People: Johnny Depp & Amber Heard are ‘cooling off, there is turmoil’

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have been engaged for almost a year. During several interviews, Depp gushed over how he was itching to tie the knot ASAP. He even talked about making a hundred babies with Amber. He walked the red carpet for her films. He supported her “Rising Star” award … which was awkward because Amber’s been pounding pavement in Hollywood for over a decade. Amber also supported Johnny. She visited him on film sets, and they were nearly inseparable all summer long. Then they dropped off the radar for a few months as a couple. Fast forward to three weeks ago. Johnny attended the HFAs solo and delivered a very drunken speech. Amber was reportedly “mortified at her fiancée’s behavior.

Up until the HFAs, People was publishing PR puff pieces about how happy and low-key Amber and Johnny are together. Now People is singing a new tune:

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard aren’t in quite the hurry to walk down the aisle they once were.

Nearly a year after their whirlwind romance and surprise engagement, the couple have slowed down their wedding plans, multiple sources tell PEOPLE.

“There is no rush to marry at the moment,” says a longtime friend of Depp. “Johnny is crazy in love with Amber, but there is turmoil in the relationship.”

At 28, Heard has established herself as a free spirit who is on the record about everything from her skill with a .357 Magnum to her bisexuality. She is also 23 years younger than Depp, a factor in their relationship challenges.

“Amber flirts and has many different kinds of relationships,” the source says. “She is not really ready to settle down.”

For his part, Depp recently raised eyebrows with a rambling appearance at the Hollywood Film Awards in November. And he told Details that his busy career has him racing at a “schizophrenic” pace: “It’s been insane.”

[From People]

Yep. I can easily believe that Amber is rethinking this marriage. This hasn’t worked out as planned. Johnny could score her a sweet set trailer, but he can’t make her the next Action Jolie. Beyond that, Amber is still young at age 28. She doesn’t need to tie herself to a 51-year-old Scarf Monster who’s the physical embodiment of a mid-life crisis. That sounds harsh, but Amber can do better.

    Shocker.

    Breakup announcement in 3….2…1….

  3. jinni says:

And Johnny doesn’t need a leech that’s just a no talent famewhore whose only relevancy comes from being his girlfriend. He deserves better.

This makes me happy for him, hopefully he continues to remove all the toxicity in all it’s forms from his life. This break up is an excellent first step towards getting himself together.

    • Kitten says:

Yes. Except they haven’t broken up yet.

      • jinni says:

Hopefully by Friday ( the day most celebs release info they’d rather not have the tabs put in their mags) we’ll here from one of their people about an official break up. Or Amber will make sure she’s papped without her engagement ring sometime soon. Knowing Johnny, he probably won’t officially confirm until he’s asked in his next interview.

      • Kitten says:

That would probably be a good thing for both parties.

    • Artemis says:

He had better and he let it go. He clearly does need this ‘leech’ otherwise he wouldn’t have started dating her. He’s at an age were he’s smart enough to make his own decisions, if he doesn’t think he ‘deserves better’ than why are you attacking the GF? Also, it’s Heard who’s pulling away it seems.

      • jinni says:

IMHO, I think of her as a leech because I see her as someone that has wormed their way into the life of someone during a vulnerable time in their life and has used them. Unlike many here I don’t see him as having a mid-life crisis, but as someone that is struggling with depression and has fallen back on old bad habits to deal with it. Anyone that has read his interviews in there entirety, not just snippets posted here and there, would be able to see that it’s so much more than him worrying about his age.

This is a guy that has said he used alcohol to “calm the circus in my head”, has a history of cutting and other self destructive behavior. I wouldn’t be surprise that he got with her knowing that she cared nothing for him because this relationship is just another way for him for him to destroy himself and doesn’t believe he deserves to be with someone that actually gives a damn about him because he doesn’t give a damn about himself.

Look I’m not trying to blame her for his behavior, just that she is an opportunists and I personally don’t care for people who take advantage of others that are in a vulnerable state.

Also, if Amber could do so much better than why did she stick around? She would have left him the minute a bigger fish showed interest so she obviously can’t do any better than him, but he sure can do better than her.

      • someonestolemyname says:

Exactly I don’t get the attack on her and I don’t see how she is a leech. She had a career and work before Johnny, that’s how she met him, doing a film with him.
I don’t get how some say the girl has no talent, she is not a bad actress at all.

It’s not her fault Johnny went sort of middleage crazy.

She’s the one smartly pulling away, if she can see it’s not working, better move on now, then marry and make a bigger mess later.
Johnny is drinking lately and if Amber can see now it’s not working, then best to move on.

      • someonestolemyname says:

I don’t see how she’s a leech, if she really wanted to leech and famewh0re, she’d stay put and marry him and ride on his connections for years as his wife.

Johnny is no kid, he made choices too here.

      • jinni says:

@someonestolemyname: Well someone down thread said she’s in talks for a role in The Danish Girl, throw in her role in The Addrerall Diaries with Franco and her part as main love interest to Tatum in Magic Mike 2, she may think that she no longer needs him since she’s up for parts in something other than straight-to- DVD/ movies no one saw, like she was before she got with Depp. So that maybe why she’s not going down the aisle since his usefulness to her has run its course.

Also where am I trying to make JD appear like a child? I don’t see how my opinion that he is in a vulnerable state means I’m calling him a child; adults can be vulnerable, too. Also, I know he makes his own decisions which is why I said I’m not blaming her for his crappy behavior.

      • FLORC says:

        Someonestole

Amber has a long history of being tryhard. She would cast her childhood and top education aside and bill herself as a hot, bisexual blonde who loves tuning up muscle cars. Her acting has never been all that great either. And when she got Depp her entitled behavior was let out to spread its wings.

Should they break up I can see her riding the wave of PR, but after that she’ll need to find someone else because on her own merit she can’t get a decent role.
She might just be defined as the girl who was with Johnny Depp.

And she met Johnny during his midlife crisis peak. I can’t believe she didn’t have a hint at that. Plus the kids and a spouse.

And Someonestole. This will get snarky, but I don’t mean to be because I truly enjoy your comments.
What roles was she good in?
And Johnny hasn’t been in a decent movie for some time (imo). That means when they met she still wasn’t getting a decent role. The rum diaries was a rough watch.

      • Hmmm says:

He obviously needs a hot blonde armpiece PR girlfriend, old enough to be his daughter, to boost his image. He is just another apathetic Hollywood star who can’t age gracefully. Blech!

    • JenniferJustice says:

I take it the opposite. It’s pretty sad when a C-lister can’t withstand Depp’s antics. That goes to show she isn’t willing to sell her soul for a career. I actually have a new-found respect for her. Now that she’s no longer star-struck, she’s figured out he’s immature, kooky, and lacking in priorities by doing whatever he wants even when he has responsibilities. That’s not attractive. That’s a spoiled child.

    • pirategirl says:

I’m with Jinni, I think the same. Amber is looking for the next best thing, lots of rumors in Hollywood (which are just rumors, who knows), of her hooking up with others both female and male. I don’t think she really cares he got drunk in public, maybe her team put that story out there to cast her in better light for when they do officially break it off.

    • Veronica says:

Even if her motivation for dating him is the career boost, what’s the problem? Are we going to pretend that a 51 year old man starts screwing a young woman because he has no underlying emotional agenda of his own? Am I really supposed to buy that these women are manipulative wenches and that the older men they’re with lack agency or any sort benefit from being with them?

The relationship is a sham, but I don’t see why she should be shamed for it when his reasons for being there are just as embarrassing. Particularly because he’s too old to pretend like he doesn’t know better.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“Am I really supposed to buy that these women are manipulative wenches and that the older men they’re with lack agency or any sort benefit from being with them?”

I agree. I think it is part of a patriarchal society. If you are looking superficially at the relationship and making assumptions, they are both using each other (her for career, him for her youth and beauty).

      • Anne says:

Oh, STRONG point. Well said Veronica, well said.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I don’t know if he deserves better. He’s a mess and she isn’t. When she starts getting plastered on stage, then maybe I will think she is beneath him. He isn’t his former self. Modern day Johnny is hanging pretty low.

    • Jen says:

Sounds like somebody has a thang for Johnny.

  4. Abbott says:

I don’t know what she expected when she agreed to marry the whiskey soaked pile of Anthropologie accessories.

  5. sarah says:

He is a washed up cliche. Grandpa Jack needs to retire after Pirates 6.

  6. She’s hot, but that’s really ALL she’s got going for her. I mean, she’s a worse actress than Jessica Biel. Jessica Biel just exists for me in a movie, Amber actively ruins the movie for me. I will say that the best acting Amber ever did was in Rum Diaries with Johnny–they were very sexy together, so I can see the attraction.

But yeah….Johnny doesn’t seem to be doing so well these days. And if he is an alcoholic, beyond the jokes about her golddigging her way up, no one should have to put up with that. It’s soul sucking. Who knows what kind of crap Johnny’s said to her, especially if he’s a mean drunk? I’ll never forget my grandma screaming at my dad (while drunk) that she was going to spend time with her REAL family–meaning that when she married my grandpa, she gained three stepchildren (at the age of six), along with her ‘own’ daughter, who all called her ‘Mom’, and treated her like their mom for over thirty years, until she decided to become an alcoholic for a living and decide that her REAL child is the only one that mattered (at the moment). Including her REAL grandchildren (hint: not me).

    • cr says:

I admit to feeling a bit sorry for both of them, I think she did like him/love him, even though though there is definitely the aspect of her using the relationship to get more fame/opportunities.
But he appears to have been backsliding on his drinking, and even if I don’t really like her she doesn’t need to put up with it.

      • Completely agree–I do think that she was calculating, at least in part, of WHY she became engaged to him (after all of those ‘I don’t want to talk about how I’m engaged to Johnny Depp’ interviews), but I always got the feeling that they were a good match. I saw some interviews of her with Rum Diaries, where she was talking about how in love she was with the (vintage) car she drove, how she loved cars, etc. I think she’s a little (VERY) tryhard, but I could actually see her and Johnny together. Like they aren’t Leonardo Dicaprio/whatever model he’s got his arm grossness…

      • Kitten says:

I think she’s young and she enjoyed the attention (who wouldn’t?) but I’m not sure she’s really in love with him.

She is a very mediocre actress.

      • FLORC says:

I bet he needed to cling to someone and she got swept up in the luxury of it all.
I’m a firm believer love grows with time. You can only know if the foundatin is there at “first sight” and build from there.
There was heat and passion here. Not longterm love. But hey! I’ve been proven wrong. If she helps him shape up and sticks it out i’ll eat my tinfoil hat,

      • @FLORC
Exactly. I do think that they have some things in common, but it was mainly sex, passion, and fun that held them together. And yes, I will EAT IT if she stays with him. I don’t think she will–for whatever reason you want to name, whether its because she’s a golddigger or because she can’t take it anymore.

      • FLORC says:

        VC
We’ll have a hat eating party!

I bet the fun times were starting to wear at her. She wanted to get on her career. It was nice at the start, but after the hosting drunk incident maybe some shame sank in. His apathy to her feels fuels a seperation. I’m just guessing though I would not be shocked if it played out that way.

    • someonestolemyname says:

I think he acting is fine. She was working before Johnny and getting roles and imo there is nothing wrong with her acting.

  7. Jegede says:

But how can she do better?

She only started scoring big time mag covers, MET Gala invites and recognition because of Johnny.

She tried everything else, and it sure wasn’t her filmography or TV shows that were getting her attention.

Johnny is on a downturn spiral so I guess its the exit for someone else that can benefit Amber

    • Abbott says:

She misjudged how much his stock was worth. Reminds me of Miranda Kerr and Legolas.

      • captain hero says:

        Yes! This exactly

      • lucy2 says:

That’s exactly what I was thinking too. I don’t think she realized the downward slide he’s been on, and thought he’d propel her to instant stardom. It hasn’t happened, so now there’s “problems” and she was never really ready to settle down. Sure.

“She is also 23 years younger than Depp, a factor in their relationship challenges.” Same age difference they had when they met, got together, got engaged…suddenly a problem now?

      • Anne says:

I don’t think her relationship with him is pure opportunism, I’d guess genuine, personal attraction played a role as well. If it’s not working, I just hope she gets out before committing herself.

    • Talie says:

Johnny will always be A-list, but he’s not as a hot as he once was — mostly from his own whacked out antics. She’d probably prefer to score someone like Leo, but that ain’t happening. If Channing Tatum wasn’t married, I’m sure she would’ve tried on Magic Mike.

    • someonestolemyname says:

She doesn’t need to do better, she just needs to be happy and if life with Johnny is not making her happy, then more power to her for getting out.
Amber will be just fine and I love Johnny Depp but he just needs to sort himself out for awhile.

    • Etheldreda says:

I was going to say the same thing. Amber is 28 – practically middle-aged for a woman in Hollywood – and hasn’t got much to boast of on her CV. Sure, she’s pretty, but very generically so — there are literally thousands of young women in Hollywood with the same kind of bland blonde looks. So scoring a major – if over the hill – star like Depp was a major coup for her. If it hadn’t been for him, she’d be just another blonde competing with all the others.

Obviously, the important thing in any relationship is that you love the other person and that he/she makes you happy. But if we’re talking about ‘strategic’ Hollywood relationships, I highly doubt that Amber could do ‘better’ than Depp.

      • Anne says:

He has brought her attention, but I don’t see her career taking off, do you? When I first noticed her (pre-Depp), I thought her style and energy seemed like a new Sharon Stone. I thought she might be big. She just doesn’t seem to hold my attention, though. I haven’t seen any of her films.

  8. Anony says:

Why huge age gaps generally don’t work: the couple are rarely at the same point in their lives/careers to converge.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1

    • someonestolemyname says:

      EXACTLY!

    • PennyLane says:

Exactly – two people who are meet and are at the same place at the same point in time, but are really on different trajectories, can have a few good years together – however when life starts to really happen (aging, illness, etc.) the cracks in the relationship show up very quickly and these big age difference relationships have a tendency to break up.

Also I read once that a lot of younger women who marry much older men are looking for a ‘Daddy’ figure to provide for and protect them, and when these men start to age and become vulnerable, i.e. human, and need help and care this can be devastating to the woman’s sense of how the world is supposed to work…so she walks.

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I hope for her sake that they break up. I hope he gets some help.

  10. don't kill me i'm french says:

Johnny,go in rehab now! For your family, for your career and before all for YOURSELF!

  11. aenflex says:

He’s a mess, for sure. But she’s nothing special either. They probably both could do better. The relationship was a jump off for him anyway, and those rarely last.
Personally, I hope Vanessa is the one who laughs last.

    • Anne says:

It strikes me as a jump-off, too. But – if it is – what on earth is he thinking by asking her to marry him and saying he wants kids with her?

  12. Luca76 says:

This seems to be a Faustian deal that only worked out in Vanessa’s favor. 😊

  13. Calcifer says:

Amber Heard has always struck me as obsessed by fame and status (rather than as a simple gold digger). Ironically, a breakup from Johnny Depp might be the very thing that could finally really make her famous. I have the impression that Johnny has never been left by any of his women, he was always the one doing the leaving. Being the only one strong enough to leave HIM might raise Amber’s profile and mark her as an exceptionally independent woman who places her freedom before all the perks that being Depp’s significant other brought her. I also think that she is smart enough to know this and to make use of it.

    • Luca76 says:

I honestly don’t think anything will raise her profile. She’s just so utterly lacking in charisma when they breakup people will go back to not knowing who she is and magazines will stop trying to suck up to Johnny through her. Also leaving a 50 year old Johnny Depp won’t be a big deal like it would have been when Johnny Depp was still one of the hottest men on the planet.

    • Talie says:

True. Never seems like he gets left… she’d probably still like to get a few more parts before she leaves him for good though.

      • jinni says:

I believe Winona (with a big push from her parents) broke their engagement and left him. Which is why he went so off the rails after they broke up. So, he has been left behind.

    • Calcifer says:

I should add to my earlier comment that not only does Amber Heard seem fame hungry to me, she also strikes me as someone who likes to scheme and spin situations to her advantage. Remember how she told in an interview earlier this year that she habitually feeds false rumors to her friends in order to see who can and who cannot be trusted? If I look at the way the ‘source’ from People Magazine describes the current situation (“Amber flirts and has many different kinds of relationships,” the source says. “She is not really ready to settle down”), it really makes me wonder who this information is coming from. Amber herself maybe? Trying to make herself look more independent?

      • someonestolemyname says:

If Amber was as Fame Hungry as some would like to believe, she’d stay and have married him.

I don’t get why she gets all the backbiting, Johnny is a 50 year old man with his OWN Mind.

      • Calcifer says:

        @someonestolemyname
I am not saying that she is an intrinsically bad person for being fame hungry and let’s say ‘active and strategic about her PR’. And maybe she will stay with him after all. I for one have always had the feeling that she IS actually enamored with him, though maybe just as much with the name recognition and opportunities he can bring. She was very young when she fell for him, so maybe her attraction for him is a mix of selfish motives and genuine love, which isn’t unusual. I do get the feeling that she is unusually ambitious though.

      • FLORC says:

        Someone
Well, they haven’t seperated as far as we currently know.

And imo Amber could gain more by seperating with Depp. PR wise it could be spun to her benefit as Depp spirals out of control. Acting aside her name will be everywhere! And even if people aren’t actually familar with work they will know her name. Happens all too often.

      • Minnie1 says:

Amber leaving Johnny as he spirals out of control could also be construed as her not really caring about him , or the kids, enough to help him. It’s rather callous to dump the man you gushed about to the world when he needs your support the most. If she has as much influence with him as has been implied, she could get him into rehab in a heartbeat. Maybe she has already found her next partner, and simply wants out–this story might be the thin edge of the wedge.

    • A. Key says:

Except that prior to Heard, Johnny’s dated true celebrities and really famous women. Like Kate Moss and Winona Ryder. Actually Vanessa was the least famous one. And Amber ranks way below her.
If they break up now she’ll go back to being a total nobody no one cares about. A once-it-girl who used to date a celebrity.
Meanwhile, he’ll continue to be Johnny Depp. Love him or hate him, he’s a certified superstar, and she’s a forgettable face dating a superstar.
Don’t see how breaking up with him would help her in the long run.
Unless she gets pregnant first. Which is why Vanessa remained so relevant.
I’m fairly certain if Paradis had never gotten pregnant with 2 kids, Depp would have never stayed with her for so long. Nor would the papers care today about her.

      • jinni says:

Well Vanessa did and still has a pretty successful career in Europe, especially France. But, yes, the US papers wouldn’t have paid attention to her if she weren’t with Depp. And the only reason why the US tabs care about her new relationship with Biolay is because of the JD connections.

Also, if Amber isn’t able to parley her next upcoming movies into some kind of public interest in her as an actress than she will end up a footnote on JD’s “Who Dated Who” page and nothing more.

      • lrm says:

Well, maybe Depp wanted children. People seem to often say ‘she got pregnant’ like it was her evil plot or something ….lol.
Vanessa Paradis was already a star in france. She purposefully chose not to crossover to american popularity/fame. She preferred to stick with her french base. She did live with lenny kravitz in LA for awhile-so she was not new to the scene and she is not just a model, but a successful actress and pop singer. She could have easily cashed in on her connections or union with Depp. So it’s weird that people imply he was only with her b/c she had his kids. True, they may have split sooner without kids, but that’s not to say SHE would have wanted to stay. Maybe she would have left Depp sooner, as well???? In any case, Heard is definitely interested in fame and is ambitious, IMO. She doesn’t want to just be a rich wife or mother of depp’s kid. She wants her own legitimate fame and success.

      • Anne says:

“Don’t see how breaking up with him would help her in the long run.”

That’s a purely strategic look at career success, which I get. But, that’s not the only part of happiness. If the relationship isn’t working, it could be very difficult for her to stay with it.

    • Alice says:

Kate Moss left him, he’s said so himself. Vanessa kicked him out over his drinking and disappearing for days on end with no contact when he was supposed to be available for the kids. Winona left him.

He’s been dumped a lot actually.

  14. Because he’s had a past history of having issues with drugs and alcohol–re: his life before Vanessa.

    • maddelina says:

That pretty goes for anyone in HW. Many have substance abuse issues. I think the age gap is a factor.

  15. Tiffany says:

That blue purse. I, want. Anyone know the brand.

  16. Racer says:

Johnny can do no wrong in my eyes. I’m ready for Amber to be the girl we once Heard of. She brings nothing to the table.

  17. Emmyb says:

The only thing I have to say is… In the last picture, it looks like his hat has a little face on it.

  18. kri says:

Wow. Who would ever have thought we would come to see the line’She could do better than johnny Depp”. Man, that is saaaaaddd. WTF, Johnny? Get it together. Meanwhile Vanessa is looking happy and effortlessly cool, as usual.

  19. bns says:

If she leaves him he’ll lose it. He’s a serial monogamist and one of those people that can’t be single.

  20. scout says:

Get out while you still can girl!! Man is going through severe midlife crisis, not a good time to be around.

  21. Ashley says:

Well Amber just got a major supporting role in the movie The Danish Girl. That is a movie that has attracted alot of top shelf actors so it will be intersting to see where her career goes. I wouldn’t say she’s a bad actress though maybe just hasn’t had an amazing role.

  22. Mari says:

Never saw them lasting past the “honeymoon” phase anyway.

    Scarf Monster 😀

  23. nan says:

Considering where they both are in their lives, how is it bad news that they’re not getting married?
( plus Johnny looks old enough to be her father, eww).

  24. A. Key says:

“Amber can do better” — Frankly, so can he!

  25. capepopsie says:

    Oh no! Clutching Pearls!

  26. JenniferJustice says:

The tattered hats kill me! Here’s a 51-yo man, ripping a new hat to make it look old -totally ridiculous.

    • Chris says:

That’s how we know she doesn’t love him. Would you let someone you love wear that hat? Those “scarves” that are more like rags?
Those G-d damned bracelets? No! No one would let someone they love do that. It would be “listen, you know I love you style, but let’s try this: shower and put on a suit”.
I don’t think Depp has a friend in the world right now.

  27. Penelope says:

I like Johnny and still find him quite hot but that tattered hat is just too silly.

  28. Meow says:

    Amber, luv, burn his hat.

  29. Kim1 says:

Didn’t People magazine publish a pre breakup story a few months before he broke up with Vanessa? So she is flirting with men and women on the Magic Mike set? Poor Johnny ,she drove him to drink.

  30. Meg says:

I never thought they’d get married. odd that he was dating a woman for 14 years and never got engaged but after months with a girl he got engaged? It was clearly a publicity stunt for her-people who didn’t know her name now know it because of her attachment to him. she wasn’t just his girlfriend, one of many who come and go so no point in bringing it up in interivews- she got engaged to him. for sure will be discussed in interviews.

  31. Florence says:

I know this will be an unpopular view but I kinda feel sorry for Amber. I think he was smitten by her. She, not so much, or not at all, and rejected his advances initially but found it far too difficult to turn down all that money and power but you can see clearly it’s not made her happy in any way

Johnny had substance abuse issues even before/during his time with Vanessa

  32. vya says:

No she can’t. This is probably the best thing she’ll be known for.
