Ginnifer Goodwin on extreme celebrity diets: “cocaine, cigarettes” & “scary alien cats”

wenn3096912
Big Love star Ginnifer Goodwin, 32, is defending herself from criticism after recently admitting she’s been on Weight Watchers since she was nine years old. She explained that she was heavy as a little kid and that Weight Watchers helped her lose weight safely along with other children her age. Goodwin also said that she now indulges in occasional treats but that “you don’t have to go through that horrible yo-yo cycle of binging.”

“I was so shocked when it was this whole, ‘Ginny’s been on a diet since she was 9 years old!’ I was like ‘No!’ I’ve never had body issues, I’ve never had an eating disorder,” she tells PEOPLE. “I’ve never had to go on a diet and that’s because of Weight Watchers.”

Goodwin, however, says she was an overweight child, which led her to the program. “I began to identify myself as fat.” Goodwin says. “At 9 years old I weighed about 10 lbs. less than what my weight is at 32. I needed to get help.”

“I ended up going to my mother crying,”she recalls. “With the counseling of my family doctor, my mother ended up turning to Weight Watchers and their children’s program. I went to weekly meetings, got counseling and would exercise with my peers who were my size. It was the first time I saw a proper children’s portion size, and it wasn’t two burgers, it was one.”

Losing the weight, recalls Goodwin, “was extremely easy to accomplish.” But she adds, “It takes time because you lose the weight slowly. It’s a healthy way to do it.”

And she’s kept the weight off with ease over the years. “You don’t have to go through that horrible yo-yo cycle of binging,” she says. “I’ve always been able to satisfy my cravings; it’s just a matter of balancing.”

It saddens her to see her peers struggle with weight. “I pulled an actress friend aside and I said, ‘I get it. I get what it is that you’re trying to do, but there’s being healthfully skinny and then there’s starting to look like a scary alien cat,’ ” she says.

Goodwin has a not-so-flattering name for the diet secrets of some of the rich and famous. “I call it the ‘Cocaine and Cigarettes Diet’ in Hollywood,” says the actress, who also doesn’t believe in a low-carb diet as a permanent solution. “I see girls who haven’t had a carbohydrate in three years. The second you go back to eating right, you’re going to put that weight on. You eat one piece of bread and you are screwed, lady!”

[From People]

A lot of people don’t understand how normal Weight Watchers is, and how it’s more of a healthy lifestyle than a diet. I’ve been on plenty of diets and the only one that really worked for me long term is Weight Watchers. It’s not restrictive and is basically portion control and simplified calorie counting. Whenever I fall off the wagon, like this holiday, I make sure I go back to it (I just do it online) and start counting points again. Even if I exercise like a fiend I also need to watch what I eat or I don’t keep off the weight.

Goodwin looks pretty skinny, and her fiance is almost emaciated looking. I’m sure that skinniness is relative in the circles they run in. I love what Goodwin said about how unhealthy and unrealistic it is to starve and not to eat carbs. High protein diets aren’t bad when you eat healthy carbs, like fruit, but the Atkins diet just seems like torture. You know she didn’t tell someone she looked like an alien cat, though. You say that behind someone’s back, not to their face.

Goodwin recently got engaged to her boyfriend of two years, Joey Kern, 34.

    Her ears are a bit off, but she’s cute! lol

  2. Hakura says:

    I wonder why people were so quick to criticize?

    So many children go through difficult situations regarding weight (especially these days, food everywhere), & it sounds like weight watchers is a very healthy method of getting that under control without going on a diet or binge-fest. Not to mention she consulted with a doctor as well. (There wasn’t a single aspect that deserves criticism.)

    Plus there was an advantage to learning when she was younger how to control portions…think how much easier her highschool years were as a result of being more in control of her body.

  3. brin says:

    She seems healthy in every way, a rarity in Hollywood.

  4. cici says:

    i don’t think her face is starting to look emaciated. she actually has one of those faces where in order to not “look round/puffy” she has to keep her weight really low, i think.

    and actually, more kids in america should be on weight watchers. the name is a misnomer, it’s just a correct and healthy way of eating – and america, as a whole, is not doing it.

  5. Roma says:

    I find her refreshing and honest.

    Though I’m pretty sure the diet is cocaine, cigarettes and diet coke / red bull. The damage that these girls do to their skin is going to show up hard later in life. No wonder so many young “starlets” are already using fillers and botox.

    I wasn’t even a very hard smoker but when I quit I could see a huge change in my skin.

  6. happygirl says:

    @ brin – I agree! And I like her a lot. I think she’s adorable.

  7. normades says:

    She is a lot thinner now than she was in Mona Lisa Smile. Not sure if I buy that “just weight watchers” line.

    I eat healthy carbs (lots of veggies) but if you cut down on your starches (bread, potatoes, rice, pasta) you will loose weight and lower your blood sugar.

  8. I Choose Me says:

    She doesn’t look skinny to me at all. She’s slender but with a bit of softness to her. Boyfriend looks sketchy though. He reminds me of her ex Chris Klein. *shudder*

  9. Donna Wingfield says:

    She’s so cute!

  10. Samigirl says:

    She reminds me of Peter Pan. Very cute 🙂
    And I love her fiance! He cracked me up in Super Troopers and Grind!

  11. the_porscha says:

    I love what you said about Weight Watchers, CB. I had no idea what it was all about until college, when one of my friend’s started talking about it. It really is just portion-control and exercise advice for the Everyday scenario. Perhaps Jamie Oliver should emphasize some of the principles in the children’s weight watchers program on his next food campaign – I think it would open a lot of eyes to how safe, healthy and controlled it is.

  12. Mollyb says:

    Weight Watchers is totally the way to go when it comes to sensibly losing weight because, Ginny’s right, it’s not a “diet”. You don’t ever “go off” portion control and eating junk in moderation. It’s about healthy lifestyle choices. I wanted to rejoin to lose my baby weight but it wasn’t in the budget this year, so I joined SparkPeople, which is almost exactly the same but free. It’s been working great so far!

  13. Hautie says:

    Isn’t her boyfriend the guy in that Super Troopers movie? (Or am I the only one here who laugh through that movie?)

    I agree that she looks great. And quite frankly, does not come off as preachy about how she learn to maintain her weight.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And I am about positive that her character in Mona Lisa Smile, was suppose to slightly fuller girl. A girl who had not completely lost her “babyfat” yet.
    Though pretty and rich she saw her fault as being chubby. And let that horrible Betty say awful things to her.
    Where as I would have stomped Betty’s ass. 🙂
    Yes, I have seen that movie too!
  14. KLO says:
    I applaud her mother for dealing with her weight problem while she still was a child. I had the exact same problems and it totally ruined all my teenage years, not having the support to get to a healthy weight from anyone in my family. All they did was nag at me from time to time and then I was left to deal with it all by myself. And now I’m still struggling with my weight in my twenties. It’s improving but it takes alot of time and effort to deal with it. So, way to go, Gin’s mom.
  15. Gwen says:
    She sounds very sensible to me. And she looks good too 🙂
  16. maria says:
    I don’t think she would be famous if she hadn’t been a side piece. I am happy she is spouting “healthy”, but I really don’t see her talent.
  17. LittleFATMe says:
    My whole blog is about my journey with Weight Watchers – people really don’t get it. A lot of people think that it works like a diet, and that it is a gimic like so many other things. Seriously I have to remind myself that people are all diferent and need to come to things on their own, because it has been so great for me that I get preachy!
  18. tiredofrumers says:
    i think my girl crush on her just got a little bigger with this!
  19. happygirl says:
    I think her man looks a little like Rupert Friend.
  20. orion70 says:
    Weight Watchers is what it is, and it’s only as healthy as you make it. I know people who do the points thing, except they eat nothing but an orange the whole day so they can have something deep-fried for supper. Or they fill their daily calories with “frankenfoods” and other non-fat-sugar-free-1000 ingredient stuff. WW hasn’t always been the best thing ever either, it has had many incarnations over the years, and I recall several years ago after the whole low-fat / higher carb thing, there were a lot of women who ended up with gall bladder problems.
    Admittedly, I am not familiar with their children’s program, but I hope it doesn’t encourage the whole pre-packaged WW thing either.
    Not bashing the program, as long as people are making healthy choices within it, it’s great. People have to exercise common sense within it
  21. Kdub says:
    I read more of that article and she said she works out more/is more active because of living in la. So she doesn’t just do ww.
  22. HRH says:
    I think she is gorgeous, and she’s obviously just talking about portion control and exercise. That’s not a diet at all!
  23. Nicole says:
    This is from someone who was born with the name “Jennifer” but then changed it to the atrocious spelling “Ginnifer” to stand out? Yeah…
  24. Johnny Depp's Girl says:
    Ok. I get it. but ugh..
    (sorry, Im in a bad mood today)
  25. Aries_Mira says:
    “You know she didn’t tell someone she looked like an alien cat, though. You say that behind someone’s back, not to their face.”
    Maybe it should be told to people’s faces that ultra-skinny and emaciated is not healthy or attractive.
    Oh, wait! My bad! I forgot, it’s Hollywood, and you get the roles because of how good your plastic surgeon is, your fitness trainer, your chef, and that your BMI is 10 points below where it should be.
    Edit: I DO like that Ginnifer is advocating portion control of all food, and healthy exercise.
    Just having a bad, bad, BAD day…
  26. original kate says:
    she’s really pretty and i like her as an actress. as for her weight she looks fine, not like she’s about to topple over because her head is too big for the rest of her. i have never tried WW but loads of my friends swear by it. i think as a nation our kids are too fat, so if a children’s WW program is okayed by the pediatrician then what’s the problem? letting fat kids turn into fat adults is a bad idea and sets them up for a lifetime of problems.
  27. california angel says:
    lol isnt that the guy from super troopers?
  28. Kim says:
    Shes being honest about weight loss in Hollywood and she has always been a good, healthy size – never stick thin. Shes a good role model for young girls. She isnt saying diet to be thin, in her case she had to diet to be healthy which is the case with alot of young kids these days with the crap they are eating. The cigarette cocaine diet in my day was the Diet Coke & Cigarette diet and i thought that was hideous! Now its cocaine! =( so sad!
  29. GradStudentEatingHotPockets says:
    Ha omg, I’ve never heard someone being called a “scary alien cat” but I like it…
  30. Cait says:
    She has gorgeous skin!
  31. Michelle says:
    How do you do it online? For free? I’m really interested!
  32. Celebitchy says:
    @Michelle – you do have to pay to do Weight Watchers online but they give you a month free. It can be expensive, like $48 for four months I think. If you are looking for free weight loss tools I can recommend FitDay.com and SparkPeople.com. FitDay is if you want to just count calories easily and track your weight and SparkPeople offers that along with a whole community of people, advice and recipes. FitDay is a little easier to use for calorie counting but overall both are great and free!
  33. jess says:
    @Nicole
    She didn’t change it to get attention. She’s from Tennessee. She changed it from ‘Jennifer’ to ‘Ginnifer’ because that’s how they pronounce it.
    I’m really looking forward to the final season of Big Love. I love her character and can’t wait to see her post Big Love career.
  34. Calotor says:
    The yo-yo thing is the worst that can happen and it can happen anytime.
  35. You realize thus considerably when it comes to this subject, produced me in my opinion believe it from so many various angles. Its like men and women are not interested except it is one thing to do with Woman gaga! Your personal stuffs outstanding. At all times take care of it up!
