Jay-Z plays seven shows in 24 hours

Jay-Z somehow managed to play seven shows in just 24 hours, starting at 6:00 AM in Atlanta and spending 30 minutes on each stage. He took his private jet around the states, also performing in Philadelphia, Washington, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Beyonce was seen at his California show, but did not perform.

Something which might seem impossible to complete was piece of cake for one the most successful rappers of all time. Jay-Z celebrated his official return in the music business by performing a seven 30-minute-gig marathon across the US.

The star kicked off his one-day tour in Atlanta on Saturday, where Hova was scheduled to give a concert at 6 a.m., when most people haven’t eaten their breakfast. Next in line were Philadelphia, Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. The mini-tour ends up in Las Vegas on early Sunday.

Together with his staff, Jay-Z crossed the states in his luxurious private jet from city to city making the best of his return. At least 100 people were waiting outside Atlanta’s Centerstage for the first concert. There were another hundred inside already in the mood for his performance.

“First of all, y’all crazy,” Jay-Z said to the crowd before he started to play. “I know I’m already crazy. But y’all crazy.”

30 minutes later, the rapper took off in a limo escorted by police until embarking on the plane. Before 10 a.m., the plane arrived in Philly where even more fans awaited his show. The line around the Electric Factory, in the 400 block of North Seventh Street, began forming hours before the 9:30 a.m. concert.

“I wish I had got here at 5 a.m. so I could’ve been the first person in line,” said Karima Dennis, 24, a housekeeper for the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue.

“Everything went smooth,” said Keith McPhee, whose Mack Productions handled the local end of production. “Jay’s flight was only five minutes late. He loved his set, and Philly turned out. You never know, Philly being Philly.”

The trip continued and as he reached his next stop at Howard University in Washington, almost 150 students were waiting for the convoy and 1500 more looked eager to hear him sing.

“I know y’all already downloaded it … but y’all gotta go and pick up the album on Tuesday,” he said while the crowd rapped along.

Jay-Z’s new album, “Kingdom Come,” is out tomorrow. At least one reviewer says it doesn’t flow like it should and the beats are too basic, but that there are some decent tracks and Jigga is showing his maturity. Some people claim it’s not up to his old work, but that it’s still better than most of the rap that’s out now.

Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow hang out, shop, get wasted

Beyonce and Gwyneth are new BFFs, and hung out together and partied in London for Gwyneth’s 34th birthday. They shopped, went to dinner, saw Jay-Z perform, and then hit a club afterwards. Gwyneth’s husband Chris Martin even joined Jay-Z on stage during his performance at Royal Albert Hall while Gwyneth let loose and sung backup.

Beyonce - in town with boyfriend Jay-Z - teamed up for a day of shopping and partying with Gwyneth (aka Mrs Chris Martin) to mark the blonde actress’s 34th birthday. The Destiny’s Child star’s latest solo album might well have made a suitable present, as its title B’Day would suggest. The pair shared a meal at Knightsbridge Japanese restaurant Zuma. Then it was a night at Movida for the aftershow party to mark the end of Jay-Z’s UK tour, which climaxed with a sell-out at the Royal Albert Hall. It was a relatively rare night out for mother-of-two Paltrow, but it was not the first for Beyonce, 25, whose stay in London has seen her clubbing and partying with her boyfriend.

[from Beyonceworld.net]

London’s The Mirror said that Beyonce and Gwyneth talked about music and babies at the after party, but they’re making that shit up and running a story based on the photographs:

Superstar Bey and Oscar-winner Gwynnie made unlikely showbiz pals but they appeared to be getting on famously as they nattered about everything from music to babies while they sat in the corner of the VIP room. Bizarrely, Gwyn refused to have her picture taken with husband Chris Martin, saying it would “make him angry” if they were snapped together.

Throwing caution to the wind, Gwyn then ditched her macrobiotic diet and tucked into one of her two strawberry birthday cakes.

But considering the number of singers in the room - Bey, Kelis, Martin, Pussycat Dolls - the Happy Birthday song was a bit poor.

But there was a lot of love in the house - proved by England defender Sol Campbell and Jimmy Choo owner Tamara Mellon smooching all night. Earlier in the evening, Jay-Z put on a jaw-droppingly good show as he took to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall. The historic venue was packed with fans loving the king of rap’s storming two-and-a-half hour gig, complete with orchestra.

He drove the crowd wild with hits including Hard Knock Life, Izzo and Fiesta, with side-kick Memphis Bleak.

Now a regular fixture at his shows, Beyonce got up on stage to perform their duets Bonnie And Clyde, Crazy In Love and Deja Vu.

And just when you thought the show couldn’t get any better - New York rapper Nas joined Jay on stage.

Later Coldplay’s Chris got in on the act and played piano while Jay sang Dead Presidents and Heart Of The City. But it was the impromptu appearance of Chris’s missus that got one of the biggest cheers of the night.

Grabbing the mic, Gwyn provided the backing vocals to Song Cry - and happily for the audience she managed not to blub her way through it this time…

They all obviously had a great time and enjoyed themselves on Gwyneth’s birthday.

Thanks to BeyonceWorld.net for these pictures.

Update: Jay-Z was the first hip hop artist to headline at Albert Hall. He will play Paris tonight and Milan tomorrow.

“Lightweight” in the image caption above is not a literal reference to either Beyonce or Gwyneth’s weight, and just refers to the fact that Beyonce is visibly drunk in the pictures, while Gwyneth just looks tipsy.

Beyonce shows her girdle; rides public transportation

It looks like Beyonce owes her figure to more than just drinking spicy water for two straight weeks. She revealed a figure-hugging pair of pantyhose while performing on Good Morning America.

She also rode the NY City Subway to a CD signing this week. The other passengers weren’t buying it. Check out the incredulous look one woman gives her.

In an interview on the annoying woman’s talkshow, “The View,” Beyonce said that she never talks about marriage with her boyfriend, Def Jam president Jay-Z, and that she’s relieved that she doesn’t get as much gossip coverage as other celebrities.

She said, “It doesn’t drive me crazy. I understand. I was a fan of other celebrities and I wanted to know (if they were getting married). I was interested. It’s a part of my job. We’ve never talked about it and it’s kind of protected our relationship. I think it’s kind of kept us out of a lot of drama in the tabloids. Even though we’re still in them, it’s not as much as some celebrities.”

There is something to be said for the lack of drama in Beyonce’s life, which may explain why she’s not in the gossip rags as much. She’s been with Jay-Z for a while, and breakup, marriage, and career conflict stories don’t seem to phase them. They haven’t broken up or gotten engaged, so there’s not a lot to talk about except speculation.

Beyonce saturation may hurt Dreamgirls

Beyonce celebrated her 25th birthday and the drop of her inventively-titled new album, “B-Day” on Tuesday. She celebrated with a cake in her image on MTV’s “Total Request Live,” where the audience sang happy birthday to her. She also made an appearance on BET’s “106 and Park.”

The NY Daily News cites an insider who claims that Beyonce’s frenzied promotion of her album may make the pubilc tire of her well before “Dreamgirls” is released in December. What’s more, Beyonce is said to have released her album at this point because she’s not the star of “Dreamgirls” and doesn’t want a lot of competition from “American Idol” star Jennifer Hudson, who will steal the spotlight from her:

Beyoncé’s oversaturation in the marketplace has thrown a major monkey wrench in the ‘Dreamgirls’ rollout campaign,” the insider told Lowdown, claiming that her album was originally planned for next year, but Beyoncé — concerned that the film won’t be the star vehicle she’d hoped for — secretly recorded it this summer, without the knowledge of Paramount or even her manager-father, Matthew Knowles.

“It will take away from the anticipation of the ‘Dreamgirls’ soundtrack,” said my source. “She has left Paramount with not a lot of options for rolling out this film. … All her solo attention is making Paramount reposition their strategy at the last minute.”

Yesterday, a Paramount spokesman scoffed at this account, claiming, “The buzz created by the album’s release has only raised awareness of the film,” noting that Beyoncé’s “Dreamgirls” original tune, “Listen,” is on her new CD. “Paramount and DreamWorks are nothing but thrilled with Beyoncé,” the flack said…

But the insider insisted: “She rushed that album out in part because she realized she’s not going to be the one to shine in ‘Dreamgirls.’ Apparently she didn’t come to terms with the fact that the Effie White character” — played by “American Idol” contestant Jennifer Hudson — “is the focal point of the film.”

Beyonce is getting a lot of attention now, and that’s undoubtedly what she was hoping for.

She also received a lavish birthday gift from her boyfriend, Def Jam president Jay-Z. She was surprised with a 1959 Rolls Royce convertible worth over $1 million. I’m not one to look a gift horse, but doesn’t a gorgeous car seem like the kind of thing a guy would want? It sounds like Jay-Z just bought her something he really wanted. Jewelry seems more Beyonce’s style, although I’m sure she was thrilled with the car.

Here are pictures of Beyonce on TRL and 106 and Park yesterday.

Beyonce tells Jay-Z to quit Def Jam!

Beyonce is said to have told her fiance, Def Jam head Jay-Z, to quit his job! She’s reportedly jealous of Jay-Z’s very close working relationship with her rival, singer Rihanna. He helped make Rihanna a star, but Beyonce is fuming and wants him to step down as CEO:

Rumors of a romance between Jay Z and Rihanna have plagued Beyonce for months. Apparently the same rumors aren’t affecting the Def Jam CEO and his protégé - who continue to have a close working relationship. But it now appears that Beyonce has had enough. MediaTakeOut.com learned that Beyonce has given Jay Z an ultimatum - to quit his job as head of Def Jam or find a new girlfriend.

MediaTakeOut.com spoke with a Def Jam executive who claims that Beyonce is pressuring Jay Z to step down as CEO. The source tells us, “Beyonce believes that the Rihanna rumors are affecting her public image and that the only way she can stop them is to get [Rihanna] away from her man.” The source went on to explain, “[Jay Z] doesn’t know what to do - he loves Beyonce, but he loves what he’s doing at Def Jam too.”

And Beyonce’s stunning ultimatum couldn’t be worse news for the record label. Before Jay Z took the reigns as head of Def Jam, the company was in serious financial trouble. Since the arrival of President Carter less than two years ago, however, Def Jam has become one of the most successful record labels - producing 6 platinum and 4 gold albums. The hip-hop CEO also refreshed Def Jam’s roster by adding some of the hottest artists in urban music, including Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Nas, and of course Rihanna.

But according to our Def Jam insider, the biggest loser in all of this may be Rihanna. The source explained, “Jay Z has really been pushing her career, and so far it’s working … who knows if the next CEO would give her the same amount of attention.”

MediaTakeOut has a good record with getting exclusives, so this could be true. I don’t agree that Rihanna is the one who is going to lose, though. This is going to backfire on Beyonce. You never mess with a guy’s job. Jay-Z didn’t get where he is today by listening to bullshit from women telling him what to do. Beyonce is going to get called on this, and it’s not going to be pretty.

Beyonce is reportedly planning a huge wedding with Jay-Z that will take place this fall on the Island of Anguilla.

I bet Jay-Z is going to tell her to mind her own business and not to mess with his career. If he doesn’t take a stand now and actually does marry her, she’s going to try to run his life.

Pictures from BeyonceWorld.net of Beyonce performing on the Ellen DeGeneres show’s 5th anniversary premiere in New York. Look at ger whip that hair around. The episode airs on September 5th, which is Beyonce’s birthday and the day her album, “B’Day” is out. That would explain the cake.

Beyonce plans huge wedding to Jay-Z

Beyonce, 24, is reportedly planning to marry her boyfriend, Def Jam president Jay-Z, 36, in a lavish ceremony on the Island of Anguilla this November. Star reports that the reception has a $3 million price tag and that it will include $300,000 worth of caviar alone. There won’t be any Cristal at this bash:

The “Dreamgirls” star is set to wed rap impresario Jay Z, and the lavish event will come with a $3 million price tag, according to the upcoming Star.

The former Destiny’s Child member is planning a late November wedding on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, reports the tab. Guests at the bash will dine on $300,000 worth of Beluga caviar as well as lobster and Italian truffles and will wash it down with $200 bottles of Dom Perignon. Knowles’ wedding dress will be modeled after Princess Diana’s, reports the Star, and among the guests invited are Oprah Winfrey and U.N. head Kofi Annan.

An impediment to the marriage had been Beyoncé’s manager father, Matthew Knowles, and his misgivings about the 36-year-old Jay Z’s relationship with his 24-year-old daughter, but Matthew Knowles has apparently come around and given the romance his blessing.

“Beyoncé’s telling friends it will be ‘the wedding to end all weddings,’” according to the source. “Beyoncé feels like she’s living a fairy tale so why shouldn’t her wedding be equally magical?”

That’s nice that Beyonce’s father has given his blessing as she was said to have some trouble getting out from under his thumb and running her own career and life.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard rumors that these two were getting married. Back in early June Jay-Z lost weight on a high-protein diet sponsored by Beyonce. People speculated that his weight loss was a sign that he was preparing to marry the pop singer.

In late June it was rumored that Beyonce and Jay-Z were spending too much time apart and that they were breaking up, but that was only reported by a single source and the couple has been spotted out and about many times since. They even performed together at Radio City Music Hall.

Beyonce recently revealed that she has a sexy dress she puts on whenever she needs to seduce her man. She even wrote a song about it called “Freakum Dress” that will be on her new album.

Pictures of Beyonce in performance and in September’s Essence magazine are after the jump.

Beyonce and Jay-z performing at Radio City Music Hall

Jay-Z performed his whole first album, “Reasonable Doubt,” at Radio City Music Hall last night to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its release. Other artists joining him on stage included Sauce Money, Foxy Brown and Memphis Bleek. The Roots’ Amir Questlove, The Illadelphonics, and The Hustler’s Symphony Orchestra made up his band.

Jay-Z’s girlfriend, Beyonce, joined him for the last song, “Can’t Knock The Hustle,” which was originally a duet with Mary J. Blige.

Jay-Z announced his international tour, which will kick off this fall. He also hasn’t ruled out another album after declaring his retirement in 2003:

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday between rehearsals for Sunday night’s commemorative show, Jay-Z announced that he would be going on tour this fall in a jaunt around the globe — Seoul, Beirut, Dubai, Johannesburg and Sydney, to name a few stops.

“There’s a lot of places I haven’t been,” explained Jay-Z. “They’ve heard my music but they’ve never really seen me perform live. … This really makes me wanna go out and perform. I’m looking forward to going overseas.”

While fans stateside won’t likely see another Jay-Z performance for a while, they may get a chance to her some new music in the future. Though Jay-Z vowed 2003’s “The Black Album” would be his goodbye to the recorded rap game, his recent concert appearances (he staged a major show last year and has made cameos with performers like The Roots) and his guest appearances on tracks like girlfriend Beyonce’s new song have industry insiders rumbling that a new Hova album may be on the horizon.

Jay-Z does have a new album coming out. Starch blabbed that he’s working with Jigga on a new release:

Jay-Z is reportedly recording a new album with a host of his high profile Hip Hop friends.

According to the Rolling Stone the rap legend has returned to the studio even though he announced his retirement three years ago.

The new album will feature appearances from Kanye West, Scott Starch and Dr Dre who’ve all been recording tracks with him.

Starch said of the new material: “I’m working with Jay-Z on his new album. (It’s) the first time we ever really worked together. We got some fire.”

It looks like Jay-Z is recording an album after all. It also seems like he’s still going strong with Beyonce despite the breakup rumors. They had a public fight at a basketball game as reported by Page Six and Beyonce was said to be jealous of Jay-Z’s relationship with singer Rhianna. A story last week had the two breaking up due to hectic schedules and Jay-Z’s inability to commit.

Are Jay-Z and Beyonce over?

SocialRank claims to have an exclusive that Jay-Z and Beyonce are calling off their relationship due to too much time apart and too many conflicts. There was a rumor last month that they were getting married after Jay-Z lost weight on a diet supervised by Beyonce, but that was influenced by Beyonce’s own success in the dieting department and didn’t seem like a strong enough indication that they were preparing for a wedding:

New York’s hip-hop royalty couple of Jay-Z and Beyonce are ending their relationship before the walk down the aisle and anticipated stunner of the wedding dress. After months of speculation the numerous sources attached very close to the couple confirm that Beyonce has had it with Jay-Z and his immature, champagne drinking impresario image. “She wants a man, who supports her, loves her, stand by her side”, a source told SocialRank. “B is sick of him possessively trying to keep things private. She doesn’t feel enough affection or love from him”.

Jay-Z has been completely immersed with his Island Def Jam work for the last couple of months, while spending all his free time at the offices or games of New Jersey Nets. Beyonce meanwhile went to Cannes and to the Walk of Fame Induction ceremony all by herself, feeling lonely and unsupported. “Jay is obsessed with keeping basketball game scores” another very close source to the couple is saying. “Beyonce is looking to the future. Her sister Solange already has a baby. Her own parents have an amazing, fulfilling relationship and she not only wants a steady career, she wants to have tight family circle around her as well”.

The Page Six publicized basketball game fight wasn’t a first blow-out the couple has experienced lately. Private fights, ignored telephone calls, screaming arguments have been the theme of the couple’s last couple of months. “It has simply become too much”, a source confides. “Beyonce realized that two of them just might be incompatible and their relationship is really a lie they both were trying to believe in”. They came together to LA Reid’s birthday bash last week and put on the “happy couple” show. But inside out source observes. “Beyonce simply feels empty. She wants to spend this important Dreamgirls year for her with someone who understands her and relates to her a lot more”.

[via]

It sounds like they’re both too busy to spend time together, and that Jay-Z is too focused on sports and partying to settle down. That is really common and I have dated guys like that. As much as you love them, you have to move on to someone who has the same goals in life and is ready for a long term commitment.

Beyonce was said to be jealous of Jay-Z’s very close working relationship with hot singer Rhianna, but it doesn’t seem like Jay-Z and Rhianna were having more than a flirtatious friendship.

There is only a single source for this news now, so until it’s confirmed and reported all over we aren’t sure it’s true. Even if it’s spot-on, it will probably be a while before the breakup is acknowledged.

Here are Beyonce and Jay-Z taking care not to be photographed together as they leave a NY hotel on 6/12, and some candids of Beyonce in NY alone on 6/15. [via]

Jay-Z says Cristal is racist and he’s boycotting it

The hip-hop community has given Cristal champage tons of free publicity by consuming it by the case, mentioning it in songs, and opening their fridges on the MTV show “Cribs” to show chilled bottles. As a result, Cristal has become a household name:

Rapper Biggie Smalls (a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G.), who was gunned down in 1997, is believed to have been the first performer to mention Cristal. He started off elegizing Moet & Chandon Champagne, then switched to “Cristal forever” on the song “Brooklyn’s Finest” on Jay-Z’s album “Reasonable Doubt.” References to Cristal started popping up in the lyrics of Lil’ Kim, Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Jay-Z and 50 Cent. The latter has apparently launched what sounds like an inner-city sampling campaign with his hit song “Rotten Apple,” in which he’s “teachin’ the hoodrats what Cristal taste like.”

Jay-Z, who opened 40/40 last year, proposes trading his Cristal for extreme intimacy with a young woman in the video, “I Just Wanna Love You” — the camera zooms in on a designer refrigerator full of the bubbly. In another video, “Big Pimpin’,” he brandishes his drink on a yacht — just the kind of “livin’ large atmospherics” that brand managers love. (In fact, so many rap videos feature Cristal that Dr. Evil, the archrival of Austin Powers, both played by Mike Myers, did a hilarious parody of them in the movie “Austin Powers in Goldmember.”)

Critics charge that whatever the image benefits — rappers have given Cristal street credibility (and sales) that advertising could never buy

Cristal is made by Champagne producer Louis Roederer from the best grapes from 500 acres of vineyards in northern France, and is aged in oak for five years. Even in a good year, only 65,000 six-bottle cases are made; in bad years, it’s not produced at all. That happened three times during the 1990s.

That scarcity is a source of consternation for hip-hop stars who like to take Cristal along when they travel. P. Diddy spent $80,000 on four methuselahs (the equivalent of eight 750-ml bottles) of Cristal while chillin’ in St. Tropez, according to the British newspaper the Observer, and for his 29th birthday at New York’s Cipriani restaurant, he set up six free-flowing Champagne bars — the tab was $500,000. Jay-Z even takes Cristal onstage.

Such antics have an impact. New York-based Scarborough Research found that people who have attended a hip-hop concert are 77 percent more likely than the general public to buy Champagne. And a recent study by New Media Strategies, a research company in Washington, D.C., showed that 60 percent of consumers who consider themselves hip-hop fans are likely to buy products mentioned by rappers.

The managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud, expressed misgivings about rappers endorsement of his brand in a new article in The Economist, stating that he views the attention with “curiosity and serenity.” Nevermind the fact that hip hop stars are his biggest customers. He’s afraid they could damage the brand’s precious blue blood image, and said that rappers can go drink another kind of champagne:

Asked by the Economist about whether associations with rap stars could affect the marque, new managing director Frederic Rouzaud said: “That’s a good question, but what can we do? We can’t forbid people from buying it. I’m sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business.”

Powerful rap mogul Jay-Z has called Rouzaud on his snotty racist remarks and is refusing to drink Cristal or sell it at his 40/40 sports bar.

“It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the ‘Hip-Hop’ culture as ‘unwelcome attention,’” said Jay-Z. “I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life.”

The head of Cristal is such an asshole and if he doesn’t issue a retraction soon we hope the hip hop community will call an all out boycott on the drink. He’s new so maybe the board of directors or the company will fire him for making such a stupid comment. We hope Diddy will speak out next. If those idiots at Cristal don’t want all the business and free publicity then they can go back to selling the shit to country clubs and estate parties and see how their exclusive attitude makes sales tank.

Jay-Z looks skinny, may be preparing to marry Beyonce

Def Jam president Jay-Z, 36, lost 15 pounds thanks to a diet his girlfriend Beyonce, 24, put him on. He is said to be feasting on high protein meals and lots of vegetables and to have given up candy. Jay-Z’s weight loss has people speculating that the famous couple may be planning to get married:

Rap mogul Jay-Z has sparked rumours he’s planning to wed longtime girlfriend Beyonce Knowles after he shed several pounds on a strict new diet.

Former Destiny’s Child star Beyonce reportedly suggested her burly boyfriend shed a few pounds after pointing out he is 30 pounds heavier than when they started dating in 2003.

The 36-year-old has taken her comments to heart - he has already shed 15 pounds, according to insiders.

Beyonce has been focussing on her figure and probably encouraged Jay-Z to lose weight as a result. We don’t think it means that they’re preparing for marriage.

Beyonce is not one to give nutritional advice. She said that she lost over 20 pounds for her Dreamgirls role by fasting and drinking spicy water for over a week, and that she gained some of the weight back by eating a lot of fried food.

The two have hit a rought patch lately, with reports that they were fighting at a playoff game, and that Beyonce is jealous of Jigga’s very friendly working relationship with sexy singer Rhianna.

Jay-Z and Beyonce are pairing up again in the studio. They are collaborating on Beyonce’s new album, to be released on her 25th birthday, September 4th. The pair had a big hit with Beyonce’s 2003’s single “Crazy in Love.”

Jay-Z is pictured with Bill Gates, above [via] and at the 2006 Music Visionary of the Year Award breakfast on 5/24 with Daniel Glass and Antonio L.A. Reid. He is also shown on 5/22 at a NY Listening Session. He looks great.
