Zoe Saldana vs. Marion Cotillard at Cannes premiere: who looked cuter?

Here are some photos from last night’s Cannes Film Festival premiere of Blood Ties, Guillaume Canet’s new English-only (?) film. The film stars Mila Kunis, Clive Owen, Marion Cotillard, Zoe Saldana and many more. Unfortunately, Mila Kunis did not come to Cannes, and I have NO idea why. I just saw some photos of Mila and Ashton in London, so it’s not like it would have been crazy travel time. Anyway, let’s start with Zoe Saldana in this Valentino gown. I feel like… this could have been more striking if only the designer had made some more interesting edits. I’m not flat-out opposed to the grey-blue fabric, I just think it would have looked prettier… maybe as a strapless ball gown? Those white straps make it seem like Zoe was wearing a shell underneath her gown.

Here’s Marion Cotillard in Dior. It’s just… ugh. Marion loves a mullet dress. She loves to wear ugly, unconventional pieces and style them in unusual ways. Is this the worst thing ever? No. It’s not. But it’s also disappointing because she’s so beautiful and I would love to see her dress impeccably. This dress looks sloppy (but the styling is fab).

Milla Jovovich (she’s not in the film) was there. She wore Chanel. Again, not the best but not the worst.

Aishwarya Rai in an intricate gown by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. The beading and button-front feel very Indian to me, and it’s very beautiful. I would have styled it with her hair back, though. With the hair down, everything just seems so heavy.

Bonus Clive Owen! Mm.

Aishwarya Rai shows off her weight loss in Elie Saab in Cannes: gorgeous?

At last year’s Cannes film Festival, Aishwarya Rai rode into town on a storm of controversy. Rai gave birth to a daughter, Aaradhya, in November 2011 and by the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Rai hadn’t lost the baby weight. So the Indian papers went crazy calling her “fat” and saying that she was letting down her country by not keeping it tight or whatever. It was very depressing, and Rai did stay pretty covered-up throughout the CFF last year.

Well, she came back this year because she’s still a L’Oreal brand ambassador and because Cannes is celebrating 100 years of Bollywood. And guess what? Aishwarya lost the baby weight. She wore Elie Saab on the red carpet for Inside Llewyn Davis last night, and she looked gorgeous. Can this be over now? Can we stop talking about her weight now? I think the Indian media didn’t really know how to handle it last year – their celebrity gossip culture was and is very possessive of “their” stars, and it seemed to really bother people that one of their brightest stars didn’t look perfectly camera-ready. I hope Aishwarya didn’t take any of the criticism to heart.

I’m also including some pics of Rai with her little girl, who is probably… what? About a year-and-a-half old. Indian babies!

Jessica Biel in Marchesa for ‘Llewyn’ Cannes premiere: swan-fug or lovely?

Here are the photos from last night’s Cannes premiere of Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen Brothers’ new film about folk music (sort of). I had forgotten that this film was getting a Cannes premiere, and I bet it was extremely well-received – Cannes loves the Coens. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund and the star is Oscar Isaac (as Llewyn Davis). So, obviously, the REAL star is Justin Timberlake. And by that I mean that the real star of the red carpet is JT’s wife Jessica Biel. This is what Biel wore to her first Cannes Film Festival red carpet as Justin’s wife. She wore a terrible Marchesa dress that looks like a swan went through a car wash. I almost feel sympathy for Jessica because of this terrible dress. But then I remember… she had her choice of frocks. She actually wanted to wear this. WHY?! Something nice: I’m glad that we’re no longer staring at those terrible bangs.

Here’s Carey Mulligan in Vionnet (that’s Oscar Isaac beside her). I don’t hate this, and I don’t love it either. It’s like a deconstructed sack dress, right? Totally shapeless. And weird.

Justin Timberlake with Carey… he didn’t walk the carpet with his wife. Because OMG, are we still doing this?! The jig is up. We know you’re married. We saw your stupid People Mag cover for your wedding. Just walk the carpet together. I will give Justin credit for one thing though – his tuxedo is beautiful. He’s one of the most best-dressed men at Cannes.

Kirsten Dunst was there to support her man too. Garrett Hedlund and Kiki didn’t walk the carpet together either, but I’m not as mad at them because they actually do seem to keep their relationship undercover for the most part. Kiki wore Michael van der Ham Fall 2013 and it’s very fug and old-ladyish.

Bonus Christoph Waltz! He’s on the jury this year, that’s why he’s there. I like his frames!

Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban look loved-up in Cannes: absurd or adorable?

For several years in a row, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie dominated the Cannes Film Festival. They would always walk the red carpet together, and it seemed like they made an effort to give photographers a variety of sexy/interesting poses to choose from. Sometimes Brad would grope Angelina on the carpet, something Angelina’s dress would so diaphanous it seemed like she was naked, and on and on… it was always a good show. But for the past two years, no Jolie-Pitt drama at Cannes (Brad was there solo last year, no Angie). So will Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban (and his flat-ironed hair) take their place?

Keith was in LA for the American Idol final last week, but he came quickly to Cannes once that whole ordeal was over. And last night was Keith and Nicole’s first red carpet walk at Cannes this year (she’s on the jury, so we saw her all last week). They posed and fondled and kissed each other all over the carpet for Inside Llewyn Davis, the new Coen Brothers film. Is this gross? Or funny? Or just… Keicole? Niceith? I don’t know. It’s not sexy. It’s kind of weird. But I’m enjoying it. I won’t buy what they’re selling, but it’s entertaining to watch.

Nicole’s dress is L’Wren Scott, one of her favorite designers these days. L’Wren is one of my favorites too, although I’m not crazy about this dress. The fabric looks like someone glitter-bombed an ugly Hawaiian shirt. And Nicole’s hair is terrible. She’s having HUGE hair issues at Cannes. Is it an issue of humidity? As for Keith… he always has terrible hair.

I’m also including a photo of Keith and Nicole earlier in the weekend, just going out for a meal or something. I LOVE her peasant blouse in that photo.

Rooney Mara in a Dior bib- dress in Cannes: annoying, aloof or exhausting?

Here are some photos of Rooney Mara in Dior at the Ain’t Them Bodies Saints premiere. I think this was a premiere just in general, not in competition for the Palme, either that or it’s in competition for Un Certain Regarde. I don’t know. Rooney’s Dior ensemble is a variation on Jennifer Lawrence’s black-and-white premiere dress, did you know that? I think J-Law wore it better. I just don’t get what Rooney is trying to achieve with her fashion. Is she trying to show us that she’s so avant-garde and special that she can wear fug clothing and pull it off? Or does she honestly think she looks cute? Ugh.

Rooney was just announced as the new face of Calvin Klein fragrances too. So much for her claims that she’s NOT A MODEL and she doesn’t want to be. You can see the first image from her CK campaign here.

Doutzen Kroes in Calvin Klein (the white) and Versace (the pink). The Versace isn’t that good and it washes her out. The CK dress is decent, but I feel like the top part is ill-fitting.

Cheryl Cole in Zuhair Murad. Game show hostess.

Jane Fonda in Atelier Versace. I’m sorry, but everything here looks straight out of the ‘80s. I mean, good for her for still looking so good and everything, but this photo looks like it was taken in 1985.

Lea Seydoux in Louis Vuitton. She’s a beautiful woman in a so-so dress.

Paz Vega has been everywhere in Cannes. I kind of think she’s “working” the festival, you know? She wore this Stéphane Rolland Spring 2013 Couture gown which is absolutely terrible. Jennifer Lawrence wore a Dior gown like this at the SAGs this year, so I guess Rolland is copying Dior. What a stupid design idea to “copy”. God.

Photocall pics from Inside Llewyn Davis, with Garrett Hedlund, Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac. Garrett looks AMAZING. But Justin thinks he’s the “star”!

Is Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest model girlfriend 20-year-old Cara Delevingne?

When I was covering The Great Gatsby’s Cannes premiere, I included 20-year-old model Cara Delevingne in the Carey Mulligan post. I wasn’t think too hard about it, I was just trying to cover everyone I wanted to discuss. I had a moment of “Huh, I wonder why Cara is in Cannes?” but I didn’t give it too much thought because so many models come to Cannes to represent whatever brand they’re the “face” of, plus Cannes parties are some of the best in the world, and there are tons of rich dudes who love to party with celebrity women. Perhaps now is the time to provide the link to The Hollywood Reporter’s recent story about the call girl/escort/prostitute scene in Cannes every year, and how elite hookers (or minor celebrity women who don’t mind selling their bodies) can make hundreds of thousands of dollars a night in Cannes.

That was just a sidenote, by the way. I’m not saying Cara Delevingne is a hooker. No side-eye or anything. She’s 20 years old, she’s dated famous dudes like Harry Styles, and she’s one of the “hottest” models right now, and she’s making lots of money legitimately. She has no need to sell her body. But! What if she did have an ulterior motive for coming to Cannes this year? What if she came at the invitation of Leo DiCaprio?!

Cara Delevingne has been snapped looking tired as she arrives at Nice airport for the 66th Cannes Film Festival, as she made her way through an army of waiting photographers to get to her car. The model of the moment was rumoured to be walking the red carpet tonight after being invited to the film festival by Leonardo DiCaprio. But will she be walking that infamous walkway with the Hollywood hunk?

Leo’s latest movie The Great Gatsby premieres at the French festival tonight and according to The Sun, Leo wants both Cara and showbiz BFF Rita Ora on his arm whilst walking that red carpet.

A source said: “It’s the hottest ticket for months, they’d be daft to miss it.”

The pals are allegedly the latest ladies who Leonardo has taken a shine to and according to sources, he’s never been one to keep his ‘conquests’ on the down low in the past.

The actor was having dinner with actor Kevin Connolly and twelve women recently when he was reportedly overheard revealing all about his bedroom antics.

“Leo talked about the fact that he is sleeping with ‘multiple women’ right now,” a fellow diner tells Perez Hilton, adding: “He was totally open about it. Kevin looked at Leo and told him, ‘I want to be you.’”

Leo replied, ‘Everyone does.’ He was acting very nice, but is very arrogant.”

[From Entertainmentwise]

Well, Cara did not walk on Leo’s arm or anything, and I haven’t seen any gossip about them being seen together after the premiere, so maybe it’s not on. (Sidenote: there was gossip about Cara and Georgia May Jagger spending all of Wednesday night getting sh—faced on Cavilli’s yacht though.) Cara would be slightly different than Leo’s usual model conquests. While she does model for Victoria’s Secret, Cara’s “look” is way different than Gisele or Bar or Erin. They all looked like healthy girls with crazy genetic gifts, all sun-kissed and clean. Cara looks like a girl who knows how to party HARD. She was just photographed dropping a baggie of coke too, and she always looks like she’s coming off some epic bender. That would be a change for Leo I think. I don’t know… would Leo date Eyebrows McCokeface? He allegedly hooked up with Lindsay Lohan at one point, so maybe.

Nicole Kidman in black leather Calvin Klein in Cannes: pretty or unflattering?

Here are some photos from last night’s IFP and Calvin Klein party at the Cannes Film Festival. I feel like this used to be a bigger event…? Although I could be mistaking it for one of the other big fashion events that happen every year at Cannes. Anyway, all of the ladies we’ll discuss wore Calvin Klein, obviously, to this event. To varying degrees of success. Let’s start with Nicole Kidman in this Fall 2013 look – it’s interesting to see her in black leather, and even when Nicole doesn’t look completely amazing, she’s still interesting to look at. I think the full skirt is throwing me off here – this would seem more “Kidman” if it was a straight pencil skirt. Also: I want Nicole to go back to a darker red for her hair. This blondish shade is wrong.

Carey Mulligan wore a pretty straight-forward strapless LBD. I’m not sure if this was supposed to be a bustier and she’s just too small or whatever. It’s cute, but now I want her to wear her hair down more often.

Rooney Mara is too aloof to wear an actual color. Rooney wants to be washed out. She is not your Fashion Girl!! (Even though she’s at a fashion event at one of the biggest fashion-friendly film festivals ever.)

I like Naomie Harris so much and I think she’s gorgeous but OMG she should not wear cut-out dresses. Maybe it’s been too long since I was truly skinny (if I ever was truly skinny), but I feel like Naomie’s rib cage is especially pronounced and it’s kind of… too much. Or too little, shall we say.

Zhang Ziyi in a Carolina Herrera ball gown in Cannes: stunning or terrible?

Here’s a hodge-podge of Cannes photos that I thought you’d enjoy. They’re from various events over the past few days. Let’s start with the current Cannes Girl of the Moment, Zhang Ziyi. Zhang has been everywhere in Cannes so far, and she’s part of the jury for Un Certain Regard. Zhang started out at The Great Gatsby premiere wearing a short, spiky (gross) wig and a pants-ensemble by Christian Dior. I hate the outfit, and I loathe the wig. The short green dress is from the jury photocall, and it’s Giambattista Valli. The black-and-grey Carolina Herrera ball gown is from a premiere last night

Berenice Bejo in Louis Vuitton at the Le Passe photocall today. I’m sorry, but this ensemble looks like a (fug) pair of pajamas.

Freida Pinto in Sanchita at a premiere last night. Bad color for her, I think, but the design is okay.

Sonam Kapoor in Dolce & Gabbana at The Bling ring premiere. I’m sorry, but I hate this.

Liya Kebede in Alberta Ferretti. Doily fug.

Robin Wright at the Cannes premiere of her new film, The Congress. The dress is meh and I really wish she would just grow out her hair a little. She can still keep it short, that’s fine with me, but it’s TOO short.

Fan Bingbing in Elie Saab. Everything this chick wears is SO saccharine.

Emma Watson in Chanel at the Cannes premiere: lovely or disappointing?

Ugh, this is kind of a let-down from Emma Watson, isn’t it? These are pics from last night’s Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Bling Ring. Emma wore… Chanel. But I really didn’t think it was Chanel at all before a looked it up because… this just doesn’t read like Chanel, right? The fit is off (especially in the bust), the darting looks cheap, and this whole endeavor looks like some just-starting-out designer’s throw-away. What are you doing, Karl Lagerfeld?! The one thing I like: there are little pouch pockets on the skirt. They’re not flattering, but I like the idea.

I really liked Emma’s photocall look – she wore a cute jewel-toned dress by Christopher Kane – and I thought her styling for that look was right-on too. Ladies, you can wear less makeup during the day. In fact, you SHOULD wear less makeup for day looks. But when you’re going to an evening event, especially when it’s the red carpet for the Cannes Film Festival, you can and should do a darker evening look with your makeup. I’m struggling to see if Emma even changed up her makeup at all from day to night – her skin looks beautiful and dewy, but she seems very “undone” for the red carpet.

During the press conference for the film, Emma was asked how she prepared for her role in The Bling Ring and she admitted: “I watched a lot of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Hills, and I tried to understand the psychology of this kind of girl as much as possible. I didn’t want her to be just a parody. The accent was hard as it was a particular kind of dialect. I also thought a lot about what her parents must have been like.” Ha. She’s trying to be nice, isn’t she? She could have said, “I watching the Kardashian shows because they are the faces of vulgar famewhoring and materialism.”

Oh, and Sofia Coppola wore Louis Vuitton. I kind of love that Sofia wore a short(er) dress on the red carpet as opposed to some fancy gown. Sofia can pull it off.

Nicole Kidman in Dior at the ‘Gatsby’ Cannes premiere: amazing or ridiculous?

Once again, I kind of think Nicole Kidman deserves her own post. Hopefully this will be a preview of coming attractions for Nicole’s Cannes Film Festival fashion. This is Nicole at last night’s premiere of The Great Gatsby. Her dress is Dior.

What I love:
*I love that she didn’t go with a full-length gown.
*I love that she’s showing off her beautiful shoulders.
*I love that Nicole attempted an old-school fashion moment, and it did work – she really dominated a lot of the fashion coverage.
*I love the design of the dress, even though I kind of think it belongs on someone younger (don’t yell at me, but imagine this on Carey Mulligan!)

What I hate:
*Her hair. She was aiming for high-fashion fauxhawk and she got a Granny helmet.
*Her lipstick. She matched it to her shoes. Ugh.
*The way her upper lip bulges when she smiles.

So, all in all – Nicole had a victory. Can she keep it up? I wonder how many pieces of luggage she brought to Cannes? I wonder if she’s going to wear all-new gowns, or if she’ll pick and choose some vintage pieces? I’m so excited!

Here are some more photos from last night’s event. Naomi Harris wore Calvin Klein. It’s a beautiful, clean look and it suits her, although she doesn’t really stand out in this dress.

Fan Bingbing in Louis Vuitton. I find this whole look to be rather cloying.

Florence Welch in MiuMiu. Eh. I would have loved it if she had worn an impeccable tuxedo. This is hideous.

Freida Pinto in Gucci. I love an Indian girl in hot pink! It’s a weird love to have, I know, but she looks amazing.
