Joel McHale flattered to be called gay: ‘If a guy is offended, something’s wrong’

A couple of weeks ago, I was browsing movies on demand through all the crap I subscribe to and picked a mindless romcom, What’s Your Number. I was treated to scenes of Joel McHale’s bare ass within the first ten minutes, which was a true score for me. (The movie itself wasn’t worthwhile except for some great guest appearances by McHale, Martin Freeman and Anthony Mackie.) I screamed and immediately emailed Kaiser and Bedhead about it. So that’s why I get first dibs on Joel McHale stories. I love him so much and am a huge “Community” fan. (Although it’s getting weak lately, right? I didn’t see last night’s episode yet though.)

McHale’s latest interview, in The Advocate, elevates my opinion of him and I didn’t think that was possible. The entire interview is worth reading, but in the interest of brevity I’m using some excerpts that The Advocate people sent. Go over to their site to read it, it’s worth it. Joel is a very attractive, well-dressed, quick-witted guy and he’s often mistaken for a gay man. He’s kind of flattered by it, though, and says that anyone who is offended by that has something wrong with him. Was he subtly throwing shade on Ryan Seacrest? (Probably not, Ryan is sort-of cool about it too.) Joel has been married for 16 years and has two boys, and he doesn’t mind the gay rumors at all:

The A-List Interview: Joel McHale
The snarky and stylish Community star and The Soup host talks dude crushes, flirtatious gay fans, and the big thing he has in common with Michael Fassbender. Whether he’s cracking wise as host of The Soup or as vain ex-lawyer Jeff Winger on the wacky community college-set sitcom Community, now in its fourth season on NBC, Joel McHale looks good enough to be mistaken for gay. Is it any wonder that men throw themselves at him?

On his boy crush:
Ooh, boy, I have so many. Josh Gad. Brian Williams. Patrick Stewart. Nathan Fillion. Kobe Bryant. Chaz Bono.

On the gay rumors about him because he’s well dressed:
Oh, I still see that on Twitter every day. It’s flattering. I always find it really weird when guys flip out over someone thinking they might be gay. If a guy gets offended by that, there’s something’s wrong with him. I take it as a compliment.

On his shirtless Community scenes:
…I’ll do anything for ratings. I mean, was Michael Fassbender exploited when he did Shame? Because it’s exactly the same thing.

On the support of his gay fans:
Community needs all the help it can get, so thank God for our gay fans. Our young gay fans especially are the loudest and most Internet-savvy. That also speaks to the quality of our show, which I think is highly intelligent.

[From The Advocate]

Kaiser especially loved that Fassbender quote. Oh and I have to mention that Joel was semi-nude in the DVD extras for Ted. (I have to see that, gah.) I would tell you to Google it, but I can share Joel in theory and it’s not NSFW or anything, so here you go. I love that this guy is so cool about his gay fanbase, I wish everyone thought this way. I’ll include one additional quote from this interview that I can’t pass up.

What’s the best way for a straight man to handle [getting hit on in a gay bar]?
Just a very quick, courteous bl*wjob.

Joel and his lucky wife in January. I would say something rude, but I can’t. They look sweet like they belong together.

Joel McHale on Chevy Chase using the N word: he said Richard Pryor said it was ok

My imaginary lover, Joel McHale, is doing the talk show circuit to promote the fourth season premiere of Community. It’s on tonight at 8pm on NBC and as I mentioned yesterday, I have not been paid or even mildly encouraged to promote the show. (A PR person from Hulu did send us something on Community so I’ll shoot them a link of thanks, but it’s not like NBC is trying much.) Joel, on the other hand, is busting his cute butt and I’m enjoying seeing so much of it/him. He was on The Late Show last night, where he told some funny self-deprecating stories about how dangerous his childhood was. (You can watch that video here. Joel comes on at 20 minutes in.) As for Community’s fate, Joel explained that it’s going to air finally but will not seem topical considering that there are several holiday episodes that will be shown much too late:

On how Community got shafted by NBC
There was talk us going 26 episodes but we did 13. We were supposed to start on October 19th but they pushed it to February 7th, so our Halloween episode is going to be awesome, and wait till we roll out Thanksgiving and Christmas.

[From The Late Show]

Joel went on to explain some of the more bizarre plot points they’ve covered, like the two paintgun war episodes, the secret trampoline guarded by a former Nazi, the monkey in the air ducts and the puppy parade. That show is so incredible and clever, and my favorite episode remains the video game one, Digital Estate Planning. (“Troy and Abed shooting lava!“)

On the Late Show, Joel didn’t cover much that was controversial – he didn’t even mention that the air duct monkey is named “Annie’s Boobs”! I guess he figured that would be too obscure for a wider audience. On Howard Stern he let loose a little, though, and gave some insider information on how Chevy Chase left the show, after having dropped the N Word in protest of his character’s racism. We already heard all about that when it happened, but it was interesting to get Joel’s take:

On Chevy Chase leaving the show
He didn’t want to be there.

When I would try to [talk to Chevy] he would just try to fight me. He physically wanted to fight me.

On Chevy using the N word
You shouldn’t just be throwing that around… It was one of those things on set where he used it. When he said it I was like “we are now at defcon 1.”

He was protesting his character’s racism. He didn’t like the way that his character Pierce was going.

He had also said in the past, he said that Richard Pryor said it was ok for him to call him that. He literally, he used that!

[From Video on Howard Stern's site]

So Chevy Chase used the N word because Richard Prior, who died about seven years ago, told him that it was ok for him to call him that. He is so out of touch. Anyway I’m not sure if Chevy is even going to be on this season, I assume he is for a few episodes at least as they’ve long since wrapped filming. This is likely the end for Community, considering that they’ve also canned their show runner (who was incidentally in a public spat with Chevy as well). I’ll enjoy every episode and I’ll also watch the hell out of Joel McHale during his press circuit. He looks so sexy in this clip from Howard Stern (below), just chilling on the couch in all black with those kick ass boots. Oh and Joel is going to be on The View this morning too! I’ll be sure to watch it.

Community showrunner Dan Harmon got fired & no one told him. RIP Community?

I heard this news over the weekend, and my heart just sunk. On Thursday we got to see the glorious three-part finale of the third season of NBC’s “Community.” It was amazing and so funny. “My father is the blacksmith.” I was peeing laughing at that. The video game episode was amazing. There are no other shows as consistently clever and funny as “Community,” and that’s why it’s been given another chance after a hiatus earlier this year for low ratings. So many of us love that show and have rallied for its return. The fourth season is set to premiere this fall, with just 13 episodes, about half of what we’re used to.

Given this latest news, the new season may be radically different than the solid, irreverent “Community” we’re used to. Showrunner and creator Dan Harmon was fired, and according to a new post he made on tumblr, the poor guy found out the same way everyone else did – through the press. That’s cold. From what I can gather, he got canned in a joint effort by Sony Pictures, which produces the show, and NBC, where it airs. They’ve brought on “Happy Endings” writers David Guarascio and Moses Port as “showrunners and exec producers,” according to NY Magazine’s Vulture. “Happy Endings” is a decent funny show, but it’s nothing like “Community.” Here’s more:

Dan Harmon has a message for his ex-boss at NBC: You never wrote, you never called.

Harmon, who was sacked late Friday as the showrunner of NBC’s sitcom “Community,” wrote on his blog that he didn’t learn he’d been fired until he received a message on his cellphone. Earlier in the week, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt had told reporters, “I expect Dan’s voice to be a part of this show [next season],” but Harmon dismissed that as mere spin.

“I think he meant to say he’s sure cookies are yummy, because he’s never called me once in the entire duration of his employment at NBC,” Harmon wrote. “He didn’t call me to say he was starting to work there, he didn’t call me to say I was no longer working there, and he definitely didn’t call to ask if I was going to be involved.”

Harmon ridiculed the notion that he would stay on in an advisory role — which would give him little power in any case, as he bitterly noted. “You may have read that I am technically ‘signed on,’ by default, to be an executive consulting something or other — which is a relatively standard protective clause for a creator in my position. Guys like me can’t actually just be shot and left in a ditch by Skynet, we’re still allowed to have a title on the things we create and ‘help out,’ like, I guess sharpening pencils and stuff.”

Two NBC representatives did not return emails seeking comment.

Officially, Harmon was let go by Sony Pictures Television, which produces “Community.” But both the studio and the network have butted heads with the opinionated Harmon, who this year was embroiled in an epic spat with Chevy Chase, a member of the show’s ensemble cast. The feud included the leak of a profanity-laced voicemail from Chase to Harmon. The actor reportedly was infuriated after Harmon rebuked him publicly for walking off the set.

[From LA Times]

I just read Harmon’s blog on this, and I’ll be honest I feel like crying. My eyes are welling up. Maybe I’m PMSing or whatever, but this really upsets me. NO one communicated with this guy prior to canning him, they just got rid of him, probably because he defended his vision consistently. That’s why we had such hilarious, outrageous, thoughtful episodes from Community for three seasons: this guy fought every day in order to create such a wonderful show, and of course he got sh*t on for it.

Look what happened to “Walking Dead” after they fired Frank Darabont. It sucked so hard this season. I’m so mad that my favorite comedy is going to be robbed of the visionary who created it. RIP my favorite show. Those six seasons and a movie aren’t going to happen under NBC’s sh*tty watch. F*ck NBC. They mess up everything.

There was a big feud between Harmon and “Community” star Chevy Chase that made headlines a couple of months ago. Star Jim Rash told a TMZ photographer over the weekend that this had nothing to do with that issue, and that Harmon would be missed.

NBC renews Community, 30 Rock & Parenthood, moves Community to Friday nights

Joel McHale
I want to report on the NBC upfronts since my two favorite non-cable TV shows, “Community” and “Parenthood,” air on the network. As we heard last week, “Community” was renewed thankfully after a lot of rallying by fans and an upswing in ratings following the show’s return. “Community” got picked up for a shorter, 13 episode fourth season. (Incidentally, Comedy Central recently bought the rights to air reruns beginning in late 2013.) Critic and fan favorite “30 Rock” also got a shorter upcoming season, which is rumored to be the show’s last. NBC head Robert Greenblatt stated that the fate of both shows is still up in the air. Greenblat said that “As they age, it’s obviously something you look at. We haven’t definitely said that with any of them yet.” So it sounds like the fate of “Community” and “30 Rock” is somewhat sealed, unless there’s a major uptick in viewers.

“Parenthood,” which has similarly struggled in ratings but remains one of the highest quality dramas on TV, got renewed for 15 more episodes. Like “Community,” I’ll savor every one. Also, “Community” got moved to Friday nights, when everyone goes out. This disappoints me, but at least it’s still on. Here’s NBC’s upcoming schedule.

Monday

8 p.m.: The Voice

10 p.m.: Revolution

Tuesday

8 p.m.: The Voice

9 p.m.: Go On

9:30 p.m.: The New Normal

10 p.m.: Parenthood

Wednesday

8 p.m.: Animal Practice

8:30 p.m.: Guys With Kids

9 p.m.: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

10 p.m.: Chicago Fire

Thursday

8 p.m.: 30 Rock

8:30 p.m.: Up All Night

9 p.m.: The Office

9:30 p.m.: Parks and Recreation

10 p.m.: Rock Center with Brian Williams

Friday

8 p.m.: Whitney

8:30 p.m.: Community

9 p.m.: Grimm

10 p.m.: Dateline NBC

[From E! Online]

I’m reminded of Joel McHale’s comments in an interview with Diablo Cody last year, in which he complained about Community’s poor Thursday time slot. He saidIn the Fall, it’s on against NFL football. In the Spring, it’s up against American Idol. Other than that we have no competition other than Big Bang Theory.” So maybe the Friday night slot is better for the show. I’m kind of resigned to the fact that this will be the last season, but at least there’s more coming. That’s something.

Shows that have been canceled by NBC include “Are You There, Chelsea?,” “Awake,” “Bent,” “Best Friends Forever,” “The Firm,” “Free Agents,” and “Harry’s Law.” Pajiba has a more complete list if you’re interested.

The new shows are bolded above, and here’s more on them. “Chicago Fire” features Lady Gaga’s ex and Vampire Diaries star Taylor Kinney and it looks like there’s plenty of male eye candy. Kinney is even shown shirtless in the promo.

Also, how are “Whitney” and “Grimm” still on the air? I haven’t bothered to watch Whitney, and have only heard terrible things about it. I’ve watched two episodes of Grimm, and it was just so depressing. I guess it’s like a crime show take on the fairy book genre, and I’m not a fan of crime shows.

Joel McHale is shown above at the E! upfronts. His suit is so goofy.

Update: DListed has a list of all the shows that have been canceled by the networks.

Anne Heche in a contrasting color block gown: crazy or striking?

These are photos from an event sponsored by Audi last night to kick off Golden Globes week. The awards season is upon us, and unlike Kaiser it’s not my cup of tea. I find a lot of these events kind of tedious, and I bet that some of these celebrities feel the same way. The fashion there was kind of a mixed bag. Some women treated it like the actual Golden Globes and wore gowns that seemed over the top. Other dresses were more fancy cocktail party-style, which seemed to be what was called for.

Anne Heche was haughty cray-cray in this long shiny bright crimson and matte purple Ferragamo gown. I really hope this contrasting colorblocking trend is on the way out. Heche just heralded its demise.

Heche’s Hung co-star (although it’s been canceled, boo!) Thomas Jane didn’t even bother and just wore jeans, sneakers, a sweater and a baseball cap.

Viola Davis ruled the red carpet in this metallic scoop neck dress with contrasting silver bands at the waist and hemline. Her hair and styling are amazing. This look is spot on for this event.

Julie Benz was lovely in a tight silver sequin cap sleeve v-neck dress. I’m thinking she needs a belt or something to complete the dress, and those gold shoes are a little much with the metallic theme. Still, she looks hot and I love her hair and makeup.

Julie Bowen rocked this really striking web-look Naeem Khan dress. Her look might be a little too formal for this event but I just love that gown. That’s something I would want to wear over and over again and I feel like she should have saved it for a bigger event. It would have been perfect for the Globes.

Zoe Saldana is doing the knock-kneed hands on hip pose here. I actually love her asymmetrical hemline dress and find the silver collar striking. It works with those shoes too. I’m including a close up photo of her face as she looked different to me in the full length pose. She’s maintaining her Botox at current levels, though.

Joel McHale and his wife are so cute together! They look like brother and sister they’re so similarly attractive. The fact that he’s been happily married for over 15 years makes him hotter to me.

I wondered why this woman Alexandra Breckenridge looked familiar. She’s the hot younger version of the maid on American Horror Story! I’m including her just because she wore this daring but somewhat trashy tight and very short red dress. She looks like she’s going clubbing, not to an event.

Rachel Hunter was also a little trashy-looking in this black satin dress. I don’t like dresses made from just that single fabric, they look more like nightgowns.

This chick Erin Richards is on “Being Human” and I honestly didn’t know who she was until I IMDB’d her. I just have to include her for these insane shoes, which look like a grade school student’s Native American craft project. They’re ugly but somehow fascinating. I think I would wear them once just to see what people had to say.

The Community hunks and Joel McHale drink coffee shirtless: hot, goofy or both?

Shirtlessness starts at 1:10 if you have that short of an attention span
DListed just posted this video and I got kind of irrationally happy for a moment and assumed that Joel McHale was just named People’s sexiest man alive! He wasn’t though, this is just his “audition” video for People. Apparently he was supposed to make a “mundane” activity look sexy, so he made some coffee in a french press and served it, shirtless, to the other guys from the show including Dani Pudi (Abed), Donald Glover (Troy), Ken Jeong (Senor Chang), and Jim Rash (Dean Pelton). All that’s missing is Chevy Chase! You know he has droopy moobs, but I still would have loved to see him here. The Dean is giving me Moby vibes here, and I also find him so hot! Who knew?

At about 1:30, the boys starts take off their pants with Pudi (Abed) unbuckling McHale’s belt for him! The video ends before we get to see the goods though, which is a shame. My other complaint is that it’s pitifully low res. This needs to be in HD.

Now I’m imagining McHale serving me coffee shirtless while cracking jokes. It’s actually making my day. It’s also making me consider getting a french press so I can prolong the fantasy. God, I’m so much of a fan girl that I want to have the same type of coffee as McHale.

Also, can you guys please start tuning into Community on Thursday nights on NBC or watching it online? We have no affiliation with NBC or the show at all, but I just love it so much and I’m afraid that it will be canceled due to low ratings soon. That show is ridiculous at times, but it’s also funny as hell and so unique.

Oh this reminds me that Diablo Cody interviewed Joel McHale (video above) as part of her “Red Band Trailer” web series. It’s long at 14 minutes, and if you want to get to the good part just go to about 9:10. McHale’s dry humor and excellent delivery really come through. He talks about his career and how he got his start. At around 3:00 in he discusses his gig on “The Soup.” He joked that when they got their start “we would do things just to see if the network noticed. Sometimes they did.” They talk about “Community” around 4:00 in. He addresses the fact that it’s in a crap timeslot at 8:00 on NBC Thursday:

In the Fall, it’s on against NFL football. In the Spring, it’s up against American Idol. Other than that we have no competition other than Big Bang Theory.”

McHale also talks about some of his upcoming films, including The Big Year with Steve Martin and Ted with Mark Wahlberg.

At 9:18 (again in this video), Joel holds a rented baby and sits at a Tiki bar to answer questions. This part is hysterical. They claim the baby’s name is Inspector Maroon Five.

On the Kardashians:
Thank god for their ratings and their marketing genius and Bruce Jenner’s face.

If Ryan Seacrest could fire him
Ryan Seacrest has the power to kill all of us right now.

Kody also asks him about the fact that he’s been married since 1996. He jokes that he’s “very abusive, that’s how I keep her…. No, she’s great. I’m very lucky. I couldn’t do any better than her and we really like each other. I never thought about being with anyone [else] and she’s just the best. And we have two little boys. Isn’t that great?” Awww!

Here are a bunch of photos of McHale shirtless from last season’s Community. [via Squarehippies]

Joel McHale: We can’t mention Kim Kardashian’s sex tape on The Soup

fp_7670755_rij_spy_kids_40_
I love Joel McHale so much. I watch The Soup just about every week as I subscribe to it on iTunes and it never fails to cheer me up. That show is obnoxious and oh so funny. They promote a lot of E! shows by mocking them, although it does seem like they’re gentler on the reality twits that E! churns out, particularly the Kardashians. In a new interview with JustJared, my imaginary occasional husband/weekend hookup I never have to clean up after, (married women know what I’m talking about) says that they’re barred from mentioning Kim’s sex tape at all. It makes me so happy to hear Joel mildly trash the Kardashians. Oh and in regard to the sickening amount of wedding coverage, you can go to E! for that. We’ll get to it eventually but the truth is we really don’t care.

JJ: What is it like to work on Community?
JM: “It is thrilling to be on that show and we just added John Goodman to be the new Vice Dean and Michael K. Williams from The Wire – he is our ex-con Biology teacher and he is hilarious. Get ready for some good times!”

JJ: Tell us about your upcoming movie Ted with Mark Wahlberg.
JM: “It’s done! That was so fun! Seth MacFarlane is a genius and he wrote the script that has the same joke style as Family Guy, but it’s live action and has Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. Seth is a great director and does a great job on telling the story of the characters. It’s rare that I read a script and laugh out loud.”

JJ: Has The Soup had any backlash with people that have been joked about on it?
JM: “I know the Kardashians don’t like me. No one has said ‘how dare you,’ reality stars without exception have come up to me and have said ‘Thank you for making fun of me.’ We made so much fun of Jake Pavelka, and he responded by coming on the show. With the Kardashians we’re not allowed to say they have a sex tape anymore because the network flips out. Tyra Banks was the only one that tried to make us not feature her show on ours, but then she changed her tune, and then she went off the air, much to our great disappointment.”

JJ: What shows are you looking forward to make fun of on The Soup?
JM: “Dancing with the Stars is the show that keeps on giving. I also love Hoarders and My Strange Addictions, I like all the weird shows.”

[From Just Jared]

Yay, John Goodman is coming to Community! I love this anticipatory time of year, when we wait for all our favorite shows to come back. Most of them end up disappointing me, but not Community, that show is consistently hilarious and ridiculous. I don’t think it’s just the fangirl in me that is clouding my judgment. Community is coming in one month, with the premiere slated for September 22. *Claps hands and tries not to look like a total dork*

As for Kim’s sex tape, of course they’re not allowed to mention it on The Soup. The Kardashians think they own E! because they helped put them on the map. They were the right famewhore family that was there when the planets were aligned perfectly. We needed some more faux celebrities to mock and they fit the bill so nicely. Now they think they’re royalty when they’re just the next generation of soap opera.

Check out Joel with his family. So cute!

Jessica Alba in Dolce & Gabbana for the ‘Spy Kids 4D’ premiere: cute or over-done?

wenn3455247

Aw, she might be a moron, and she might be “racially ambiguous” but I think Jessica Alba looks super-cute here. These are pics from yesterday’s Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World in 4D premiere. Alba wore a maternity maxi dress from Dolce & Gabbana that looks great on her. The clutch is by Roger Vivier and the shoes are Louboutin. She’s gotten to the part of her pregnancy where she’s gained weight in her face, and I think it makes her look younger and cuter. She looks like a knocked-up 19 year old! That’s what some added weight can do, ladies. My only complaint – and this is just a minor thing – is that Alba was the only person at the premiere who “dressed up” like this, in full hair and makeup and a long dress. While I don’t fault her for the dress (she probably just chose the dress that fit, that was the most comfortable), I will side-eye the over-the-top hair. The hair says “Oscars!” It’s slightly too much for the premiere of a kids’ film. Still, it’s only a minor qualm.

wenn3455216

I think Alba is due soon too – her baby shower (with a “French country” theme) was last week, and the way she’s been talking, I expect her to give birth soon enough.

wenn3455266

Other photos from the premiere – CB’s soulmate Joel McHale and my favorite child actress, Kiernan Shipka, from Mad Men. Look at her adorable dress! Look at her boots!

Josh Holloway vs. Joel McHale in hotness showdown on Community finale

joshvsjoel
Here’s some good news about my favorite sitcom, Community. I should say it’s mixed news because it reminds us that this incredibly funny, highly watchable show is about to close out its second season. It’s going to do so with even more man candy, though, so I guess I can live with that. Lost’s Josh Holloway (who is featured in this week’s Hot Guy Friday) is going to guest on the two part season finale as some kind of hunky competition to the snarky boyish hotness that is Joel McHale’s Jeffery Winger. It looks like this won’t be airing until mid May, though, so we have around five more episodes to look forward to.

nippleplay
Potential mild spoilers in quoted text below
I didn’t watch last night’s episode of Community yet, so I would say no spoilers in the comments yet, but it still won’t spoil it given how much they put in that show. That episode is on the DVR waiting for me like a box of truffles after dinner. One of my favorite parts of last week’s episode was when Abed and Troy explained that they’d had to stop hanging out with Jeff after Britta told them Jeff liked nipple play – then Troy mimed like he was stroking an imaginary Jeff’s nipples. They’re so great at riffing off same sex relationships in that show (remember when Annie tried to kiss Britta?), and given all these funny comments by the stars I think we can assume that Josh and Joel will have a little homoeroticism going.

Joel McHale is used to being the resident hunk on the set of “Community.” Now, a challenger emerges from off the island.

Josh Holloway is slated to guest star in the survivor paintball-themed second season finale of the NBC comedy, and series co-star Alison Brie said that the “Lost” alum caused quite the stir on set.

“Josh Holloway from Lost makes an appearance and he and Joel have a “handsome off,” as I like to call it, between the two of them,” Brie told NY Magazine’s Vulture blog. “That was kind of the vibe on the set, as well. Everyone on set — guys and girls alike — were fawning over Josh.”

Brie said that the vibe of a relaxed set changed a bit, in honor of the handsome star. “Everyone was on their best behavior, looking better than ever. Our male producers would talk to Josh for five minutes and then they’d walk over and say, ‘He really is attractive, isn’t he?’ It was so funny. There were a lot of man crushes, absolutely.”

Holloway has had this “problem,” before; he bemoaned his sex symbol status in a 2009 interview with Company Magazine:

“‘[The] whole sex-symbol thing is really strange,” he said, adding that he, “wouldn’t wish it on anybody. I appreciate the opportunity to work, the cash it gives you, and other things it provides are wonderful. But the celebrity thing… I don’t like attention.”

Still, McHale didn’t seem to mind the good looks of his “rival.”

“Josh Holloway is as sexy, as dreamy as you would expect, even more so than he was in ‘Lost’ I think,” he recently told TV Guide. “You really get to see his comedic side. He nails it. He’s so funny. He was such a good guy, great to have around. I would follow him on to any set and then they would handcuff me and escort me out.”

[From Huffington Post, sources are TVGuide and NYMag]

I like that they’re reprising the paintball scenario that was last year’s brilliant finale. This show rarely gets it wrong – excepting that bizarre stop motion animation Christmas special. I didn’t even watch the whole thing. Did anyone even like that? (My mom did so don’t be ashamed.)

malcolmjamalwarner
Oh and I also have to mention how much I like relatively new guest star Malcolm Jamal Warner as Shirley’s ex husband. He’s great in that role, and they even work in the occasional Cosby Show reference for him.

Community has been renewed for a third season, hurray! We have plenty more to look forward to after this season wraps.

Photos are from NBC, where you can watch full episodes of Community for free if you’re in the US.

Joel McHale swills scotch and mocks Hoda and Kathy Lee on The Today Show

Joel McHale of E!’s “The Soup” and the NBC comedy “Community” was on The Today Show yesterday. Community is my favorite comedy and McHale and the rest of the cast are just brilliant in it. The show is full of clever jokes and apt pop culture references that have you crying laughing. (You can pick up watching it at any point and it’s available on NBC.com and Hulu.) Anyway Joel is also the host of The Soup, which regularly makes fun of other talkshows, including The Today Show with Kathy Lee and Hoda. Most of the segment with Joel involved recaps of the way he’s mocked the two of them. There was plenty of ribbing about their antics. He even brought a bottle of single malt scotch with him and offered them some, since they’re shown drinking so frequently. This recap at Hollywood.com does better justice than I can to Joel’s appearance, but just watch the clip above if you can get away with it where you are:

God bless Joel McHale. He stars on one the funniest shows on television, Community, and hosts the always entertaining round-up of the most hilarious bits of terrible television, The Soup, and he’s easy on the eyes, so that doesn’t hurt either. Now, he’s hit a new high. He stopped by the set of The Today Show this morning to promote Community with a bottle of single malt scotch in hand. (Don’t worry, he brought enough cups to share the boozy wealth with Kathy Lee and Hoda.)

In case you, I don’t know, have a life and aren’t sitting around watching the fourth hour of The Today Show on a regular basis, the ongoing joke about hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathy Lee Gifford is that they get up the courage to “entertain” us with an entire hour of inane banter by getting a little toasty first. And if you saw Hoda at the Super Bowl last year, you know there’s plenty of high proof fuel for that fire. McHale (and everyone else, including SNL) reiterates this point over and over again on The Soup – perhaps because the ladies continue to act like they’re blasted on a daily basis. When he stepped on set, it was obvious that the allegedly drunken duo was ready to grill him for his crimes against the precious fourth hour…

Finally, the ladies got to the elephant in the room and ask him why he continues to mock their show to which he replied, “Have you seen your show?” Score one, McHale. (Or score about a million.) McHale also cited the infamous Super Bowl segment, capping it off with “How’d you get those beads?” (Duh, Joel she can’t remember if she flashed someone or not. She was “allegedly” drunk!)

You could tell that Kathy Lee was slightly offended by the way The Soup has been mocking her, but once Joel got the two of them laughing their asses off they were ready to forgive him. How could anyone stay made at that guy?

Last night’s Community featured Hilary Duff as a new mean girl on campus. I haven’t seen it yet but I’m excited to, and am sure it’s hysterical. Highlights this season include the zombie Halloween special and the excellent Apollo 13 tribute. This show is pure genius.

Here’s McHale promoting the show earlier in the morning:
