Nick Lachey’s “What’s Left of Me” CD Release party

Nick Lachey’s new album “What’s Left of Me” is a clear and heartbreaking exploration of his very public breakup from fellow singer Jessica Simpson. Critics are saying the music is decent pop, if a bit melodramatic and depressing:

Are you reeling from a painful breakup? Going through a divorce? Unwilling to let go of an erstwhile lover?

If so, then Nick Lachey’s new solo album, “What’s Left of Me,” could prove cathartic; If not, it might leave you a bit depressed…

The disc - a somber, soulful, angsty collection of 12 ballads - is a slickly produced, raw-nerved confessional of his heartbreak and an open letter to Simpson.

In “Shades of Blue,” one of the album’s best tracks, Lachey pines for a lost love, foolishly awaiting her return. He asks, “Why did you have to leave? Why did you have to set me free? Why did you have to go?” But he takes an angrier tone in “I Do it For You,” expressing his wish to see her “bleed and see how it feels…”

Realizing that he must move on (”I don’t want to waste another day stuck in the shadow of my mistakes”), the title track has Lachey telling a potential lover to make him “whole once again.”

His brooding songs, sung in a clear tenor, span different stages of grief, sometimes within the same track - there’s resentment, regret and acceptance in “I Can’t Hate You Anymore” - until he reaches his “Resolution,” pledging his commitment to let go. Finally.

Set to a pop soundtrack, his pain becomes palpable, raw, universal. His pain becomes ours.

The NY Daily News is reporting that Nick decided not to respond to former miss Kentucky Lizzie Arnold, who he was supposedly dating in January. She was said to have sent him several voice and text messages in a vain attempt to get in touch with him before the Kentucky Derby. He was busy with Petra Nemcova the next day, so why would he bother with a past hookup?

Hot Hollywood Awards: huge picture post

Us Weekly’s Hot Hollywood Awards were held Wednesday night. Jessica Alba had a near nip-slip that resulted in some cute picture of her pulling her dress strap up. (Wireimage did not capture this, so you’ll have to see it everywhere else.)

Despite Us Weekly’s content, stars were pleased to show up for the party.

Jennifer Love Hewitt said she has ended up several times on the magazine’s worst-dressed list, but was still tickled that she won the hottest body award in the new issue. Both Hewitt and Jesse McCartney showed up with shorter ‘dos. And Tori Spelling confirmed that she has hired a wedding planner for her upcoming nuptials to Dean McDermott. Still, she insisted she’s planning something small. “I just want to look good for him,” Spelling said.

Stacy Keibler wants to set up Nick Lachey

Stacy Keibler of “Dancing with the Stars” says that she just “loves” Nick Lachey and wants to make sure the soon-to-be-divorced crooner is not lonely:

No - they aren’t dating, but her new project is trying to find Nick a decent girl to date.

Extra TV reported on Thursday night that Nick (one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood) has picked up his own personal cupid: “Dancing with the Stars” stunner Stacy Keibler.

Keibler told designers Chip and Pepper that she’s looking to make a love connection. “I’m trying to get Nick a good, quality girl,” she said.

“I love him. I think he’s a fantastic, great guy.”

Lachey may have been hurt that Kristin Cavalleri was spotted making out with her ex this weekend while Lachey was away promoting his new single, as we reported yesterday. Lachey was said to have dated Cavalleri, although the Laguna Beach star denies it.

Lachey is also making headlines with the news that his new melancholy single was written on the very day that Jessica Simpson broke up with him:

Lachey was planning on spending last year’s Thanksgiving holiday (NOV05) with his wife in Texas, until he received a phone call from her telling him she was ending their relationship. He says the song was recorded, “The day before Thanksgiving, which was basically the day that Jessica told me she wanted to get a divorce.”

It sounds like Lachey is a sensitive guy, and that he’s getting his revenge by cashing in on his pain. Like most everyone, we’re rooting for him and hope he gets the cash settlement he deserves in his divorce.
