Taye Diggs: My mom always knew I’d end up with a white girl

wenn2806076

I’ve made the mistake before of assuming that Taye Diggs is a good guy with a stable relationship. He and Idina Menzel have been together for more than a decade, and they have a 2-year-old son, Walker Nathaniel. It’s also widely rumored (meaning the rumors appear on the many of the urban blogs) that Taye gets some strange on the side. There was also a blind item this week on CDAN that many people think is about Taye and Idina – it’s about a B-list celebrity dude cheating on his wife with a production assistant. Blind items aren’t facts, though. I don’t know what to think about him – I want to believe he’s a nice guy who loves his family. But maybe that’s just the image he wants to project. Speaking of, Taye gave an interview to Sway’s Sirius radio show yesterday, and Taye discussed lots of personal stuff:

Taye Diggs always knew Idina Menzel was The One — but he wasn’t always so sure the Broadway star’s family felt the same way about him.

“When she took me home, her dad came out and I was like, ‘OK, well take off that hood then and let’s see,” Diggs recently joked on Sway’s SiriusXM radio show. “No, I’m just kidding! I said, ‘You’re tough with the fiery cross in your yard!’”

All kidding aside, Diggs, 40, said he was “really lucky” to be accepted by his in-laws.

“I don’t know what they felt on the inside, but I was very fortunate,” he explained. “They’re very loving and accepting. They’re great grandparents. I can’t lie, I had no issues there.”

Diggs’ family was equally accepting of Menzel, 40.

“My mother said, ‘I told you!’” the Private Practice star laughed. “She always thought — I hate this, but I’m being honest — she said, ‘I always knew you were gonna marry a white girl!’ I hated her when I was young for saying that, but eventually, for whatever reason, that’s what happened. She loves my wife.”

Though the Chocolate Me author admits he and Menzel are often criticized for their interracial romance, it hasn’t affected their feelings for one another.

“I get it, but that’s not my trip,” Diggs said. “I’m living my life and I found a woman who I love.”

Married since January 2003, Diggs and Menzel are parents to son Walker Nathaniel, 2.

[From Us Weekly]

Somewhere along the line, I think the majority of people stopped caring about interracial relationships. When was the last time there was a major story about a hate crime or some kind of controversy surrounding an interracial relationship? I think most people look at Idina Menzel and just think, “Damn. Lucky bitch.” Maybe that envy translates into something bad, but… I don’t know, maybe I just don’t focus on it. I’m glad that Taye’s family was so accepting on Idina, and Idina’s family was so accepting of Taye.

Matt Damon and Taye Diggs’ moving PSAs for Feeding America

Popeater pointed me to this PSA for Feeding America featuring my imaginary husband, Matt Damon, portraying a real-life person who relies on a food back to help make ends meet. I found this video really touching and effective in that it made me want to contribute to this worthy cause. The best part is when the guy Damon is playing comes on screen and tells him that his acting was a little stiff.

And here’s Taye Diggs playing a man who took in his sister’s kids and can’t afford to feed them along with his own four kids. He says “you can’t eat love. I don’t know how I’m going to feed them tonight.” Then the man he’s portraying jokes “I think I look more like Denzel.”

Ugly Betty actress Anna Ortiz plays the wife of a teacher who is struggling to feed her kids. This PSA is also available in Spanish.

There’s another new Feeding America PSA with Ben Affleck, but it’s just a personal appeal and isn’t as interesting as these real life stories.

According to Feeding America, 1 in 6 people in the US suffer from “food insecurity,” with 1 in 4 children living in homes where there’s not enough to eat. You can help contribute to the cause by donating online or helping out at your local food bank. If you need help, there’s no shame in getting some.

Taye Diggs doesn’t get enough credit for being a nice guy with a stable family life

fp_5613093_diggs_menzel_eek_082210

Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel are like the unsung heroes of making a relationship work in Hollywood, and they rarely get the credit. They’ve been together since 1995, when they were both on Broadway, doing Rent. They dated for seven years, married in 2003, and Idina gave birth to their son Walker last September – Walker will be one year old on the 2nd. So… Taye and Idina have been together for fifteen years, and they still enjoy each other’s company, they’re still close, they still make trips to the Farmer’s Market together. Pretty cool, right? So why don’t they get any credit? Is it because you really don’t hear either of them talking about their relationship that much? Or is it because they don’t really have the kinds of careers where every detail of their relationship is over-analyzed? I don’t know.

Anyway… little Walker is a cutie, isn’t he? He looks like both of them, equally. He’s going to grow up and be a total heartbreaker, you know it.

By the way… Taye’s arms, right? They’re insane. So pretty.

Jimmy Kimmel voted out of Handsome Club by Affleck, McConaughey

Last night after the Oscars and local news Jimmy Kimmel aired a funny skit called The Handsome Men’s Club featuring cameos by such attractive souls as Sting, Patrick Dempsey, a shirtless Gilles Marini (from Sex and The City), Rob Lowe, John Kraskinski, Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Josh Hartnett, Taye Diggs, Tony Romo, Keith Urban, Lenny Kravitz, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The bit went on way too long and was just an excuse to add cameos by countless celebrities. Every time you turned around it seemed a new celebrity was shown sitting around the ever-expanding table. The premise was that Kimmel was the head of the self-obsessed Handsome Men’s Club and was being voted out by the members for not being handsome enough. Matthew McConaughey challenged Kimmel’s presidency and then Rob Lowe pointed out that Kimmel was wearing Spanx. Kimmel countered that he looked just like Taye Diggs, to which Taye and the members objected.

The whole thing was ridiculous and was capped off in true Kimmel style with his buddies Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Affleck voted against Kimmel, shamefaced, and then Damon entered at the end and laughed maniacally, telling us we were out of time (a long running Kimmel gag). Next we saw Kimmel in bed spooning with his lover Affleck, realizing the whole thing was a bad dream. Affleck reassured Kimmel that he was attractive and was his “big daddy handsome,” at which point Ben’s wife, Jennifer Garner, popped out of bed and said “Ben, that’s enough, it’s getting weird.”

I didn’t think Kimmel could top his “f’ing Ben Affleck” response to then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman’s viral video, “I’m f’ing Matt Damon.” He did, though, sort of. It was more by sheer star power rather than hilarity, although I was pretty amused, particularly by Damon. He always manages to crack me up.

Taye Diggs & Idina Menzel are expecting their first child

Taye Diggs is going to be a daddy. Taye and wife Idina Menzel are expecting their first child together. The couple confirmed to US Magazine that the baby is due later this year.

Taye and Idina have been together forever. They met in 1996, dated for years and years and then finally married in 2003. They always seem crazy in love, and there’s never been a whiff of scandal about either of them, as far as I’ve seen. While Taye built a career in film and television, Idina built herself a brilliant, Tony-award winning career on Broadway. US has more:

After 13 years together, Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel are expecting their first baby, their rep exclusively confirms to Usmagazine.com. The baby is due later this year.

The Private Practice star, 38, and the Tony award-winning actress, 37, first met on the original 1996 Broadway production of Rent in NYC. After seven years of dating, they got married in January 2003.

Menzel hinted to Us last January that once she finished promoting her third solo album, I Stand, she would consider starting a family with Diggs.

“It’s definitely in the plans,” she told Us. “I’ll settle down and start popping out some babies.” She said Diggs has been ready for kids since “the day I met him.”

“He wouldn’t talk about marriage, but he’d talk about me having his children,” she told Us. “He’s always wanted kids. He grew up with four younger brothers and sisters, so he’s very comfortable around children.”

How do they keep their marriage together?

“We just really work hard to try to stay best friends,” Menzel told Us. “I love him so much, and I feel like we both have each other’s backs, and we have a great respect for each other. We’re enjoying each new phase of our lives together.”

From US Magazine

God, what a sweet couple. Now I’m going to have fantasies about Taye Diggs telling me he wants me to have his babies. Sigh.

That baby is going to be gorgeous too. Idina’s lovely and Taye is gorgeous… how could the baby not be a heartbreaker? Congratulations to the happy couple!

Glamour Women of the Year Awards

The stars were out at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards at Avery Fischer Hall in NY City last night. Jennifer Garner was accompanied by her husband, Ben Affleck, to accept her award as “The Icon Next Door.”

Senator John Edward’s wife, Elizabeth Edwards, was named “The Role Model,” and her award was presented by her children, Cate, Emma Claire and Jack. Elizabeth Edwards is a breast cancer survivor and is currently fighting stage four breast cancer that has spread to a spot on her rib. She is being treated with anti-estrogen drugs.

Young Abigail Breslin was named “The American Girl,” and famed author Toni Morrison was given a lifetime achievement award titled “The Voice of Our Time.”

Garner has an interview with Glamour in which she talks about balancing motherhood with her career and admits that she is a “goody-goody,” but is not immune to an occasional diva moment. She also says that she doesn’t pose on the red carpet with her husband Ben because she tries to avoid the needless speculation that goes along with that:

GLAMOUR: Your press is impeccable. Your fans adore you. Do you have a dark side, or are you a goody-goody?

JENNIFER GARNER: You totally called me out. I am a bit of a goody-goody. Not that there aren’t times when I think, I was kind of an asshole today. I work in a world in which people are really catered to; someone will come up to me and say, “Is it OK if this person’s makeup is done before yours for the premiere?” Right now Ben’s in Africa studying malaria and visiting slums with a lack of potable water and maternity wards where many women have HIV. So would I really put my energy into worrying that I’m second to get my makeup done? When you think about the bigger picture, it’s hard to not have some perspective.

GLAMOUR: Have you managed to find that balance for yourself?

JG: I’m trying to, but it’s hard: I just had a year off where I put every spoonful of food into [Violet’s] mouth. Now I’m working and though I’m usually with her more hours than not, some days I just can’t be. That’s hard for me, and for the first time, my daughter. Luckily my husband is a true partner, and he picks up where I leave off.

GLAMOUR: Is being in Hollywood hard on a relationship?

JG: We’ve worked really hard not to be one of those couples who are constantly in the limelight. In the past we’ve both been the kind of people who go along with things—if you’re supposed to be photographed together, you don’t question it. But how does that help your relationship? So now we refuse to walk the red carpet together: It’s a way of not condoning the attention. Plus, it just feels silly to be in that situation with him: Ben was nominated for a Golden Globe [for 2006’s Hollywoodland]. I remember being photographed next to him and thinking, This is ridiculous. You’re not some actor; you’re my husband.

[From Glamour.com]

Garner also talked about the causes she’s involved with, which include Hurricane Katrina victims and the Children’s Defense Fund.

As for whether nearly two-year-old Violet will have a career in show business, Garner doesn’t rule it out but says that she won’t allow her to get her start in it as a child.

Like Julia Roberts, Garner says she wants to help Britney Spears, and that she “wanted to go backstage and mother her” after her performance at the VMAs.

Garner said she doesn’t wear her Alias costumes for husband Ben at home, because that stuff isn’t that important to him since he doesn’t seem to notice how she looks. She said his lack of attention to her appearance is annoying when she’s dolled up for an event, because she wants to get him to comment on it, but that it usually works in her favor because “most of the time I’m a schlep.”

As for whether she’ll have another child, Garner says she will but that she’s not pregnant or trying yet.

Garner’s hero is her sister, who is “a mom and an accountant for the state of West Virginia.” She says that her sister is “able to juggle a job, kids, volunteer work and church, and she still manages to cook dinner every night without feeling bogged down.” If she’s anything like Jen, she probably does it all with a smile while looking fabulous.

Other women honored at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards include Dr. Victoria Hale, Donna Karan, Lara Logan, Lorena Ochoa, Mariane Pearl, Nancy Pelosi, Shonda Rhimes, and Alice Waters. The non-celebrity woman who was honored was Laura Crandall, a 39 year-old woman who founded the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) Program after losing her 15 month-old daughter to unknown causes.

Thanks to PRPhotos for these pictures of the event. Attendees that were not yet mentioned and are pictured include Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany, Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes, Eric Dane, Portia Di Rossi, Taye Diggs, Iman, Rashida Jones, Fran Lebowitz, James Pickens, Brooke Shields, Diane Sawyer, and Jamie-Lynn Sigler.
