Emma Stone in b&w Martin Grant at the MTV Movie Awards: unflattering or lovely?

Emma Stone

At last night’s MTV Movie Awards, Emma Stone won the inaugural Trailblazer Award, which I think is the equivalent of a “Face of the Future” declaration but in edgier MTV terms. She gave a tearful acceptance speech (which MTV hasn’t put online yet) after a glaringly unfunny tribute video featuring Jim Carrey, Anna Faris, and Mila Kunis failed to explain exactly how awesome Emma really is. Because you know, she is pretty damn awesome.

Emma’s dress was a bit fancy for MTV standards, but she pulled it off well. She wore a black-and-white Martin Grant dress (with matching Brian Atwood pumps) that paired an architectural (for lack of a better word) top and a surprisingly cute white bubble skirt. Who else could have pulled off that skirt without looking like she had a huge butt? Even as a blonde, Emma is the picture of poise and offbeat classic beauty. I love the slightly messy updo, which shows off her gorgeous face and the lone bit of color on her lips really pops.

Emma Stone

Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks won the Golden Popcorn award for Best Transformation as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games, and she clearly had a great time during her acceptance speech onstage with the Magic Mike guys — Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and Joe “Big D*ck Richie” Manganiello. In an amusing move, Joe even picked up Elizabeth and carried her offstage.

Get More: MTV Shows

As for Elizabeth’s outfit, this black Elie Saab was daring in its side-revealing lace panels but also really fug and too severe for the occasion. The Croydon facelift-type bun didn’t help matters either, and Elizabeth’s makeup was too eye-liner heavy and otherwise meh. She usually does so well on the red carpet with a great fashion sense, but I wasn’t a fan of this look at all.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough wore a short, black Sally LaPointe dress on the red carpet, and at least she had the body for the dress even if I wasn’t wild about the look in general. Peplum rarely works, especially in such a kicky outfit such as this one. Perhaps because of its belly baring nature, this dress reminded me of Gwyneth Paltrow’s fug Pucci dress from last year’s Emmys. Julianne’s hair was even flat ironed in the trademark Goop manner as well. Does Julianne secretly want to be Goop? At least her understated makeup seemed appropriate for the occasion.

Tom Cruise continues to rock out in new ‘Rock of Ages’ stills: OMG, his stomach.

Tom Cruise is at it again (that is, grossing me out) in some new Rock of Ages stills from Collider. Sure, I’ll admit to being rather unkind towards Tom as he rocked out in two awful trailers, and things have gotten particularly ugly with the arrival of Tom’s tattooed W mag cover and embarrassing full shoot. To reiterate, I’m not terribly crazy about Tom as a person (it’s a Xenu thing), but I legitimately take great issue with the fact that he’s playing Stacee Jaxx in a very unironic manner, which is not how the character is portrayed in the Broadway show.

Tom himself has even bragged about reinventing the Stacee role as a serious rock star and insisting that his version of the character be accompanied by a monkey called “Hey Man.” In fact, Tom is so bloody serious about this role that he prepared for the role by dancing and singing ten hours per day, and (last summer) he even took advantage of some down time to rock out on a hotel balcony to universal cringes. So am I overreacting a bit to Tom’s overzealous nature in this role? Well just wait until he ruins A Star is Born as well. Here are those aforementioned new Rock of Ages stills. In this one, poor Paul Giamatti is being forced to feel up Tom’s rock star moobs.

Tom Cruise

In some of the other stills, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand are camping it up as the proprietors of the club where Stacee Jaxx performs. Clearly, Baldwin and Brand understand the cheese factor involved with this movie. Too bad they couldn’t both teach Tom a few things, but nobody teaches Tom anything. That’s the main problem I see with this film thus far — director Adam Shankman was just so thrilled to have Tom Cruise in his little movie that he neglected to give his lead actor some, you know, direction.

Russell Brand Alec Baldwin

Russell Brand Alec Baldwin

Julianne Hough is digging the hairspray in this movie. Nice attention to detail with the rusty sinks. She’s still not a leading lady though.

Julianne Hough

Diego Bonita: I still don’t get it.

Diego Bonita

Catherine Zeta-Jones appears to be truly embracing her role as an anti-rock ‘n’ roll activist. I would hope that she’s merely collecting a paycheck here and didn’t sign on for the “art” factor.

Miley Cyrus in Jean Paul Gaultier at the Billboard Awards: sexy or try hard?

Miley Cyrus

At last night’s Billboard Awards in Las Vegas, Miley Cyrus showed some serious skin in what looks like a simple blazer and heels with no pants to be found. Alas, this is an actual blazer dress from Jean Paul Gaultier, and Miley paired it with Christian Louboutin sandal heels along with her tanned cleavage and simple gold jewelry to jazz up the ensemble. I really like the unusual print on the shoes. Her figure looks stunning as well, but Miley also went for very big hair, and the overall effect is that I expect her to roll around on a car in a Whitesnake video. Am I the only one who gets that vibe? Miley is trying too hard here and wants some serious attention, I think.

Miley Cyrus

Also, I’m obviously one for a bit of bedhead, but this is ridiculous.

Miley Cyrus

Julianne Hough donned a Kaufmanfranco dress that fit the Vegas vibe because it reminded me a lot of something that the latest hot young starlet might wear to Caesar’s Palace. She looks great in this shiny, silvery, vaguely toga-like outfit that still flatters her fit figure and very long legs. Her hair is appropriate, but her eye makeup makes her look a little bit spacey.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough

Justin Bieber

Of course, Justin Bieber had to walk the red carpet looking like he always does. At this point, I’m just glad that I can’t see his underwear. Speaking of the Biebs, I know that some of you didn’t understand why I didn’t give him a hard time for basically sounding like an idiot in his GQ interview. Yes, he said some silly things (“I’m a swaggy adult!” comes to mind), but it’s not like he went racist or misogynistic in manner of John Mayer. What Bieber said in that interview didn’t hurt anyone … with the possible exception of himself, so I cut him a break.

Justin Bieber

Natasha Bedingfield

Natasha Bedingfield is wearing … I don’t know. This black knit (?) dress is pretty cheap looking, and I couldn’t find a designer ID because it probably doesn’t exist. As in, she might have actually taken an old Snuggie and cut a few strategic holes to fashion her outfit for the evening. The coral lipstick and flower pinned in her hair also aren’t doing Natasha any favors.

Amber Rose Wiz Khalifa

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa were there too. Amber’s never been known for a demure take on fashion, but that dress looks pretty painful on her boobs.

Lisa Marie Presley Michael Lockwood

Lisa Marie Presley showed up with her Tom Petty-esque scarecrow of a husband, Michael Lockwood, in tow. His scarves are starting to rival those of Russell Brand.

Tom Cruise sings “Wanted Dead or Alive” in new ‘Rock of Ages’ trailer: dreadful?

It seems like forever since Tom Cruise was announced to play Stacee Jaxx in the movie adaptation of Broadway’s Rock of Ages, and at this point, I’m just ready to get this painful mess over with when the movie releases on June 15. Of course, we’ve already had to endure Tom rocking out on a balcony to universal cringes because he (presumably) felt the world deserved a preview of the fruits of his 10 hour per day song and dance regime. This is not to say that witnessing Tom as a rock star hasn’t been somewhat enjoyable, what with the rock-star lifts and the shirtless writhing from the movie’s first trailer. I’ll admit that the first one really was a campy and fun trailer to behold in a “so bad it’s kind of good” sort of way, but the second theatrical trailer has been released, and it’s just a mess. Check it out, and we’ll discuss:

This trailer really seems like no one bothered to seriously edit it beyond tossing a bunch of flashing lights and scenes together. Why did anyone feel that including anger-bear Alec Baldwin saying “omigod, I just threw up … in my pants” was a necessity? Beyond that, Julianne Hough is a cutie (on paper, this movie seems like the ideal role to showcase her talents), but try as I might, I just can’t warm up to Diego Bonita. Russell Brand’s hair looks even more ridiculous than usual, and Paul Giamatti and Catherine Zeta-Jones are clearly there for the paychecks. As for Tom belting out Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” … I’m feeling very underwhelmed. Tom should’ve added more cheese, but it seems like he’s taking the role quite seriously. No surprises there, right?

Grammys fashion: Carrie Underwood, Kate Beckinsale, Miranda Lambert and more

Carrie Underwood looked incredible at last night’s Grammys in a high neck long sleeve white and silver sequin Gomez-Gracia gown. It was demure yet sexy and featured a subtle cut out at the back. Our friends at Red Carpet Fashion Awards write that her black clutch was “too heavy for this look,” but I disagree and find it kind of striking against the white. I like her poofy hair and her heavily done eyes paired with neutral lips. In some shots her eyelashes look like caterpillars they’re so huge. It’s overdone but somehow Carrie pulls it off. Carrie was up for Best Country Solo performance, for “Mama’s Song,” which went to Taylor Swift for “Mean.” She performed a duet last night with Tony Bennett, “It Had To Be You,” which was flawless. (You can watch it here.) I loved her performance gown as well and she switched up her hair for that too, opting for flowing waves.

Kate Beckinsale was done to the hilt as usual, only this time she attempted a more “casual” look that’s just as constructed as everything she puts out there. I think Kate looks gorgeous, as she always does, and I like that she has her hair pulled up in loose curls. It highlights her pretty face instead of bringing attention to all the fake hair she has. Kate was in a short Zuhair Murad one-shoulder cream gathered gown with a black ribbon detail. It also featured a trailing chiffon scarf-like loop at the side. It was a decent dress and appropriate for the event but it looked like it should have been knee length instead of so short.

Miranda Lambert was in a peachy-biege embroidered cap sleeve Pavoni gown that had some superficial features in common with Taylor Swift’s dress. I don’t love it and found it somewhat predictable, but it looks nice on Miranda and I like her styling. Kaiser and I were talking about this dress and she thinks it’s very pageanty and similar to a lot of the other tacky dresses Miranda wears. It’s not bad for what it is I guess. What’s up with her shoes, though? Look at her toes peeking out under her dress.

Julianne Hough really rocked a tight sleevess black and grey Kaufman Franco with abstract bamboo-like stripe detail. I love this dress and find it both contemporary and very flattering. Julianne’s styling leaves something to be desired, though. Her makeup could be bolder and her hair is kind of underwhelming with that center part that ends halfway down her scalp. Still, one of the better dresses of the night.

On the other hand Alicia Keys took contemporary too far in this Alexandre Vauthier Couture. Red Carpet Fashion Awards has a photo of the dress on the runway and Alicia paired it with the exact same shoes the designer used. Her feet look crammed in there and like her toes are trying to escape. That’s just the design of the shoes, and it’s so unflattering. Those padded shoulders coupled with that poofy hair just looks ridiculous. Plus she had the worst accessory of all.

Tom Cruise in the ‘Rock of Ages’ trailer: gloriously painful or not that awful?

Honestly, this week of Tom Cruise international red carpet appearances for Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol has been a true pleasure to cover, but now something even better has happened. That is, the first Rock of Ages trailer has debuted, and it’s even more painfully amusing than I’d hoped it would be. This is why Tom practiced ten hours per day, folks. This is why he butched it up in well-heeled boots. And this is why he rocked out on a balcony to universal cringes. In a way, it was all worth it for Tom, who writhes shirtless onstage as the “legendary” Stacee Jaxx and spews out “sex, hateful music, and … sex.” Really:

Tom seems really uninspired by signing that chick’s rack at the end of the trailer, right? Method acting. As for the rest of this mess, it’s entirely horrific but the movie might find a small to moderate audience who doesn’t mind watching Paul Giamatti and (gasp) Catherine Zeta-Jones debase themselves. As for Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin, however, they’re totally playing versions of their own personas, and Diego Bonita and Julianne Hough sure are pretty.

Now for some more fun with Tom’s plastic surgery face, which some of you doubted in yesterday’s photos of the MI4 Madrid premiere. Indeed, Tom is aging well from a physical standpoint, but his “refreshed” face isn’t merely the product of clean living and lucky genetics. He’s definitely had some very subtle work done by a skilled, highly-paid surgeon. While Tom looks pretty natural in the below photo (from the London premiere of MI4), just hold on tight because sh-t is about to get real in the aftermath.

Now, if there was ever any doubt whether or not Tom’s ever had a facelift (or two or three), check out this picture that Kaiser sent to me (on a bit of a red alert) with a nudge-wink about the strange fold of skin behind Tom’s ear. Indeed, that’s pretty damning evidence of a facelift (or two or three) and undoubtedly the reason why Tom’s been favoring turtlenecks lately:

Doesn’t Tom look like an alien televangelist in these photos? I keep expecting bolts to start popping out of his skin like Xenu Frankenstein or something.

Finally, here are Tom’s special lifts for the brisk London evening. They’re a lot more subtle than usual, aren’t they? Then again, he didn’t really pose next to anyone else on the red carpet this time around. Good plan, Tom.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Pucci at the Film Awards: hot or bizarre?

fp_8070915_rij_hollywood_aw
Kaiser has already covered some of the fashion at last night’s Hollywood Film Awards, including Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan and George Clooney and Stacy Keibler. She’ll be mentioning Anne Hathaway and Emma Stone in a moment. Here we have a few of the other celebrities that lit up the red carpet. No one really impressed me except for Julianne Hough and Viola Davis.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley tried to work a intricately beaded Pucci gown and kind of failed, in my opinion. She’s so hot and she’s gotten it absolutely right so many times in the past. It’s kind of refreshing to see her with messy pulled back hair, minimal makeup and a dress that makes her look more like a rare exotic bird than one of the hottest models around. Even the chick who gets to sleep with Jason Statham looks like crap once in a while.

fp_8070918_rij_hollywood_aw

hollywood_film_awards_037_w

Elle Fanning, still just 13 years old(!), wore a very conservative off white Valentino dress that could pass as a tablecloth. She accented the look with a Heidi braid. It’s kind of sweet for a kid and while I’m not a fan of the dress, I like that she’s covered up.

fp_8070944_rij_hollywood_aw

fp_8070946_rij_hollywood_aw

Julianne Hough really shone in a tight beige dress with a sequin swirl pattern and a deep v-neck that went nearly to her belly button. In theory I don’t like this dress and find her matchy shoes too much. On her though it worked and she looked amazing. Love her hair and makeup.

hollywood_film_awards_078_w

hollywood_film_awards_077_w

Amber Heard vamped it up in a blue silk dress with a dramatic bodice slit. I thought we were about to see sideboob, but it didn’t materialize. As we’ve seen in the past from her, the color seems a little off, but I think it’s more her hair color this time than the colors in her dress. Her hair and makeup are phenomenal though.

hollywood_film_awards_094_w

hollywood_film_awards_097_w

hollywood_film_awards_095_w

Busy Phillips was goofy in an updo and a tight black dress with a sequin boob window. I still love her though. She always looks like she’s having so much fun and would be a blast to be around.

fp_8070873_rij_hollywood_aw

fp_8070872_rij_hollywood_aw

Bryce Dallas Howard does not get a pregnancy pass for this mess. She has no boob support, the dress looks like a nightie, and she may have gone for the soft wave look with her hair but the result is no better than an air dry. Her jewelry and shoes look cheap too. Get it together, Bryce!

fp_8070896_rij_hollywood_aw

Sara Rue showed off her body by Jenny Craig in a purple formfitting gown that was the same shade as Stacy Keibler’s dress. She lost a lot of weight and looks different due to that of course, but what did she do to her face? I get the impression that she had some work done.

hollywood_film_awards_021_w

hollywood_film_awards_022_w

Viola Davis was one of the best dressed of the night in this off-the shoulder jade flowing gown that she accessorized perfectly. She’s so well put together without going overboard.

Julianne Hough spotted making out with someone who wasn’t Ryan Seacrest

fp_8009775_seacrest_hough_coq_12_14

Hold onto your dancing shoes, folks. It looks like Julianne Hough, girlfriend to Ryan Seacrest, might be getting some on the side, according to an eyewitness who called into the popular “Dave and Jimmy” radio talk show. If this story is true, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time that Julianne is rumored to have gotten close to another guy while she’s been with Ryan, for she looked uncomfortably comfortable with her Rock of Ages co-star, Diego Bonita, just a few months ago. Now, she’s had a reported liplock with her Footloose co-star, Kenny Wormald, and the allegations are that she basically had her tongue down his throat last weekend at a Nashville nightclub. Gross:

fp_7968475_rij_footloose_55_93

We were in Nashville for a bachelorette party. There were seven of us girls, and it was towards the end of the night, so we decided to head into Sistee’s lounge, which is a pretty popular bar in Nashville. From what I hear, it’s where the celebrities go. We look over, and there’s this chick sitting on the stage making out with this guy. One of my friends looks over and recognizes that it’s the guy from Footloose — the guy star from Footloose. So we’re like, “Let’s go over and get a picture with them.” And we haven’t recognized the chick at this point because her face was buried in his, so um, we walked over and grabbed him. As we were pulling him away to get a picture with him, the girl that he was with grabbed him to pull him back. And he kept coming with us and took a couple of pictures with us, and then my friend looked back and recognized that it was Julianne Hough that he was making out with.

The next day, we were readng in the newspaper from out hotel room, and there was a story about how the entire cast of Footloose was in Nashville the previous night for a pre-screening of the movie.

[From Dave and Jimmy]

So is this story true? Who knows, but the timeline details do seem to measure up since Julianne indeed attended the Nashville premiere of Footloose last weekend. Seacrest was not visible on the red carpet either, so we’re left to assume that he was not in attendance. Yeah, she probably did make out with Wormald in that club, but ugh — if she’s going to step out on Seacrest — couldn’t she at least have picked someone who is at least somewhat worth it? If the positively brutal reviews for Footloose are true, this Wormald guy isn’t going to go much further than this remake.

Meanwhile, Ryan is 37-years-old, whereas Julianne is only 23-years-old, and she’s likely still in the young phrase where being tied down isn’t the first thing on her mind. Plus, her movie career is (temporarily) on the upswing, and she’s travelling all over the place to do filming in promotion. Poor Seacrest needs to find himself a new steady girlfriend, or you know, put out a want ad.

Julianne Hough in Tibi high-waisted shorts: adorable or tragic?

wenn3542662

The only people I recognized from last night’s LA premiere of Footloose were Julianne Hough and Andie MacDowell. The dude who got the Kevin Bacon role in this completely unnecessary remake is Kenny Wormald, a name that I’m sure you’ll forget in two seconds. I included a photo of Kenny (who?) too, but I still wouldn’t be able to pick him out of a lineup. Anyway, let’s talk about Julianne Hough’s hot pants/shorts. On Beyonce, they would be hot pants. On Julianne, they’re just shorts. I generally don’t think “fancy” shorts are a good idea, especially for a red carpet situation. I just don’t think shorts can be “dressed up” or made into red carpet fashion. That being said, I don’t hate this Tibi outfit on Julianne. She’s 23 years old, and shorts with the long-sleeved thing (is this a onesie?)… it’s kind of cute and youthful. The color is great on her too.

She left her character’s signature red cowboy boots at home, but the star of Footloose still rocked the standout color at the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles on Monday Night.

Julianne Hough posed for pics in a red organza top and matching high-waisted shorts by Tibi. The 23-year-old dancer and actress wore her hair in side-swept waves and kept her accessories to a minimum.

When Hough was asked about the clothing she wears in the remake of the 1984 classic, she told Us Weekly, “The boots were the best part. I loved the red boots more than anything! And I wore all Levi jeans. It was awesome!”

[From Us Weekly]

Julianne’s boyfriend Ryan Seacrest wasn’t there, I don’t think. I didn’t see any photos of him, so I guess she was flying solo last night. As I talked about last week, I’ve given up the hate on Julianne and Ryan. I now think they’re rather cute together, so it would have been nice to see them do another red carpet together. Perhaps Ryan was just being nice, though – if he did the red carpet, he would have been the biggest celebrity there, and he would have completely overshadowed poor Kenny (who?).

wenn3542669

Also, Andie MacDowell wore ill-fitting red. I think she’s so pretty, but this dress does her no favors:

Ryan Seacrest & Julianne Hough do the carpet together: surprisingly cute?

promise_gala_arrivals_10_wenn3534607

Just go ahead and shoot me in the face, because I’ve finally come around on Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest. I’ve gone from outright disgust, to thinking they were ridiculous, to thinking they were hilarious, and at this point, I’ve just accepted them. They’re cute together. And whatever they are to each other sexually (God knows), they make a rather attractive red carpet couple. He’s older, more powerful and short. She’s young, petite and ambitious. They work together surprisingly well, aesthetically and power-couple-wise.

promise_gala_arrivals_13_wenn3534623

So these are new photos of Seacrest and Julianne at last night’s Promise Gala, which was honoring Ryan. Ryan and Julianne don’t do the red carpet very often… I’m actually struggling to think of a time when they’ve ever walked a carpet together. So last night was special. Ryan was being honored, and his girl got a blowout and wore a pretty dress, and they posed together. It’s sweet. Julianne’s dress is Naeem Khan Resort 2012, and I rather like it. I kind of like her blowout too – does anyone else think she’s giving off major “young Jennifer Aniston” vibes? She’s cute.

Oh, and Julie Bowen was at the event too. She looked like bedraggled ass.
