gone a bit softer for the occasion.
