Kaley Cuoco regrets her SAGs bangs: A black eye would’ve been better

Kaley Cuoco

At this year’s SAGs ceremony, one of the very worst red carpet turns came from Kaley Cuoco’s awful bangs disaster as she supported her fellow “Big Bang Theory” cast members. This was, to quote Kaiser, a textbook case of “bangs trauma.” Kaley’s saccharine-sweet, red lace Romona Kevesa dress wasn’t the best choice either, but let’s be honest here and acknowledge that Kaley could have worn the most amazing dress out there, and her bangs would have ruined everything.

I’m not full-on anti-bang like Kaiser is, but I think most people look better without them. Some obvious exceptions are Reese Witherspoon and Zooey Deschanel, who can really rock bangs. But I think Kaley’s face shape isn’t well suited for bangs, and even worse — these were cheap, clip-on bangs. Clip-on bangs almost never look good and always look out of place. I remember quite vividly that Katie Holmes made the mistake of wearing clip-ons at last year’s VF Oscar party, but she might have been attempting to divert everyone’s attention from her ill-fated marriage to Tom Cruise at that point.

Back to Kaley, who has received everyone’s message loud and clear: no more bangs for her! She admits that she only wore the clip-ons as a means of covering up a black eye, and she says that if given the choice next time, she’ll totally go with a black eye instead:

Kaley Cuoco

Kaley Cuoco is used to receiving accolades, but after wearing controversial bangs to the 2013 SAG Awards, the actress learned how it feels to be panned.

“I got reamed a new A-hole,” The Big Bang Theory star, 27, told PEOPLE on Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo’s Most Powerful Stylists luncheon. “I will never do that again! That was my faux pas, and because of that, they hated everything: the [Romona Keveza] dress, my shoes, everything.”

She swears the bangs were supposed to serve a purpose: “I had a black eye, so we were trying to hide it,” she says. “Next time, if you’re going with a black eye or bangs, go with the black eye.”

But at the time she made the decision, there was no stopping her.

“I know what I want, so even if everyone said ‘Bangs don’t look great,’ I loved them,” she said at the West Hollywood Soho House event, dressed in a colorful McGinn ensemble. “I think that on the carpet, they read worse than they did at home … I just accepted it and made fun of myself and moved on. You show up at the next one and you look fabulous and fine and they make fun of someone else.”

[From People]

Poor Kaley. Many of us experiment with hair styles and have experienced at least one style that has resulted in tears, but most of us haven’t had to live it down after a red carpet disaster. Here are some subsequent photos of Kaley at a Television Hall of Fame induction gala and PaleyFest where she looks much, much better. Hopefully, the entire world will someday be able to forget those awful bangs.

The Hot Guys of the Screen Actors Guild Awards: who would you rather?

I always forget that one of the best parts of the SAG Awards is the super-buff “Actor” statue, complete with a substantial (for his size) bulge. I always want the winners to rub their statues as they give their acceptance speech. Like, just graze the bulge as they’re talking. Over and over. Anyway, speaking of bulges you want to rub (groan away- IDGAF!!), here are some of the hottest men of last night’s SAG Awards. I’m not going to allocate them dude by dude – this is just a hodge-podge of nice-looking guys.

I’m including Hugh Jackman, Daniel Day Lewis (who won Lead Actor), Ben Affleck (Argo won Best Ensemble), Bradley Cooper (he totally hot a blowout & he almost cried when he didn’t win), Alec Baldwin (wearing what seems to be a toupee from the Travolta Collection), Bryan Cranston (bald is beautiful!), Mandy Patinkin (love him), David Harewood, Damian Lewis (with bonus Abu Nazir), Aaron Paul and Javier Bardem. If I’m playing who would I rather… it’s Damian. Then Javier. Then I would want a bear hug from Mandy, and then I would go back to Damian. And then I would go to Daniel Day Lewis and make him read poetry to me. Rinse and repeat!

UPDATE: Sorry, I forgot Eddie Redmayne! He’s still my vote for the most stylish man of the awards season.

Jennifer Garner in gold Oscar de la Renta at the SAGs: washed out or hot?

When the E! camera panned to Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s arrival at the SAGs, I got a little jolt of hope that these two might actually walk a red carpet together. Jen whispered something in Ben’s ear, Ben kissed her affectionately, and I thought “this is it, we’re going to get photos of them together on the red carpet for the first time since that bad superhero movie!” But no, it didn’t happen. Ben talked to Giuliana and she asked him where Jennifer was, and he was all “long gone,” as if it were Jen’s decision not to do an interview with him because she was too busy posing. He did thank her at the beginning of his acceptance speech, when Argo took home the actor for best ensemble cast.

Ben’s speech came right at the end of the night, and he ended it on a perfect note. He was so psyched and he gave such a nice tribute to the other actors, and actors in general. (You can watch his speech here.) As Kaiser mentioned, I really think Argo could bring it home for best picture at the Oscars. The Academy Members get their ballots right around now, and they’re going to remember Ben’s awesome speech at the SAGs.

In term’s of Jennifer Garner’s gold gown, I was disappointed. Let me put it this way, I thought she looked hot in spite of the dress. It was probably the color, which kind of washed her out. Maybe the color looked prettier in person than it did on camera. I did like her makeup and her loose curls. I don’t remember ever seeing her hair like that in the past, and I like that she changed it up.

Viola Davis was one of last night’s presenters and she wore this bright teal one-shoulder Monique Lhuillier. I like that she chose such a bright color, and that she went with her natural hair. Plus her orange earrings are a nice pop of contrast. This is a gorgeous gown and a sophisticated look. Something rude: her shoes are kind of trashy.

Also looking bright we have Nina Dobrev in shocking pink Elie Saab, a designer she’s worn in the past. This dress is so sleek and gorgeous, and Nina rocks it as usual. I love to see what she wears to events, she’s usually spot on.

In contrast Julianna Margulies wore this black and white Chado Ralph Rucci gown that was like an uglier version of Marion Cotillard’s two-tone dress. I don’t like the way the skirt scoops up into the bustline, and I dislike the cut and the dripping asymmetric black band at the hemline. It’s a bizarre dress that strives to be contemporary and just fails, in my opinion. I’m not a fan of her fashion in general. Her husband is so hot, I have to say.

Bonus: Jennifer Garner and Julianne Moore!

Anne Hathaway in black Giambattista Valli at the SAGs: lovely or trashy?

Ah, the Five Stages of Hathaway. Where are you? Denial? Sadness? Annoyance? Hatred? Or Acceptance? As a Hathaway Apologist, I’m not sure Annie’s victory at the SAGs was really my night. Anne won Best Supporting Actress for Les Mis, which basically means that she’s totally winning that Oscar. And Anne knows it too. She may be working the “gaspy, overwhelmed little girl” shtick, but she knows. She’s practiced her acceptance speech, and last night was the dress rehearsal for the Oscars. So, how did she do? Eh. She annoyed me. And that pains me to admit!

Anne wore a Giambattista Valli couture dress which I really disliked. First of all, if we’re just talking about everything from the waist up, Anne has worn something remarkably similar in the not-so-distant past, right? I feel like she’s done the black sheer thing before, and recently. As for the long, sheer tutu and the biker-chick mini underneath… HOT MESS. I’m sorry, but that dress looked incredibly trashy and cheap, especially as she was walking up to accept her award. I felt like we were about to see the Hathaway Beav again. OSCAR! Wouldn’t it be great if she named her beav “Oscar”?

As for her hair and makeup… as I’ve said, I like she seems to be trying to mix up her hairstyles, but I think her hair was too flat at the Globes and too high at the SAGs. Maybe it will be “just right” for the Oscars. Her makeup is fine – not too heavy, which was a BIG problem with other ladies last night.

Sofia Vergara in white wrinkled Donna Karan at the SAGs: awful or sexy?

Last night, during the red carpet interviews, it was like a repeat for me with Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara. Julie was talking to Giuliana Rancic, and then Sofia Vergara crashed the party with her over-the-top personality and tatas. Don’t they do that every time? Like Julie starts it off and then Sofia has to barge in. It’s not like Julie minds, she’s good friends with Sofia and they probably arrive together and plan it like that, it’s just kind of tired for me, as is Sofia’s very consistent style. She does bombshell va-voom and that’s it. At that SAGs it was more of a dud dress for Sofia. She was in this very white, very wrinkled Donna Karan gown that just looked like a cheap prom dress. You know who else wore Donna Karan last night? Naya Rivera in that Elvira gown. Both of those women looked awful.

Modern Family won the actor for ensemble cast in a comedy, which comes right on the heels of their Golden Globe win this year for best television series – musical or comedy. Here’s Sofia clutching the award in the press room.

In contrast Julie Bowen wasn’t bad in this black leather Johanna Johnson v-neck gown with studded cap sleeves. I get what she was going for – rock and roll meets high fashion, and it’s not a failure of a dress. There’s something cool about it, although I admit that I like Julie so I’m willing to give her a pass. I didn’t like her messy ponytail, though, I thought she could have done something else with her hair.

Their cute costar, Sarah Hyland, was radiant in purple strapless Dolce & Gabbana. This dress is so pretty, and look at how perfect her makeup is. Overall she looks amazing.

And I’m throwing pregnant Busy Phillips in here at the end for lack of another place to put her. She was in a full-coverage full-length Gabriela Cadena gown and told Giuliana that she decided to show off her bump instead of hide it. She also revealed that she’s due in June. I liked that she went with such a fitted gown, that was a bold choice. I also liked her statement necklace. Her hair looked a little goofy to me all puffed up like that.

Nicole Kidman in Vivienne Westwood at the SAGs: the best look of the night?

Nicole Kidman was a double-loser last night. She was nominated for Supporting Female Actor for The Paperboy (she lost to Anne Hathaway) and for Female Actor in a TV Movie (she lost to Julianne Moore). The one category which I’m really happy about is the TV Movie one – Nicole just looked flat-out awful (as in, crazy Botox-face and lip injections) in Hemingway & Gellhorn, and Julianne Moore killed it in Game Change, so I’m glad that Nicole keeps on having to eat it when Julianne wins. What’s nice is that I think Nicole has acknowledged to herself that she’s going to lose, because she actually looked like she was having fun last night. She sat with Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber and she just seemed happy and “loose”.

As for how she looked – during the Golden Globes weekend, her face looked kind of crazy, but I actually thought “the freeze” looked a bit looser and “un-frozen” a little bit. The haircut helped – I think she was going for a blunt-cut, rock n’ roll style, but it looked kind of stringy at times. Her Vivienne Westwood gown was the bomb, though. It was one of my favorite dresses of the night. Beautiful color, great fit, lovely design. It suited her too.

Naomi Watts wore this totally boring Marchesa wedding dress. Right? There was nothing special about this dress at all, and there was nothing about to differentiate it from a wedding gown. She’s a beautiful woman, and I love that she doesn’t look “worked on” but I expect more from her, style-wise. I guess the nicest thing I can say is that for Marchesa, at least it’s not actively awful, you know? It’s just nondescript, boring and bridal.

In my mind, Kerry Washington regrets getting bangs. In my mind, she’s still trying to figure out how to do her hair because she realizes she made a huge mistake by chopping her hair and getting those awful bangs trauma. Thus, she side-swept them and tried to make the best of it. But I can still see them, and they haunt me. As for her dress – Rodarte. Eh. Much like Naomi, I expect more from Kerry, and I expect her not to wear a damn wedding dress. She has a great eye and she’s unafraid to try different looks, but this just looks like a re-worked doily and tablecloth.

January Jones, big-haired in Prabal Gurung at the SAGs: interesting or just awful?

Do you know that it’s taken me THIS LONG to realize that Christina Hendricks was nowhere to be seen at the Golden Globes? She wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe or a SAG for Best Supporting Actress for Mad Men, which is crime because last season her storyline on Mad Men was amazing and thought-provoking and she killed it. Christina was nominated this year as part of the Mad Men ensemble, but even then she didn’t come out. Now I know what was missing the past few weeks – Hendricks tatas! I miss them. Where art thou, Titsy McGinge?

Anyway, these photos are of the Mad Men cast members who did make it to the SAGs. Let’s begin with the mess that is January Jones. Her dress is Prabal Gurung, a designer that I don’t have a really strong opinion on either way, but this is maybe the worst, the cheapest-looking Gurung dress I’ve ever seen. It’s just poorly designed in total. And January did the dress NO favors with her dystopian hair and her too-heavy makeup. YIKES.

Elisabeth Moss in a subdued and cute Dolce & Gabbana. I like it because she’s not trying to “win” the red carpet, and because she kept it simple. She looks adorable.

Jon Hamm and his girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt. I hope this doesn’t offend the faithful but JESUS H!!!!! Her face is ten kinds of crazy. She looks like she’s trying to morph into Renee Zellweger, right? I swear, the state of Jennifer Westfeldt makes me like Jon Hamm less.

Vincent Kartheiser and his girlfriend, the Lady Lazarus, Alexis Bleidel. He looks old (right?) and she looks like Emily Deschanel. Still, I love that they’re a couple now.

I’m trying not to be a full-on Jessica Pare-hater. It’s not her fault that Megan Draper sucks so hard. But good God! The closeup of just her face startled me. From a distance, in the full-length photo, she looks okay in the green Jason Wu though. It’s not a great dress, but I do like the color.

Jessica Chastain in red Alexander McQueen at the SAGs: improving or prom-y?

There were so few pops of color at last night’s SAGs, so whenever I did see someone wearing a jewel tone, I immediately liked them more for bucking the black-and-white trend. That being said, just because you’re one of the few pops of color in a sea of black, that doesn’t mean you’ve chosen the right color or the right design.

Take Jessica Chastain in this Alexander McQueen. Does this even look like McQueen?! No, it does not. This looks like Escada or some knock-off prom dress in unfortunate tomato-colored satin. It’s not good. But! I will applaud Jessica for actually getting her dress fitted, because that is one of her most consistent style problems – remember the horrible fit on her Golden Globes gown? Or the parade of too-tight gowns last year? Her necklace is Harry Winston – there were a lot of big necklaces on the carpet last night, and I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of that look (the look = tight satin dress, big diamond necklace, Veronica Lake hair). I think it looks dated in a bad way. And Jessica’s hair looks WORLDS better, right?

Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior – I believe it was just Marion and Jennifer Lawrence in Dior last night? And I liked Jennifer’s more. I think Marion’s Dior could have been reworked into something amazing. Here’s what I would have done: used the teal silk for the entire dress and not bothered with the white boob bandage, then I would made it full-length all over so it would just be a full-on ball gown. If you want to wear a ball gown, just do it. Don’t half-ass it like this. Also: I’m not crazy about Marion’s hair.

And here’s Freida Pinto in Roland Mouret. This is one of those times where I think the dress was a lot prettier in motion – I really liked it when I was watching the red carpet show. But I don’t care for it in these photos. Hot pink can be read in wildly diverse ways, so maybe it’s just a problem with the photos? And she’s so pretty otherwise – beautiful face!

Julianne Moore in white Chanel at the SAGs: fug or kind of awesome?

I love Julianne Moore, and I love to see her on the red carpet. Sometimes she gets it spectacularly wrong, but sometimes she can pull off gowns that other women would look awful in. She’s not at “she can wear anything” Cate Blanchett status yet, but the more often I see her the more I appreciate her offbeat looks. At last night’s SAGs, Julianne wore this white v-neck Chanel gown adorned with black flowers. The bust was poorly fitted, and I found it distracting while she was presenting, but somehow I liked this dress. It’s goofy and whimsical. Maybe that’s due to Julianne’s awesome personality, and maybe she’s so lovely that she elevates whatever she’s wearing.

Julianne won the actor for TV Movie or Miniseries, for Game Change. (For which she also took home the Golden Globe.) During her acceptance speech she named practically every single person who was on the cast with her, ending with the baby who played her son. It was adorable. I could watch that woman read the phone book. She also presented the actor for a female in a comedy series, which went to Tina Fey. Before Julianne read the envelope, she added a little “You Betcha” in reference to their Sarah Palin character. It was cute.

Helen Hunt was in this very classic-looking silver Romona Keveza strapless gown. In photos she looks amazing, but on camera I noticed that something was off about her makeup. Her foundation was too light and her makeup looked monotone, but that was due to way the light hit her. In these still photos it looks much better. The dress is incredible, although I found her jewelry too matchy and heavy for that gown, which should stand on its own. Helen had a lot of stacked bracelets, from Neil Lane, and she told Giuliana on the red carpet that she was also wearing a friendship bracelet from her daughter, which I thought was sweet! She was nominated for lot of awards this season, for her work in The Sessions, but unfortunately she hasn’t taken home anything yet.

Fellow nominee Edie Falco looked strange to me with dark hair last night. I keep seeing promos for Nurse Jackie and blonde hair is much more suited for her. Maybe she’s switched it up for a role. In terms of her gown it was just ok. I can’t get a designer ID on it, but it’s very plain-looking. I think that’s due to the lace from top to bottom. Maybe if it just had lace on the top and a sleeker fabric for the skirt it would have added interest.

I’m adding Julia Stiles as I’d like to talk about her gown. This was just bad, but it’s mostly because of the way the neckline and bodice is cut. The dress itself is kind of striking with that pretty blue grey color with the coral sequin overlay. I like some aspects of it, but the deep tank top look is just dragging the whole thing down. Plus her makeup was overdone and garish. Oh well. She’s always struck me as a strange bird.

Claire Danes in black Givenchy at the SAGs: awkward or avant-garde?

I love a good acceptance speech where you learn something new about your favorite show. When Claire Danes won “Best Female Actor in a TV Series” for Homeland, she dropped a great little detail in her speech: she and Morena Baccarin (who plays Brody’s wife) are tight and Morena cooks dinner for her while they run lines. For some reason, I find that so sweet – mostly on Morena’s part. Nice lady! As for Claire, she continues her sweep of all of the awards forever and always, even though Damian Lewis and the cast of the Homeland were shut out in their categories. Claire wore this one-armed Givenchy which… I kind of hate. The cut was off, right? The sleeve was poorly done, the leg slit seemed awkward, and Claire just didn’t look comfortable at all. Plus, her makeup was much, much too heavy. It bordered on ghoulish.

Morena Baccarin wore Basil Soda. I really don’t care for it at all – too much fabric, it weighs her down. I’m starting to worry about her, actually – she never gets it right for these awards shows, which sucks because I think she’s extraordinarily pretty.

Damian Lewis and ABU NAZIR!!!!!! Actually, the actor’s name is Navid Negahban and the photo of Damian and Navid together is making my life. I was sad that Damian didn’t win, but I was glad that Bryan Cranston finally got something, you know? Damian looked disappointed to lose, but he didn’t seem grumpy about it. No worries – I’m sure Homeland will dominate the WGA Awards, the DGA Awards and then the Emmys in September!
