Redford and Newman sent a wrecked Porsche back and forth to each other

Redford and Newman in November, 2006

Beloved late screen star and philanthropist Paul Newman has been honored by many celebrities who worked with him and whose lives he touched. His co-star and best friend Robert Redford, 72, spoke with ABC News about his long and enduring friendship with Newman. He spoke of his dear friend in the present tense. Redford talked about how Newman loved his own jokes, even if they were crappy, but said his laughter was contagious and it didn’t matter how bad the joke was.

He told some stories about the pranks they used to play on each other, including one time he got a trashed Porsche and had it sent to Newman as a gift for his 50th birthday. He had the car wrapped with a ribbon and put on Newman’s back porch. Redford said that Newman used to bug the shit out of him talking about racing and he sent him the car as a reference to that.

Redford said he didn’t hear anything from Newman for a couple of weeks, but then he saw a big box sitting in his living room that was so heavy it dented the floor. Newman had sent the Porsche back to him in a box after he had it compacted.

Redford then contacted a sculptor he knew in Westport, CT where they both lived at the time and had the Porsche sent to her to make into a garden sculpture. He then hired a towing company and had the transformed Porsche towed back to Newman’s garden.

He said that “to this day, neither of us had ever spoken about it. Never acknowledged it.”

Redford currently lives in Sundance, Utah, but he used to live about a mile away from Newman in Connecticut with his family.

Here’s a link to the video of Redford talking about Newman and here’s a link to the transcript if you’d rather read it.

More photos, videos and tributes to Paul Newman

Note: I wrote the article below before I realized that MSat had already covered Paul Newman’s death. He was an incredible actor and someone who touched so many people’s lives and we are posting this in his honor.

Hollywood legend Paul Newman passed away Friday at his home in Westport, Connecticut after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 83. Newman appeared in over 60 films in six decades and was nominated for an Oscar 10 times. He won the best actor Academy Award in 1986 for
The Color of Money under director Martin Scorsese.

A war veteran, philanthropist, devoted family man, and car racing enthusiast, Newman lived life to the fullest and will long be remembered for his impact in Hollywood and on humanitarian causes. He founded the food company Newman’s Own in 1982, which has gone on to become a multi-million dollar empire with a spinoff, Newman’s Own Organics, run by his daughter, Nell Newman. All the profits from both companies are donated to charitable and educational causes. Newmans Own has contributed over $250 million to charity to date.

Newman leaves behind a wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward, five daughters and eight grandchildren:

Paul Newman, a screen hero for more than half a century and the head of a philanthropic food empire for the past 25 years, has died, it was announced Saturday. He was 83.

Surrounded by his family and close friends at his farmhouse near Westport, Conn., Newman succumbed Friday after a long battle with cancer, according to a statement from publicist Jeff Sanderson.

Famed for his intense blue eyes, his love of car racing and one of the coolest demeanors ever to heat up the silver screen, Newman was nominated for Oscars ten times.

But perhaps his proudest accomplishment, besides his 50-year marriage to actress Joanne Woodward, was starting Newman’s Own, which since 1982 has made popcorn, spaghetti sauce, lemonade and salad dressing and has donated more than $250 million to charities selected by Newman himself.

Career Highs
With more than 80 films and TV productions to his credit, Newman’s career spanned generations. His first Oscar nomination was in 1959 for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and his most recent was in 2003 for Road to Perdition.

The son of a sporting goods storeowner, the Ohio native enrolled in Ohio’s Kenyon College after his 1946 discharge from the Navy. He married for the first time in 1949, then moved wife Jackie and their young son Scott east, where Newman attended the Yale Drama School and, later, the New York Actors Studio.

Dramatic TV roles came his way, but it was his Broadway debut in 1953, as the sexy stranger in Picnic, that led to a Warner Bros. Hollywood contract and his first movie – the 1954 toga epic The Silver Chalice, which even he considered one of the worst movies ever made.

Still, the looker more than redeemed himself in two screen adaptations of Tennessee Williams dramas, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof costarring Elizabeth Taylor, and Sweet Bird of Youth, with a highly charged Geraldine Page.

In 1957, Newman and Jackie, with whom he also had two daughters, divorced. The next year, he married Woodward, with whom he eventually had another three daughters.

By the ’60s Newman had hit his stride with such career-defining roles as the leads in The Hustler, Hud and Cool Hand Luke. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, followed by The Sting, made him and screen partner Robert Redford the hottest male stars of the ’70s.

Newman won an Oscar for The Color of Money, in 1987. Exactly 20 years later, he announced his retirement from acting, saying, “I’m not able to work anymore … at the level that I would want to. You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention.”

Among his final roles was the voice of Doc Hudson in the 2006 animated movie Cars.

[From People.com]

Paul Newman founded the “Hole In The Wall Gang” summer camps in 1988 for seriously ill children. The camps are now running in over 12 locations worldwide. He loved to visit the children, according to his daughter, Nell, who said that he hoped they would become his legacy.

I used to live near Westport and had the pleasure of seeing Joanne Woodward speak at an event I attended there several years ago. She came across as very down to earth and earnest, and you can just imagine how much Paul meant to her. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. He was an incredible man who left a vast legacy on the screen and, more importantly, in life.

Paul Newman discusses his retirement and “Hole In The Wall” camps:

Paul Newman talks to David Letterman in January, 2007, about going out to race. (This is just a segment, here’s a link to the full interview)

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward talk about their Las Vegas wedding:

James Dean and Paul Newman screentest for East of Eden, which was out in 1955. How cute are these guys?

Screen legend and humanitarian Paul Newman passes away

Sad news: Paul Newman has lost his long battle with cancer at the age of 83. Newman was a screen icon with dozens of classic films to his credit, as well as an avid humanitarian. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, their six children and eight grandchildren.

Paul Newman has died at age 83.

He passed away after a long battle with cancer Friday at his farmhouse near Westport, Connecticut. No other details were available.

In a statement, Robert Forrester, vice-chairman of Newman’s Own Foundation, said: “Paul Newman’s craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.

“Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one’s life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance.”

Born in Ohio in 1925, the actor rose to fame in such roles as The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in which he starred opposite Robert Redford.

He was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning for 1987’s The Color of Money and taking home two honorary ones.

Newman was also known for his philanthropy. He created the Newman’s Own brand of organic foods and donated the company’s profits to charity.

“What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company,” Forrester said in a statement. “And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million.”

He also founded the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for children with serious illnesses. Said Forrester: “Today, there are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Through the Camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be.”

Newman is survived by his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, 78. The couple celebrated their golden anniversary in January. He is the father of six children and eight grandchildren.

Newman never confirmed reports that he was battling cancer. In June, as rumors swirled about his illness, his pal (and neighbor) Martha Stewart wrote, “He is still full of vim and vigor, he is still Cool Hand Luke to me, and of course, my Butch Cassidy!”

Newman announced he was retiring last year.

“I’m not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to,” he said on Good Morning America. “You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that’s pretty much a closed book for me… I’ve been doing it for 50 years. That’s enough.”

Newman had said he’d like to be remembered as “a guy who tried, tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn’t complacent, who doesn’t cop out.”

[From Us Weekly]

Newman was nothing short of a class act from the very beginning of his career. His All-American good looks and bright blue eyes garnered lots of attention, but he quickly proved that he was more than just a pretty face. His acting career spanned more than 50 years, boasting such films as “The Verdict” (one of his bast, in my opinion), “Hud” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Despite the accolades and A-list status, Newman kept his personal life private. Even as he battled cancer, he worked to keep the severity of his condition from the media. His 50-year marriage to actress Joanne Woodward is a definite inspiration and an anomaly in a town where famous couples are lucky to last a couple of years.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Picture note by JayBird: Paul Newman is shown in the header image with his wife, Joanne Woodward. Here are some pictures of Newman throughout his career.

Travis Barker and DJ AM in critical condition in burn unit after fatal plane crash

Musician Travis Barker and celebrity DJ Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ AM, were among the surviving passengers in a private learjet which crashed taking off from a South Carolina airport Friday night. Both Barker and Goldstein are in critical condition in the burn unit of an area hospital. Four other passengers were killed, but their names have not yet been released. Barker and Goldstein were performing along with Perry Farrell, best known as the former lead singer of the band Janes Addiction, and Gavin DeGraw. It is not yet known whether Farrell and DeGraw were on the plane. (Update: according to various accounts, both Farrell and DeGraw are fine and were not on the plane.)

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and a popular disc jockey were critically injured in a Learjet crash in South Carolina that killed four people, authorities said Saturday.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane went off a runway and crashed on a nearby road, she said.

Hospital spokeswoman Beth Frits said Barker and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were in critical condition at a burn center in Augusta, Ga., about 75 miles southwest of Columbia.

NBC News reported that Barker, who also starred in MTV reality show “Meet the Barkers”, had performed Friday night at an event alongside Perry Farrell, the former Jane’s Addiction singer, as well as Gavin DeGraw and Goldstein.

‘Terrible and tragic’
It was not clear whether Farrell and DeGraw were also traveling with Barker and Goldstein.

Federal officials confirmed that two crew members and two passengers were killed in the crash.

“It’s absolutely terrible and tragic,” Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

Bergen said the Lear 60 was headed to Van Nuys, California. She was unable to confirm the names of those on board.

Barker and Goldstein perform together under the name TRVSDJ-AM.

[From MSNBC]

This is awful news and our hearts go out to their families and to those who lost their lives. Part of me hopes that Farrell and DeGraw were not on the plane, but it’s a tragedy no matter who died in that accident.

We’ll have to stay tuned to this story and see if more information is available.

Update: Here is a photo of the crash and more information from the local news source, WLTX. The plane crashed into an embankment when taking off, and then caught fire. Baholicious notes Perez Hilton says Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw were not on the plane, but that has not yet been confirmed. There were two passengers and two crew members who perished in the crash:

An airport spokesperson says a lear jet–a small, private passenger plane–crashed just after take off a little before midnight Friday.

At this time, it appears the plane was attempting to take off, ran off the runway, through a fence, and hit an embankment along Highway 302. The plane then caught fire, and airport emergency crews are working to put out the blaze.

Six people were aboard the airplane. It’s believed four people are dead, and two were taken to the hospital.

CBS News has confirmed that Travis Barker, a drummer who once was a member of the rock bank “Blink 182″, and D.J. AM, who’s real name is Adam Goldstein, were aboard that plane, and survived. They have been taken to the hospital for treatment at the Augusta Burn Center, and they both are in critical condition.

Barker and Goldstein were in Columbia Friday night as part of a concert in Columbia’s Five Points.

Update 2: TMZ is reporting that Perry Farrell was not on the plane. Hopefully Perez Hilton was right and Gavin DeGraw wasn’t on the plane, either.

Update 3: Gavin DeGraw wasn’t on the plane, according to his rep, quoted in People.

The other two passengers who died are said to be males, while the two crewmembers were a female pilot and a male co-pilot.

Update 4: TMZ reports that the pilot and co-pilot have died, Sarah Lemmon and James Bland, along with another male passenger, Charles Still, and Travis Barker’s assistant, Chris Baker, 29, (no relation) who was featured on his reality show Meet the Barkers. Baker had a wife and baby at home.

Barker and Goldstein escaped by opening the door of the plane and jumping out right after it crashed and was already on fire. Barker is said to be burned from the waist down and it is thought that he will survive. Goldstein has suffered serious burns to his face.

Travis Barker and DJ Am are shown at the MTV Movie Awards on 9/7/08

Don LaFontaine, the “In A World” guy, died

Deep-voiced legend Don LaFontaine, best known for his trademark “In a World” voiceovers on movie trailers, has passed away at the relatively young age of 68. He was perhaps the most prolific and well known voice actor, and was featured on hundreds of thousands of commercials and movie trailers. He passed away yesterday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA after he developed pneumothorax, which is when a lung collapses and air builds up in the surrounding area.

LaFontaine, who was born in Duluth, Minnesota, began as a voice actor in the mid-1960s while working as a recording engineer, according to his Web site. His strong, slightly gravelly voice was featured on trailers for thousands of films, including “The Godfather,” “Fatal Attraction” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” For a time in the late ’70s, LaFontaine was the official voice of Paramount Pictures.

His favorite work was one he did for the 1980 film “The Elephant Man,” he said in interviews, but whether the film was Oscar-caliber or a bomb waiting to blow, he handled every assignment equally.

“My philosophy is that you have to really believe what you’re reading, even if you think the film’s a piece of junk,” he told Swindle magazine. “Even the worst picture is someone’s favorite film, and that someone is the fan I am always talking to.” iReport: Share your thoughts on “the Voiceover King”

He also provided the voice for hundreds of thousands of commercials, for companies including General Motors, Ford, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and many others, according to his Web site.

The good-humored LaFontaine was willing to poke fun at himself, particularly in a recent ad for Geico insurance, in which he gave dramatic flair to a woman’s story about her car accident. He also voiced the trailer for “The Simpsons Movie,” in which his descriptions were mimicked by commentary from the film’s characters.

But LaFontaine was most famous for his phrase “In a world …,” used by seemingly dozens of movies determined to create an otherworldly atmosphere.

[From CNN]

I found a nice video about LaFountaine’s career on YouTube, below. LaFountaine says at the introduction that when his voice changed during puberty he got sent to the principals office because his teacher thought he was mocking her. He soon learned to use his deep voice to his advantage and said he often called up the school pretending to be various friends’ parents when they wanted to play hooky.

LaFountaine popularized the deep, authoritative voiceover style and is called an inspiration to his fellow voiceover artists. People in the industry praised him for his down-to-earth personality, and he called himself “the luckiest man on earth.” He also admitted that he had fun recording people’s voicemail messages for them after they sent him e-mail requests.

It’s a shame I’m only learning more about this guy after he passed, but I’ve certainly heard his voice enough. Now that I know what a great guy he was, his immense success makes a lot more sense.

RIP Don LaFountaine. You are much imitated but will never be replaced.

Michael Lohan uses father’s death as another chance to make dig at ex-wife & kids

Michael Lohan has repeatedly spoken to the press recently about what a bad influence Samatha Ronson is on his daughter, Lindsay, despite the fact that Lindsay has only seemed to clean up under Sam’s influence. Lindsay’s dad is an ex con who served a nearly three years in prison out of a four year sentence for multiple charges including assault and DUI. He was released from Collins Correctional Facility outside of Buffalo, NY in March of 2007.

Lindsay’s demons are at bay and she’s in a seemingly healthy and devoted relationship with another woman - the first relationship she’s had in years that seems to be stable. Her dad can only keep talking about how much he worries for Lindsay, though, using various shifting reasons that include the booze she’s supposedly drinking despite the lack of evidence, the antidepressants she might be on, and Sam’s plans for an autobiography.

Yesterday both Sam and Lindsay struck back at her dad with entries on their myspace blogs, saying he’s a “public embarassment and a bully” who is addicted to fame and using them to get publicity.

Michael Lohan’s father just died, and he’s using his father’s death as another chance to publicly bad mouth his ex wife. The first part of his statement is acceptable enough, he says his dad died and he hopes his wife and kids come to the funeral. That’s understandable and you would expect him to say that. He might even garner some sympathy for it if he could leave well enough alone. But no, he has to bring his point home with more obnoxious digs at Dina that show he’s more concerned with his personal vendetta than his father’s death.

Michael tells OK!, “My father just, literally, died in my arms. I notified all my kids and my lawyer notified Dina’s attorney. Let’s see if she has the decency and respect to bring my kids to the wake and funeral.”

He continues, “THIS will show her true colors! Thus, not even a call. But that’s par for the course with Dina! She didn’t even send a card or visit when he was sick.”

[From OK!]

What an ass this guy is! If Dina and the kids don’t show up at the funeral, can you blame them given the way he’s acting? No wonder Lindsay has cut him out of her life. He’s toxic and he wants to continue dragging his family down with him. Lindsay deserves some recognition for rising above the very dysfunctional family she must have grown up in and finding a partner who supports and loves her. I doubt she’s drinking again, but if she is she’s doing it moderately because you haven’t seen one photo of her looking wasted or even hungover in the past few months.

Hip hop legend Dr. Dre loses his son

One of the founders of hip hop and a respected producer, N.W.A. member Dr. Dre (born Andre Young), has suffered a personal loss. His 20-year-old son, Andre Jr., died over the weekend. No word on the circumstances of the young man’s death yet, but the family is waiting for the autopsy report.

Rapper DR. DRE is in mourning after his son passed away, according to reports.
The body of 20-year-old Andre Young Jr. was found at his Woodland Hills home on Saturday morning (23Aug08), reports AllHipHop.com. His mother allegedly found him unresponsive when she checked on him at 10am, and immediately called emergency services.

Young was said to have been out the previous night and returned home at 5.30am.
The cause of death is currently unknown as officials await the results of a post-mortem examination.

[From Contact Music]

I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but in many cases when a 20-year-old suddenly dies, there is some kind of substance involved. The fact that he was out until 5:30 in the morning also points in that direction. Dre and his family are going through a very difficult time, so I hope they are able to get some answers. Dre is considered one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, working with such artists as Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game, and Tupac Shakur. Condolences to him and his family.

Dave Matthews Band’s Saxophonist LeRoi Moore dies

The Dave Matthews Band’s incredibly talented saxophonist, LeRoi Moore, passed away today at the age of 46. He suffered some pretty extreme injuries (including a punctured lung and broken ribs) a little over a month ago during an ATV crash. LeRoi was in the hospital for several weeks but had returned home to recuperate, and had flown with the band to Los Angeles for their tour. He took a turn for the worse yesterday and was admitted to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and passed away in the afternoon.

A rep for DMB gave TMZ the following statement: “LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. Moore had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.”

LeRoi Moore’s trip to California from Virginia may have been detrimental, as Janet Charlton reports:
He was slowly recovering but suffered lung complications and hasn’t been able to perform. We were told that against doctors advice, he flew to LA to be with the band backstage when they open tonight at the Staples center. The flight may have affected him adversely and he died today.

According to DMBNews.net, Dave Matthews was spotted crying outside of his Los Angeles hotel with the news of LeRoi Moore’s death. Fans outside DMB’s hotel in Los Angeles today reported seeing Dave Matthews crying, and he and other band members and crew hugging each other while boarding their tour buses.

[From the Huffington Post]

LeRoi was a phenomenal saxophonist, and his work is one of the many things that really set the band apart from other folk groups. Together with violinist Boyd Tinsley the fullness and grace of the band’s sound could really be heard.

I’ve been lucky enough to see DMB live so many times I’ve lost count. Their energy is absolutely amazing – and what’s always stood out are the looks on the members’ faces as they play – just true joy for what they’re doing. Our thoughts are with LeRoi’s family, friends, and the band.

It’s impossible to pick out LeRoi’s best concert solo or the song where his work most profoundly influenced the entire feeling. So I picked this song - #41 – one of my top three favorites. It’s a beautiful song and you can hear LeRoi’s influence throughout , and he gives a beautiful solo at about 4:45. You see just what an amazing, astronomical talent he was.

Stars pay their respects to Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes at memorial services

Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes and Samuel L Jackson in a still from Soul Men, which is due out next year
Co-stars Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, who passed away the same weekend, were both honored in separate memorial services this weekend attended by family, friends, and a multitude of celebrities. Singer Isaac Hayes was remembered in a public service in Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday, where a wide array of celebs were in attendance, from Jesse Jackson, who knew Hayes through his civil rights activism, to fellow Scientologist Kelly Preston. There was also a private service on Sunday, which was attended by Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise.

The weight of soul singer Isaac Hayes’ legacy in Memphis could be measured in a single remark at his memorial service Monday.

“What would you say if you were flying into Memphis and they said you are about to land at Isaac Hayes International Airport,” U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen asked, drawing a huge burst of applause during a four-hour service of music, speakers and video clips.

Cohen, who represented Hayes’ area of Memphis, said the city should celebrate Hayes, an architect of the Memphis sound, as it celebrates Elvis Presley.

“He is a world person who the world will miss,” Cohen said.

The deep-voiced soul singer died Aug. 10 after he was found unconscious at his Memphis residence. No autopsy was performed, but paperwork filed by Hayes’ family doctor, David Kraus, lists the cause of death as a stroke.

About 3,000 fans and friends attended the service. They remembered Hayes for his music and his movies and for his humanitarian work that included building a school in Ghana.

“He was a lovely man, always involved with causes,” the Rev. Jesse Jackson said before the service. “Literacy, civil rights. He was always there, and that’s why we’re all here for him.”

Jackson was among the speakers that included Al Sharpton and actresses and fellow scientologists Anne Archer and Kelly Preston.

From the Huffington Post

Meanwhile, movie and TV actor/stand-up comedian Bernie Mac’s memorial service in Chicago brought thousands of fans, friends and co-stars as well. Jesse Jackson must be racking up the frequent flyer miles, because he attended this service, too. Other mourners included Chris Rock and Cedric the Entertainer, who was reportedly inconsolable at the loss of his Kings of Comedy comrade.

Thousands of mourners came out for a Chicago memorial service honoring Bernie Mac Saturday.

Some fans slept outside overnight in hopes of securing a seat inside the House of Hope church on the city’s South Side, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Chris Rock, Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and Rev. Jesse Jackson attended the emotional service, in which photos from the comedian’s career were shown on projectors and the White Sox organization presented Mac’s widow Rhonda with a No. 1 jersey bearing his name, the paper reports.

Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama and Andy Garcia also sent condolences.

During the service, Mayor Richard Daley remembered Mac as someone with “a heart and passion.” Daley, who met with Mac a few weeks ago, added: “He knew the street, he knew the people, and that’s why he was a king of comedy. He wanted to do something personally to get children away from the life of violence. . . . He never lost his soul in Chicago.”

[From People]

Best wishes go out to both men and their surviving families. They will certainly be missed.

Isaac Hayes died of a stroke; ‘Soul Men’ with Hayes & Bernie Mac could be delayed

Soul Men features Isaac Hayes, Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson
Isaac Hayes’ cause of death has been released, after he was found lying next to a treadmill. He died from a stroke.

The deep-voiced soul singer died on Sunday after he was found unconscious at his Memphis residence. No autopsy was performed, but paperwork filed by Hayes’ family physician, Dr. David Kraus, lists the cause of death as a stroke, sheriff’s spokesman Steve Shular said.

Deputies were among the emergency crews that responded, and sheriff’s department detectives were looking into the death. Kraus told investigators that he had been treating Hayes, 65, for high blood pressure, Shular said.

Family members found Hayes lying on the floor of his home beside a treadmill that was still switched on.

AP via New Zealand Herald

This makes me sad all over again, that he was obviously trying to improve his health by using a treadmill and seeing a doctor for blood pressure, and it was too late.

An idea I rather like, some websites are suggesting that Dimension are considering putting back the release of Soul Men, as the storyline deals with death and the film features both Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac.

Warning: plot details, potential spoilers for Soul Men ahead

Death is a big subject in the film. The entire plot of the movie revolves around Mac and Jackson eulogizing the death of their friend with music, only now two members of the film’s actual cast really are dead. Three days ago it sounded like a fantastic idea for a film, especially in light of the way Sam Jackson belted out blues tunes in Black Snake Moan. Now, it seems almost too sad to watch. Buying a ticket to Soul Men could end up feeling like you’re purchasing a seat at someone’s funeral.

The movie doesn’t open until November 14th, so that does give the world a little time to grieve for its tragically departed stars. Still, don’t be surprised if Dimension Films decides to delay it a little more, maybe even until next year. November 14th may be too soon, particularly in light of the subject matter.

Cinema Blend

It is so great that the movie will be put back instead of any attempt to cash in on the death of the actors. Particularly in the case of Hayes who is playing himself. This is a very kind and human thing to do, since releasing the film right after the deaths of the actors could generate more ticket sales. Even if it isn’t good business.
