Introduction: Minutes 0 to 5:30
We’ll have an episode out next week and will be off August 28th. We will likely have less episodes in September due to the awards show. I’ve been watching The White Lotus on HBO and highly recommend it. Chandra is watching tennis. There’s a picture of the tennis player she mentioned, Casper Ruud, at the bottom of this post. You can listen below!
Dirty celebrities: Minutes 5:30 to 17:30
A couple of weeks ago Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher told Dax Shepard on his podcast that they only bathe occasionally and that they don’t wash their children until they have visible dirt on them. They also said they just rinse off and don’t use soap, which is gross. Dax Shepard said he didn’t use soap much either, and then Dax and Kristen Bell said they don’t wash their kids until they start smelling bad, which they’ve doubled down on. The low point came when Jake Gyllenhaal was promoting his partnership with Prada cologne. He told Vanity Fair he doesn’t bathe much and claimed “we naturally clean ourselves.” I got hate mail for our coverage of that, in which we told people to bathe. So many people were telling on themselves in the comments too.
Chandra’s tweet about this, which is here, went viral. Celebrities like Questlove, Jameela Jamil, Andy Richter, Roxanne Gay and Ellen Barkin retweeted it.
The Rock said he bathes three times a day while Jason Momoa promised that he keeps clean. Both Chandra and I bathe at least once a day and often twice a day. We also regularly clean our sheets. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about our childhood memories bathing. It’s white privilege to say you don’t bathe. There aren’t enough parents teaching children basic hygiene and how to clean and do laundry.
Royals: Minutes 17:30 to 25:30
Virginia Giuffre has filed a federal suit against Prince Andrew in New York for “sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress.” She’s been public with her story for years about being a trafficking victim of Jeffrey Epstein and a victim of Prince Andrew. She previously successfully sued Ghislaine Maxwell. She wants people to know what Prince Andrew did and she’s looking for justice. The Queen is protecting Andrew but Prince Charles will surely cut him off once he’s king. Prince William wants Andrew to move out of Royal Lodge because he wants to live there. William and Charles now find Andrew to be a liability and they’re said to hate his legal team.
Andrew and Fergie and their daughter, Princess Eugenie, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, are now at Balmoral with The Queen. Andrew is said to have been summoned there by his mother for crisis talks. Chandra thinks that William and Charles will find some way to “punish” Andrew and that they’ll all take credit for it. She doesn’t think he’ll get kicked out of his house. Chandra wrote a great line about that which got a lot of attention on Twitter. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about this. It’s odd that William wants Andrew’s place considering how many properties the Cambridges already have.
Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:30 to end
My comments of the week are from Driver8 and SarahCS on Hecate’s post about how cats are one of the only species who prefer free food to having to work for it.
Chandra’s comments of the week are from Molly and Beenie on the post about Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson refusing to get vaccinated.
Here’s a photo of the tennis player Chandra mentioned, Casper Ruud!
Thorough shower daily (I don’t bother about when, although I know that may get pushback – I hate getting up in the morning and cannot wake up without a shower usually, and I’m in an air-conditioned clean workplace) – twice a day if I get to it – change the sheets every couple of days/once a week at the very least (I wear socks and pajamas always, and I’m not sharing my bed with anyone else or my pet).
If I get caught in the rain and my hair smells like my shampoo when it gets damp I figure I’m good. I’m sensitive to that, lol.
Maybe Jake cleans himself like cats do and thus naturally cleans himself. Sorry, but reading about cats and cleaning oneself brought that to mind.
Thank you for this visual 😂 If my cat’s struggling to reach the eye of Mordor on purpose, you just know Jake is splashin’ his pits and calling it a (revolting) day.
@gilda, I know the visual was too much for me as well.
I know you guys saw the person who told me they can go without bathing indefinitely “basically months” direct quote, and have zero odor, because you deleted that post. But left mine up where I said look what this guy convinced himself of? I guess you took his down out of fear of this delusion spreading.
I mean, it’s delusional. Well, now I know what I’m smelling when I’m out and about anyway!
Can we discuss the finale of White Lotus? With huge spoilers of course? It seems obvious now, but I would have never predicted whose body was in that box. And the suitcase scene? Yyyyy
I wrote an article about Jennifer Coolidge that’s going up a little later today!
Oh God don’t remind me of the suitcase scene, I gagged…now want to gag again…ughh.
The not bathing thing is so bizarre, ESPECIALLY during these times. Their kids are likely in a different situation than mine but having three kiddos in daycare…omg I can’t wait to get them in the bath when they get home. Sure, whatever germs they picked up have already likely rooted, but kids in general are effing sticky and gross – if my 1 year old twins are sitting in diapers there’s no way in hell I’m not bathing them. I personally have to take my morning shower most days, but absolutely right before bed. I’m so confused by this being some badge of honor, not to mention these poor children are going to hear their parents discuss these private things with the world – your kids might not realize now what’s up, but eventually these are the kinds of disclosures that can cause serious issues down the road (looking at you Coco and Ice T!)
I will never not be surprised by the level of detail about their bathing habits so many people wanted to share with strangers.
Not bathing is white privilege? Lol.
Bathing 2-3 times a day is a privilege. Not bathing is a celebrity gimmick, like all the other woo stuff they push – crystals, vagina steaming, etc.
Agreed.
The privilege is not being pee-judged based on odour. Of if seen with a dirty shirt, thinking perhaps he went hiking, whereas, a black/brown person would be seen as nasty, or something.
I shower once a day. Before bed. And my body is slathered in an excessive amount of lotion after. If I showered twice a day my skin would fall off.
At the same time I don’t understand / am jealous of people who just don’t or don’t need to moisturizer their entire body multiple times a day.
I don’t feel right at all without lotion. Even if my body isn’t that dry that day, I can’t ever skip lotion.
If anyone needs a laugh click on the viral twitter link and scroll through the thread. Some hilarious responses. .
White privilege is not fearing what people will say or that CPS will be called if you discuss, in detail, your hygiene practices. With Kristen Bell and the gang it’s all “cute” and “quirky”, and “aren’t we hilarious and cool.” “Anyone who disagrees with us just isn’t enlightened, don’t you know soap is bad for you skin? Just not our soap. A TOAST to us!” But for Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous folks to say the exact same thing, it would be met with a very different reaction, and that’s why they are saying this is white privilege.
THIS!!!!!
