Kaiser and I were emailing about this, and she posed the question of whether some of Amanda’s recent issues (staying for hours in a hair salon, locking herself in various bathrooms and dressing rooms) were somewhat of a put on. Crazy Days and Nights floated this theory a few weeks back. We both agree that she has serious mental issues regardless, and I thought that this was further evidence of that, until I read the details. It sounds more like a “look at me” stunt, but with Amanda it’s hard to tell. She apparently walked buck naked out of a spray tan session in search of some goggles, going up to the receptionist’s desk without a stitch on. I’ve lived places where this would be perfectly acceptable, but Amanda knows it’s something that will get people talking here in the states. Here’s the story, thanks to In Touch:
After purchasing a Mystic spray-tan session, the 26-year-old was set up in a private room — but it wasn’t long before Amanda strode back out into the main salon area in search of goggles.
Only problem: She wasn’t wearing any clothes! “She walked out of the room completely naked,” the eyewitness tells In Touch. “She didn’t seem to care that everyone saw her naked.”
“She seemed totally out of it,” the eyewitness says. “She took her time walking back to the Mystic room, dragging her fingers along the wall and smiling at customers who passed her.”
The eyewitness adds: “There was definitely something wrong with her.”
If Amanda was sitting in the lobby nekkid for a couple of hours, just applying her makeup, I would say it was a definite mental health issue, but this is something else. This suggests she knew what she was doing, but again who knows? Amanda has done a lot of things that suggest she’s troubled. At least she’s still doing “ok” somewhat, for her. I mean she’s not driving anymore and she seems to be keeping busy, what with the spray tans and the shopping. I wonder if her fashion career is going to take off at all, and if she actually is moving forward with those plans.
In response to this story, Amanda told US Weekly that it was untrue and that they should leave her along because she’s rich or something. She said “I’m not ‘troubled.’ I don’t get naked in public. I’m 26, a multi-millionaire, retired. Please respect my privacy.” So we shouldn’t talk about her because she’s retired and has piles of cash in the bank? That makes no sense. At least she’s ok after Hurricane Sandy. It must be rough in New York, even if you’re uptown.

“Mental issues” are the new and improved “drunk issues” for any fading star trying to get back in the spotlight.
Then come rehabilitation, treatment and a comedic comeback: voilà, back in the game.
Also, the way she’s behaving seems to be shaped almost perfectly on the old antics of other starlets who went through this, i.e. Britney Spears. So, I’m calling fake, at least for now.

I think you’re right. The Britney thing turned out to be mental sickness COMBINED with drugs (she shaved her head to prevent drug tests for long term drug use via the hair).
Amanda makes me uneasy, I do think there is also substance abuse happening.

I read a study about psychiatric drugs causing mental illness. So, even if you aren’t crazy when you start taking them, you may have a serious chemical imbalance after being on them a while. I agree that it sounds like a combo of mental illness + substance abuse.
There would be a surveillance tape of the nude walk, I bet. It’s surprising that no one is posting nude pics of Amanda online….if this story is true.

Do you remember who said she shaves her head to prevent a drug test? I don’t buy that. She acted very erratic after doing that too. I know someone with mental issues and she dis it too. There were too many other problems. That Sam dude made it up to bolster is now thrown out case. What does that tell you?

About why Britney shaved her head… Someone said it was so she couldn’t be tested for drugs, and the rest of the world ran with it and called it fact. It’s not fact. We don’t actually know why she did it. That is one plausible reason, but is only one among many possible, plausible ideas. Not to mention the person who said that was the reason is Sam Lutfi, who is a manipulator, criminal, and liar.

Some people say she shaved her head to escape her handlers. Brit made comments about wanting people to stop touching her and plugging things into her head. I can’t wait to see “Me at the Zoo” (movie) made by Disney star, Dan Fogleburg. It features the “Leave Britney Alone” YouTuber and Freeman breaking down mind control and stars.

That’s a fairly ignorant comment. I hope you’re joking and I’m reading it incorrectly. I have severe bipolar disorder. I also have a PhD, a tenured position at a college, a home, two kids, etc., so all bipolar people are not incapable and necessarily out of control (even unmedicated). Even when I was undiagnosed and in bad shape (and I mean BAD, BAD, BAD shape) I never went anywhere naked or went anywhere and got naked. Not only that, but it’s tough to make generalizations about people with bipolar because it presents very differently in different people. Bipolar patients experiencing psychosis *may* do that, but it’s not a “thing.” I’ve experienced psychosis three times over the last ten years and I kept my clothes on all three times.

People who are having psychotic breaks do odd things, like go naked. Glad you didn’t, but it doesn’t mean that SOME people don’t, in fact, act in inappropriate ways when they aren’t being treated for their bipolar disorder.
I have a relative with bipolar disorder. She’s a high achieving woman who has been stable for years. Does that negate the fact that many people with bipolar disorder don’t take their meds, can’t handle their illness and act inappropriately in public? No, it doesn’t.

Oddly, I had a friend who had a bad episode before getting treatment and he did in fact get naked along with doing and saying other irrational things. I don’t know how common it might be with mental illness but I certainly witnessed it first hand in this case.

Er, rather, “too bad” – far be it for any of us to delight in her misfortunes, buuuut, she reminds me of that episode of “Intervention” with the methed-out, bleach-blonde stripper girl who lived in a shack in back of her Dad’s place. She stumbled/danced around naked (inside and outside of the shack) to people and music that nobody could see and made ridiculous statements/writings that nobody else could understand, fancied herself to be quite the big deal. Not sure if this is a Lohan thing. I have no sympathy whatsoever for The Cracken – she may have addiction issues, but at many times she has had the chance to straighten up, she doesn’t seem to care about harming others – but I really feel pity for Amanda Bynes. I do think she is genuinely mentally ill with something more or other than addiction, and as someone with firsthand experience dealing with that, I really feel for her. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

@ themummy, complicated thought here, at what point do we leave people alone because they are no longer in the public eye? So many celeb types have retired, momentarily (Joaquin Pheonix comes to mind) only to re-emerge at a time of their choosing. So were they ever really gone at all?
I think that the age of the inter-webs has woefully interloped into people’s private lives, it is a massive form of bullying that we, in the privacy of our homes and the anonymity afforded by puters, can make horrible comments about people we don’t know and would be mortified if someone said them to us or to our loved ones.
So, I guess we need to evolve, to grow up, to realize that we do not own people’s behaviour, that we would fail if held up to scrutiny and often lies, but, for the time being, this is where we are.
I know that I monitor myself and don’t say things I would be ashamed of explaining to someone I respect.

You make some excellent points. At the same time, I would add that the internet has diminished (demolished?) EVERYONE’s privacy, not just celebrities. That considered, ordinary people don’t have the opportunity to cash in on their presence/lives in a way that a number of celebrities do; frequently, they are paid for appearances, photo-ops, etc.
In the curious case of Amanda Bynes, however, I think the paps are just slamming the voyeuristic cycle down everyone’s collective gullets. And yes, that’s just bullying, especially to someone who wants to be left alone in whatever condition they might be in. Sad. Guess she’ll have to console herself with her millions.

I am not sure why everybody all of a sudden feels capable to comment on the mental state of someone they have never met, based on ‘eyewitness’ reports. Are you all psychiatrists? I just don’t believe these stories. I think Ms. Bynes is a bad driver, was noticed in this regard, began being mercilessly harassed by photographers, and in response has been trying to outwait the paps when she goes shopping. Period. And then onlookers are exaggerating what they’ve seen to get their own 15 minutes of fame. Leave the damn woman alone and I’m sure her “actions” will return to normal.
