Celebitchy’s most commented and our favorite stories of 2020

Every year, I do a “most commented” post. (Years ago I would do a “most popular” post too but I gave that up because it was too much work.) Instead of just doing the most commented stories of the year, I’m doing the most commented plus a few of our favorites. That’s because the top 20 most commented stories started off being all about the royals! We had Sussexit, The Tatler Scandal and Finding Freedom so that’s not surprising. However we have a late-breaking entry by Hilaria Baldwin! Last year the most commented stories were a more mixed group between the royals, including Prince William’s affair and Archie’s birth, and the college admissions scandal. Our favorite stories this year include Afflarmas, Katie Holmes and Emilio Vitolo, the outing of Lea Michele and Trump catching covid. (I’m cut and pasting some of the text for our favorite stories from our last podcast post, so some of that may sound familiar. It’s the end of the year and I’m feeling lazy!)

Meghan reads to Archie on his first birthday

This story falls farther down the list than we usually feature but I wanted to talk about it because it’s one of my favorite moments of the year. Meghan read the book Duck Rabbit to Archie on his first birthday and posted the video with a call for donations to Save The Children. It was adorable and sweet and Meghan ended up helping a worthy charity. She was widely praised for sharing the cute video and supporting a good cause. She got criticized and nitpicked for it too of course, because that always happens to her.

The Tatler Debacle

For a deep dive into the Tatler Scandal, you can get the top 8 stories here. I did a mailing list signup with those because that story was just insane. In May, Tatler ran a cover story with the title Catherine The Great, how the crisis made Kate the Kingmaker. It was superficially positive toward her, but a full read showed that it was shady and used sugary palace-sanctioned quotes against The Cambridges. William and Kate denied knowing about the piece and threatened legal action against Tatler. Tatler stated that the palace was aware of the piece, that they asked them to work with them on it, and that they stood by their journalist. In a related story that’s in our top 20, Tom Sykes at The Daily Beast revealed that he heard about Prince William’s affair with Rose Hanbury from one of his “top sources, the daughter of an earl.”

Hilaria Baldwin outed as lying about her Spanish background

I made this list last week thinking that would be it for the year, but then we got the amazing Hilaria Baldwin story. A Twitter user compiled evidence showing that Alec Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, had fabricated her backstory, claiming to grow up in Spain and faking an accent when she was from Boston and has American parents and grandparents. Hilaria offered vague non-explanations on Instagram and to the NY Times while outlets dug up more evidence of her long and obvious grift.

The “you could’ve had a bad bitch” victory lap

Duke of Sussex and Duchess of Sussex arriving at Mansion house
In March, after leaving the Royal Family, Harry and Meghan returned to the UK and made several appearances where they looked triumphant and happy. Meghan’s gorgeous, bright-colored fashion seemed to telegraph her mood, with the most iconic photos coming out of their appearance at the Endeavor Awards. Meghan and Harry also looked triumphant in red at a Royal Marines charity event. The Commonwealth Day services showed the strain between Harry, Meghan and the royals, with William and Kate barely acknowledging them. Another most-commented story post-Sussexit was Harry’s speech at a JP Morgan event in Miami in February.

Princess Beatrice & Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi got married

We got a British royal wedding this year when Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi married in a socially distanced ceremony attended only by close family, as per lockdown rules in the UK. Curiously we got no photos of the bride’s parents. Her father is of course under investigation for his role in the Jeffrey Epstein child trafficking case.

Jessica Mulroney fired from CTV after making racist threats

Duchess Meghan’s Canadian BFF, TV presenter and stylist Jessica Mulroney, made racist threats to lifestyle blogger Sasha Exeter after Sasha made a post calling out people for not supporting Black Lives Matter. Jessica wasn’t named in the post she took offense to, but she took it personally and threatened Sasha’s livelihood. TV station CTV then fired Jessica from her job as host of the show I Do, Redo.

Finding Freedom

Only one story from Finding Freedom made it into the top twenty most commented this year, the story about Meghan announcing her pregnancy news at Eugenie’s wedding. That was likely because we had multiple stories a day from that dishy book and the comments got divided. Omid Scobie really delivered and Finding Freedom was a joy to read. If you’d like to do a deeper dive into our Finding Freedom coverage, you can get an email with the top 12 stories and denials about Finding Freedom.

20 (a tie), 18, 16, 9-1

Harry and Meghan’s announcement that they were stepping back from royal life was our top most commented post of 2020. We had so many other stories about Sussexit in our top 20, including The Queen’s statement about it, the fact that Harry and Meghan did work closely with the palace despite the royals’ claims and the news that Harry and Meghan had given up their HRH status. They detailed their exit plan with a well thought out website and left Archie in Canada briefly when they flew to London to make the announcement. We heard that William and Kate were “reeling” from the news despite the fact that they knew the Sussexes’ plans well ahead of time. There was also the question of who would pay for The Sussexes’ security. Plus the whole “one year review” issue came up, with the initial plan being that the arrangement would only last a year. We pretty much know how that’s going to work out.

Our favorites: Afflarmas came out as a couple
Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas hooked up early in quarantine and are thought to still be going strong despite the concerning lack of updates. They traveled together early in the pandemic and failed to quarantine or wear masks. They made out for a music video and were spotted often this summer walking their dogs, kissing and gazing lovingly at each other. Their publicity peaked when Ana had a cardboard cutout of herself made and put on Ben’s lawn. Curiously, after the Washington Post ran a fun editorial about Ben and Ana calling them the “pandemic’s only tabloid celebrities,” the pap photos dried up. We did hear that they moved in together though. Will we get an engagement or a breakup announcement in 2021?

Our favorites: Trump got covid
In October, Trump got covid after playing it down, holding indoor superspreader rallies, going maskless and not social distancing. He threw a parade for himself outside Walter Reed, he ambled up the steps of the White House and ripped his mask off before going inside and he told people the virus was a blessing in disguise and that they should “dominate” it. I look forward to hopefully ignoring this harmful racist fascist a-hole in 2021.

Our favorites: Lea Michele got outed as a mean girl a-hole
2019 New York Stage and Film Winter Gala - Arrivals.
One of Lea Michele’s Glee costars, Samantha Marie Ware, spoke out against her after Lea supported BLM. Samantha revealed that Lea bullied her on set and threatened to poop in her wig. Other people also spoke out about how awful Lea is including costars Heather Morris, Craig Ramsay, and Amber Riley and even Lea’s L’oreal collaborators.

Our favorites: Katie Holmes and Emilio Vitolo took over for Afflarmas
Katie Holmes and her new boyfriend, chef Emilio Vitolo, stepped in this September to fill the void left by Afflarmas. While not as many people were interested in these two, the stories were fun and included plenty of photos of their PDA and bad fashion. Plus they always wore masks while they were out, which we appreciated.

Hope you have a wonderful 2021. Please continue to social distance and wear a mask. Thank you for reading, commenting and supporting us! I hope you and your loved ones stay safe and warm.

Thanks for this awesome list. What a year! Happy New Year to all the CB writers and commenters!

    • StormsMama says:

      Great list.
Thanks to Celebitchy both the writers and commenters.
It’s been at least 15 years for me here- and I’m so grateful to have you.
      Love you all

      • Celebitchy says:

You are so sweet thank you! We will reach 15 years in February! I started this site when my son was about 1 and a half and he will graduate 2022. -loud cry emoji-

      • phaedra says:

Ditto Stormsmama. Thanks, CB and co for creating a great internet community to go when the news was just too awful to read. I can’t tell you what that meant to my mental health: reading your witty, funny articles about celebrities and pop culture while also getting reality in small, easier to digest doses (that I could skip if I needed or read if I could take it that day.)

I apologize for being a downer, but 2020 was pretty bad.. When all the major stories are about assholes or nice people being treated badly by assholes… I was really really sad the RF drove the Sussexes away; I’d hoped for YEARS of fun, fairy tale princess stories and pics from England. BLM was a point of hope, but where is it now? I’m hoping 2021 starts with a post of Trump being dragged kicking and screaming from the WH in a straight jacket. :). THANK ALL CELEBITCHY WRITERS & POSTERS for being a light during this year.

  3. Lightpurple says:

Happy New Year, Celebitches! May 2021 bring us calm, normalcy, good health, happiness, and plenty of fun gossip.

  4. Belli says:

Happy new year to you all, it’s been a hell of a one!

I know I’m not alone in this site being one of the only places I come to for royal coverage and it’s been a busy royal year, so it’s not surprising to see the list! Fingers crossed things calm down, even if that makes for less interesting gossip…

  5. BayTampaBay says:

CB & Kaiser – I must disagree with you. THE BEST STORY of the Year was the Turnip Toff – Kate Tween – Ma Middleton story. I mean we are talking bitch-slaps from every direction.

  6. (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Wishing everyone in CBville, a healthy, SAFE, and happy New Year!! So many thanks to all the writers and commenters here who make this the best place to start every day!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🍾🥂🎉🥳 (all with your household bubbles, of course! 😊)

  7. Lovesitinnm says:

Happy New Year! Thank you for the consistently great coverage and stories. I like the favorite things posts too.

  8. Lola Coasters says:

This website, podcast and comments are a big part of my day and I wanted to thank all of you for being so awesomesauce! I wish there was a like button for comments or posts because sometimes I really love what was said, but just don’t have anything to contribute! Here is to 2021!!

  9. LarkspurLMM says:

Celebitchy – thank you for your insightful gossip, shopping and political posts to get us through 2020! First site I check 🙂

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2021! Wear that mask!

  10. Sofia says:

Happy New Year! My favourite story was Tatlergate. Spring 2019 gave us Rosegate, spring 2020 gave us Tatlergate so let’s see if Spring 2021 gives us anything 😉

  11. SnowQueenM says:

I do want to thank Celebitchy being a bright spot for Meghan and Harry coverage! I’ve stopped reading (usually ridiculous and racist) mainstream news stories about M&H and just come here to see what’s up with them.

    Happy New Year’s!

  12. Original Jenns says:

I am bummed Tatler edited their online article for Catherine the Great. It’s all the praise of Catherine and none of the zingers from the Toffs about new money. Ah well, I guess the compromise was to keep the burns in print alone.

  13. LeonsMomma says:

Another great year! I discovered Celebitchy in 2019 while I was in a job I hated—my lunch break included reading Celebitchy, which kept my sanity with well-written, insightful articles and my fellow commenters, who make the discussions even livelier. And a shout out to the moderators who keep the trolls out.

  14. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

GOODBYE 2020… It was a history making year. And so many huge things happening within it. On a personal level, my 15yo lost his very best friend overnight. One minute they’re talking. Then they’re not. His friend’s family, however, has quietly and respectfully taken him into their embrace, (I believe they find peace when they’re around each other).

My oldest got married early summer, then announced a couple months later I was going to be a grandmother. Another boy. We should really start a generational boy/man band.

My husband, alcoholic extraordinaire, has been sober almost two years now (which means our household hasn’t had an argument in almost two years lol). Since Covid took over everyone’s lives, his industry saw zero negative impact, and we’ve been very fortunate to not only stay home and safe, but we’ve been able to help friends and neighbors by sending grocery and necessity deliveries. I still suffer migraines and horrible headaches almost daily, but if politics is left at the front door, our life here has grown more intimate, caring, loving and kind. And fatter. My R2D2 (Ninja Foodi) is always on.

I want to personally thank CB and my Massachusettes best friend for being there every day to unload about Lord Rusty Farquaad and roll back my anger with half our cuntry and ‘Murica’s future.

Happy New Year Bitches! Each and every one of yuz rocks and rolls!

I also want to add my favorite thing about 2020. BLM. Although the impetus for protests remains horrifying, observing the largest and most diversified gatherings was inspirational.

    • Christina says:

Mabs, your comments are a rare treat. You are real, direct, clearly loving and so thoughtful. Thank you for being you and sharing what you think. This post helps me know more about someone I admire. Wishing you joy.

  15. Myra says:

2020 was a horrible year for almost everyone and incredibly devastating for many families and I had been looking forward to say goodbye to it since March.

There were lots of beautiful moments in between nonetheless. Some great stories of compassion and kindness. I decided to stop being a lurker this year after a decade of lurking 🙂 Thanks to Celebitchy, (the good side of) Twitter and Hillaria, this year was made bearable and provided a nice escapism.

Happy new year to everyone and hope the next year brings you peace, love and prosperity (or whatever it is you personally wish for)!!

    • Marie says:

Thank you, Celebitchies. Long time reader, first time commenter. You’ve helped to make 2020 bearable. I appreciate you all.

  16. IMUCU says:

Happy New Year everyone! Enjoy it safely (I’ll be hiding under my covers as I’m in a Lupus flare-up, 2020 wasn’t totally done with me unfortunately, lol :-/) and let’s hope this next year brings more positives than negatives (-: !

  17. Amelie says:

Omg Sussexit in January 2020, when we thought that would be the biggest gossip drama of the year! I guess it was in a way but it was pre-COVID, pre-BLM and we were just so naive. But to me the biggest stories were without a doubt COVID and the election and we had lots of gossip stories attached to both with so many celebs getting COVID (and still getting it and now we have this more infectious variant going around). And omg Hilaria Baldwin, thank you for your last minute controversy I’m still LOLing about it. And thank you to Celebitchy for providing so much entertainment in a really difficult year for a lot of us. It is so appreciated!

One last thing: I think we can agree Afflarmas never really caught on? 😂 It was always going to be BenAna (but you did try Kaiser!!).

  18. Eleonora says:

    Thank you for eberything.

    Happy 2021 🙂

  19. L4frimaire says:

I’m glad this year is over. 2020 really was the worst. I wish that we could say the world will be a better place in 2021 but people are still trying the most to be the worst. Will do my best, anyway. Happy 2021!

  20. anniefannie says:

Celebitchy really has been my 2020 safe space. Through all the ups and terrifying downs I knew 1st thing in the morning I could I grab a cup of coffee and our celebitchy crew/community would, thru laughter, tears, muscle and engagement figure out how we’d tackle the days events.
I’m wishing all of you a happy, safe, love filled and Covid free 2021.
AND to the writers; your efforts, research, thoughtful writing has made a difference in making this year bearable 💋💋💋

  21. VIV says:

It’s too bad the popular posts are a pain! I love to see where the lurkers are at, (I think it took like 10 years before my first comment lol), but fully understandable to not want to deal with it. Thanks to all for another year of entertainment and informative discussions!

  22. Sandy says:

Happy New Year! Thank you all for being a bright spot in 2020!

  23. Christina says:

    Happy New Year, Celebitches!!!

You all are helping me heal from some tough stuff. Your comments being me joy and you make me think. You are strangers who I feel a kinship with, and I look forward to reading your thoughts and knowing your opinions.

    Thank you all. ♥️

  24. lola says:

This site and community were really a great escape from the hellhole 2020. Thank you for writing such entertaining posts, and I had so much fun to read the comments and to comment myself.

I wish you all a great, peaceful and healthy 2021!!!!

  25. CJS says:

I’ve been reading Celebitchy for maybe 12 years, and it’s still a bright spot in my day! I enjoy the podcasts, Twitter banter, favorite things posts, and your coverage of the political shenanigans of the past several years. Thank you for calling out racism and injustice wherever you see it. And for sharing your own struggles and triumphs! I appreciate the candor and am inspired by it. I’m with you. Here’s to hoping 2021 is a better year for all of us bitches.

  26. Nev says:

Lets do this like we did the election!!!!

    Happy New Years Bitches.

  27. BC says:

Waking up to the news that Chadwick Boseman was no more was my biggest celebrity news of the year. It felt like my heart had been ripped out. I wasn’t ready. Watching the sussexes make gain after financial gain was the best part of pop news after they were thrown to the wolves and declared financially inept at surviving. Diana getting her revenge … Somewhat… Through The Crown was sweet too. Biden and Kamala winning was a feel-good week. The entanglement giving us a new word to replace situationships was a fun , revealing moment.

  28. Victory says:

My favourite story was the Cambridge choovid express. It held faux promise for those unaware of the UK travel ban. A political trainwreck (bad pun) ensued so then cabbage aka BRF lady boss, per her advisors wore a beguiling, crimson red xmas outfit hoping to distract yet again.
It was a tiresome, very worrisome year mixed with pandemic grief and hope for the future.
Thank you to all medical personnel around the world.
I pray 2021 brings peace, good health and comfort.

  29. Reece says:

    Happy New Year All!!!!

The picture of H&M in the rain with all of the light behind them never stops being stunning!
Really that’s all I care to think about going into 2021. The rest of them can suck it.

  30. LeaTheFrench says:

    Happy New Year, everyone!
I look forward to great stories from Celebitchy in 2021, you guys never disappoint!!
Can I add a personal favorite to that wonderful list? Brad Pitt, Nicole Poturalski, her sad bedroom photos and the whole PR disaster around it 😂 That was simply hilarious 🤣

  31. Becks1 says:

I want credit for pointing out last January that the Sussexit posts would top this list! Lol

Thanks for all your posts and moderating, this site is so much fun to visit and i feel like we have a great community here!

  32. dawnchild says:

Such a good site…so many smart commenters and good energy! Thank you and a happy new year to all.

Remembering people who were lost to Covid and otherwise (John Lewis, RBG), and BLM protests, and an amazing election turnout, and all the good generated through this messy year.

Grateful for the war that didn’t happen in February. I truly feel that Covid sat us all down in a planet-wide time-out; just as Iran, Russia, and Trump ramped us all up for hell.
Stay well, safe, brave, and kind (to others and ourselves)!
