Carey Mulligan’s red, tulip-y Roland Mouret dress in London: lovely or fug?

These are photos from last night’s London Critics Circle Awards, obviously held in London. Shame was nominated for several awards, and as such, both of the stars came out to support their film – Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan even got all dressed up for the occasion. I know I focus on Fassy a lot (with good reason, he’s trying to lure me into his sweetshop-wrecking minimalist bed), but I also enjoy Carey a great deal, and I’m hoping that she ends up with an Oscar nomination for her work in Shame too. She was nominated for an Oscar for her very first lead role (An Education), so I think the Academy is already primed to like her.

Last night, Carey’s dress was this odd/lovely tulip-themed Roland Mouret. I think it’s a great choice for critics’ awards show, which often have a “business/cocktail” dress code. This Mouret isn’t too dressy, but it’s still eye-catching, feminine and beautiful. I think I might dislike it on another girl, but Carey pulls it off. PS… Her shoes are YSL. Another great pop of color.

And here’s Fassy – I believe we’ve seen him in this suit before. After yesterday’s shirtless festivities (in two posts, no less), I’m not really feeling it. I mean, the face is still beautiful, but I’d like to see this poorly-tailored suit on the ground. In my bedroom.

Carey Mulligan’s W Magazine photo shoot: gorgeous or overworked?

I know most of you don’t really give a crap about Carey Mulligan, but I really like this girl. She’s not a famewhore, she’s very talented, she makes interesting career choices, and she’s a decent interview. In Celebrity-ville, all of that goes a long way, especially when I’m sitting here, drowning in Kat-face Kardashians. Carey covers the new issue of W Magazine, mostly to promote her supporting role in Shame, where she plays the sister of Michael Fassbender’s character. People have been talking nonstop about Fassbender’s performance as the sex addict Brandon, but most critics have also noted that Carey turns in yet another wonderful, fearless performance too. You can read the full W Mag piece here, and here are some highlights:

Lynn Hirschberg: In Shame, which is out now, you play Sissy, a deeply troubled girl with an almost incestuous attachment to her brother (Michael Fassbender), a sex addict. Both characters are in search of something—anything—that will make them feel whole. Sissy, who works as a singer, is naked even when she’s clothed. She reveals too much, sleeps with the wrong men, and when she turns up unexpectedly in her brother’s spare, pristine New York City apartment, the effect is like a bomb going off: The siblings ignite each other’s self-destructive ways. Shame is unsettling and haunting. Is that why you were attracted to the project?
Carey: When I read the script, I found it terrifying. My English agents sent it to me and said, “There’s this amazing part.” For me, as an actor, it was sort of scary. I’d seen Hunger [about Bobby Sands, the IRA leader who starved himself to death in prison to protest the conflict in Northern Ireland], which was done by Steve McQueen, the director of Shame, and I thought it was just incredible. And I’d always wanted to work with Michael Fassbender, who had been cast as the brother. So, I asked to have a meeting with Steve to pitch myself for the job.

What was the meeting like?
I just talked for an hour. Steve was trying to leave, but I kept on: “No, don’t go—I don’t have the job yet!” I thought if I could keep him sitting at the table, I could persuade him to let me have the role. He kept trying to pay the bill, and I said, “No, no, no. Sit down.” He got in a cab, but I wouldn’t leave him—I got in, too. Finally he said, “I’m going to my appointment now.” And I said okay. That afternoon, I got a call saying I had the role.

You have an intense full-frontal nude scene in the film. Did you find that difficult to do?
I’ve never been comfortable with the idea of nudity. I’ve done only seminude, very innocent things in the past, and I’ve always been of the quite British mind-set that I won’t do gratuitous nudity. When it came to this, it just seemed so obvious that she is the sort of person who would have no trouble being naked in front of any family member, especially not her brother. She’s an extrovert and wants to be seen. More than anything, she wants someone to acknowledge and help her. I thought I had a week before the nude scene to go to the gym, but we shot it on my first day of filming.

Oh, my God.
Weirdly, it was fine. You take your clothes off, and you’re like, “Ah—all of you are wearing clothes, and I’m naked, ha, ha, ha.” It’s kind of fun—not that I would continue to do it. The nudity helped me dive into who she was. Once she’d been naked in front of her brother, I could go from there.

You sing in Shame. That seems scarier to me than being naked.
I’ve never sung in a movie before. The point wasn’t really that Sissy was a great singer—it was more that she attracted people. I sing “New York, New York” in the film, and Steve wanted it live. We did 15 takes—because every time I made a mistake or my voice fell out of tune or I lost my breath, we’d have to cut, and Steve wanted to do the whole thing in one go. At one point he wanted Sissy to sing something else and asked me to make up a song. He said, “You’re an artist, aren’t you? We can’t afford the rights to a famous song, so make one up.” I was walking around the room thinking, How do you write a song?! Eventually I made up this really bluesy song and sang two lines.

See, you’re an artist!
A bulls–t artist [laughs].

[From W Magazine]

I think Carey must be very impressive in person, because it seems like she gets whatever part she really wants and auditions for. She impressed Baz Luhrmann when she met him for The Great Gatsby, and lots of girls read for the part of Daisy, including BLAKE LIVELY. And Carey prevailed. I think that speaks volumes. That, and she has Emma Thompson’s stamp of approval.

Michelle Williams vs. Carey Mulligan: who did the Mia Farrow thing better?

wenn3574917

People often confuse Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan. I get it. They both chopped off their hair around the same time, both can be overly “precious” and too girlish and wispy. Both have sometimes sketchy styles. Both seem obsessed with “the Mia Farrow look” – meaning Mia Farrow’s most identifiable look in the 1970s, circa Rosemary’s Baby – the short hair, the school-girl style. Both Carey and Michelle are talented actresses with Oscar nominations under their belts, and their pick amongst the independent-film scripts (I actually think Carey is more mainstream than Michelle, though). And Carey and Michelle actually do look rather similar, although I would describe Carey as more “elfin” and Michelle as more standard-issue “pretty”.

But there are significant differences – one is British and one sometimes speaks in a hokey fake accent in interviews. One is moving past the Mia Farrow look and one isn’t. And… that’s about it, as far as superficial differences go. In any case, Michelle and Carey were both at last night’s Hollywood Film Awards. Both had short blonde hair. Both wore dark dresses (Michelle‘s is technically navy, but looks black in many photos). Both were promoting films that will likely be up for awards this year, and both received awards at the ceremony (Michelle for My Week With Marilyn, and Carey for Shame). And on and on…

Michelle must have gotten Stacy Keibler’s memo about sheer skirts, because Michelle wore this Nina Ricci gown that actually seemed uncharacteristically “sexy”. Usually Michelle hates to show off her figure. I don’t particularly like the gown, but I like that Michelle is trying to mix it up. I absolutely hate Michelle’s current cropped haircut, though.

Meanwhile, Carey Mulligan wore this black Bottega Veneta. If I’m doing a comparison with Michelle’s Nina Ricci, I like Carey’s so much better. I just think it’s a cute dress, appropriate for her age, and it’s sexy without being over the top. I like Carey’s current hair too – but I hate her makeup job here. The eyes are too dark and the lip is too nude.

Carey Mulligan is engaged to Marcus Mumford after just five months

mulliganmumford
It was only the end of March when we first heard that British actress Carey Mulligan, 26, was dating British singer Marcus Mumford, 24. Mumford is the lead singer of the Grammy nominated band Mumford and Sons and you might know them from their hit The Cave. Things seem to be going very well for these two, because if The Sun is accurate Marcus popped the question with a diamond ring while they were having a weekend away. I wonder who The Sun paid off or whose phone they listened in on to get that piece of information.

THEY’RE keeping mum about it – but actress Carey Mulligan is believed to be engaged to her folk rock fella Marcus Mumford.

The Mumford & Sons singer is thought to have popped the question at the weekend in a posh hotel.

Oscar-nominated Carey, 26, spent the intimate break at £250-a-night Babington House in Somerset showing guests her new diamond ring.

An onlooker said: “Carey looked like the cat who had got the cream. She was wearing a beautiful ring and didn’t seem to mind who saw it.

“They were stuck to each other like glue. She was doing most of the talking and he was hanging on her every word.”

The loved-up pair have only been dating for five months after meeting when he performed in Nashville, Tennessee.

[From The Sun.co.uk]

So Carey must have flown straight back to the UK after her gig at ComicCon on Thursday to promote Drive. Here’s a link to photos of the place where they were allegedly staying and it looks amazing. What a romantic place that must have been to get engaged. It sounds quick to get engaged after less than six months, but maybe they’ll wait a while before they make it official. If they do get married Carey will probably keep her name for professional purposes, but she would also be cute as Carey Mumford or Carey Mulligan Mumford. There’s something so practical-sounding about that name, like a tough but caring character in a British drama.

Here’s a video of Carey and Marcus outside a Mumford and Son’s gig in Arizona in late April. They dance around at about :20 in and then hug until about :35. They look really playful and sweet together. Congratulations to the two of them! I have a lot of respect for Carey and it looks like she found a decent guy.

Carey Mulligan in a cutout shirt at ComicCon – cute or what was she thinking?

fp_7634429_mulligan_carey_f
From far away, like just seeing the thumbnail photos, I really like this outfit on Carey Mulligan. Assuming the strange panels missing on the top are filled with white fabric, this looks like that dumb bright color block trend done right. Nothing is clashing, nothing is flashing (again ignoring the top) and those red pumps are adorable. The canary yellow asymmetric stripe is just the right amount of bright color to pop against her long, flattering cobalt blue skirt. It’s striking and not jarring like so many of these outfits lately.

carey_mulligan_2_wenn344547
There’s the problem, though, of the cut out parts on the top. It’s as if Carey can’t just wear a long skirt and top without showing some skin. I can’t fault her too much for it as she has a conservative dress style normally. She’s not a biscuit flasher and she usually looks somewhat fashion-forward without being a fashion victim. She takes calculated risks, which was probably what she thought she was doing here. It’s not really working, but at least her whole midriff isn’t showing.

carey_mulligan_3_wenn344548
I wrote all that up based on those photos at the top where she’s wearing the gorgeous red pumps with a red bangle, and then I saw another set of photos where she switched them for tan studded sandal flats. These are even worse with that outfit. Still, she’s lovely and this isn’t fug as much as just bizarre. She almost got it right.

Carey is promoting Drive, in which she co-stars with Ryan Gosling. (Swoon!) On the panel at Comic-Con, she joked “My job in this film was to fall in love with Ryan Gosling—rough.” She also explained how Gosling got into character for his role as a stunt driver by learning “everything there was to know about cars. He built his own car for the film…and [he learned] stunt driving! He was a machine. Everyone loved him, he was a dream, he was amazing.” We would expect nothing less.

E! has a really good story from the director about how he wooed Gosling for the film. Here are links to two clips of Drive on YouTube. It has a very realistic, gritty feel. It also features Bryan Cranston and Christina Hendricks, and is out in the U.S. on September 17.

Carey Mulligan has a new musician boyfriend, Marcus Mumford

Mumford & Sons
British actress Carey Mulligan, who was last linked with prettyboy actor Tom Sturridge after her split with Shia LaBeouf last fall, may have a new boyfriend. The Daily Mail reports that she’s dating musician Marcus Mumford, 24, of the band Mumford and Sons. I saw this guy perform at the Grammys with his band and then with Bob Dylan. He’s such a great musician, I remember being so impressed with him at the time, and I kind of love this story. I can’t believe he’s just 24 with that kind of talent.

British starlet Carey Mulligan is enjoying a whirlwind romance with Marcus Mumford, lead singer with folk rockers Mumford & Sons.

The 25-year-old An Education actress is said to be ‘besotted’ with the English singer and has flown to the UK from her base in New York to be with him.

She and Marcus, 24, are currently enjoying a romantic weekend together in Buckinghamshire after spending last week in the Orkney Islands.

‘They’ve also been spending time at Marcus’s London home in Shepherd’s Bush,’ says a close friend.

The pair first got together in Nashville, Tennessee, last month.

A spy says: ‘Marcus invited Carey to watch him play a secret show in the basement of his friend Mike Harris’s home in Nashville. She sat in the front row and while he was singing Marcus looked down at Carey and she blushed. It was clear they had chemistry.

‘Afterwards they went to the City House restaurant and dined with friends but they sat together and acted like a couple.

‘Carey’s hoping they can spend more time together when Marcus flies back to America next month for a major tour with his band. He’s hired a vintage train instead of a tour bus and has asked Carey to join him for the trip. It’s early days but they seem to enjoy each other’s company.’

[From The Daily Mail]

That all sounds so romantic – they’re spending weekends together and he’s asked her to go on tour with him on his special old timey train. I hope this works out for them. From what I know of Carey she’s very down to earth (she stayed in a Best Western for a while) and doesn’t seem to be letting her success get to her head. I don’t know much about this guy except for what I’ve seen on stage. They look like they would make a very nice couple though.

Carey Mulligan in violet Prada: gorgeous, adorable or meh?

wenn3159676

These are some photos of Carey Mulligan at the Palm Springs International Film Festival over the weekend. Her dress is Prada – isn’t it pretty? The perfect amount of sparkle, not all assy and booby and trashy. I love this dress on her. And I even like the kind of awkwardness of her hair – it doesn’t look as adorable as it did a few months ago, and it’s obvious she’s trying to grow it out a bit. I’m kind of in love with her anyway, so it’s not shocking that I find everything she does to be adorable.

At the film festival, Carey spent a little time backstage with Jake Gyllenhaal, apparently. He was there to promote… Love & Other Drugs, I guess. And he’s fresh off his breakup with Taylor Swift. At the age of 25, Carey is only 4 years older than Taylor Swift. But it’s an important four years, and she and Jake would be an appropriate match, if you’re trying to set him up with someone. Lainey at LaineyGossip is trying to make it happen. I’m not feeling it, though, mostly because my opinion of Jake has fallen so far with this Swifty junk, and I don’t want his douche anywhere near my girl. Carey needs to be with someone more substantial, in my opinion. Perhaps an older man… oh, no, SHE NEEDS TO BE WITH RYAN GOSLING. That’s it. That’s who I would set her up with. Oh, and she and Gosling just worked together on Faster. Gosling needs to get on that. Especially because Blake Lively is little more than a giant time-suck, relationship-wise.

Carey Mulligan’s hair: awkward, funky, or kind-of cute?

Carey Mulligan is one of my favorite rising stars – she’s really emerged as a contender for decades-long girl-crush potential, like Cate Blanchett or Meryl Streep. She’s talented, she funny, she’s interesting, and she makes interesting career choices. But unlike, say, a Blanchett, Carey’s style is still very questionable. Over the weekend, she did two big public appearances at the Dubai Film Festival. For one appearance, she did this odd hair and a ball gown by Erdem Moralioglu that looks oddly like a Chanel coacktail dress I remember on Blake Lively.

Then, the second appearance… slicked back hair, making her look like a ferret.

Note to Carey: you do not have the face for this hair. I realize that after she chopped off her locks for a very cute and endearing pixie cut, there could potentially be tragedy in the months to come. Here it is – the awkward hair-growing-out stage. The stage where she can’t really do anything with it that doesn’t look like hell.

Carey Mulligan tells Elle UK that a doctor tried to make her do Botox

carey1

Here are the two covers for Carey Mulligan’s appearance as Elle UK’s January cover girl. The photos are by David Slijper. I think the images are very striking, and I love my girl and everything, but something about the angle and the hair is aging her. I don’t hate it though – Carey is one of those Cate Blanchett-types who can play anything from teenager to 50 years old. Speaking of Carey looking old-ish, that’s kind of what the cover interview is about. Carey describes an incident where a doctor (!) told her that she should Botox. For. Real.

At just 25, Carey Mulligan is one of Hollywood’s freshest-faced stars. Yet the British actress was told to get Botox in order to look more youthful, she has disclosed.

Of her visit to a Los Angeles dermatologist, Mulligan recalled: “I said, ‘I have some lines here under my eye and they’re annoying, what can you do?’ He looked at my face and said, ‘We’ll just drop some Botox in here and here…’.

“I said, ‘What the —-? I’m only 25, are you joking?’ So I can’t move my face? Isn’t that, well, the antithesis of what I’m trying to do as an actress? Only in LA would someone try and give you Botox when you’re 25 years old.”

The star of An Education has won plaudits for her quirky style but claims to feel “intensely uncomfortable” on the red carpet.

“I’ve never felt like a sexy person. I’ve always felt like a sensible person. I’ve always felt absurd wearing anything revealing,” she told Elle magazine.

The actress also confided that she loathes her much-copied gamine hairstyle. “I hate my hair. After An Education, I had a small part in Michael Mann’s film Public Enemies and he wanted me to dye it white blonde, and it wrecked my hair. Literally, ruined it. It was falling apart, fried. So I had to cut it off. I cried.”

Although tipped to land a second Oscar nomination for Never Let Me Go, Mulligan admitted to disappointment at missing out on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the forthcoming Stieg Larsson adaptation. “I auditioned for it but I didn’t get the part,” she said, adding that watching another actress play the part would be “agony”.

[From The Telegraph]

The old saying in Hollywood is that you should never tell what roles you passed on (or what size a man‘s dong is), but I think saying what parts you auditioned for and lost is fine. It actually makes me like her even more thinking that she’s so emotionally invested in roles she only auditioned for.

As for the Botox thing – WTF, doctors? She’s cute as a button, she can move her face, and she’s a great little actress. Not all actresses have to come from The Starlet Starter Kit. Dumbasses.

Carey Mulligan in red at the British Independent Film Awards: beautiful or fug?

brit_indie_award_08_wenn3127945

Last night was the British Independent Film Awards in London, and many of this season’s awards-favorites came out to play. Here is Carey Mulligan, in an orange-red Prabal Gurung dress… I love it. On someone else, it might suck. On Carey, I adore it, especially how she’s styled it, with the simple black peep-toes and the slicked-back hair. She looks amazing, in my opinion. So chic.

brit_indie_award_10_wenn3127947

Helena Bonham-Carter was in attendance too, looking like she’s wearing a costume from Alice In Wonderland. Ugh. I mean, she’s HBC, I can’t hate. But seriously, Helena. Enough.

brit_indie_awards_04_wenn3128009

Colin Firth and his beautiful wife Livia. I can’t say I love what Livia is wearing, but Colin looks dashing!

brit_indie_film_02_wenn3128368

Oh, Ralph. He’s thinking about how he wants to bite you. Swoon.

brit_indie_awards_17_wenn3128022

I don’t know who Nick Moran is, I just know that we’ve gotten requests for him on HGF. Really?

brit_indie_film_10_wenn3128376

Your new Sherlock Holmes, the perfectly named Benedict Cumberbatch.

And Martin Freeman! My mom loves him. He’s dressed like an old man.
