Rooney Mara in a Dior bib- dress in Cannes: annoying, aloof or exhausting?

Here are some photos of Rooney Mara in Dior at the Ain’t Them Bodies Saints premiere. I think this was a premiere just in general, not in competition for the Palme, either that or it’s in competition for Un Certain Regarde. I don’t know. Rooney’s Dior ensemble is a variation on Jennifer Lawrence’s black-and-white premiere dress, did you know that? I think J-Law wore it better. I just don’t get what Rooney is trying to achieve with her fashion. Is she trying to show us that she’s so avant-garde and special that she can wear fug clothing and pull it off? Or does she honestly think she looks cute? Ugh.

Rooney was just announced as the new face of Calvin Klein fragrances too. So much for her claims that she’s NOT A MODEL and she doesn’t want to be. You can see the first image from her CK campaign here.

Doutzen Kroes in Calvin Klein (the white) and Versace (the pink). The Versace isn’t that good and it washes her out. The CK dress is decent, but I feel like the top part is ill-fitting.

Cheryl Cole in Zuhair Murad. Game show hostess.

Jane Fonda in Atelier Versace. I’m sorry, but everything here looks straight out of the ‘80s. I mean, good for her for still looking so good and everything, but this photo looks like it was taken in 1985.

Lea Seydoux in Louis Vuitton. She’s a beautiful woman in a so-so dress.

Paz Vega has been everywhere in Cannes. I kind of think she’s “working” the festival, you know? She wore this Stéphane Rolland Spring 2013 Couture gown which is absolutely terrible. Jennifer Lawrence wore a Dior gown like this at the SAGs this year, so I guess Rolland is copying Dior. What a stupid design idea to “copy”. God.

Photocall pics from Inside Llewyn Davis, with Garrett Hedlund, Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac. Garrett looks AMAZING. But Justin thinks he’s the “star”!

Nicole Kidman in black leather Calvin Klein in Cannes: pretty or unflattering?

Here are some photos from last night’s IFP and Calvin Klein party at the Cannes Film Festival. I feel like this used to be a bigger event…? Although I could be mistaking it for one of the other big fashion events that happen every year at Cannes. Anyway, all of the ladies we’ll discuss wore Calvin Klein, obviously, to this event. To varying degrees of success. Let’s start with Nicole Kidman in this Fall 2013 look – it’s interesting to see her in black leather, and even when Nicole doesn’t look completely amazing, she’s still interesting to look at. I think the full skirt is throwing me off here – this would seem more “Kidman” if it was a straight pencil skirt. Also: I want Nicole to go back to a darker red for her hair. This blondish shade is wrong.

Carey Mulligan wore a pretty straight-forward strapless LBD. I’m not sure if this was supposed to be a bustier and she’s just too small or whatever. It’s cute, but now I want her to wear her hair down more often.

Rooney Mara is too aloof to wear an actual color. Rooney wants to be washed out. She is not your Fashion Girl!! (Even though she’s at a fashion event at one of the biggest fashion-friendly film festivals ever.)

I like Naomie Harris so much and I think she’s gorgeous but OMG she should not wear cut-out dresses. Maybe it’s been too long since I was truly skinny (if I ever was truly skinny), but I feel like Naomie’s rib cage is especially pronounced and it’s kind of… too much. Or too little, shall we say.

Blake Lively in a tiered Gucci ball gown at the Met Gala: not punk but not bad?

Blake Lively got invited to the Met Gala this year. Surprised? Don’t be. Blake is one of Anna Wintour’s favorite young Fashion Girls, and designers clamor to dress Blake for whatever reason. Blake wore this Gucci gown, probably because she’s currently the face of a Gucci fragrance. While the dress isn’t punk AT ALL, I was surprised to discover that I didn’t hate it at all. In the thumbnails, I thought she might have been wearing Marchesa, so I’m glad she wasn’t and I think this Gucci is probably what Marchesa is trying to achieve with many of their ball gown looks. This dress fits Blake beautifully, it’s interesting and the only think I would change would be her slicked-back hair. This would have been a good awards show look, either for the Globes or the Oscars.

And here’s Blake’s casting nemesis, Rooney Mara. Hahaha, Rooney Mara wore Givenchy, just like Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Madonna. Rooney must have been horrified!!! HOW GAUCHE. God, Givenchy had some of the absolute WORST looks on the red carpet, right? And I can’t believe they dressed both co-chairs (Beyonce and Rooney) so terribly. This dress looks like a goth wedding look made from a repurposed doily.

Rooney Mara: ‘I don’t think the human body is something to be ashamed of’

Ugh. I just read the full Interview Magazine interview with Rooney Mara, and that’s 15 minutes of my life I wish I could get back. The interview was conducted by Rooney’s Side Effects director Steven Soderbergh, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say that he kind of hates her. I guess I was supposed to read the thing thinking that they were both being sarcastic and droll, but it genuinely seemed like he found her annoying and she was just playing along. You can read the full thing here, and I’m including some highlights below. All of these photos are from the Interview shoot too – they’re pretty, and Rooney looks old-school beautiful… but there’s a blandness to them too, right? Ugh.

Rooney on nicknames, sororities: “When I was at college, my nickname was Keds, because I wore Keds. I guess it wasn’t really a nickname, because nicknames are usually given to you by people who are your friends and who know you. But I didn’t know the people who called me Keds. I think that they didn’t like me because I didn’t want to join a sorority. I left that school.”

On nudity in films: “I just do what I’m told, when I’m told. There is a line, though—like when you asked me to do reverse cowgirl with Channing [Tatum, who plays Mara’s husband in Side Effects], and I put my foot down. If the character should be nude in the scene and it makes sense and I trust the person making the film—and I regret my decision to trust you now that I know you more—then I don’t see a problem with it. I certainly don’t want to be involved in anything that is gratuitous, but I don’t think the human body is something to be ashamed of. Every other person on the planet has the same parts as I do. So seeing them shouldn’t be a huge shock to most people.”

Why she doesn’t eat “normal food”: “By “normal,” do you mean food that has been genetically modified? I try to eat food that hasn’t been washed in ammonia and then packaged in the shape of breaded dinosaurs filled with cheese—even though those are very tasty. I like to eat food that can actually make it through the 20-plus feet of my small intestine.”

Reading reviews: “Do I care about reviews? Yes and no. I tend to not put too much credence in what other people think, but then, of course, you are curious as to what other people think and you want people to respect you. So, I don’t know. At the end of the day, I am so much more critical of myself than anyone else could be, and I know when something I’ve done is really bad or kind of good. I guess sometimes you read a review to see if anyone else picked up on something bad that you already picked up on yourself. So, generally, if I do read them, I do it when I am feeling really bad about myself, and I find the meanest things that people have said so I can validate my own feelings. I don’t read them to fluff myself up. In fact, rarely do you believe it when someone says something nice.”

On whether or not God gives us a report card: “A report card? I can’t even remember what a report card looks like. Is that strange? I literally can’t picture it. But no, I don’t think we get a report card. I do think, though, that the way we live our lives and treat each other matters. I’m quite often paranoid that I am being watched.”

On her style: “I try not to wear color. Ever. Because it’s easier to get dressed in the morning.”

On the iPhone: “I only just got an iPhone two weeks ago. I hate it. Sorry, Apple. I love Mac products—I love them— but I can’t type on the iPhone, so now I just don’t respond to people. The camera is amazing, though. No denying that.”

[From Interview Magazine]

Her “normal food” comment was made after Soderbergh asked her why she’s sick all the time and whether it was because she doesn’t eat “normal food”. I didn’t realize that Rooney was one of those “can’t eat processed food, ever” people, although that explains a lot about how she carries herself and why she’s so tiny. She seems like she’s a physically weak person, like she can barely strum up the energy to stand up straight. Now we know why – she’s like Goop. She’s probably always on cleanses and she finds meager sustenance by nibbling on one organic carrot a day.

Rooney Mara in Valentino & Balenciaga in Berlin: lovely or slumpy?

Here are some pretty pictures of Jude Law and Rooney Mara in Berlin yesterday for the photocall and Berlin Film Festival premiere of Side Effects. I don’t know why Channing Tatum didn’t go to Berlin, but I’m not complaining about the extra Jude-Time we’re getting. He’s looking incredibly hot these days. As for Rooney and her hit-or-miss styles… for the photocall (the pants/vest thing), she wore Balenciaga and for the premiere she wore a black lace Valentino gown/dress. She wore Louboutins with both outfits. Even though I’m not crazy about the sleeves on the Valentino, I like the overall look. She’s really tiny, isn’t she? She’s SO petite and she has such bad posture. That’s starting to be my tic with Rooney – like the tic I have with Kristen Stewart biting her lip and rolling her eyes. Rooney is always slouching and slumping. It bugs.

In other Rooney news, she was asked about her nude scenes in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo recently, and Rooney admitted that she wore a “merkin” down there, and she requested it in a strawberry-blonde shade. Which makes me want to re-watch that film because I don’t remember her biscuit fur as strawberry blonde…? Anyway, Rooney said: “I had to wear a merkin… They didn’t ask me to but I’m naked so much in it (movie) I wanted one. It felt like a little fur bikini… and I had them make it strawberry blonde.” She also said she kept it when they finished filming and she keeps it at home. Just in case!

Rooney Mara in Alexander McQueen at the ‘Side Effects’ premiere: lovely or fug?

Here are some photos from last night’s NYC premiere of Side Effects, that Steven Soderbergh film which looks surprisingly good. I’m not sure if the film is actually supposed to be a suspense/thriller (as opposed to a straight drama), but that’s the way the commercials make it seem, and I’m up for it. Also surprising: everybody looked pretty good at the premiere. I think Catherine Zeta Jones looked the best – she wore this Michael Kors gown which looks stunning on her. Zeta killed it!

Rooney Mara, the controversial “star” of the film (Soderbergh wanted Blake Lively originally), wore white Alexander McQueen for her big premiere. You know what? I don’t hate it. I think this would have looked awful on most women, but it kind of works on someone with Rooney’s slight build. The middle-part/slicked-down hair is bad – I would love to see her hair with some body, some fluff, something different. But the dress is okay and it’s interesting.

As for the boys – Channing looked nice in his Dolce & Gabbana suit, although I’m not really crazy about his recently-shorn head. He just looks better with hair. This hairstyle makes him look even more meathead-ish. And Jude… well, Jude Law is making love to the cameras. Jude Law is the business. There’s a reason why he keeps getting ladies pregnant.

Rooney Mara versus Kate Mara: who looked cuter at Kate’s premiere?

Does anyone else feel kind of bad for Kate Mara? She’s Rooney Mara’s older sister (older by two years) and it wasn’t that long ago that Kate Mara was the sister posed for a big Hollywood breakout. Kate was the one working consistently in films and television, and she had more name recognition. Then Rooney scored a small part in The Social Network, which led to the role of a lifetime as Lisbeth Salander in the American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which led to magazine covers and fame and money and an Oscar nomination and now people are like “Kate who?”

So these are new photos of the premiere of House of Cards, which is a new TV show starring Kevin Spacey, and Kate has a supporting part. Rooney came out to support her sister, which… is nice, I guess? Kate came to the Oscars last year to support Rooney, and I guess they have a history of showing up for each other’s red carpets and stuff. But it still feels somewhat passive-aggressive on Rooney’s part. Like, “Oh, congrats on your little TV show, I’m about to film a sequel to my Oscar-nominated lead role, haha.” These two just seem more like Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine as opposed to… like, the Olsen sisters.

As for fashion, Rooney is wearing a really terrible Band of Outsiders jumpsuit. Are those Hammer pants? Her outfit looks like something Justin Bieber would wear. Maybe that’s Rooney’s gift to her sister – Rooney will passive-aggressively walk Rooney’s red carpet, but Rooney will make sure that she wears something awful. Kate’s dress is Dolce & Gabbana – it’s sparkly and meh. It would have been a much better look without the white lace hem details.

PS… Is it just me or do both Mara girls have terrible posture? It’s beyond the “hipster slump”.

Rooney Mara complains about red carpets: ‘I’m not a model, and I don’t want to be’

After her Oscar campaign for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was over, I’ve grown to like Rooney Mara a little bit more. It wasn’t even the Oscar campaign per se… because Rooney didn’t really “campaign” and her victory was just getting a nomination last year. No, Rooney rubbed a lot of people the wrong way when she began promoting GWTDT by aloof-ing all over the place and bad-mouthing all of the early TV shows and dumb horror movies that paved her way into the Hollywood world. She just seemed to lack grace and humility, and she seemed pissed off that everything wasn’t handed to her right away as soon as she decided to become an actress – the bitterness of entitlement. The smugness of a rich girl who always had everything handed to her. But, as I said, I like her a little bit more since she sort of disappeared for a while and as it turns out, she really isn’t some famewhore hungry for any kind of attention. Good for her.

Rooney covers the February issue of Vogue because she’s promoting Side Effects, the new Steven Soderbergh thriller also starring Channing Tatum, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones. I’ll admit it – I want to see this movie. I think Rooney looks sort of miscast, but I’ll still give her a chance. As for the Vogue article – you can read the whole thing here – she’s not bad-mouthing her early jobs, but she is definitely still “aloof-ing”. Only the word she uses now is “shy”. She kind of reminds me of 2009 Kristen Stewart – she just seems awkward and unwilling to learn how to promote her work like a professional. I’m not saying she has to give us a song and dance, but I’m sorry… I don’t believe anyone who is so super-duper painfully “shy” would go into acting.

Seeing her own movies: “I’m hypercritical of myself… Anytime I see anything I’ve done, I wish that it had gone differently because you figure it out as you go along, and you’re always discovering new things. I’d probably feel that way about anything that I did.”

She’s not a trained actress: “It’s all intuition for me,” Mara confesses. “I never really studied-studied.” Instead, she works privately with the acting coach Bob Krakower (“I didn’t love being in a class—that’s very hard for me”) and otherwise learns by doing. “I think every job I do, I learn something new and get better,” she says. “I hope, anyway, that I keep evolving. . . . I wouldn’t want just one technique, because I don’t think it would work for every job.”

Studying clinical depression and depressed people for Side Effects: “I think everyone has at some point in their lives been depressed, or at least sad. I had a lot of anxiety growing up because I was so shy, so I could relate to that part of it. But severe clinical depression is a whole other thing, and I guess I never really knew how bad it can get.”

Dressing up is annoying: “For Dragon Tattoo, I had eight different premieres, this many different photo calls. It’s a lot to plan for. It’s not like you can just show up. The thing is, it’s kind of an annoying part of the job—because I’m not a model, and I don’t want to be. I didn’t try to be a style icon. I’m just not that interested in that world. But it does matter, and either I can fight that or I just have to accept that it is a part of my job, and I may as well wear things that I like and that represent me.”

The red carpet: “A nightmare! It’s a panic attack waiting to happen. I don’t even like people to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me. When we wrap a film and everyone claps and cheers, I turn red. And then I have to walk out onto the middle of this carpet and there are all these photographers, and they’re all screaming at you. And usually there’s a party at the other end of it, so it’s not even like I have solace at the end of the carpet! It’s like then I have to walk into my other nightmare!”

She hates being photographed too: “Why should I ‘fake smile’?” she asks. “It feels disingenuous to me. I want to smile when something happy happens, so if I do smile, you know it’s real.”

[From Vogue]

As Adele would say, “Nah, that’s enough now. Cheer up.” Rooney is definitely hyper-self-aware, as I think most actors are. Deeply committed to exploring, defining and talking about themselves. Still, I guess Rooney is improving. Maybe she’ll be on the Kristen Stewart trajectory too – which means in another few years, Rooney will be calling herself a “miserable c—t” and Mini-Coopering married directors. Something to hope for.

Scarlett Johansson’s totally ’90s makeover for W Mag: awesome or awful?

To celebrate W Magazine’s 40th anniversary (“Meh!” says nearly everyone), they decided to do four different covers featuring four different “hot” young actresses representing every decade of W’s 40 years. This Scarlett Johansson cover – representing the 1990s – is getting a lot of attention, mostly because of the wig, I suppose. I hate to admit it, but I do remember when this whole look was in style. RIOT GRRRL! Ani DiFranco! Linda Perry! Etc! You know who I idolized in the 90s? I’ve said it before – Winona Ryder. She was my beauty/body/fashion/career/coolness icon/touchstone.

You can read ScarJo’s short little interview with W Mag here – she doesn’t say anything important. She named Chris Farley as her favorite person from the 1990s, and when asked about her least favorite ‘90s style trend, she says, “Turtlenecks—they’re horrible. I tried to get into them because they are so practical, but they’re just so unfortunate… Men don’t like turtlenecks. I’ve never met a man who likes anything around his neck other than my hands.” George Clooney just came. HA! Oh, one last ScarJo thing – as I said yesterday, Scar is done with Nate Naylor, officially now – it’s been confirmed to Us Weekly & People Mag. On Twitter, some of you are suggesting Scarlett try for Russell Crowe. That would be a delicious mess. I LOVE IT!

I’m including the other cover images below, and you can read all of the short profiles here at W Mag. Keira Knightley is representing the aughts (2000s) – she’s giving me Annie Lennox vibes with the platinum hair.

Mia Wasikowska represents the 1980s – it’s decent. Honestly, I think she looks a lot like January Jones in that photo. Right?!?

And then Rooney Mara represents the 1970s. Um, I didn’t even recognize Rooney. Does anyone else think she’s a dead ringer for Frances McDormand in that wig?

Rooney Mara reveals ombre wig for ‘The Bitter Pill’: busted and completely miscast?

Back in January, Blake Lively was cast in a lead role in Steven Soderbergh’s new film, The Bitter Pill. Blake would have playing a woman in the midst of some kind of nervous breakdown, a wife of newly-released felon, being heavily medicated by her therapist – with Channing Tatum playing the husband and Jude Law playing the therapist. When Blake’s attachment to the film was announced, everyone was like “WTF?”. Including the financial backers for the film, who demanded that Lively’s role be recast. Which it was – Soderbergh ended up recasting the role with Rooney Mara. These are some photos of Rooney and Jude Law on the NYC set yesterday.

As you can see, Rooney is wearing either a really busted wig or really a really tacky-looking weave for her role. Us Weekly says it’s totally a wig, and they describe it as “ombre”. I just call it ugly, though. Like, I understand the fascination with wigs and stuff, and I understand that Rooney couldn’t and shouldn’t have her “Dragon Tattoo” hair for another film. But if you’re going to go through the process of getting a realistic-looking wig, does it have to look like you’re making poor Rooney wear a skinned cat on her head? It looks cheap. It makes Rooney look cheap.

This makes me think that Sodergergh is actively trying to make a film about characters living within very modest means. Which makes me wonder… why was Rooney Mara cast? She’s got that Gwyneth Paltrow-esque snotty, bored voice. She sounds like what she is – a rich girl. Not that Blake Lively would have been better – I’m not saying that! If the female character is supposed to be poor and busted, try to cast someone who isn’t justly typecast as a “bored rich girl”. There should be other options besides Blake Lively and Rooney Mara, for goodness sake.

Maybe that’s why Jude Law looks so sad.
