Kim Kardashian wore a figure-hugging cut-out dress in Kuwait: inappropriate?

From what I know of Kuwait (which is honestly not that much), it’s one of the more “modern” countries in the Middle East. Which means a lot when you’re talking about women’s issues, specifically when seen through the prism of Islam. Still, if I was visiting Kuwait, I would still make the effort to dress and act conservatively. I’m not saying I would wear a hijab, I’m just saying… I would cover my cleavage and try to show some modesty out of respect. When in Rome, and all that. Or “when in Kuwait City” as it is.

So here are some photos of Kim opening a Millions of Milkshakes shop at a huge mall in Kuwait City yesterday. True, this outfit is “modest”… for Kim’s usual trashy, showy style. But I’m still kind of uncomfortable with all of the skin she’s showing. Maybe that’s wrong on my part… maybe what she’s doing here is incredibly feminist, only in a famewhore-y way that is hard to recognize. Kuwaiti religious figures are pissed off because… you know. She’s a twice-divorced, scantily-clad woman famous for a sex tape. Kuwaiti cultural activists are pissed off too because Kuwait regularly bans artists, musicians and actors from entering the country and Kim’s entrance is being called an “unacceptable hypocrisy.”

Something nice: Kim was mobbed by fans at the shop opening, and I genuinely think it’s nice that she made the effort to personally go to Kuwait to open a milkshake shop. You know? Real celebrities (meaning, movie stars) wouldn’t do that. Kim posed for lots of photos, she signed autographs and made milkshakes. She has fans there, and she treated them with respect.

Next stop for Kim… Bahrain. And the Bahrainis are PISSED. Bahrain’s Parliament tried to pass a resolution banning Kim from stepping foot on Bahrain’s soil, but the resolution didn’t pass. I wonder why it didn’t pass? Could it be that many of the politicians actually watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians?

PS… That gold belt is hideous.

Diane Kruger in black, two- piece Rochas: avant-garde or nonsensical fug?

Here are some photos from last night’s Miss Golden Globe Awards, which was hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press. I wasn’t aware of the fact that there’s now an awards ceremony (?) for Miss Golden Globes. Traditionally, there is a “Miss Golden Globe” selected every year around this time, and she’s always second-generation Hollywood. This year’s Miss Golden Globe is Francesca Eastwood (above, with her mother Frances Fisher, and daughter of Clint). Some other Miss Golden Globes of years past include Melanie Griffith and Rumer Willis. For real. The thing is seen as an honor, but all you really do is get to hand the Golden Globe statues to the presenters, and you usher people off the stage. That’s it.

So, some fashion from the night… Diane Kruger wore this Rochas dress which, to me, is tragic. Diane can pull off some bizarre looks, but I don’t understand why she even attempts some consistently weird stuff. This outfit is nonsensical.

Lea Michele in… unknown. It feels bridesmaid-y and Easter-y to me, which isn’t to say I don’t like it. I just don’t think it was right for the occasion, I guess. The sleeves are bugging me too.

Olivia Munn’s dress/romper is horrible. This looks cheap and tacky and like she’s a Las Vegas waitress.

And finally, here’s Jeremy Piven. This is so gross. Jeremy Piven is a well-known purveyor of the barely-legal starlets, and here he is, sauntering around the Miss Golden Globe event? GROSS. I’m surprised Wilmer Valderrama wasn’t there too.

Anne Hathaway’s black gown at Tokyo ‘Les Mis’ premiere: pretty or unflattering?

Here are some photos of Amanda Seyfried, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway at the Tokyo premiere of Les Miserables today (yesterday? tomorrow?). I’ve spent the last 20 minutes looking for a designer ID on Anne’s dress, but I haven’t been able to find it yet. It looks like a Marc Jacobs design, or Marc Jacobs-inspired, so it’s either Jacobs or Louis Vuitton… or maybe Prada. I have no idea, but I’ll update if I find out. Whatever it is, I’m not a big fan. I like that Anne defaults to black dresses a lot, mostly because she looks great in black and she’s tried worse alternatives too, but I’m not crazy about the skirt and the hem on this dress. And she just wore a strappy Victoria Beckham a few weeks ago too, so the top part feels too familiar. I do know Amanda’s designer ID: she’s wearing Brood.

Hugh looks nice… but he always looks nice, doesn’t he? Lost in the buzz about whether Anne Hathaway is going to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress for this film (and whether she’ll win), I think many critics are kind of forgetting to talk about Hugh Jackman, the actual star of the film. I have a theory: since Hugh Jackman’s Broadway turns, he’s become known as a big song-and-dance man. When he delivers the goods in Les Miserables, he’s not met with praise but rather a “Fine. We knew you could do it. Whatever.” That’s unfair to him. I would like to see Hugh get a nomination too, just because I think he would really appreciate it, and it would be nice to see him on every red carpet this awards season.

Salma Hayek in Stella McCartney at British Fashion Awards: terrible or cute?

Here are more photos from last night’s British Fashion Awards in London. I’m splitting the pics up into two groups at random, so just sit back and enjoy! Salma Hayek was on hand to present the Designer of the Year Award to Stella McCartney, and Salma was one of several women wearing Stella’s terrible designs. Before I realized Salma’s tasseled monstrosity was designed by Stella, I was already thinking to myself, “Why does Salma do this? Why doesn’t she say ‘no’ to designers who put her in dresses that make her look like this?” For the record, Salma is NOT this… this “thick” looking in most clothes. But you wouldn’t know it because of the awful dress. You know why? PEPLUM FRINGE. As in, the dress has a fringed peplum. The f—k?

I thought poor Gemma Arterton was Lana del Rey! RIGHT? Poor Gemma is in Stella McCartney too, but you already knew that because the outfit is so awful and poorly made and unflattering. Poor Gemma. She’s so pretty, she doesn’t deserve this.

I don’t hate Livia Firth’s dress. I actually think it’s a beautiful color for a woman with her coloring. And if you’re going to wear what is basically an oversized sack, it helps if you’re built like Livia – tall and thin.

Alexa Chung won some kind of style award – like, she’s the most stylish British woman or something. I really don’t get it, Great Britain. I do not understand why Alexa is a “thing”.

Princess Beatrice was there! She wore Erdem. It’s kind of fussy for someone so young, but she looks pretty overall.

Here’s Pixie Geldof (daughter of Bob Geldof; sister of Peaches Geldof)… Pixie usually has some kind of cropped peroxide blonde hair, so she looks very different here. I actually really like this look on her. She’s a “model” by the way.

Duchess Kate, bangsy in a MaxMara coat in Cambridge: lovely or tragic?

More photos of the Cambridges! Earlier today, I covered those awful photos of Duchess Kate debuting her Farrah-style bangs, which went down two nights ago. These are new pics of William and Kate in Cambridge today. This is their visit to Cambridge since becoming the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, so… there’s that. The pics are of their arrival at the train station, and at the opening of the new Peterborough City Hospital. Since I already wrote a ton about Kate earlier, let’s just do some bullet points for this appearance:

*Kate’s pretty coat is MaxMara (price: £980). I have a similar one that is Calvin Klein, only mine isn’t belted – is that little ribbon belt part of Kate’s coat, or did she add it? I like mine better. Her booties are Aquatalia. They’re meh. But I’m not a big fan of ankle booties anyway.

*I think Kate’s hair started out as sausage-curled perfection, but it was raining for a bit and it was very windy, so her hair flattened a bit, and it was blowing in her face a lot (giving her a perfectly opportunity to fuss with it endlessly, as she loves to do). When an onlooker told Kate she liked Kate’s new hair, Kate allegedly replied, “I’m not sure about it. It’s a bit windy today.” Which is a perfectly good reason why she should pull her hair back for some appearances.

*William and Kate received several baby-themed gifts from the spectators/commoners. They accepted those gifts with grace and appreciation, and they also played with some babies in the crowd.

*Obviously, Kate kept making physical references to her midsection, but she always does that. I’m just saying that if you think “Kate touching her stomach” = babies, you shouldn’t take it as a sign. That being said, it wouldn’t surprise me if she was pregnant.

*Something nice: I feel like Kate may have finally grasped the concepts of “day makeup” and “evening makeup”. I swear, her makeup looks just a tad lighter in these pics. She usually cakes it on and does a really heavy eye for day appearances.

*Something nice: I honestly don’t hate her bangs/layers/fringe when she’s in motion, and when her hair is straighter. The sausage curls are too much, and that make her hair look too fussy, but I like the layers when everything is somewhat straight.

Selena Gomez in D&G at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball: lovely or too mature?

Here are some photos from last night’s 8th Annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC. From what I remember of past Snowflake Balls, they usually get a pretty decent turnout, and there are usually some solid A and B-list celebrities. But this year’s Snowflake Ball does feel a little… basic. I mean, I’m happy to see Selena Gomez and Katy Perry in attendance, but surely UNICEF could have gotten a few more “bigger” names? Anyway, I think my favorite of the night was Selena. She wore Dolce & Gabbana… I really like it. It’s occasion-appropriate, it’s flattering, it’s not trashy. I love her hair here too.

Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace… the dress is okay. I get that Uma just had a baby recently and she still wants to be covered up, plus it’s winter and everything… but I think the thick velvet adds weight. A lot of you have asked if Uma is tweaked too – I don’t think so. I think her face looks different because of the baby weight.

Katy Perry in Naeem Khan – I love the color on her and I think the dress (and cape!) overall is a nice choice for the event. My one complaint: Katy needs to stop parting her hair down the middle. It’s not flattering to her face, and it’s just not a great hairstyle for her.

Kelly Ripa looks… eh. I don’t like this dress on her, and I think she’s tweaking. I’m also getting a weird vibe from Mark. Is he over it?

The Bush girls!! Jenna Bush-Hager looks especially busty. Pregnant boobs maybe? Is Dubya about to become a grandpappy?

Matt Lauer and his wife reunited for the red carpet. Ten bucks says they were fighting by the second course.

Dita Von Teese in Jenny Packham at British Fashion Awards: awesome or awful?

These are photos from last night’s British Fashion Awards, held in London. I actually really like this event – I guess it’s comparable to the American CFDAs, only I feel like the British Fashion Awards are more rock ‘n roll, and less stuffy. Let’s start with Dita Von Teese, shall we? Dita wore this fantastic Jenny Packham gown which I absolutely adore. You know what a sucker I am for a well-cut long-sleeved gown, and I love this. It suits Dita too.

Amber Valetta was one my favorite ladies of the evening – I love her and I love this gown. Yes, it’s kind of nipply, but she pulls it off without looking too trashy. I love the color!

Rita Ora in Vivienne Westwood. We’ve seen this dress many different times (in different colors), to varying results. Rita’s body looks good, but her face tells me that she’s not comfortable. Perhaps it’s the corseted waist?

Lily Allen was another one of my favorites – this maternity gown looks amazing on her, and it’s the perfect color and cut. She’s looks happy and healthy. I hope all is well with her.

Cara Delivigne won “Model of the Year”. I wouldn’t have been able to pick her out of a lineup. And that Burberry minidress is… interesting. I’m surprised Kristen Stewart hasn’t worn it yet.

And because it’s something of a running joke around here, here’s Stella McCartney picking up her award for Designer of the Year. THIS IS WHAT SHE WORE. Her own design, of course. Because WHY NOT wear a faux-wrap, strapless, bejeweled, tapered-legged jumpsuit? Because of course.

Zoe Saldana in royal blue Preen to announce the Spirit Awards: lovely or dull?

Zoe Saldana

Last night, Zoe Saldana and Anna Kendrick led a press conference to announce the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards Nominations, and they were joined by Common as well. Lucky them, right? I’d love to be accompanied nearly anywhere by Common, and the Spirit Awards are sort of exciting too because they are known as a good indication of what will be nominated at the Oscars.

I’ve included a partial list of the nominees at the bottom of this post, but it looks like Harvey Weinstein will be very satisfied that The Silver Linings Playbook leads the pack with several nominations including Best Feature, Best Female Lead (Jennifer Lawrence), and Best Male Lead (Bradley “Friendly Neighborhood Serial Killer” Cooper). Does this mean that we’ll be seeing BCoop as an Oscar nominee? Bizarre. Oh, and Matthew McConaughey has been nominated twice, including Best Supporting Actor for Magic Mike! Kaiser should be pleased with this development, since she thinks McConaughey deserves an Oscar nod that role, and I agree. He was pretty fantastic in that movie.

Now let’s talk about the fashion here. Zoe wore a very simple Preen dress in royal blue, and the color looks absolutely smashing against her skin tone and hair. I think she looks great here and much better than her usual fashion choices. The dress is playful and has a lovely shape to it, which balances out her usual severe manner of dressing. Zoe seems like she had a lot of fun in this dress and at the event. She’s also wearing Rupert Sanderson heels (which are just okay), keeping the jewelry minimal, and highlighting her long, flowing hair. I think the lipstick would have been too much under other circumstances, but the bold red color is a nice contrast against the blue of the dress.

Anna Kendrick looked so pretty at this event in a Halston Heritage dress that I’d like to label as ballerina pink but was probably more of blush pink/champagne. The dress was very flattering to her figure, and I am loving her silver Sergio Rossi shoes. Anna’s fashion sometimes deviates a bit too quirky for my tastes, but she’s a dream here.

Quvenzhane Wallis, Beasts of the Southern Wild
Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Smashed

Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook
John Hawkes, The Sessions
Thure Lindhardt, Keep the Lights On
Matthew McConaughey, Killer Joe
Wendell Pierce, Four

Best Supporting Female
Rosemarie DeWitt, Your Sister’s Sister
Ann Dowd, Compliance
Helen Hunt, The Sessions
Brit Marling, Sound of My Voice

Best Supporting Male

David Oyelowo, Middle of Nowhere
Michael Pena, End of Watch
Sam Rockwell, Seven Psychopaths
Bruce Willis, Moonrise Kingdom

[From Spirit Awards 2013]

The complete list of nominees is available here. I’m just so pleased that McConaughey got nominated for both supporting and lead this year for his work in indie films. This is a major step up from the romcom hell within which he was stuck for several years. McConaughey is back, baby! But seriously, how did Bruce Willis get nominated for Moonrise Kingdom over Bill Murray? That man deserves all the awards forever.

Kim Kardashian’s black jumpsuit & simple styling: one of her best looks ever?

Go ahead and yell at me. I love the way Kim Kardashian looks in these photos. I love her outfit and I love her styling. I’ve always wanted her to go with cleaner, simply, more classic pieces, and I’ve always wanted her to stop with the Croydon facelifts. So with her hair styled but loose, and with these wonderful slacks, I think she’s achieved it. Go ahead and scream!!! I DON’T CARE. I would wear the hell out of those slacks. Other sites are calling this a “jumpsuit” but I really think these are separates. I think it’s a pair of pants and a sleeveless blouse. But whatever. I love it.

Two pieces of somewhat interesting Kim K. news: one, Kim is going to be spending her New Year’s in Las Vegas. Kim is getting PAID. HuffPo says that Kim is probably going to make an appearance at 1 OAK at the Mirage, and she’ll be paid $300,000 for her troubles. The second story is a sad one – apparently, Kim and Kanye flew to Oklahoma after Thanksgiving so that Kanye could introduce Kim to his extended family, and he took her to his mother’s grave:

Kim Kardashian’s family have welcomed Kanye West like a long lost brother. And in a poignant sign of how strong he considers their relationship, the rapper has taken Kim to visit his late mother’s grave.

The Mercy rapper – who has been dating the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star for eight months – was spotted visiting his mother Donda West’s graveside in Oklahoma with his 32-year-old girlfriend on Friday.

A source close to the Kardashians confirmed to MailOnline that the trip took place, adding that after the vigil the couple visited other family members in the area. A source told gossip website RadarOnline.com: ‘Kanye brought Kim to Oklahoma City the day after Thanksgiving to pay respects to his mother and to meet his mother’s side of the family. This was her first time meeting them.’

The 35-year-old rapper’s mother died on November 10, 2007 of complications from cosmetic surgery at the age of 58. Another insider suggested the trip is proof the couple are heading towards marriage, saying: ‘This was a really monumental moment for Kanye because he adored his mother. He wouldn’t have brought Kim there unless he was completely in love with her.’

Kanye is rumoured to have given Kim a promise ring and wants to marry her as soon as her divorce from basketball player Kris Humphries is official. The couple celebrated Thanksgiving with Kim’s family on Thursday before flying to Oklahoma together.

[From The Mail]

From what I can find, there are no paparazzi photos of Kim and Kanye in Oklahoma, so if Kanye did take Kim to meet his family, she resisted the urge to famewhore for several days. Which is a genuinely good sign. I do think they’re for real… and I think that right now, Kanye wants to marry her. But let’s wait until her divorce comes through and see how long that takes, and whether or not Kanye is still around.

Emily Blunt in white Calvin Klein at the Gotham Awards: pretty or too plain?

Here we have some photos from the Gotham Film Awards at Cipriani in NY last night, sponsored by the Independent Filmmaker Project, which The LA Times describes as “the largest organization of independent filmmakers in the U.S.” The LA Times also has a list of the winners if you’re interested.

Emily Blunt took home part of the Ensemble Award for Your Sister’s Sister, also starring Mark Duplass and Rosemarie DeWitt. (I haven’t seen it, but it came out this summer and you can get the DVD through Netflix. If it’s not on streaming I’m not likely to watch it.) As far as her fashion, she wore this bizarre, tight, paper white Calvin Klein cutout dress. I really dislike this dress and I especially dislike her silver Jimmy Choo sandal-like pumps. I guess there are worse cutout dresses, but overall this is very plain and underwhelming. Plus it’s squeezing her girls in tight. Can she even take a full breath? Her hair and makeup are really pretty, though. She’s had some Botox and it shows, but if she lays off it for a while it will settle.

In contrast we have a radiant Amy Adams, whose dress I love but whose styling leaves something to be desired. Her eye makeup is way too heavy, including her blush. (Or it could be the lighting.) Still, it’s Amy so I can’t find too much fault with her look. I do love her Giorgio Armani black gown with that glorious structural detail at the bodice. This is how you do matching shoes without it looking like overkill. What a knockout she is.

Here’s Marion Cotillard, who was honored with a career achievement award at the ceremony. She’s in a navy blue v-neck Christian Dior gown with a full skirt. The jacket collar falls flat for me, and overall this dress just looks very conservative. Still, she’s Marion, she’s not trying to show skin or be flashy.

Look at how lovely she is. Dior probably has some of the most talented makeup artists in the world.

Here’s Matt Damon, who was also honored with a career achievement. His wife Luciana’s dotted 50s dress is both sexy and demure and I love her hair. If she has extensions, and I’m betting she does, they’re very well done. One complaint: I don’t love her contrasting shoes,

Matt looks good bald, doesn’t he?

Matt’s other BFF, John Krasinski, was also there last night. The anti-fracking film they wrote together, Promised Land, is out in the US in wide release on January 4th, but it’s out in limited release on December 28th. Just in time for this year’s awards.

Look at this face for a moment and see if you can guess who this is…. Are you ready? It’s Jared Leto! Yes he looks like a corpse, but he’s starring in that movie filming now with Matthew McConaughey, The Dallas Buyers Club, and he’s also playing an AIDS victim and transvestite. (Hence the eyebrows. Fill them with some powder when you’re off set, Jared!) So this extreme weight loss is for a role. Jared sure knows how to yo-yo and he’s been on both extremes now.
