Celebitchy’s most commented and our favorite stories of 2023

I can’t believe another year has gone by! Last year our most commented story was about the slap heard round the world when Will Smith stood up to Chris Rock at the Oscars for disrespecting his wife. We added our favorite stories to that list, including Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez getting married, Leonardo DiCaprio dumping his girlfriend for turning 25 and then-Duchess Camilla gleefully spreading covid maskless at a cooking event. This year we had King Charles’s coronation and both Spare and Endgame came out! Here are our most commented stories this year along with some of our favorites. (From CB: I’ve written this post and there are sections that Kaiser wrote which are labeled!)

20 Meghan sent letters to Charles following the Oprah interview

The Telegraph revealed this April that Meghan and then Prince Charles exchanged letters following the Oprah interview in early 2021. They discussed Meghan’s disclosure to Oprah that there were “concerns and conversations about how dark [Archie’s] skin might be when he’s born.” The letters were said to be cordial but there was no resolution reached. We later learned, through the mistaken publication of the Dutch translation of an unapproved draft of Omid Scobie’s Endgame, that both Princess Kate and King Charles were the royals who speculated about the baby’s skin color. (Get the Top 10 stories from Omid Scobie’s Endgame when you sign up for our mailing list!)

15 The racist Oscar voter

A rare non-royal story among our most commented was this Entertainment Weekly piece featuring quotes from four anonymous Oscar voters. One was so contemptibly racist that we made it a blind item. He refused to watch The Woman King, called “wokeness” “out of control” and said “Viola Davis and the lady director need to sit down, shut up, and relax.” While there was no consensus on this horrible man’s identity, those awful comments could have come from any number of old white men in Hollywood.

16, 10, 6 The Sussexes were evicted from Frogmore Cottage, then targeted in a paparazzi car chase

It was just this year, following the massive success of Prince Harry’s Spare, that the Sussexes were evicted from Frogmore cottage. This laid bare their very serious security concerns, particularly because Harry is still fighting to pay for armed protection in the UK. Meghan signed with WME in April and then in May the Sussexes were targeted by paparazzi in a car chase during a trip to NY. There were so many think pieces about how they should have made more business moves this year and very little analysis of the systematic way they’ve been targeted, threatened and harassed. (Get the Top 8 stories about the Sussexes’ paparazzi car chase when you sign up for our mailing list.)

17, 13, 12 Kate tried to get attention as her marriage crumbled

Princess Kate’s fashion and the sad state of her marriage were among our most commented stories. She wore a cosplaying red outfit to the South Korean state visit, which she comically hiked up when exiting her car. At the BAFTAs she paired a white dress with black opera gloves and then she donned a white pantsuit to a Rugby World Cup match in March. We wouldn’t have paid much attention to her predictable copykeening, except for the fact that it was a near exact copy of the outfit Meghan wore to the previous years Invictus Games – as the Invictus Games were happening. We also heard that Will and Kate have “terrible rows where they throw things at each other.” The stories about Will and Kate throwing cushions at each other and needing time apart make it sound like their marriage is all but over. (Get the Top 8 stories about Will and Kate’s crumbling marriage when you sign up for our mailing list!)

7, 5, 3, 2 The Coronation of King Charles

It’s hard to believe that the coronation of King Charles was just this May. The palace announcement that only Harry would go and that Meghan and their children would stay home was our second most commented story this year. The post about Charles claiming the Sussexes would be banned from the balcony, the Coronation open post and the story about Kate’s outfit were also amount the top 10. Overall it was a glum, bizarre and expensive affair highlighting the uselessness of the monarchy. (Get the Top 10 Stories about the Coronation when you sign up for our mailing list!)

From Kaiser: The coronation substories were hilarious because there was so much dumb drama ahead of the coronation, then the event itself was so boring. I loved our open post on the day, I loved all of the drama about Prince Harry’s Dior suit, I loved how aristocrats were totally pissed that they didn’t get invited, and I loved that as soon as the whole thing was done, Prince William basically told everyone that he’s already planning his coronation and he won’t do anything like Charles. The Pamela Hicks snub was really extraordinary too, and that didn’t get enough attention.

19, 18, 14, 11, 9, 4, 1 Spare

Prince Harry’s Spare was an international bestseller and contained so many revelations that made it to our top 20. The number one story was about Prince William’s violent assault of Harry in Harry’s kitchen. William’s response at the news getting out was textbook DARVO. Other top stories from Spare include Prince Harry’s first lover selling her story to the tabloids, Kate throwing a fit about Charlotte’s bridesmaid’s dress, Kate grimacing when Meghan borrowed her lip gloss – after Meghan asked, and Prince Harry revealing Meghan’s pregnancy at Eugenie’s wedding. My favorite story was when Kate misinterpreted Meghan’s empathetic comment about “baby brain” as a slight. Another top story this year was Queen Camilla’s 48-year-old son, Tom Parker-Bowles, who very much takes after her looks-wise, being floated as a replacement for Harry. Thankfully we haven’t heard much about him since.

From Kaiser: We had so many huge stories about Prince Harry’s Spare in the first months of the year, and Spare became one of the biggest bestsellers of the year. There’s so much conversation about what was said and Harry “selling out his family,” and all of that dumb sh-t, but I just have to keep repeating this: Spare is not only a historical document, it’s also a narrative about childhood neglect and how that shaped Harry.

Our Favorites: Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s affair

From Kaiser: Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s affair was one of the most old-school messy gossip stories of the year. That man had a wife and a baby at home! And his wife started briefing the press herself. (Get the Top 8 stories about Ariana’s Grande’s messy affair when you sign up for our mailing list!)

Our Favorites: Taylor Swift’s love life

Taylor Swift had a great year with the bestselling tour of all time, a box office hit and two new romances. In May we heard that she was dating The 1975’s vocalist, Matt Healy. They moved quickly with a typical boyfriend rollout for Taylor however his awful history of racism and sexism soon caught up with him and he remained unapologetic. They split soon afterwards. We heard in September that Taylor was seeing Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and their whirlwind romance has been so much fun to witness. (Get the Top 8 stories about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s new relationship when you sign up for our mailing list!)

Our Favorites: thunder-stealing

From Kaiser: I laughed my ass off at all of the Chelsea Flower Show thunder-stealing. Princess Kate hosted a surprise picnic at the flower show on Media Day, overshadowing Charles and Camilla, and there were headlines for weeks! (Get the top 8 stories about the Waleses stealing King Charles’s thunder when you sign up for our mailing list!)

The Middletons’ house of cards

From Kaiser: The collapse of the Middletons’ house of cards was Peak Schadenfreude, especially since long-time royal watchers always knew that the Middletons’ finances were shady as hell. Party Pieces’s descent into bankruptcy was incredible to watch, especially as someone finally admitted that the Middletons have lied about their wealth for years. (Get the Top 10 stories about the Middletons’ shady finances when you sign up for our mailing list!)

And finally The Telegraph called us Sussex Squad influencers when they saw Kaiser’s tweet about getting an advance copy of Endgame.

Thank you for reading, listening and commenting! We hope you have a great 2024!

That last picture of Omid Scobie is just… chef’s kiss.

    • Smart&Messy says:

It is! And I love that it’s the last, like scroll down funny.

    • BlueNailsBetty says:

Reading this post I realized Spare kicked off the year and Endgame ended it. Love that the royal family got slammed all. year. long. due to the books bookending their entire year.

  2. seaflower says:

The Middleton mess may just be my favourite……

    • Kittenmom says:

      Mine too!

      • TN Democrat says:

Happy New Years! This has been the first thing I have read every morning for years. I love this site and look forward to the year to come (and hope kHate and egg head are the divorcing couple for the hilarious content). Happy Day!

      • Megan says:

Hoping someone gets divorced for your entertainment suggests you need some New Year’s resolutions.

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

Megan, not everyone will rise above when the bm has used every trick in the book to make it look like the Sussexes’ marriage is the one on the brink of ending just so that they can hide the fact that it is actually WanK whose marriage is in the pits. I might go so far as to say that it would be better for the children if those two would just formally separate and someday divorce. I don’t care what the adults do, but I do care how it affects the kids.

      • TN Democrat says:

Kate and William are awful people with no work ethic who use their own children and extended family members as shields to cover their own bad behavior. Harry and his family has endured horrific treatment, most of which originated from his cowardly brother and his brother’s lazy wife happily throwing to them to the wolves. Neither peg nor wiglet deserve to be held up on a pedestal and their children would be better off long term if their pillow throwing domestic toxicity wasn’t part of their home life.

    • Eurydice says:

I’ll vote for this, too. So satisfying and with the added juciness of “why didn’t William bail them out?”

      • Becks1 says:

I think for royal watching, this year will be a very interesting year to look back on and track some bigger stories from here.

      • Eurydice says:

@Becks1 – absolutely! These are multi-season story arcs.

      • Unblinkered says:

And/or why didn’t the other (alleged) millionaire James Matthew’s Pippa’s husband bail the Middletons out? Perhaps bc they’d both bailed Carol out on past occasions?

    • Harper says:

The posters calling out CarolE the grifter tacked onto the village trees and lightposts of Bucklebury is my favorite gossip story of 2023.

    • Laura D says:

The downfall of the Middleton “Empire” was glorious to behold. Reminding everyone that it was Meghan (and not Kate) who was the real self-made millionaire marrying into the BRF.

This was a great recap! Kaiser somehow I missed the post about you being quoted in the Telegraph. WHAT A DELIGHT! I laughed out loud. I’ve been reading this blog since…. 2007? 2008? It has been the first thing I read every morning for decades. I love the way y’all cover celebrity news, and I love the thoughtful and smart commenters too.

I am reflecting on the books I read this year (just finished my 86th!) and I still think Spare is my favorite. It lives in my head, and it was the first book I finished this year! I hurried up to read it after y’all started posting all the excerpts that were leaked.

The Travis/Taylor posts have brought me so much joy too. There’s been some good celebrity gossip this year!

  5. Thelma says:

Great round up. The Middleton house of cards collapse, the Taylor-Travis romance and the conversation around Spare were all favorites. Love Celebitchy! Thanks to all the writers. Wishing all CBers a happy New Year.

  6. Mrs. Smith says:

Memories! The Middletons house of cards was my favorite b/c it was an actual tangible failure. A real FAFO story — so satisfying! I love the royal gossip, but the smugness of the BRF is killing me. Fingers crossed in 2024 someone will finally crack and we’ll get to see some comeuppance for the Windsor’s that is sorely overdue.

  7. atlantababe says:

those pictures of kate getting out of the car are a lot…she legit looks she is wearing a too small towel at the beach. seeing how long the dress/cape was when she was standing normal just shows she hiked it up intentionally.

  8. JaneS says:

I’m rooting for Prince William to go rogue in 2024.
William, drunk as a skunk, calls a press conference.
Shows up bare chested, ermine robe draped across his shoulders, sweatpants.
Declares “Everyone is mad as a hatter. I’m off to go fishing in Scotland.”

I might have seen this on The Windors 😂

  9. swaz says:

This has been my first year as Celebitchy member 😍😍😍 LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT 🎈🎈🎈HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL 🥂🥂🥂

    • Sussex Fan says:

Same here! I’m more content to read; y’all say everything I’m thinking. Happy New Year!

  10. Lala11_7 says:

    👏👏 Bravo 👏👏 EVERYONE AT CELEBITCHY❣️❣️❣️❣️

  11. Angie says:

Legendary when you were quoted in a BritTab!

  12. Kkat says:

The Middleton fall has been my favorite
All the Taylor/Matt/Travis stuff I enjoyed
    The Messy Ari stuff
The start of the downfall of Khate has been juicy, hope there are more tatler articles in her future.
The karma coming home to the left behind royals has been delightful

The Dan Wooten takedown was good to watch, let’s see the end of Morgan next

I read every article every day, thank you for being my favorite place!

  13. Glamarazzi says:

An epic year of gossip! I was so happy for Harry’s success with Spare. I know we’ll never find out what was in those Meghan/Charles letters but I’m dying of curiosity about them. Thanks for keeping us entertained this year, this site makes me smile every morning.

  14. booboocita says:

I loved all the posts about Byline Times and Dan Wootton. Seeing the BM exposed for the jackals they are was an amazing and thoroughly satisfying experience. Many thanks to Kaiser and Celebitchy writers for excellent reporting and commentary, and to all the Celebitches for fantastic snark in 2023!

  15. Feebee says:

Thanks for another incredible year CB and Kaiser. I’ve loved the stories and sometimes the comments have been educational as well as hilarious. Never a dull moment around here anyway.

Wishing you and everyone a fantastic 2024!

  16. Saucy&Sassy says:

Happy New Year to all here, and a big thank you to the writers for CB. What would we do without your summaries and well placed snark? I’ve enjoyed being here the last 4 years or so and I’m not only entertained at times but I’ve learned so much. I keep thinking 2024 will be the beginning of something in the brf. Can’t wait to see what it is.

Mary Pester, I hope you have a great 2024 filled with your family and friends! And, of course, all of us here!

  17. Libra says:

Saving my excitement until the release of the Epstein papers. Will be either a doozy or a dud.

  18. Pajala says:

My favorite of the year may be the late-breaking: TJ and Amy’s spouses are now romantically involved. Most hilarious is that the spouses may go the distance whereas Amy and TJ will spectacularly crash and burn in 2024.

    • Roo says:

Pajala, yes! That was peak hilarity and schadenfreude.

Love this site, and my mornings start with the smart and hilarious posts and comments. Thank you and happy 2024 to everyone!

  19. ,Libra says:

I don’t for one minute wish divorce on Kate and William. They should continue living as they are now and be miserable with each other as long as they both shall live.

  20. Abisola says:

How did I miss your outing by the Telegraph as a Sussex squad Influencer 🤗🤗🤗🤗. That was the most hilarious part of the posts.
Kaiser , just think, you are famous now in Royal circles. Imagine the rota and the men in grey frantically looking you and all celebitchy posts up and all you have written lol. Even Kate I am sure.

It’s a new year soon, Thanks for you all for your hard work keeping this page alive. Thanks for keeping the spirit of this page alive.

I stumbled on Celebitchy many years back, say 2007 or earlier via RSS feeds. I remember the phone, it was my brother’s. I loved the site instantly and I have never looked back.
Thanks to the commenters. You are the best part.

  21. J.Ferber says:

Omid Scobie is as hot as hell! He looks about 25 years old in that last pic! Wow!

  22. Grey says:

Thank you for including some non royal stories! I don’t dislike reading about the royals sometimes but I miss the Celebitchy I started reading 10 years ago with fun celebrity gossip stories… truly my escapism!

  23. Teel says:

I got sick for the first time in 4 years over Christmas, so binge-watched the last 2 seasons of The Crown and finished watching Netflix’s Harry and Meghan this morning. I have nothing but a massive amount of respect and admiration for Harry and Meghan; absolutely appalling what the tabloids, in cahoots with the RF put them through. So happy they are safe(r) and happy after their escape.

  24. Aries48 says:

Just noticed in the “4 Undertakers” picture at the end we see pda between Charles and Camila and slight of hand pda between W&K.

Anyway, congrats to Celebitchy for a terrific year or reporting!

  25. Gubbinal says:

I read a major newspaper every morning (The NYT which I don’t trust totally) and fall into grim despond for the two seconds it takes to bring up Celebitchy which provides me with mirth and staunchness to face the day. Coverage of the Royals brought me here and I also find myself enchanted by little stories about Jennifer Garner’s cookies, or Dr. Jill Biden’s tap dancers.
Your sensibility; your writing style; your campy, edgy irony, your grasp of history: I admire and enjoy it all. Your space has given me much mirth and food for thought.

Thank you to all of the team here.

  26. Lisa R says:

My favorite item of the year was the President of the United States Joe Biden taking time out of his busy schedule to complement Prince Harry on air, yet not having time for William, and just shaking William’s hand outside in the cold.
