Christina Hendricks won’t wear sweatpants at home: ‘I can’t do that to my husband’

Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks covers the June issue of Lucky magazine, and she looks absolutely lovely. Unfortunately for some of you, the magazine has covered up most of her famous assets, so there goes the famous booby appeal. She is showing just a hint of cleavage in one of the shots, but it just isn’t the same, right? I’d bother getting up and arms about such a stereotype, but Christina is the one who’s usually going for boob spillage dresses on the red carpet. It’s her thing, I get it. She’s gorgeous, and here are some interview excerpts about fame, “Mad Men,” and the nefarious nature of sweatpants:

Christina Hendricks

On her original acting plan: “I just thought I would work in a hair salon and do community theater. There were so many actors, why do we need one more?”

On the struggle: “I was crying before I went in [to the 'Mad Men' audition] I was just so desperate. I was like, ‘I’m not going to get this,’ and my friend said, ‘It’s your role.’”

Fame is weird: “Just walk down the hall and try to imagine that you know everyone is looking at you.”

She likes dresses that don’t require bras: “Christian Siriano makes his dresses that way. It makes me feel so taken care of.”

Sweatpants at home are a no-no: “I can’t do that to my husband, not after three years of marriage. At home, I put on a low-cut caftan, and he’s like, ‘Babe, you look great.’”

On her Joan character: “Joan used to be Peggy. She just wants the next girl to not get trampled on like she did.. Joan is fascinating. I would play Joan forever.”

[From Lucky magazine]

What does Christina mean when she says she doesn’t slob around at home — “not after three years of marriage“? I can’t tell if she’s referring to a certain “honeymoon period” that dictates when sweatpants are appropriate or not. I do understand the sentiment that it’s always nice to fix oneself up for one’s partner or spouse, but there is a difference between, say, lounging around in form-fitting yoga pants (rowrr) without makeup and wearing hole-filled sweatpants while neglecting personal grooming. I guess Christina and her husband see a caftan as a bit dressier than sweatpants. To each his own. Chris Evans loves sweatpants.

Christina Hendricks in velvet L’Wren Scott at the ‘Mad Men’ premiere: gorgeous?

More photos from the Mad Men premiere last night! I already covered the Battle Royale of the Mrs. Drapers here. This post is devoted to the rest of Mad Men ladies, all of whom wore black dresses to varying degrees of success. I think Christina Hendricks was (surprisingly enough) the best dressed woman at the premiere. Christina wore this gorgeous black velvet L’Wren Scott dress which I flat-out LOVE. I would love to own this dress. I want this dress. It’s gorgeous and flattering for the big-busted amongst us. It suits Christina’s body – she’s not spilling out of it, it’s beautifully tailored and she just looks amazing. My only complaint is that I think it might have looked better with the hemline raised about two inches? It feels like there’s too much fabric at the bottom. Other than that – a total win. Beautiful dress, beautiful styling. Titsy McGinger wins the red carpet! HUZZAH.

Elisabeth Moss wore a McQ dress which shows off her bust (they look perky, so good for her). I don’t think Moss is a very stylish woman, and I get the impression that being a “Fashion Girl” isn’t her priority anyway, so for who she is… I think she looks good. I would have gone with different shoes and a fluffy blowout, but it’s a cute dress.

I don’t have the designer ID on Alison Brie’s dress. It looks kind of cheap and I barely even recognized her!

Good God, what is Julia Ormond wearing?!?! I love Julia, and I love that she’s taken this small but amazing part in Mad Men (she plays Megan Draper’s ballbusting mother), but this dress is a NOOOOOoooo.

Is Christina Hendricks & Geoffrey Arend’s marriage on the rocks?

I don’t mean to mimic my late father, but he had the unfortunate habit of giving people random and sometimes too-on-target nicknames, and I find myself doing the same thing too. Whenever I see Christina Hendricks and her husband, I think to myself “Titsy McGinger and The Nerd King.” Because… for real. Christina is a talented actress and everything, but it’s just all boobs and red hair. And her husband seems nice enough, but he also seems like a total nerd who lucked out by marrying the bombshell ginger with the amazing rack, thus ensuring his place at the top of the nerd kingdom. Anyway, weird/sad news! Star Mag (yeah) says that there might be trouble between Titsy and Nerdy.

One of TV’s hottest women may soon be single. Friends of Christina Hendricks, 37, say her success has ruined her marriage to struggling actor Geoffrey Arend, 34, who recently turned up to a family-thrown couples party without her.

“It wasn’t that long ago that he was the one with the promising acting career, not Christina,” says a source. “Part of him resents that she has this huge gig. There aren’t many men who could put up with all the attention Christina gets.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Well… it wouldn’t surprise me either way. I noticed late last year that Christina seemed to be doing more and more events solo, and that it seemed like she and Geoffrey weren’t spending as much time together (in public, at least). But… it is Star, and it’s not like they even have conclusive or anecdotal proof of a “marriage on the rocks.” And while Geoffrey does seem like a talented character actor, it’s always going to be difficult for two actors to be together, especially when only one of them has had a career breakthrough. So, I hope this story is wrong, but I have to acknowledge that it could be true. For what it’s worth, a “source” told Gossip Cop that the story is false and “They are super happy and supportive of one another…. They are very in love.”

Christina Hendricks in black L’Wren Scott at the AFI Fest: pretty or trashy?

These are some photos from last night’s AFI Fest screening/premiere of the new film Ginger & Rosa. If that film sounds familiar, it’s because we covered some pics of the London Film Festival premiere a few weeks ago. The film stars Christina Hendricks, Elle Fanning, and Alice Englert, all of whom you can see in these photos. Sigh… I really don’t like the way anyone looks here. I know I’m nit-picky and bitchy and all of that, but seriously! WHY does Christina Hendricks insist on doing that to her boobs? WHY does a 14-year-old need to wear a strapless gown?! Let’s analyze.

Christina is wearing L’Wren Scott. You know how much I love L’Wren – I think her clothes are classic, elegant and very, very wearable for women with diverse body types. Is this sparkly black dress flattering on Christina? Yes. It is. It’s a pretty dress that I personally would have no problems wearing. But I feel like we’ve reached a point where Christina should be beyond jacking up her boobs for every red carpet. We don’t need to see your girls EVERY time, Chrissy.

As for Elle… she’s 14 years old. This is the second time she’s gone strapless for a film festival premiere for just THIS movie. The last time it was in London, and she wore a cardigan draped around her shoulders with her strapless Rochas gown. This time there’s no cardigan to pair with her Oscar de la Renta gown, and I still think that she’s just too young to go strapless in general, especially on a red carpet. I do like that her face looks “fresh” and that she’s not wearing a ton of makeup. I also like the hairband. It’s youthful. Too bad about the strapless gown, though.

Christina Hendricks lashes out at reporter: ‘I think calling me full-figured is just rude’

I feel like I spend a good part of any given day trying to come up with interesting ways to describe people’s body types. Mostly, I hate the word “fat” and I usually think the word is misapplied to women like Kim Kardashian, Kelly Brook and Christina Hendricks, just to name a few. To my way of thinking, a woman like Christina is curvy, or “extremely voluptuous” or “she has one of the most insane hourglass figures ever.” But gossip writers and entertainment journalists are often at a loss for describing Christina and her figure. A NYT fashion writer once got in big trouble for referring to Christina as a “big girl”. And now some Aussie reporter is in hot water for calling Christina “full-figured”. To her FACE.

The woman is named Kate Waterhouse, and she’s the fashion editor for the Sydney Sun-Herald. She asks Christina, “You have been an inspiration as a full-figured woman. What is the most inspiring story that you can remember where you’ve inspired someone?” At first Christina is just flustered, and you could feel her wince, and she says “Um, I don’t know… I’m sorry.” Then she looks off camera, the video is shut off, and when they come back Waterhouse ASKS THE SAME QUESTION. Christina goes, “I mean… You just said it again.”

According to E! News, Christina told people off-camera, “I think calling me full-figured is just rude.” Okay. I can see her point about that – I wouldn’t have called her full-figured, but I don’t think it’s weird to call her an inspiration TO full-figured women. I don’t get why Christina couldn’t just speak directly to the reporter and say, “I don’t consider myself a full-figured woman, but I’m glad that I inspire women of all shapes and sizes.” Why this coy act? Why is Christina acting like the fashion editor called her “a big tub of lard”? Or should I be yelling at the editor? I really don’t think she was trying to be rude, honestly. I don’t think she understood that she offended Christina by calling her “full-figured”. Whatever.

Christina Hendricks doesn’t get why people are “judgmental” of her style

I’ve mentioned before that Christina Hendricks gets an extraordinary amount of love from the UK. She gets a lot of press here in America, of course, but over the past few years, it seems like the British press and the UK viewers of Mad Men are simply Hendricks-crazy. She has become an icon of a certain kind of voluptuous, old-school-type of feminine ideal. I think Christina must get lots of offers to appear on the British magazines too, because she tends to do more UK press than American. So here is Christina’s Glamour UK cover for the November issue. What is she promoting? God knows. But she looks pretty in the photo shoot. Some highlights from the interview:

The red carpet ordeal: “You get everyone out there judging your dress and your hair and your lipstick, and you just think, ‘Let me get dressed up and go to a nice party. Why do you have to be so judgmental?’ But usually, once you’re past the red carpet and you get inside, you have a nice time.”

She loves a good kaftan: “I wear kaftans at home – they’re comfortable but still feminine and pretty.”

On Mad Men: “It’s completely changed my career. Instead of people wondering who you are, you walk in and they say, “I love your show”. It’s a nice way to start an audition. I hate to ever think of it finishing. I have concerns about finding something I’m going to fall in love with as much.”

During her haitus from Mad Men: “I’ve got a couple of things lined up for the next break, and I hope to enjoy my home and husband. Just keep going, try to live a happy, normal life, and find a great job.”

Her husband Geoffrey Arend, and how she knew he was The One: “It just became very obvious to me, I was smitten. He makes me laugh and he’s my best friend and I would always rather be with him than not, so those are pretty good indications.”

[From The Mail & TV3]

Yeah, she’s not a super-exciting interview. She never was, and maybe she never will be. Perhaps she’s one of those actresses who actively tries to be boring so that she can play a wide range of characters without the audience feeling like they “know” her a specific way? Or maybe she’s just particularly un-dramatic for an actress. Whatever. Boobs. That’s all that matters, right?

As for her comment about “judgmental” people who yell at her for what she’s wearing on the red carpet… two things. One, yes, Christina has had to deal with more crap from so-called style people because she is not a typical size-zero starlet. So that I can understand. Two, maybe we wouldn’t be so “judgmental” if she hired a stylist who knew what the f–k they were doing for a buxom, pale redhead? Because her current gear is NOT working.

The pink dress is McQueen, by the way. It’s really pretty on her!

Christina Hendricks in pale grey Siriano at the Emmys: awful or improving?

My mom and I were on the phone during the Emmys red carpet show, and when Christina Hendricks came up to talk to Ryan Seacrest, all my mom could say was “BELT.” All I could say was “Jayne Mansfield.” That’s what it was like. Christina is obviously an embarrassment of riches when it comes to T&A, but this dress… ugh. Christina’s Christian Siriano gown was not the right color, first of all. She’s so pale, and I wish she would get out of the habit of wearing such light colors. They wash her out. As for the design… well, at least she was showing off her small waist, you know? I think her boobs are so big, people forget that she has stuff below the boobs. But the dress was very “Ginger Jayne Mansfield.” Which is to say “How can you pay any attention to anything else after seeing that tit buffet?” Sidenote: I was genuinely disappointed that Christina lost Supporting Actress in a Drama.

January Jones in Zac Posen. I hated the dress and I loathed the styling. I might feel differently about the dress if January’s styling had been different, but I can’t unsee this mess. I understand that January’s hair is that color for a film or whatever – but there’s no excuse for that greasy-looking, unflattering hairstyle, nor for that immature-ish makeup job.

Jessica Pare in Jason Wu – she was the best dressed of all of the Mad Men women, I thought. That being said, I blame Mad Men’s 17 LOSSES on her and her stupid Megan character.

Elisabeth Moss in Dolce & Gabbana. It was really awful, all of it. I’m sorry, but she can’t pull off this shade of blonde. If she just went up a few shades, it might be better. But this is awful. And I don’t like the dress at all. The material looks dated and the cut of the dress is terrible.

Christina Hendricks in Jenny Packham at the Creative Arts Emmys: terrible?

These are some photos from Saturday night’s Creative Arts Emmys red carpet – those are the technical awards for behind-the-scenes people in television, like the makeup people and art directors and such. But as the years go by, more celebrities show up, and the Creative Arts Emmys also give away awards to “Outstanding Guest Stars” too, so they’ll be guaranteed some “name” celebrities. First, let’s start with Christina Hendricks. You know I love her. You know I think she can’t dress her body, like, practically ever. This Jenny Packham dress will go down as one of Christina’s worst in a long line of unfortunate decisions. Everything is kind of awful here – the too-big print, the colors, and that crap on the shoulder. If you took off the shoulder detail and changed the fabric to a solid jewel-tone… it might actually be pretty.

Jeremy Davies won Outstanding Guest Star for Justified. LOOK AT HIM. He’s amazing!

Martha Plimpton won for The Good Wife (she’s so awesome in her guest starring role!). Martha wore Christian Siriano. I don’t hate it. I don’t think she’s a very fashionable woman (nothing wrong with that), so I’m just giving her some props for finding something that fit and wasn’t awful.

Neil Patrick Harris, because I know a lot of you have a crush on him.

Emily Deschanel in vintage. Eh. I think the styling is way off (her makeup is a mess) and the dress isn’t all that.

Malin Akerman’s dress has been called “daring” and “plunging”. I guess they don’t get much cleavage at the Creative Arts Emmys. It’s an okay look.

Jennifer Morrison in a red Romona Keveza gown – very pretty. My one complaint is that I would love to see her go a few shades darker with her hair. I just don’t care for her as a blonde.

Christina Hendricks’ $23,980 Farbod Barsum bag: crazy-fug or cute?

Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks was photographed on Melrose Place yesterday (leaving a Hugo Boss boutique, actually), and for the first time ever, her rack was not the main focus of attention. In fact, Christina seemed to take great (uncharacteristic) care to hide her rack behind a denim shirt, which she paired with subdued black jeans and pumps. So what’s the big fuss? Well, Christina just happened to get papped with a one-of-a-kind Farbod Barsum handbag (the “Isabella” tote), which costs a very hefty $23,980. Seriously.

Christina Hendricks

Isn’t this one of the ugliest overpriced purses that you’ve ever seen? Kaiser, CB, and I were all rolling our eyes over it because it honestly shouldn’t be worth more than $500, right? At first, I thought Christina must have merely been gifted this bag, which is actually quite atrocious looking, because there’s no way in hell that she would have forked over that kind of money for a purse. She doesn’t even make that much money from “Mad Men” (none of the actors do), and her movie roles thus far have mostly been limited to playing the best friend of the main character. She obviously couldn’t afford this bag even if she wanted it. Sure, she’s got some endorsements (like Vivienne Westwood), but still, this is an outrageously pricey tote.

Then it was brought to my attention that there was actually a press release about Christina carrying this purse, which means that she was very likely paid to get papped with one of the most ridiculous purses in the entire universe. Easy work if you can get it, right? All the while, Vincent Kartheiser is stuck living with a wooden box without a toilet. Poor Pete Campbell.

Jennifer Lawrence, cleavage-y in Narciso Rodriguez: gorgeous or busted?

GAH!! I love Jennifer Lawrence so much. These are photos from yesterday’s Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 2012 Installation Luncheon, which is basically an event for various celebrities to kiss-ass with the foreign press outlets. It’s basically a declaration of “I’d really like a Golden Globe nomination this year.” So does Jennifer’s appearance mean that she’s hoping for a Globe nomination for The Hunger Games? Perhaps. It wouldn’t be the weirdest nomination, honestly.

Anyway, Jennifer wore this Narciso Rodriguez dress which is AMAZING. As we saw during THG promotional tour, Jennifer’s stylist isn’t all that, and Jennifer gets talked into some funky looks that don’t really suit her. It’s good to see her in such a “clean” look – frills don’t suit her, and she should never wear anything that Zooey Deschanel might choose, you know? Jennifer needs Narciso, Calvin Klein, maybe Armani Prive. As for the way Jennifer is busting out of this dress… isn’t it sexy? She has great boobs. And the cleavage was occasion-appropriate (cocktail dress code at a luncheon = cleavage is OK). The only thing I would change: her hair. Maybe a chignon?

More photos from the event: Carla Gugino in a great little dress. She looks sexy and perfect.

Bradley Cooper is a fan of the three-piece suit, and I’ve never seen him in skinny jeans, to his credit. But whenever I see him in a suit cut this way – with completely normal trousers – I always think, “Is he wearing a woman’s pantsuit?”

Kerry Washington in Dior. Too cutesy for her, I think. The pink is too bright, the cut is too… too… ugh.

Christina Hendricks in a Dolce&Gabbana blouse, a Badgley Mischka skirt, and a L’Wren Scott bag. She looks kind of funereal, but it’s a solid look. It’s flattering, at least.
